AUTHENTICITY
CONTEMPORARY ART
MODERN TECHNIQUES OF CONSERVATION
Opis:
Authenticity is one of the most prominent factors determining the value of an art work as well as conservation theory and praxis. It exerts prime impact on defining decision strategies, and the significance, preservation, exposition and conservation-restoration of a given work. It also determines the form in which it will be passed on to future generations. In the past, criteria applied for assessing authenticity underwent a number of changes, and by the twentieth century they assumed a form defined in assorted codes of conservation ethics and procedure. Authenticity, however, is not an absolute and constant value, but succumbs to perennial transformations and reflects new truths and criteria. The article attempts to answer these questions within the domain of select problems and upon the basis of most recent international accomplishments. Philosophical premises act as a point of departure for a discussion on the conditions of the preservation of the authenticity of a contemporary art work, with the authoress considering the authenticity of matter, conception and context as well as differentiated approaches to the protection of old art according to the principles of technological correctness. Other questions involve the specificity, techniques and technology of present-day art and its impact on preservation and permanence. The presented reflections pertain to the uniqueness of the conception of a work of art, which can be detected by studying not only its structure but predominantly the artist's intentions. Just as important is the establishment of the context of space, place, culture or history. Attention is drawn to the necessity of distinguishing the complexity of particular, haptic-optic elements of the work of art and their mutual relations, which leads to the preservation of inner unity. The assorted problems are illustrated with examples of Polish and world art in whose cases the comprehension of authenticity was neither obvious nor unambiguous, and frequently resulted in falsifying the original message. Finally, the article examines the newest world tendencies and paths of conservation and protection, which designate the tasks, methods, forms and purposes of ventures intent on preserving the modern work of art together with 'in the full richness of their authenticity'.

Opis:
This paper outlines the history of the theatrical curtain that reaches back to ancient times. It also attempts to define its function and formulate a definition of this genre of art. In the Roman theatre there were two kinds of curtains: one that separated a part (Lat. siparium) or the whole of the stage from the audience (the so-called auleum). The historical evolution of the basic function of the curtain tended to enrich and elevate its meaning. The curtain should be regarded as an integral element of the theatrical interior, an individualised element and relatively autonomic. It was ornamented with woven, embroidered or painted representations. It also played a symbolic role, i.e. “the border of two worlds”: reality (on the part of the viewer) and illusive fiction (on the part of the theatrical action). The nineteenth and twentieth centuries saw some changes in the way to understand the “theatrical character”. As a result of them, the role of the curtain also changed. It became a part of the conception of stage design for a concrete performance. Eventually, the avant-garde of the twentieth century postulate to make the theatre “come closer to life”, therefore it questioned the division of the two “worlds” in general, and eliminated the curtain.

Opis:
The relationship between photography and sculpture, unlike the dialogue between the latter and painting, was long treated as a peripheral issue. Yet as early as the mid-20th century photography began to show potential that sculpture seemed to be lack. Aware of a large degree of overlap between the two forms of artistic expression, (e.g. with respect to materiality, spatiality, or accentuating frozen gestures) sculptors did not leave sculpture for photography, but attempted to create works that were interdisciplinary in structure. The rise of interest in photography displayed by Polish sculptors was closely connected with the evolution of the concept of sculpture. In the mid-20th century artists creating traditional sculptures (understood as a solid or as a visually rendered spatial form) began to experiment and cross the boundaries of well-established artistic tradition. The changes introduced enabled sculptors to interweave their field with other artistic disciplines, especially photography, even more closely. More and more frequently, sculpture started to establish multi-faceted relations with the new medium. At the beginning the potential of photography as a documentation tool was exploited. Then sculptors began to appreciate photography’s core values, using it to capture and preserve a given moment in time. Finally, they applied it in works that can be classified as close to hyperrealism. The employment of still newer materials and tools made the link between sculpture and photography inextricable, as can be shown through works of Polish artists.

The present sketch proposes an interpretation of one of the most important poems of the early poetry written by Marcin Świetlicki. At the same time, the reading of the poem is paired with a simultaneous analytical interpretation providing the standard analytical scheme usually applied to any poetical work (this scheme is based on a sequence of recognitions that refer to: 1. writing, 2. euphony, 3. semantics of spaces concentrated with meaning, 4. the structure of the presented world. A presentation of the four fundamental steps in the analysis is accompanied with a reflection on the paradox of interpretation, the corresponding model of which is in the poem the outlined mirror image of identity between the “opaque” depth and “overt” surface.

