Opis:
The current spill response capability in Finland is built to respond to oil spills caused by heavy fuel oils and the most transported oil cargoes. However, the implementation of the Sulphur Directive in 2015 changed the fuel profiles of the ships: prior to the new regulation ships operating in the Baltic Sea mainly used heavy fuel oil (HFO), whereas now ships use marine gas oil (MGO DMA) or marine diesel (MDO DMB) known as marine distillate fuels. This paper reviews the effectiveness of the current recovery techniques in responding to spills of marine distillate fuels based on the oil recovery field tests. The results indicate that conventional recovery techniques are only partially applicable to marine distillate fuels, which calls for a reassessment of the marine oil spill response capability and further research. The use and availability of low-carbon marine fuels will continue to increase as emission regulations become more stringent. This will require a continuous assessment of the oil recovery capabilities and the adaptation of spill response preparedness accordingly.

Opis:
Modern cooling systems for large ships are quite complex. As a rule, such systems are common (combined) for the main and auxiliaries engines. With the auxiliary engines running constantly, even when parked, this system design allows to keep it warm and ready for a quick start of the main engines at any time. Currently, various schemes of such systems are used, including those that are irrational from our point of view. At the same time, there are systems whose schemes are quite consistent with our idea of the rational forms of such structures. It is important to note, and it is saying about it in an article, that such schemes may have a number of significant differences, but at the same time they will comply with the rationality principle if certain rules for the formation of such systems are followed. These schemes will have close compactness. It is also important that there is the possibility of further improvement of such schemes based on certain rules. This improvement is possible due to the introduction of additional heat dissipaters and the organization of appropriate chains of heat sources and heat dissipaters. The article discusses various options for rational schemes of the cooling system for the same ship power plant, as well as the possibility of further improvement of this scheme. It is shown that an increase in the number of coolants of the internal circuit coolant from one to three can reduce the total mass of the heat exchanger cores by 18 %.

Opis:
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) is considered as a realistic substation of marine fuel in 21 century. Solution of building new engines or converting diesels into gas fueled propulsion meets the stringent international emission regulations. For HFO (heavy fuel oil) or MDO (marine diesel oil) propelled vessels, operation of bunkering is relatively wide known and simple. Its due to the fact that fuel itself doesn’t require high standards of handling. Where for LNG as a fuel its very demanding process – it evaporates and requires either consuming by bunker vessel or reliquefication. Distribution of such bunker is becoming multidimensional problem with time and space constrains. The objective of the article is to review the methods of optimization using genetic algorithms for a model of LNG distribution. In particular, there will be considered methods of solving problems with many boundry criteria whose objective functions are contradictory. Methods used for solving the majority of problems are can prevent the simultaneous optimization of the examined objectives, e.g. the minimisation of costs or distance covered, or the maximisation of profits or efficiency etc. Here the standard genetic algorithms are suitable for solving multi-criteria problems by using functions producing a diversity of results depending on the adopted approach.

The vegetable oil is well known as green fuel for diesel engines due to its low sunphur content and renewable stock. However, there are some problems raising when vegetable oil is used as fuel for diesel engines such as highly effected by cold weather, lower general efficiency, separation in layer if mixed with diesel oil and so on. To overcome that disadvantiges, the authors propose a new idea that to use a continuous fuel mixer to blend vegetable oil with diesel oil to make so called a mixed fuel supplying to diesel engines inline. In order to ensure a quality of the mixed fuel created by continuous mixer, a homogeneous testing was introduced with believable results. Then, the continuous mixer has been installed into fuel supply system of diesel engine 6LU32 at a lab of Vietnam Maritime University in terms of checking a real operation of the fuel continuous mixer with diesel engine.

This article shows the importance of the diagnostic improvement methods of marine engines to boost the economy and safety of operation of marine cargo ships. The need to implement effective diagnostic methods is justified by presenting statistical data of marine diesel engines failure and the cost of their operation. Based on the own research has been proven, for the chosen example, that indicator diagrams and analysis of indicated parameters have limited utility in the diagnosis of damages of marine engine, although this is a method commonly used in operational practice. To achieve greater diagnostic effectiveness, when, based on indicator diagrams, are calculated and then the characteristics of heat release is analyzed - net of heat release characteristics and the intensity of the heat release, it was demonstrated. This procedure is particularly effective in the diagnosis of damage of injection system components marine diesel engine.

