Opis:
The article, based on the results of nationwide sociological research, answers the questions of the extent to which religion actually determines the Poles’ behaviours. It analyses the ways in which people cope with cognitive dissonance between their religious identity and their opinions/habits etc. which do not conform with the official teaching of the Catholic Church. It also examines the issue of social expectations about changes in the Church and its teachings.

Opis:
Religiousness of people who perceive themselves as believers, but who do not participate or rarely participate in religious practice, takes a form of spirituality when in their own perception they do no harm to others, which in turn is interpreted as abiding by the rules |of Christian morality. Striving for perfection is both a religious attitude and spirituality in one due to both internal consciousness of one’s imperfection, as well as external consciousness of the imperfection of other people (49% believe that there are good and bad people depending on the circumstances). Moreover, these people treat religiousness and morality as private matters which cannot be governed by any institutions, including the Catholic Church. Extending the perception of God to a concept of impersonal “higher power” leads to a situation where the belief in destiny understood in an esoteric way is present even in declarations of deeply devout people who participate in religious practice systematically. As a result of that the concept of sacrum is also extended and includes any forms of life and existence in the universe, interpreted in a religious sense (pantheism and panentheism), as well as the rule of common good (supermorality) which is entailed in the conviction that one cannot break this order, so do evil. Moreover, the anthropomorphisation in the world of nature results in moral values taking the form of pan-morality and being transferred to the whole world of nature. They cover not only people, but also the nature itself.

Opis:
Artykuł omawia relację prawa i moralności w rozwiązywaniu problemów prawnych.
This article describes the relation between law and morality when applied to solving legal problems. The relation in question is not understood solely as a conflict between law and morality which implies a need to decide in favor of one or the other. Indeed, moral contents of law make references to morality not only possible but necessary. The limit for those references is established by legal equality principle. Moreover, an internal variety of morality is being analyzed. Some part of it needs to be secured by law what in itself does not harm social and individual identity, that is, public and private morality is distinguished, then minimal and maximal morality – concepts proposed by Michael Walzer. That idea taken from a legal point of view leads to seemingly best funded proposal: particular and cooperative morality.

The Bible says that "all authority comes from God." But what if the authority is corrupt and abusive? The author of the article analyses the duty to resist a corrupt authority when it threatens inalienable human rights, the common good or the sacredness of authority itself, for example a tyranny or an act of an usurpation. The author examines the conditions which must be fulfilled in order that such forms of resistance as: admonition, protest, rebellion (civic disobedience), strike and uprising can be legitimate. It is important to bear in mind the obligation to obey even a corrupt authority insofar as it can be objectively stated that it serves the common good.

The aim of the article is to present tensions that occur in social, cultural, political, and technological spheres as the result of the development of postmodern societies. The changes that have been taking place in those areas involve, along with unquestionable benefits, a type of risk which, without any moral reflection, can cause a serious global crisis in the world. The postmodern times should be understood as the continuation of the modern formation where all typical features of modernism take a more radical form. The postmodern specific style of life is characterized by: uncertainty, unpredictability of future, decline of traditional values and morals. What is more, the present postmodern tendencies in the area of morals can hinder the right course of development for society, economy and ecology.

Opis:
Since the beginning of the 1980s, a study has been conducted among students of economics in the United States regarding their propensity for cooperation, philanthropy and keeping promises. Regardless of the methods used, the research results have shown lower readiness for cooperation among students of economics in comparison to students of other disciplines. Moreover, the results are even worse after completing a microeconomics course. Based on these findings, two hypotheses have been formulated: the auto-selection hypothesis and the indoctrination hypothesis. The aim of the paper is to formulate implications regarding the indoctrination hypothesis. A massive attendance at economic studies in Poland is an argument against the auto-selection hypothesis. However, unless the research is completed, this hypothesis cannot be rejected. The indoctrination hypothesis is more attractive due to the special cognitive and moral condition of post-communist society which economic studies lecturers are members of and due to the economic situation of higher education institutions. These circumstances which accompany the studying of economics in Poland favour, firstly, the introduction of highly specialised curricula which do not prepare students for understanding economic activity as a means for good life. Secondly, economic knowledge is interpreted by lecturers as a set of instructions to manipulate market players. Thirdly, lecturers’ attitudes and activities reflecting the principle that what is not legally prohibited is allowed are “awarded” with a higher financial status. These implications will be made probable by the analysis of the curricula and content of lectures in economic schools. Attention will be mostly focused on microeconomics; the main “defendant” accused of indoctrination in the American studies.