FEMINISM AND ART
Opis:
The essay was inspired by Pawel Dybel’s book The secret of the "other gender". Disputes around the sexual differences in psychoanalysis and feminism, in which he asked a question about the gender of logos. My – less ambitious – attempt was to try to describe the potential of gender in Polish conceptual art. The question is ahistorical, but there are a number of reasons to ask it. Many female artists that were very active during the time of conceptual incitation are invisible. Polish conceptualism which was formed be some artistic couples, historically has lost female faces. Some of these contributors – like Natalia LL or Ewa Partum – we can find out about in the discourse among first Polish feminist artists, but the question of women’s input into conceptualism is still open and does not attract enough interest of scholars. Maybe this is because of the fragile and delicate matter of an artistic partnership in contrast with the heroic notion of artistic individuality that is still attractive for conceptual artists. Maybe this is because of dangerous stereotypes about masculinity and femininity and male and female roles in artistic couples. There are very few scholars who are interested in examining the notion of collaboration in its very complex form. Much of the contemporary discourse on Polish conceptual art has been conveyed through exhibitions. This tactic may be seen as paying respect to the form of an exhibition – a specific, ideal medium to consider works of art not individually, but as they interact with each other. The specifics of conceptual works that were generally visually unattractive in the early seventies has changed, partly because of the most recent generation. The new face of Polish conceptualism is very conservative with regard to the lack of input by women. Unfortunately the belief popular among scholars and curators that women do not do ‘serious’ work still persist, but fortunately for those women artists who are active and visible – they found a useful label in the discourse. Placing them within the feminist movement, one should not forget their conceptual roots, and should delete the question as to whether their works were serious.

In the article I am analysing four artistic works: 1. “Das schöne Mädchen” (Beautiful Girl) by Hannah Höch; “Tête Méchanique” (Mechanical head) by Raul Hausmann; “All You Zombies: Truth before God” by Roberd Long; Cyborg by Lynn Randolph. Analysis of these artworks is used to show different ideological and aesthetic approaches towards techno-bodies.

Opis:
Conceptualism, as the art of an idea, placed itself beyond aesthetic and sensual experience. As a rule, it did not produce art objects which could be pleasing or that would represent reality. This rejection of an image places conceptualism in a broadly understood iconoclastic movement. When we examine various historical iconoclastic movements (religious and political) we may reconstruct the most important features of iconoclastic awareness and compare them with the essential postulates of conceptualism. The result of this comparison is a striking similarity of both phenomena. To mention just a few linking features of conceptualism and iconoclasm, we may enumerate: a doubt in the adequacy of the relationship between an idea and image, a fear of an idolatrous belief in a material art object, a drive to demystify art and artists, a concentration on a word instead of an image. Iconoclastic mentality can also be characterised by analytic thinking, progressive attitude and irony. However, the question arises if iconoclasm can exist without idolatry; or if conceptualism could have developed without a material object? Even if it rejected it, then the art world (museum, critics, audiences) that shows a progressively stronger tendency to contextualise, flung conceptualism out of “art’s orbit into the ‘infinite space’ of the human condition” (to use the words of J. Kosuth).

Opis:
In Polish literature devoted to art history one can easily find information concerning scholarships of Oskar Hansen, Lech Kunka, Kazimierz Ostrowski and Tadeusz Romanowski at Fernand Léger Atelier in Paris. The subject is not strongly present in Polish art history therefore it is worth reconstruction. It shows that the French culture was still very important for Poles. What is more, the painters were in Paris at the very important moment in the French history, when existentialism and spectacular activity of the French Communist Party were developing. Abstraction and surrealism were very popular in visual arts. But Polish students were influenced by artists associated with communism. The students received scholarships funded by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs which worried about strong influence of American culture in Europe at this time. That was the reason why so many students from Eastern Europe got this kind of scholarship. On the other hand it was the last moment to get it. The relations between two countries were getting worse and worse. The Polish students could study at the Academy of Fine Arts for free. Nevertheless, they chose the Fernand Léger Atelier. It is possible to reconstruct the nature of studies at the Fernand Léger Atelier thanks to memoirs of his students. I refer here to texts written by the Pole, Oskar Hansen, the Frenchman, Pierre Faniest and the American, Bruce Gregory. The master attended the atelier only once a week therefore the school was managed by his assistants strongly influenced by communist ideology. The atelier was located at a large building in Montmarte and was full of still lifes à la Léger. Most of students imitated the works of the master and only strong individuals kept their style. Correction of the works was quite bizarre. Léger used to say just one sentence and the best not one could get was „C'est costaud” („It's strong”). The master gave also lectures at the Atelier, showed his works and avant-garde films. Every year Léger organised the competition and exhibition of students’ works at the gallery outside Atelier. The scholarship at the Fernand Léger Atelier was particularly important for Lech Kunka and to a lesser extent for Kazimierz Ostrowski. Kunka was interested in the master’s works created during his stay in the United States (paintings where colour was separated from the line). He mixed also features of Léger style (thick black contour with pure colours) with fascination with Pablo Picasso or works from the Museum of the Human Being. Kazimierz Ostrowski was mainly inspired by the work Les Constructeurs. He mixed influences of Fernand Léger with Klee or Matisse's works. Probably also mural paintings created by both artists after return to Poland were under influence of Fernand Léger. The end of the French scholarship was astonishing. Kazimierz Ostrowski's exhibition in Sopot in 1950 was closed after few hours. Oskar Hansen didn’t take part in Polish artistic life. The cultural policy changed diametrically. The socrealism came and in the next few years nobody could take advantage of foreign scholarships.

