Opis:
European culture of the modern and contemporary periods is often associated with socalled social mythology, which arose in the 19 century as a specific type of spiritual activity aimed at creation and dissemination of political myths. Social mythology studies mythical consciousness as a form of public consciousness regarding new phenomena of the reality, a reason for change in historical processes and development of national communities. All national histories include descriptions of feats of ancient heroes and kings, who promoted nation's exaltation, strengthening of the national spirit, establishment of national states, etc. Wide propagation of mythology marks the evolution of nationalism and dissemination of socialist trends in the 19-20 centuries. Contemporary ideology tries to use myths, since it understands their specific effect on people. Besides, it is implementation of social myths that makes manipulation of the populace possible. Most frequently employed in contemporary mythology and ideological systems are the Myth of the Hero, Myth of Return to the Origins and Myth of Noble Origins. The 20 century saw these myths to be implemented in Nazism (Hitler's Germany), SocialCommunism (Soviet Union), as well as in democratic ideology. Social myth propagation media are in line with the development level of society and its scientific and technical potential. Society is most influenced by mass media – press, radio, television, web, etc. Mass media also play a part in mythologization of personalities, their transformation into images which later on, if in agreement with the public demand, serves as a model. Mythologization is widely applied in advertising. In the contemporary world, ads are inherent in human life. Advertising has crossed the boundaries of commercial communication and generally market business to embrace all human spheres: everyday life, politics, social, intellectual and cultural activities. Dissemination of information shaped as social myths through the intricate network of mass media is a means of ideological, political, economic and cultural influence on the human mind and behavior. Messages sent embrace the whole gamut of psychological impact ranging from informing and instructing to persuading and suggesting, which facilitates mass manipulation and determines specificity of cultural evolution.

In the article, I undertake to interpret Bruno Schulz’s prose using the methodological proposals introduced in the humanities by Gilbert Durand, a French anthropologist of imagination. Based on the implemented research perspective, the aim of the hermeneutics of The Street of Crocodiles and Sanatorium Under the Sign of the Hourglass was to unveil and discuss the imagined figures which form the anthropological network of meanings. The purpose of the array of anthropological and myth-criticism research tools used for analysing and interpreting the literary works which constitute the core of Polish literature was to define the author as an imagination phenomenon that seems to fill a research gap visible in Polish Schulz studies.

Opis:
The articles researches the concept of political culture as a system of inherited political notions expressed in symbolic forms and generalizes the differences between the political culture of Ukrainians and Russians. It stresses that the cultural identity of Ukraine is established on one of its basic tendencies – penchant for archaization of all symbolic forms; it researches the place of the heroic political myth in this process; it analyzes sacral projections of the political in the myth through which the subject-and-object order of the Ukrainian politics world is explained. Thus, the pattern of the heroic monomyth (a structured ontological range of symbols) serves as a program of political reality (as a structured order of political objects). The symbols of the heroic monomyth have sacral significance because they present an idea of political order, stability, forecastability of politics (the latter is lacking in the crisis context of development) when there is unwillingness of a part of citizens to bear responsibility for prospects of future development of events in the country in the conditions of long-term uncertainty. The article researches peculiarities of the how the structure-image of the hero builds the constitution of political reality in Ukraine and Russia.

Opis:
Central Europe – a community of texts. Intertextuality as a  plane of functioning and maintaining the myth of Central EuropeIn this article I examine two primary (sets of) questions:1. How, why and by whom the concept of Central Europe has been (re)constructed, (re)defined and (re)imagined within the field of literature in the course of the 20th century(?); and2. Through what transformations this concept has gone during the major social and political shifts in the region(?). In order to do so I am employing Roland Barthes’ semiological approach on myth in the analysis of the texts in which concept and the myth of Central Europe is constituted. I argue that these texts, creating the myth of Central Europe, use/adopt/resemantize texts/signs which previously functioned in other semiological systems. While the so called Habsburg Myth is its core structural element, the myth of Central Europe adopts/reinterprets even such cultural texts in relation to which it stands in ideological opposition – for example the myth of national tragedy. Referring to the concept of discourse community, introduced and developed in the linguistics and literary theory by John Swales, as well as to the concept of intertextuality, I argue that Central Europe can be approached as a community of texts within which the notion of the Central-Europeanness is (re)evaluated, (re)imagined and thus historically maintained.

Opis:
This article concerns the issue exploring myth in the context of the iconic turn. Iconic turn, opposed to formulating images as texts, signs or illustrations, treats both images and imagery as categories of cultural phenomena analysis. Attributing theory-cognitive status to images, the article explores the relation between cognition, imagination, image and myth. Considering the differentia specifica of mythical thinking – imagery, we can say that the assumptions of iconic turn are at the very heart of myth knowledge issues, especially the issues of myth and mythopoiesis. They also reach the problems of separating basic mythical images as cultural images, image acts as constituting myths and the relation between the imagery and textuality of myth.

Opis:
The article explores the limit phenomenon in terms of its participation in the process of the formation and transformation of meanings. The functioning of the concept is considered on the basis of the dramatic poem Cassandre by Lesya Ukrainka. Since the work is based on myth and itself imitates the structure of a myth, thus revealing a noticeable feature of European culture at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries regarding the fundamental developments of mytho-critical schools, the border phenomenon is illuminated through the prism of two aspects – content and form. The first aspect focuses on existential meanings; it is about the formation or transformation of meanings at the moment a person reaches his limit or the limit of the world (first of all, a meeting with fate or death). The second aspect concerns the phenomenon of myth and the manifestation-formation of new meanings at the moment of interaction between the myth matrix and its literary interpretation. The focus of the analysis on the threshold phenomena of Cassandre demonstrates the playwright’s skill in working with the ancient myth. Lesya Ukrainka preserves the outline of the myth and the literary image of the Trojan prophetess, but also inscribes new meanings that are relevant to her time, thus universalizing them, and revives myth itself as a universal form of preserving and transporting meanings