The paper concentrates on the views of Polish philosophers of law, who in the period 1918–1939 were presenting their opinion about the necessity of the separation of law from morality. Leon Petrażycki (1867–1931), Szymon Rundstein (1876–1942), Eugeniusz Jarra (1881–1973), Antoni Peretiatkowicz (1884–1956), Czesław Znamierowski (1888–1967), Eugeniusz Bautro (1891–1961) and Henryk Piętka (1900–1959) were the most outstanding lawyer-philosophers of this period, who dealt with the essence of law, different kinds of legal norms and the relations between the norms. They represented different schools of law and their views about law differed substantially. But their views on the separation of law from morality were similar in many aspects. The majority of them agreed on the separation of law from morality, following the Immanuel Kant’s and his followers’ approach on this topic. There was one important exception. Leon Petrażycki, the most outstanding Polish philosopher of law at that time, created the so called psychological theory of law. He criticized Kant’s and Kant’s followers’ approach, but the conclusions were quite similar.

Contemporary societies are increasingly pluralistic, even in terms of their values, ideals, and norms of behavior. What should the state and its institution’s attitude be toward citizens who have different and sometimes contradictory views on moral issues? One proposition is the principle of neutrality, particularly in the most controversial areas. This article outlines the characteristics of basic models of ethical neutrality and their practical application in specific areas of social life. A critical assessment of the consequences of introducing this principle sheds light on the need to search for a different definition of the state’s role in morality.

Opis:
The primary purpose of advertising is to provide information about a product and the company producing it. Provided the product does not pose any risk to the buyers, this objective should not raise any ethical objections. However, in the modern world, advertising seems to pursue also other goals, thus promoting a form of ideology, according to which human life is meaningful and valuable only when it creates the possibility of unlimited consumption. Instead of helping the clients in their consumer decisions, what the advertising is trying to do is to manipulate them, thus destroying traditional values and replacing them with new ones (or rather quasi-values). Looking at the phenomenon of advertising from a wider perspective, one cannot help but observe that rather than trying to adapt their products to the needs of the customer, global companies transform the customer (i.e. de facto human) to become the buyer of their goods. As a result, the influence of advertising is that alongside a new set of customs, new attitudes and views are created or, to be more precise, a new type of human.

The author is convinced that the morality is one of the most important factors, which condition creating of humanistic relations between people, and also an individual relation of person to natural environment. At present the moral crisis is visible on society. This crisis concerns especially the process of revaluating the moral rules. On the market societies everything alienates and everything is for sale. Every nation or nationality has its own history and own culture, which can be a new foundation for shaping a new morality. Morality and moral worths(values) problem are one of the most important problems undertaken by belorussian philosophy. Basic meaning for moral and spirit education has the believing in God and contents of Christian education. This education is inspired by belorussian intellectual tradition founed on works written by Simeon Połocki and Cyryl Turowksi. They both says that a man is responsible for his own deeds before a God and society. In author conclusion we can read that Turowski’s and Połocki’s considerations are still actual, so now is the right time to come back to source of belarussian culture and avert a moral crisis.

