Przedmiotem tekstu recenzyjnego są dwie publikacje monograficzne poświęcone Edvardowi Griegowi: Bernarda Piotrowskiego Edvard Grieg. Życie – Fascynacje – Dramaty oraz Agnieszki Dybowskiej-Błoch Edvard Grieg. Życie i twórczość 1843–1907. Są to jedyne tego typu pozycje w języku polskim. Wyszły one spod piór nie muzykologów, lecz skandynawistów. Z powodu popularności muzyki norweskiego twórcy w Polsce, a więc szerokiego zasięgu tych publikacji, za konieczną uznałam ich wieloaspektową ocenę. Równoczesne omówienie dwóch pozycji dotyczących tego samego twórcy pozwala na porównanie różnych sposobów przedstawienia sylwetki i dorobku artysty. Rozważana jest wartość tych pozycji dla szerokiego grona odbiorców, jak i dla osób szczególnie zainteresowanych muzyką i dla muzykologów.
The subject of the review text are two monographic publications devoted to Edvard Grieg: Bernard Piotrowski's Edvard Grieg. Życie – Fascynacje – Dramaty [Edvard Grieg. Life - Fascinations - Dramas] and Agnieszka Dybowska-Błoch's Edvard Grieg. Życie i twórczość 1843–1907 [Edvard Grieg. Life and work 1843–1907]. These are the only Grieg's publications of this type in Polish. They were written not by musicologists, but by Scandinavian philologists. Due to the popularity of the music of the Norwegian artist in Poland, and thus the wide range of these publications, I considered it necessary to evaluate them in a multi-faceted way. The simultaneous discussion of two items concerning the same artist allows for a comparison of different ways of presenting the artist's figure and output. The value of these books for a wide audience as well as for people particularly interested in music and musicologists is considered.

It is difficult to imagine the history of literature devoid of such mode of research expression as monography. It is still a popular form of synthetic expressions (after all the history of literature is condemned to synthesis). At the same time, however, a literary historian can base his actions less and less often on the theoretical-literary reflection. What vectors could turn us today towards a contemporary reading of literary texts – the reading which is far not only from ingenuous naivety but also from dangerous confidence in the power of individual research concepts? Some contemporary postulates of reading ethics give answer to these questions. They induce us to be distant towards any theoretical-literary or ideological prejudices and hence to the responsibility for the research method and the language describing a work of art. It seems that a thought which returns in the reflection of literary studies about the subjectivity of reading, about the necessity of considering the sphere of values in the process of reading (which modern ethics of reading calls for) induces to turn towards interpretation, return to the author and to axiology.

The aim of the article is to free the pedagogical monograph method from the limitations imposed on it in the mid-20th century. Descriptions of this research method will be related to the specificity of the context and the needs it was supposed to satisfy at the time. Changes in the socio-economic and technological context will justify the removal of the existing limitations from the pedagogical monograph. As a result of this analysis, I propose ways to use this research method in contemporary pedagogy.

Despite some minor shortcomings, the reviewed monograph, or rather its first part, is a long-awaited publication. Thanks to the holistic approach of the authors to the studied subject matter, we get to know the panorama of the former city and the surrounding villages, which not only coexisted side by side, but also intertwined to create a history. One could say, we see a fragment of it on a centuries-old ribbon of time. The book is also a valuable work in terms of regional research. Getting to know the past of your small homelands allows you to bond the ties of contemporary generations, as well as to cultivate the memory of the heritage of local ancestors. The advantages of the reviewed work also include colored illustrations, maps and clear information contained in the tables listed.
Pomimo drobnych mankamentów recenzowana monografia, a właściwie jej pierwsza część, stanowi długo oczekiwaną publikację. Dzięki holistycznemu podejściu Autorów do badanej tematyki poznajemy panoramę dawnego miasta i okolicznych wsi, które nie tylko współistniały obok siebie, lecz także przenikały się, tworząc historię. Można rzec, widzimy jej wyrywek na wielowiekowej wstędze czasu. Książka stanowi cenne dzieło także pod kątem badań regionalistycznych. Poznawanie przeszłości swoich małych ojczyzn pozwala zespolić więzi współczesnych pokoleń, jak również pielęgnować pamięć o dziedzictwie lokalnych przodków. Do plusów recenzowanej pracy możemy zaliczyć także zamieszczone w niej kolorowe ilustracje, mapy i przejrzyste informacje zawarte w wyszczególnionych tabelach.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na książkę naukową jako przedmiot badawczy, istniejący na przecięciu socjologicznego nurtu badań nad szkolnictwem wyższym i badań nad rynkiem książki. Książka naukowa od lat dominuje na polskim rynku książki w zakresie liczby publikowanych pierwszych wydań, jednak jej znaczenie dla rynku wydawniczego uznawane jest za znikome. Równocześnie monografia naukowa, przez lata uważana – przynajmniej w obszarze nauk humanistycznych i społecznych – za „złoty standard” pracy naukowej, będący wyznacznikiem prestiżu i podstawą awansu akademickiego, zmienia swoją funkcję wraz z reformami szkolnictwa wyższego w Polsce, w coraz większym stopniu nastawionymi na docenianie artykułów w najbardziej uznanych czasopismach (najlepiej z impact factor) i publikacji w formule open access, a także w obliczu dokonujących się innowacji technologicznych dotyczących produkcji, opracowania i dystrybucji tekstu. Analiza tych przemian poprzez poznanie głównych interesariuszy (naukowców i wydawców, ale również bibliotekarzy, księgarzy, czytelników, nie zapominając o politycznych decydentach i gremiach eksperckich odpowiedzialnych za politykę w zakresie nauki i szkolnictwa wyższego) i ich zaplecza instytucjonalnego może nie tylko mieć znaczenie teoretyczne, ale także przyczynić się do dyskusji nad rolą wydawców naukowych i znaczeniem samej monografii naukowej w kontekście przyszłych reform szkolnictwa wyższego.
The aim of the article is to present academic book as a research subject at the intersection of sociological research on higher education and analyses of the book market. Academic book has been for many years the number one item on the publishing market as far as the first editions go, nevertheless its significance for the market is deemed minor. At the same time academic monograph, for many years considered, at least in the field of social sciences and humanities, as a “golden standard” of academic work, a criterion for the distribution of academic prestige, experiences the change of its function as an effect of the reforms of the higher education system in Poland aimed rather at valorising articles published in prestigious journals (especially those with IF) and open-access publications, as well as an effect of the ongoing technological change concerning the production and distribution of text. An analysis of these processes that takes into consideration the interests of main actors (researchers, publishers, librarian, booksellers, readers, and also political decision makers and experts responsible for the policies regarding science and higher education), the institutional infrastructure can thus have not only a theoretical value, but can also contribute to the discussion on the role of academic publishers and the significance of academic monograph in the context of future reforms of the higher education system.

