Opis:
The paper presents research on the number of large and middle−sized mammal species and changes in their populations (1996−2005) in Polish national parks. The greatest number of native mammalian fauna was found in the Carpathian and the eastern national parks. Clearly the smallest number of mammalian species were recognised in the southern uplands, north−western and especially the Sudety region parks. Non−native species of large mammals, which were almost non−existent in the Carpathian parks, occurred in the remaining regions – primarily in the north−western part of the country. The number of native mammalian species in Polish national parks was positively correlated with longitude and in the mountains − negatively correlated with latitude.

Opis:
Muskrat, Ondatra zibethicus (L. 1766), is an introduced species to European fauna. It is widespread in Poland, however signs of it decline were observed in last decades. While most of information on muskrat is based on questionnaires and bag record, in this paper results of field census for muskrat signs (tracks and feaces) at total of 1554 sites are presented. Signs of muskrats were present at 19,5% of 1111 sites surveyed from 1996-1998, and at 5,3% of 413 sites surveyed in 2007, Muskrats inhabited mostly small and medium rivers in western part of the study area. Decrease in occurrence of the species over a study period is best document by significant reduction in frequency of muskrat records at the 249 sites surveyed in 1996-1998 (present at 44% sites) and 2007 (7%). The decline of the muskrat population is most probably the effect of increasing predation by American mink Neovison vison.

Opis:
Fire is a disturbance that influences global ecosystem structure and function. It is also widely used as a management tool to achieve conservation goals. Wildfires can have highly destructive effects on habitats and their biota. Non-volant animals, such as small mammals, are among the most vulnerable to fire. To date, little is known about the reaction of these animals to fire events in fire-adepted, fast-recovering habitats. Here, we present a systematic literature review to analyse and evaluate the impact of fire on small mammals in open habitats. Most studies were carried out in the New World (Australia, North and South America) in fire-prone habitats. Most of them (74%) focused on forests, and only a quarter (26%) were conducted in habitats with herbaceous vegetation. These 15 articles formed the basis for analysing the response of small mammals living in open areas to fire disturbance. Surprisingly, the effects of fire were of short duration (less than one year) in most studies, and the regeneration of small mammal communities was related to the rate of regeneration of vegetation cover and habitat structure. A crucial factor was fire intensity; the highest diversity of small mammals was associated with low-intensity fires, that resulted in unburned habitat patches (so-called microrefugia). In open areas such as pastures, prairies and meadows, small mammals can survive fires in shelters such as burrows. This systematic review demonstrates that there is a continued focus almost exclusively on fire-prone habitats, whereas due to global change, fire disturbances will be more common and severe in "fire naive" ecosystems in boreal and temperate zones. Significant gaps in the understanding of the recovery ecology of small mammals in open habitats after fires have been identified. Future research should focus on how individual traits of small mammals affect their settling success in burnt

In this study effects of burrowing by badgers and foxes on forest soil and vegetation were examined. Burrow digging resulted in increasing topsoil alkalinity and changing the availability of some nutrients. Soil disturbances supported higher diversity of herbaceous and woody plants, and favoured the occurrence of fugitive and nutrient demanding species. Badgers had stronger impact on soil and vegetation than foxes.

Opis:
Maintaining biological diversity is one of the main goals of modern forestry. To reach this objective we need to know how management practices affect forest species. This study summarizes the results published in papers on the influence of clear−cutting on small mammals. Most of the studied species increased in abundance on clear−cuts. The response of voles (Microtus agrestis and M. arvalis) was uniformly positive. Mice (Apodemus flavicollis and A. sylvaticus) and shrews (Sorex araneus and S. minutus) varied in their responses but generally their number increased on clear−cuts. Bank voles (Myodes glareolus) appeared to be associated with the heterogeneity of habitat rather than with the age of forest stands per se. Nevertheless, our knowledge on the effects of forest management on small mammals is far from complete. In particular, there are almost no studies on the subject conducted in Western Europe or concerning management practices other than clear−cutting.