Opis:
The problem of engine oils and lubrication systems of marine diesel engines is an important issue in operation of engines. When considering the problems of exploitation of machines and devices, the lubricating oils are treated as one of the part of engine design, which should perform the functions: control friction between load-bearing surfaces, limit the temperature by carrying away heat from fluid fraction and fuel combustion, reduce corrosion etc. – general protect engine parts. The knowledge of the properties lubricating oils allows for proper selection them for the engine and correct use. During operation, the oil subjects' irreversible process of oil deterioration and it cannot properly fulfil their functions. Therefore important are frequent periodic checks of oil, it means monitoring. The state of the lubricating oil can be characterized by parameters such as viscosity, total base number, acid value, lubricating ability, flash point etc. Changes on these parameters of engine oil during exploitation, cause problems in fulfilling the primary functions of the oil. The target of the paper was the analysis and estimate of properties of trunk piston engine oil – Marinol RG 1240 after various times overwork on the sailing vessel “Dar Młodzieży” on the engine Cegielski-Sulzer 6AL20/24. The results were compared with the values critical and preventive limits and proposed several corrective actions for users the engine 6AL20/24.

Opis:
The manufacturing of Catfish products has been developed rapidly in the Mekong delta. Every year, about 1.2 million tons of Catfish and 150,000 tons of biofuel are produced. The biofuel B100 manufactures in Mekong delta satisfies the America standard ASTM D6751; EURO EN 14214 or Vietnamese standard TCVN 7717. Mekong delta, a lower land area, has a large inland water way system with around 100.000 river boats that operate with marine diesel engine. Using the biofuel for the marine diesel engine in area will reduce the HC, CO, SOx and NOx emission to the environment. Therefore, with a study on applying the catfish biofuel, it will reduce the climate change by the increasing of sea water level and save energy by using green energy to replace petrol oil.

W artykule przedstawiono charakterystyki tribologiczne oleju obiegowego Titan Truck Plus 15W40 użytkowanego w bezwodzikowym silniku okrętowym Caterpillar 3512B. Badania wykonano na aparacie czterokulowym T-02 zgodnie z PN-76/C-04147. Producent silnika Caterpillar 3512B zaleca wymianę oleju co 1000 godzin. Na Rys. 2–5 przedstawiono przebiegi zmian momentu tarcia i temperatury przy narastającym obciążeniu elementów węzła tarcia smarowanych różnymi próbkami oleju. Próbki oleju pobierano z systemu smarnego silnika w zalecanym okresie eksploatacji.
The paper presents tribological characteristics of Titan Truck Plus 15W40 lubricating oil used in trunk piston marine diesel engine Caterpillar 3512B. The test results were collected by means of a four-ball extreme pressure tester T-02 according to PN-76/C-04147. The manufacturer of Caterpillar 3512B engine recommends lubricating oil change after every 1000 hours of operation. Figures 2 to 5 present the moment of friction and temperature courses for an increasing load of the friction nodes lubricated by different oil samples. Lubricating oil samples were taken from an engine oil system in recommended operating period. Based on obtained characteristics, seizure points Pt were determined. It was found that seizure point is not an authoritative index to asses lubricating oil. The essential is the change of friction moment in whole load range that makes it possible to determine the boundary layer destruction and its regeneration process in time.