Morality, which is the subject of the study of sociology, is socially constructed reality, a specific social construction. The social form of morality is created through communication processes, however individuals are also able to create a subjective hierarchy of moral values and norms. Thus, a sociologist studies the interrelationship of these phenomena and their development. Morality appears at different levels and in different scopes. There are four types of morality that the author discusses in this article: religious-Church morality, religious morality apart from the Church, non-religious morality and individualized morality. Morality in a sociological perspective includes all values, norms and behavior viewed from the point of view of right and wrong.

Socjolog bada wzajemne związki tych zjawisk i ich rozwój. Moralność jawi się na różnych poziomach i w różnych zakresach. Opis:
A steady increase in the use of intoxicants is being confirmed by empirical studies. One of the factors conducive to drug initiation is the rejection of moral norms associated with religious beliefs. The article presents the relations established between the youth’s declared religiousness and their statements on psychoactive drugs and using them. The data were collected through questionnaire surveys carried out on a randomly selected sample of high school students from the Podkarpackie region (n = 2273). The research results suggest that the process of secularisation and relativisation observed among the youth, particularly in the sphere of morality, may weaken critical attitudes towards psychoactive substances, both those legally allowed and those prohibited by law. Moreover, the links between the declared religiousness and such variables as: time spent on the Internet, acquaintances who are drug users, being raised by a single parent or both parents as well as the frequency of conversations between respondents and their parents were established. The connections between these variables are statistically significant, so it can be concluded that these distinguished variables influence the diversity in religiousness stated by participants and consequently the liberalisation of the youth’s attitudes towards drugs.

The purpose of the article was the analysis of two topics: the freedom and new society in Steiner’s philosophy. Steiner in The Philosophy of Freedom postulates that the world is essentially an indivisible unity. He suggests, that freedom can only be approached gradually with the aid of the creative activity of thinking. The ability to think and act independently is a possibility for modern consciousness. The process of free action also includes the liberation from given (unreflected) natural driver, instincts and the commands of reason or authorities. The free action, are those for which we are fully conscious of the motive. He concludes, that freedom is the spiritual activity of penetrating with consciousness our own nature. The most striking feature of Anthroposophy will be deemed, at first sight, to be the cultivation of the soul’s inward life and the opening of the eyes to a spiritual world. But these doctrines are the foes of real life. The best situation would result if one would give people free way. He has the trust that they would find their direction themselves.

The author of this article hope to show the essential meaning of the Japanese perspective on law, order and security. Since the 1950s in the USA and European countries we have been witnessing the global expansion and popularity of Budō (Far- Eastern martial arts). Those martial arts positively influence the improvement of security culture. The authors want to show that it is worthwhile to study the achievements of Japanese culture, not only because of their different characteristics, but mainly because they emphasize honor and tradition, which are the specificities of uniformed and public services. The purpose of the creation of “The Seventeen-Article Constitution” was the implementation of ethical principles, which would ensure the security of the state and its residents. This document was based not only on Buddhism, already firmly rooted in Japan, but also on Confucianism. In this work we read that “the Constitution” included the principle stating that each person is part of a particular group, and should live in harmony with other members. Thus, it means to show respect toward all people and to rid oneself of negative thoughts, emotions and actions. “The Seventeen-Article Constitution” also includes the foundations of central management. Moreover, it is considered to be the initial Constitution of Japan.

Empathy and psychopathy seem to be two distant extremes, which only differ, with nothing similar. Therefore, the question that seems to be surprising is whether such a theoretical perspective is justified. Empathy exerts significant influence on social relationships and is associated with moral development, whereas psychopathy seems to be an opposite phenomenon, as it is associated with the lack of deep interpersonal bonds and the violation of legal norms. As studies from various disciplines and scientific areas indicate, such concepts as behavioral effectiveness, morality or altruism might help explain the complex nature of the interrelationship between psychopathy and empathy. The authors tried to explore and describe the complexity of the two presented concepts in the light of the conducted research, and the resulting theoretical and empirical implications.