The potential usefulness of taphonomical research for studies of Pleistocene mammal remains is detailed. The required taphonomical research involves two stages. The first one is the biostratinomical stage, which concerns the time between the death of the organism and its burial; for this time-span, the spatial distribution of the remnants is analysed, as well as the weathering marks, the activity of predators (i.e. gnawing and digestion), the influence of temperature, intentional human activity, rodent marks (i.e. gnawing), and trampling. in the second one is the diagenetic stage, which deals with the time-span from the burial of the remnants to their discovery; for this time-span, the influence of physical and chemical processes (including diagenetic alterations of the deposit, the influence of water, and plant-root marks) are considered. The application of taphonomical analysis provides the possibility of reconstructing the environmental conditions under which the skeleton or bone complex was preserved, as well as the depositional history of the bones (postconsumption remnants, flood remains, accumulation of bones by predators). This opens new possibilities for the study of Pleistocene bones in Poland.

Repellent usage against rodents is almost not provided anymore. Permission to use many rodent repellent substances under European Union (EU) plant protection regulations has not been renewed in recent years. Some approval for chemical substances have not been renewed due to their toxicological properties, and for some biorational approvals have also not been renewed due to lack of financial support together with other concerns. Some other rodent repellent substances possessing accurate properties in a secondary way have also been withdrawn. Thus, the use of almost ten active substances is now illegal. The lack of support and the resultant orphan use may be explained by the relatively small market and possible business together with the expectations of modern substance application requirements. As a result, the opportunity to consider new biorational substances as candidates is therefore open. Plant based food substances are preferred candidates for plant protection considering their favourable toxicological characteristics. Capsicum oleoresin, a mixture obtained from two spice species (Capsicum annuum and C. frutescens), is one of them with appropriate repellent properties. An application under EU Plant Protection Product regulation has recently been submitted and may become a new repellent for biological control agent against seed predators.

The aim of the paper is to review the ancient sources devoted to the sea monster called κάμπη (f. ā-stem). Some researchers believe that it is also attested as κάμπος (n. es-stem). The zoonym in question, so named by the reason of a similarity of the marine animal to a caterpillar, evidently derives from the verb κάμπτω ‘to bend, curve’. The dramatist and philosopher Epicharmus of Kos (ca. 530–440 BC) was probably the first Greek writer who mentioned the sea monster κάμπη. Such a supposition is confirmed by the gloss κάμπη· κῆτος παρὰ Ἐπιχάρμῳ, registered in Hesychius’ lexicon (5th–6th c. AD). According to most modern lexicographers, the alternative form κάμπος n. ‘a sea monster’ is attested in one literary work in the form of the genitive plural καμπέων (Lyc., Alex. 414). The author intends to verify whether the alleged variant κάμπος (n. es-stem) is an authentic lexical item or a doubtful guess.

Nest boxes for dormice (Gliridae) can significantly increase the habitat’s carrying capacity for these species in areas under high anthropopressure and facilitate the long-term monitoring of populations. As part of the active protection of dormice in the Carpathian Landscape Parks in Małopolska, in August and September 2019, 575 boxes of two different sizes were checked for the presence of adults, young or nests. Additionally, habitat conditions within a 25 m radius were recorded (e.g. forest stand, estimated understory cover, the approximate number of natural shelters, fruiting plant species). The vast majority of all nest boxes – 79% – were used by dormice, but also birds and insects frequently occupied these shelters. Out of four species of dormice that occur in Poland, two were recorded in the study area: hazel dormice Muscardinus avellanarius and fat dormice Glis glis. They were found in all surveyed landscape parks and inhabited mainly fir stands. Hazel dormice preferred smaller nest boxes and were generally more common than fat dormice, which preferred large boxes. On the other hand, fat dormice were more common in areas rich in fruiting plant species. Our research thus confirmed the usefulness of artificial shelters for dormouse in active protection