In the article I attempt to analyze Kathrin Röggla’s “cinematic style” using a theory which assumes the simulation of media-related forms in literature (e.g. Philipp Löser’s works). Her literary style is characterized by features such as film metaphor (e.g. the “dual perception” phenomenon), editing seemingly unconnected scenes, citations from TV and interview recordings, and narration inspired by film techniques such as time-lapse and slow motion. The author seems to be fascinated by Japanese anime and Harun Farocki’s film essays. David Lynch’s and Tom Tykwer’s masterpieces function as metaphors for today’s entangled reality in her work. In “tokio, rückwärtstagebuch” she depicts the culture clash phenomenon similarly to Sofia Coppola in Lost in Translation. Both Kathrin Röggla and Susan Sontag criticize the voyeuristic personality of modern man and the influence of our media-dominated culture on the means of artistic expression.

In addition, the significance of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem of reception of Italian literature in European culture is mentioned as one of the aims of the lecture. Moreover, main problems of the course, such as themes of reintepretation of Italian classics in visual arts, music, cinema and theatre, are discussed on the background of „classroom dynamics” which characterize the group of students with different knowledge of Italian language and different cultural competences.

The paper reflects on attempts to achieve revelation, epiphany, or enlightenment in the modern world. Sometimes the hope of reaching this state accompanies dangerous mountain trekking expeditions. However, it is believed that revelation can be achieved more quickly through drug use, practiced by artists from the nineteenth century onwards. Seeking visions in this way is part of the cultural tradition of the North and South American Indians. In the twentieth century, such artists as Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell and others alluded to these practices. The Russian tradition had a different way of achieving illumination. Avant-garde artists (such as Malevich or Kandinsky) drew inspiration from it, seeking sudden revelation combined with surprise. The paper concludes with the author’s reflections on the possibility of personal experience today that would exceed the cognitive limits through contact with certain works of art, ancient and modern.
Poszukiwanie w ten sposób wizji należy do tradycji kulturowych Indian północno- i południowoamerykańskich. W XX wieku nawiązywali do nich Pollock, Rothko, Motherwell i inni malarze. Odmienny sposób osiągania iluminacji właściwy był dla tradycji rosyjskiej. Artyści awangardowi (np. Malewicz, Kandnsky) inspirowali się nią poszukując nagłego objawienia połączonego z zaskoczeniem. Opis:
According to the widespread opinion, contemporary art does not seek to express transcendent reality. Questioning this view, the author of the article examines two aspects of the problem. The first concerns the use of Christian iconography in contemporary works. The artists employ it a non-traditional way, usually in the contexts related to everyday life, which leads to an impression of secularization. Sometimes such actions provoke protests from viewers due to alleged blasphemy. Sztabiński sees the root of the problem in the formation of a new sensibility bent on emphasizing the “earthly” dimension of existence, and treating transcendence only as a more or less tangible prospect. This situation is defined here as an interest in the “skin of transcendence”, in reference to the title of the article by S. Brent Plate. Artistic examples enabling the author to clarify the meaning of this metaphor include the works of Robert Gober, Kiki Smith, Teresa Murak and Wolfgang Laib. The second type of references to transcendence in contemporary art will be discussed here in the context of the iconoclastic tradition. The author examines twentieth-century non-representational art in the light of the book by Alain Besançon devoted to the intellectual history of iconoclasm. Besançon described this kind of art as an expression of the desire to convey “a truly worthy image” of the divine, as it is liberated from all earthly concerns. In view of that, can postmodern artistic practice, involving the reduction of the geometric forms believed to express transcendence (such as Malevich’s “black square”) to their banal practical uses, be considered to create simulacra of transcendence? The author also reflects on the quest for an extra-metaphysical path towards transcendence in contemporary art, as the artists try to find it in “abnormal language” and private epiphanies. The article concludes with some comments on the necessity of treating what appears to be marginal in contemporary art as a valid area of research. The author argues that not only the margins of transcendence, but all other artistic margins should be subjected to broader scholarly reflection.
Autor rozważa też poszukiwanie poza-metafizycznej drogi ku transcendencji w sztuce współczesnej poprzez operowanie „nienormalnym językiem” i prywatne epifanie.