The article looks at attempts to use the legal and moral concepts of Zygmunt Ziembiński in bioethical considerations. Assuming that law is determined by morality, the an example of an unborn child is used to examine how these combined factors can be applied in bioethics. According to the author, the most interesting aspects are the proposals formulated by Ziembiński. In his opinion, the liberal theory of Ziembiński’s law, which expands on the views of Maria Ossowska and Czeslaw Znamierowski, deserves special attention. In summing up, the author comes to the conclusion that the concept of Ziembiński’s law can find universal application in bioethics, thanks to its more than subjective practical applicability.

The moral standards presented in the Bible are unveiling themselves in the process of the cultural and the theological development. Quite frequently the biblical morality stands in the context of an idea of the Covenant. Eventually in the very heart of the biblical ethic we’re finding values which were fundamental for a specific kind of a human existence and human way to God. The way the Bible understands as the Covenant which is constructed on the primary and the constitutive gift of a relation between the human being and God. The theologians of the Covenant are pointing out universal ethical conclusions even thou those findings are connected with only one nation chosen by God. At the culmination point of the development of the Covenant idea, in the New Testament proclaiming, takes place an annunciation of morality which has its core in the law of love. This kind of law is understood as a new creatio. Its essence is a dynamic character of morality which comes from an unchanging moral rules. God – staying unchangeable in His gift of morality – allows the human understanding of the gift of love to mature continually in fluently changing historical reality.

Giving a brief (1) introduction of robot morality, the essay analyses Malle’s concept of moral competence (2) and discusses its consequences (3) for the future of robot science. The thesis will further argue that Malle’s approach is insufficient due to three reasons: his function argument is very simplifying and therefore troubling; each component of his theory is inconsistent and, finally, closely connected to our common understanding of personhood, which raises new philosophical questions surrounding the basic issue of if and/or when machines can be considered people.

The Christian moral life can be compared to a path marked out by particular stages. The beginning of this path is no less important than its end, which is perfection in the temporal dimension and salvation in the ultimate spiritual dimension. Contrary to popular opinion, the beginning of the path is not associated with an individual’s personal desire to be perfect; rather, it is a gift from God, who accompanies man throughout his entire life and needs his free response. Among the many gifts that God imparts to man, man receives essential gifts in the sacrament of Baptism. These gifts constitute the subject of moral action itself; they interiorly form man without determining his actions absolutely or depriving him of his freedom. A “new,” free, and responsible action, the fruit of which is man’s perfection as an individual and as a member of a natural and supernatural society, flows from this interior transformation. The basic character of the gifts of the sacrament of Baptism is that they are the source itself of a specifically Christian morality and not just an ordinary aid in the moral life.

Civil society was defined in various ways. Among others, J. Locke, G.W.F. Hegel and A. de Tockeville presented the most relevant characteristic of what civil society is or could be. For the purpose of the paper we distinct civil society and the state. To the first one we assign spontaneity and diversity, the second we treat as procedural and homogeneous. In the paper we will stand for the thesis: civil society is the nest of virtues and as such characterized plays one of the most prominent parts in contemporary social and political reality. The problem is not that presently civil society does not exist. The problem is that once it was established within the state, it has been developed in such a way that it became a hybrid combined from the state and what could be called apolitical human activity. The core of the problem is that the hybrid is more political than apolitical. To the essence of civil society belong: existence of free associations of any kind, economy free from political coerce as much as it could be and public sphere of opinion, all organized in such a political way that the political power is limited by division of it to three independent institutions: a legislature, an executive and a judiciary and also by the law. A ground for apolitical human social activities was prepared by J. Locke in his political theory. The state is one of possible emanations of apolitical society in the state of nature. Montesquieu expanded such a vision of society that it exists within the state but the state itself is limited by division of political power and civil rights which allow the members of the society to protect their freedom and dignity. Moral civil society we are developing protect the citizens from overwhelming influence of the state and particular egoisms of individuals. As such it promotes moral activity, it brings trust to the public sphere and it protects human dignity.

