Opis:: In this paper we study the relationship between foreign firm ownership and innovation activities in a wide group of West European and Central and East European countries. Based on a dataset including more than 100,000 firms covered by the 2014 edition of the Community Innovation Survey, we examine the role of home- and host country effects in firms’ decisions to introduce various forms of innovation. In addition, we identify a group of foreign-owned firms that specialize in exporting and interpret them as participants of hierarchic global value chains organized by multinational enterprises. We show that while foreign direct investment, especially from Germany, is positively associated with innovation, the opposite effect is observed in the case of hierarchic global value chains’ participants. The negative impact of within-multinationals global value chains on innovation is more pronounced in the affiliates located in the Central and East European countries

Opis:: International flow of capital in the form of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) is considered to be the primary form of capital transfer in the global economy. It plays an important role among other forms of international capital flows, due to the intensity of its streams and its strength of impact on local economies. Host countries use FDI to finance activities such as industry restructuring and transfer of technology. The aim of this paper is to present current achievements in the field of theoretical explanations of FDI – its main motives. The article relates also to current selected trends in FDI flows during the economic downturn caused by the recent financial crisis. Above all ,however, this paper aims at showing FDI theories in terms of a knowledge intensive economy.

Opis:: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused various disruptions in the production chains of Multinational Enterprises (MNEs). Among other disruptions there is a drop of product sales, often due to lock-down measures, which resulted in last-minute order cancellations, non-payment of the already purchased resources and already made products, and hence terminations of employment contracts. International organisations and nongovernmental organisations have called upon MNEs to take their corporate social responsibility (CSR) and honour the contracts. The aim of this article is to analyse to what extend this moral appeal is also a (quasi-)legal appeal following from international norms on CSR. After an assessment of the main labour law problems caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, an analysis follows on each of the identified problems. The conclusion of the analysis is that MNEs indeed are not only morally obliged to take their responsibility, but also based on the (quasi-)legal international CSR norms.

Opis:: Abstract: Aim: This paper investigates how a framework for analysing business sectors in emerging markets looks like when taking into account the local context-dependent and general factors of The Bottom-of-the-Pyramid (BoP). The BoP segment in emerging markets represents a major growth potential for firms, including multinational enterprises (MNEs) from developed countries. However, the continued lack of success of MNEs in these markets has shown that generic one-size-fits-all strategies for the BoP are not appropriate as BoP contexts differ between countries. Design / Research methods: The sample that was selected for the research includes two non-governmental organizations (NGOs) related to the BoP and eight managers at MNEs with activities in the BoP have been interviewed in a semi-structured manner to collect rich data. Conclusion / findings: By interviewing eight managers at MNEs with activities in the BoP and two NGOs related to the BoP, an additional analysis, BoP-orientation, and further extensions to the original analyses are being presented. This results in an advanced framework for analysing business sectors in emerging markets. Originality / value of the article: Current frameworks for analysing business sectors in emerging markets do take into account inter-country differences but fail to recognize intra-country differences, which causes them to fall short on their applicability to the BoP. This paper fills the gap how frameworks for analysing business sectors in emerging markets can be made applicable for the BoP by taking into account both the local context-dependent and general factors of a BoP-market to analyse it for opportunities, threats, and eventually and strategic entry mode.

Opis:: Multinational enterprises (MNEs) are the leading entities in the process of global economic integration, whose international expansion would be regulated and constrained by environmental issues. Drawing on theories of corporate social responsibility, corporate environmental behavior and legitimacy, this paper establishes a grounded process model that has both theoretical and practical significance. The model reveals that development of sustainable competitive advantage of MNEs is a gradual process that is dependent on the corporate environmental behavior and the legitimation of their behaviors. Via a real in-depth case study of Badische Anilin-Soda-Fabrik (BASF), one of the largest chemical companies in the world, the application and effectiveness of the proposed process model are demonstrated. Also, implications of this model and future directions for both research and practice are indicated.
Przedsiębiorstwa międzynarodowe stanowią wiodące podmioty w procesie globalnej integracji gospodarczej, których ekspansja międzynarodowa powinna uwzględniać regulacje i ograniczenia związane z ochrona środowiska. Niniejszy artykuł, opierając się na teorii społecznej odpowiedzialności biznesu, jego wpływowi na środowisko i legalności działania, przedstawia model istotny zarówno z poziomu teorii, jak i praktyki. Model ten pokazuje, że budowanie zrównoważonej przewagi konkurencyjnej przedsiębiorstw międzynarodowych jest procesem stopniowym, zależnym od podejścia do środowiska. Zastosowanie i skuteczność proponowanego modelu wykazano na przykładzie jednego z największych zakładów chemicznych na świecie, którym jest Badische Anilin-Soda-Fabrik (BASF). Zaproponowano także przyszłe kierunki badań, tak w kontekście naukowym, jak i praktycznym.
