    Opis:
    The article investigates the structure of romance and grief narrative included in Bobbie Ann Mason’s “Shiloh,” on the basis of Patrick C. Hogan’s th eory of literary universals and his work on aff ective narratology. Following Hogan, I argue that emotions are deeply embedded in stories and that stories are typically designed so as to manipulate the aff ective responses of their readers. I will focus on the way the story depicts prototypical stages of romance and grief and where it deviates from universal narratives involving concerning grief, separation, attachment, and romantic love, arguing that the aff ective and aesthetic potential of the story lies precisely in where it departs from these prototypical narratives. At the same time, I shall speculate on how discourse organization manipulates the formation of aff ective schemata and empathic alignment in readers.

    Volunteer environments usually consist of a large number of computing nodes, with highly dynamic characteristics, therefore reliable models for a planning of the whole computing are highly desired. An easy to implement approach to modelling and simulation of such environments May employ agent-based universal simulation frameworks, such as RePast or MASON. In the course of the paper the above-mentioned simulation frame Works are adapter to suport simulation of volunteer computing. After giving implementation details, selected results concerning computing time and speedup are given and are compared with the ones obtained from an actual volunteer environment.

    The article shows the figure of Edward Tuckerman Mason as an author, editor and publisher. He was born on 10th April 1847 in New York City (d. 1895). He began his ca-reer as a theatre critic in 1866 in the “New York Word”. This paper presents E.T. Ma-son’s notes the manuscripts of which have been found in the reading room of New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center. They present excellent de-scriptions of E.T. Mason’s plays. As every detail of the plays is described in the notes, they retain the ‘charm’ of the characters of Ophelia and Macbeth by Modrzejewska and Booth. Mason’s Salvini’s Othello, Modrzejewska’s Ofelia, Booth’s Macbeth remind of Konstanty Puzyna’s idea to create a permanent section of plays description in Dialog.

    The function of vestibulum (the outermost empty brood cell, without provisioning mass and larvae) has not been precisely determined so far. It is most probably a behavioral relic, which currently has no adaptive value. However, red mason bees often build vestibulum. In this study, we examined the nest tubes of red mason bees in three sites (Kłoda, Kanie and Warsaw) in Mazovian Province and in one site (Sąpłaty) in Warmian-Masurian Province. About 70% of the nest tubes in Kłoda, Kanie and Warsaw had vestibulum, whereas only 29% of the tubes in Sąpłaty had vestibulum. It can be assumed that the vestibulum protects the brood against unstable atmospheric conditions, and the proximity of the lake Sąpłaty reduced the temperature amplitude. It was found, however, that the vestibulum did not protect the brood cell against nest parasitoides and cleptoparasites. More cells were infested by parasites and kleptoparasites in tubes with vestibulum.
    Funkcja vestibulum w gnieździe murarki ogrodowej Osmia bicornis L. Funkcja vestibulum (najbardziej zewnętrznej komory gniazdowej) nie została dotychczas dokładnie określona. Prawdopodobnie jest to behawioralny relikt obecnie bez żadnej wartości adaptacyjnej. Jednak pszczoły chętnie budują vestibulum. W trzech miejscach badań: Kłoda, Kanie, Warszawa (woj. mazowieckie), w 70% rurek gniazdowych znajdował się przedsionek. Stwierdzono, że murarki gniazdujące w Sąpłatach (woj. warmińsko-mazurskie) vestibulum wybudowały jedynie w 29% rurek. Można przypuszczać, że przedsionek chroni czerw przed zmiennymi warunkami atmosferycznymi, a bliskość jeziora łagodziła amplitudy temperatury. Stwierdzono natomiast, że vestibulum nie zabezpieczało komórki z czerwiem przed pasożytami i kleptopasożytami gniazdowymi. W rurkach, które miały vestibulum, stwierdzono więcej komórek porażonych przez pasożyty i kleptapasożyty.

    The rules of Mennonites, a faction of Anabaptists, were established by a former Catholic priest, Menno Simons (1496-1561). At first, the movement expanded in the region of Friesland and Netherlands. Due to the escalated persecution, Mennonites were forced to migrate. First groups that settled in Gdańsk arrived in the middle of the 16th century. In 1800 Mennonites were allowed to be granted civic rights in Gdańsk and, therefore, could construct their own house of prayer inside the city's fortifications. The church was built at the foot of Biskupia Górka in 1818-1819 by Bretschneider and Fuchs, who were respectively a masonry master and a carpenter. The structural principles, which were adopted by the constructors, made it the only classical sacred building in Gdańsk. Its uniqueness was also determined by its distinctive structure. In the course of time, House of Prayer's neighbours were to be¬come a so-called Preacher's House, a stylistically different building which was constructed in 1883-1884, and a poorhouse, which was built eighteen years later. Owing to their presence, it is the only complete complex of buildings preserved in Poland that served the Mennonites in the past. Apart from the history and architecture of the House of Prayer in Gdańsk, the article out¬lines the context of Mennonites' architecture and the influence of Gdańsk's church on the structure of Mennonites' house of prayers erected in the area of today's Russia and Ukraine.