The economist Deepak Lal researches the influence of morality and religion on the shaping of capitalism in different civilizations. His thought was confronted with the remarks of other institutionalists. Lal tries to find out what was the influence of the cost of transactions and the religious beliefs on the evolution of capitalism in chosen countries and regions. Lal claims that materialistic beliefs of agricultural civilizations had not played the key role in the economic growth. The reforms in the Church in the Middle Ages allowed to spread of the instinct of exchange and production of homo oeconomicus. As a result the individualism started to dominate over collectivism. Lal tries to prove that the individualism was not the basis of the Christian faith. The following virtues as: diligence, discipline, frugality, self-help, self-control have had secular origin and nowadays they are more common in India and China than in the West. The Asian civilizations face the dilemma during the economic expansion of the West. They had to choose the path of their development. China and India followed Japan and they modernized without westernization. They tried to find middle course between the tradition and the modernity. We tried to emphasize in the article, that none of the religions have determined the economic fate of the countries. Rather, the morality of the societies and the decision-makers’ beliefs had an influence on economic development.

The philosophical basis of a legal system is the determinant factor of the content and focus of the legislation and judicial decision emanating from the legal system operating within the society. The focus of every legal system should be the pursuit of a society where men’s ambition is actualise within the purview of accepted norms and values guiding the people within the society. The aim of this paper is to examine the concept of morality and law, the intricate relationship between the two concepts and the moral contents in the Nigeria legal system. The methodology adopted is basically doctrinal with the primary source from various legislation and case laws. The secondary source includes articles in journal, internet sources, bible, etc. The paper concludes that there is no distinction between morality and the law but that the two concepts should be seen as complementary to each other in terms of regulating human behaviours. It is also our conclusion that a critical examination of Nigeria legal system through her legislations and judicial decisions is predicated on the basis that law and morality are two sides of the same coin.

In this article the author would like to touch a problem of the religion as an element of the adult religious people's life, specifically the element participating in the formation of an individual set of the moral attitudes. The group he is interested in is constituted by the Judaic, Catholic and Protestant worshippers. The main reason which inclined him to undertake the signalled problem is its practical dimension. Personally, he has an irresistible impression that morality is losing more and more of its importance in today's, especially highly developed, societies. Superseding such values as Good and Truth, pleasure, utility and profit increasingly become the leading values. He is certain that we live in the days of something what he would call the crisis of morality; morality in general. Therefore, a clear need both of reflection and action that tends to find the foundation which this fading morality could be rebuilt on and the sources which the principles and the instruments essential for this rebuilding could be derived from. The author's project is a part of the search of these sources and the area he explores is religion. He tries to investigate moral attitudes of the Judaic, Catholic and Protestant worshippers and also to verify whether the religion has an influence on these attitudes, and if it has, is this attitude a possitive one.

Opis:
The article aims in arranging the discourse concerning the celebrities’ morality that is visible in their behaviour which is made public by mass media. It indicates the problematic reasons and consequences of this phenomena. The text concentrates on the priority of profit in the promotion mechanism: “morality of the celebrities”. The narration is derived from the notion of “celebrity” and develops into approximating of possible understanding of morality connected with celebrities’ views – it qualifies the opinions on the level of situation- based existential ethics. On the example of a fragment of breakfast television programme: Dzień Dobry TVN, the article depicts difficulties with grasping the core of this moral orientation. Afterwards, the article discusses a problem of media influence and, consequently, the celebrities’ influence on the recipients. It shows a scheme of profit-oriented media creation of celebrities and the way in which they state moral issues.