The monograph on mulch and soil spiders (Araneae: Arachnida) which are to be found in the reserves of West Bengal (Jalpaiguri District) submitted for review has 222 pages of text, 2 tables, 494 black and white and 9 colour figures, and 26 colour plates. The whole treatise is supplemented with a list of references which includes 119 items, including the most important ones, such as World Spider Catalogue (2016). The final section contains an alphabetic list of Latin names being used throughout the said monograph. Within the area studied, 89 spider species have been reported that belong to 38 genera and represent 13 families. Apart from endemic species (38 species), the species brought into from other zoogeographic regions, such as Australian, Ethiopian, Nearctic or Neotropical Regions, have been reported. It is a pity that the authors did not attempt to explain the migration routes by which these foreign spiders for the area under study reached it. The treatise contains description of a newly discovered spider species that belongs to the genus Hamataliwa Keyser. Unfortunately, the authors did not fully explain the importance of this new species but only referred to a similar, previously known name. A difference in Latin names, i.e. in one or two “l”, is correct in zoological nomenclature but undoubtedly will create a lot of mistakes, especially as the two names belong to the same genus. Really beautiful and very accurate figures that characterise individual species are extremely valuable for the treatise being discussed. Also colour plates that show individual species as they occur in nature, that is before being placed in a preserving substance, are very useful. The monograph being presented greatly increases our knowledge on mulch and soil spiders of the studied reserves, and the same of the fauna of India, which is still considered one of the least recognised in terms of invertebrates.

Tematyka artykułu skupia się na prezentacji wartościowej poznawczo i artystycznie monografii krajoznawczej z serii „Cuda Polski” Gustawa Morcinka Śląsk, wydanej w 1933 roku. Region ten (Śląsk Zielony, Biały i Czarny) pisarz pokazał z punktu widzenia doświadczania polskości w procesie przemian i osiągnięć społeczno-kulturowych oraz cywilizacyjnych. W syntetycznych dziejach ziemi śląskiej autor zawarł refleksje o społecznych wartościach przestrzeni narodowych. W obrazach życia codziennego współczesnego pisarzowi wyróżniają się pod względem estetycznym opisy obrazów robotniczego trudu – górników i hutników. Wraz z ziemią tworzą nierozerwalną całość, kulturę materialną i duchową człowieka. W końcowej części reportażu Morcinek zbiera, systematyzuje i dopełnia cechy typowego Ślązaka oraz jego dokonania w dziedzinie kultury duchowej i materialnej. To kwestie w książce nadrzędne.Monografia była przedrukowywana we fragmentach w regionalnej i ogólnopolskiej prasie międzywojennej.
The article discusses the 1933 monograph entitled Śląsk (Silesia), written by Gustaw Morcinek. This informative and artistically distinguished volume was part of the Wonders of Poland series. Silesia (Green, White, and Black) was described from the vantage of the experience of Polishness caught in the process of sociocultural and civilizational transformation. A succinct synthesis of Silesian history made it possible for the author to reflect on the social values of native spaces. A particular emphasis is given to the esthetically elaborate descriptions of the everyday toil of Silesian miners and steel workers. They are firmly united with their land, thus creating the region’s material culture and spiritual identity. In the final part of his narrative, Morcinek collects, systematizes, and outlines typical traits of Silesian people together with their achievements in the realm of material and spiritual culture. These issues are given particular significance in the book. Parts of the monograph were published in the regional and national press in the interwar period.

Tekst jest recenzją książki "Під „Знаком Саваофа”, або „Там, де…” Ульяненко" (2020) autorstwa ukraińskiego literaturoznawcy Fliksa Shteinbuka. Wykorzystując autorską metodologię, opracowaną w poprzednich swoich monografiach Feliks Shteinbuk się we współczesne badania ludzkiej cielesności. Sprawia to, że jego analiza twórczości Ulianenki jest interdyscyplinarna. W przygotowaniu jest drugi tom monografii. Obie części składają się na najbardziej obszerną i najrzetelniejszą dotychczas literaturoznawczą analizę twórczości Ołesia Ulianenki.
The text is a review of the book 'Під „Знаком Саваофа”, або „Там, де…” Ульяненко' (2020) by the Ukrainian literary scholar Fliks Shteinbuk. Using his own methodology, developed in his previous monographs, Feliks Shteinbuk inscribes his literary analysis into contemporary research on human corporeality. This makes his analysis of Ulianenko's work interdisciplinary. The second volume of the monograph is in preparation. Both parts of the monograph make up the most extensive and most reliable literary analysis of the work of Oles Ulyanenko so far.