    Artykuł skupia się na pochodzącym z połowy XIX w. medalionie z kolekcji bibliofila Ludwika Gocla (1889–1966). Powstał on w 1854 r. w stolicy Stanów Zjednoczonych, Waszyngtonie, a wyobraża prominentnego XIX-wiecznego Amerykanina, sędziego Charlesa Masona (1804–1882). Został zaprojektowany i wykonany przez wybitnego polskiego rzeźbiarza i medaliera, Henryka Dmochowskiego (1810–1863; w USA znany był jako Henry Dmochowski Saunders), uczestnika polskich powstań narodowowyzwoleńczych, zasadnie nazywanego „żołnierzem artystą”. W 1851 r. przybył on do Ameryki, gdzie dane mu było pracować jako rzeźbiarz. Głównym celem niniejszego szkicu jest przedstawienie zarysu losów tytułowego medalionu, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zasług Ludwika Gocla dla jego zachowania. To rzadkie dzieło sztuki nie zostało opisane w żadnej polskiej ani amerykańskiej publikacji z zakresu historii rzeźby.
    The essay will focus on a mid-nineteenth century medallion from the vast collection of Polish bibliophile Ludwik Gocel (1889–1966). Made in 1854 in the U.S. capital, Washington, D.C., it depicts a prominent nineteenth century American, Judge Charles Mason (1804–1882), and is a valuable token of the U.S. history. It was designed and completed by Polish distinguished medalist, Henryk Dmochowski (in the U.S. known as Henry Dmochowski Saunders; b. 1810–d. 1863) who can be called a “soldier-artist,” since he participated in three Polish uprisings. Expelled from partitioned Poland, in 1851 he came to America where he was offered the chance to work as a sculptor. This essay’s main aim is to describe the fate of the medallion, apparently almost unknown in both America and Poland, with special emphasis on the role of Ludwik Gocel in its preservation. This rare piece of art has never been included in Polish or American art publications in the field of sculpture.

    Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań petrograficznych wybranych obiektów kamieniarki ludowej okolic Jaślisk i Komańczy, na podstawie których wykazano zastosowanie piaskowca przybyszowskiego w lokalnej rzeźbie, rzemiośle i budownictwie. Podkreślono udział kamieniarzy łemkowskich w rozwoju jaśliskiego regionu kamieniarskiego oraz ich wpływ na rozwój lokalnej kamieniarki polskiej. Ukazano także zasięg oddziaływania cechowych zakładów kamieniarskich z Krosna.
    The article presents the results of petrographic analysis of selected masonry objects from near Jaśliska and Komańcza, which prove the use of the Przybyszów sandstone in local sculpture, craft and building construction. The Lemko masons contribution to the development of the Jaśliska mason centre and their impact on local Polish masonry are emphasized. The range of Krosno guild masonry influence is also shown.

    The purpose of this article is to present a certain episode from the history of railroads in China – the reaction of diplomats and British business entities to the actions of the Railway Rights Recovery Movement (shouhui luquan yundong) during the final years of the Qing dynasty rule. First, a broader historical context is outlined, and within it the earliest attempts to establish railway infrastructure in the Middle Kingdom and Chinese policy on this matter. Then, British activities, aimed at protecting the concession to build the railway link between Shanghai, Hangzhou and Ningbo, are described. An important thread is the issue of the way of thinking and reaching certain conclusions among British diplomats and so-called China Hands regarding the growing assertiveness of China in its relations with global powers, which was observed at that time, and an increasing resistance of this country against external economic control, including the area of railway investments.

    Opis:
    Flow graphs are the effective tool for description of the complicated microwave measurement systems and usually are used in the process of creating measurement equation. The algorithm which can find this equation is known as the Mason's gain formula (MGF). This operation needs to perform a lot of symbolic computations so performing of this algorithm without proper software is heavy and is vulnerable to appearing some errors. This paper shows which existing scripts for MATLAB can be use to perform this task.
    Grafy przepływu są skutecznym narzędziem umożliwiającym opis skomplikowanych układów pomiarowych w technice mikrofalowej i zwykle są stosowane w procesie tworzenia równania pomiaru. Algorytm umożliwiający znalezienie takiego równania jest znany jako reguła wzmocnienia Masona. Wymaga on znacznej liczby obliczeń symbolicznych toteż jego realizacja bez zastosowania oprogramowania jest uciążliwa oraz podatna na wystąpienie błędów podczas wykonywania przekształceń. W niniejszym artykule wskazano możliwość zastosowania istniejących już skryptów programu MATLAB do realizacji tego zadania.