O negatywnej ocenie moralnej postępowania dłużnika i osoby trzeciej jako przesłance skargi pauliańskiej

Opis:
The paper presents the thesis according to which the immoral (or at least morally indifferent) nature of the debtor’s action is a prerequisite for actio Pauliana. Consequently, the defendant (third party) may raise the defense of the debtor’s moral behaviour. If the debtor’s conduct complies with moral standards, the legal act could not be regarded as detrimental (relevant to actio Pauliana), even if it resulted in the creditor’s detriment. The acceptance of the possibility of raising the defence seems necessary from the perspective of the axiological coherence of the legal system. Adopting the proposed interpretation result would also ensure an appropriate balance in the implications of the use of non-linguistic interpretation directives in relation to the provisions constructing the institution of the actio Pauliana. Should the accuracy of the above argument be acknowledged, Article 527 para. 2 of the Civil Code would, in fact, construct a presumption of the debtor’s immoral behaviour. It would be difficult but not impossible to refute the presumption in practice.
Przyjęcie proponowanego wyniku wykładni zapewniałoby również odpowiedni balans w przyjmowanych konsekwencjach zastosowania pozajęzykowych dyrektyw wykładni w odniesieniu do przepisów konstruujących instytucję skargi pauliańskiej.

Opis:
In the era of contemporary moral crisis, diverse problems and menaces of today’s world, proper education and in particular the right education of under-standing and feeling truth and freedom plays an essential role. Education of a young person for these values is fulfilled best in a family because a family influences young person’s life to great extent. If education did not introduce these values, it would be harmful not only for the young person but also for the whole community. A strong position of family as the source of truth and responsible freedom should influence and inspire all institutions and people engaged in educational process, which should always be integral: It should comprise a person fully and all his or her fields of life where his or her vocation should be fulfilled.

The article outlines the main directions of the evangelization of the Church Fathers in the 5th and 6th centuries and the numerous obstacles which they encountered in their pastoral ministry. The spreading of pagan practices, magic and all kinds of superstitions were still visible even among the baptized people. Another problem they had to face, no less difficult to overcome, was a moral dissolution, as well as rampant alcoholism. Hence their sermons so often featured merciful God, ready to forgive every person. They also pointed some ways to deepen one’s faith. Thus they tried to form a Christian society, guided by the spirit of the Gospel in every sphere of life.

Opis:
The article is an attempt to link the philosophy of Levinas with the bioethical issues of the beginning of human life. The author refers to those statements of Levinas in which he describes who a person is, what is human body, being male/female, fatherhood. The ethical-anthropological character of Levinas’ thought makes it a profound source for contemporary discussions on moral themes, bioethical problems included. However, certain difficulties arise on account of the philosopher’s highly individual language. The aim of the article is to confront the language o f Levinas with the traditional language of Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy and colloquial language. The text is a proposition how to build bioethics not only on Aristotelian-Thomistic philosophy or utilitarian or pragmatic philosophy but also on the philosophy of Levinas, as it sheds additional light on the problem of man, existence, life and interpersonal relations.

Opis:
Boghossian’s (2003) proposal to conditionalize concepts as a way to secure their legitimacy in disputable cases applies well, not just to pejoratives – on whose account Boghossian first proposed it – but also to thick ethical concepts. It actually has important advantages when dealing with some worries raised by the application of thick ethical terms, and the truth and facticity of corresponding statements. In this paper, I will try to show, however, that thick ethical concepts present a specific case, whose analysis requires a somewhat different reconstruction from that which Boghossian offers. A proper account of thick ethical concepts should be able to explain how ‘evaluated’ and ‘evaluation’ are connected.

Opis:
The subject of shame appears in moral theology especially in conjunction with a reflection on marital and family life, for which – as it emphasizes – an important form of preparation is nurturing the feeling of shame, especially at the level of sexual life. Studies of moral theology rarely talk about shame negatively. Meanwhile shame, in addition to all its positive aspects, can also be bad; personally and socially destructive. Shame may have the wrong object and an exaggerated intensity. Therefore shame, like every emotion, requires formation and subjecting it to reason and will, and above all harnessing it in the service of love.