The paper presents the results of lubricating properties tests of Titan Truck Plus 15W40 motor oil. Tested oil was used in Caterpillar 3512B high-speed engines, which propelled the tug boat. The lubricating properties parameters were determined for fresh oil and used oil samples. Builder of Caterpillar 3512B engine recommends lubricating oil change after every 1000 hours of operation. Lubricating oil samples were taken from engine oil system after 342 hours of service and after 1024 hours of service, it means just before lubricating oil change. The test results were collected by means of a four-ball extreme pressure tester T-02 according to Polish Norm PN-76/C-04147. The following lubricating properties parameters were determined: weld load Pz, maximum nonseizure load Pn, seizure load Pt and load wear index Ih. Investigations showed that for used oil samples maximum nonseizure load and seizure load increase but weld load and load wear index decrease. These results indicate that used oil has higher boundary layer resistance (better antiwear properties) but worse antiseizure properties, which are determined in hard working conditions of the sliding node elements. In author’s opinion, worsening of the antiseizure properties results of solid impurities presence, which come from lubricating oil deterioration process. To verify that thesis the detail analysis of the tested oils chemical content has been made. Spectrol Q100 spectrometer, which can specify content of 24 chemical elements in the lubricating oils was used for this purpose.

The paper presents the results of lubricating properties tests of Marinol RG 1240 motor oil used in trunk piston marine diesel engines and modified by chemical interaction aftermarket additives – Motor Life Professional and Mind. The test results were collected by means of a four-ball extreme pressure tester T-02 according to Polish Norm PN-76/C-04147. The following lubricating properties parameters were determined: weld load Pz, maximum nonseizure load Pn, seizure load Pt, load wear index Ih and load limit of wear Goz. Investigations showed that tested chemical interaction aftermarket additives improve load wear index Ih, and seizure load Pt (in case of Motor Life Professional), simultaneously impair maximum non-seizure load Pn. Weld load Pz remains on the same level. But the load limit of wear Goz which characterises the wear resistance in extremely hard working conditions increases considerably- 542% for tested oil with the addition of 5% by volume of Motor Life Professional and 520% with the addition of 5% by volume of Mind additive. These results indicates that tested aftermarket additives can form additional boundary layer (independent of lubricating oil boundary layer) which activates in extreme working conditions (very high temperatures and loads) of the sliding node elements. That layer could protect machines elements against seizure. In authors opinion, modifying of motor oils (provided with antiwear and antiseizure additives by the manufacturer) by chemical interaction aftermarket additives can increase durability and reliability of the machine elements especially in hard working condition for example frequent starts and load changes, overloads, operation in polluted atmosphere (transport, mining, building engineering etc.).

Other restrictions of vessels emissions, enclosed in rules set out in Annex IV of Marpol Convention 73/78 are gradually implemented and establish emission limits for ship engines. The boiler delivers the heat energy required for fuel preparation for main and auxiliary engines - and also by consuming fuel in its combustion chamber becomes and emitter. This article describes the anticipated methodology of the boiler steam efficiency, depending on the main engine installed. Additionally, fuel oil consumption analysis in various steam capacity range performed using the histograms. The histograms were produced on the basis of service reports of similar units, and combining fuel oil consumption with exhaust emission during operation. A vessel engine report includes monthly machinery abstract and is compiled for a ship-owner on the basis of the log book records. Quantified exhaust emission from auxiliary oil fired boiler contributes determination the overall emissions from a ship.

Opis:
The issues connected with the amount of lube oil in engine oil system are real problems in marine diesel engines maintenance process. The amount of lube oil in circulation influences its quality and consequently the wear of lubricated parts. That amount still changes and is connected with lubricating oil refilling strategy. The results of simulation carried out for SULZER 8S20U and PIELSTICK 12PC2-5V engines allowed to determine the influence of lubricating oil refilling strategy on the amount of lube oil in circulation. Frequent topping-up at regular intervals can be arranged to maintain the sump working capacity at the chosen percentage of the design maximum (for example 90 per cent), while a significantly delayed topping-up might allow the working capacity to be reduced to as low as about 50 per cent of the maximum. Thus a significantly reduced lubricant amount may have a disadvantageous influence on engine elements wear (i.e. piston rings, cylinder liners) and consequently cause the growth of the engine overhaul costs, although in far perspective, it would be difficult to connect that fact with the amount of oil in circulation. On the other hand in small output trunk piston engines without sump tanks, delayed topping-up and operation with minimum oil level could give some economic and ecological advantages resulting from reduced oil consumption. But in marine conditions (rolling and trim changes) it would be very hazardous for the engine safety operation.
