Pultusk meteorite
Opis:
Mössbauer measurements of one sample of the Pułtusk meteorite were performed at room temperature (300 K) and at temperature of liquid nitrogen (80 K). Following mineralogical phases were identified in Mössbauer spectra: olivine, pyroxene, troilite, kamacite, taenite, and a doublet associated with ferric iron. The differences in the percentage of spectral areas obtained for all subspectra are very small. It means that in the range of these temperatures the Debye–Waller factor is the same for all mineralogical phases present in the investigated sample.

In the present work the phase constitution and magnetic ordering of the magnetocaloric LaFe11.0Co0.8(Si0.4Al0.6)1.2 alloy in the as-cast state and after annealing at 1323 K for 1 h (in case of ribbons) and 49 days (in case of bulk) were studied. For bulk and ribbon samples in as-cast state three crystalline phases were identified: dominant ferromagnetic alfa-Fe, minor ferromagnetic La(Fe,Co)Si and traces of paramagnetic La(Fe,Si)13 phase. Appropriate heat treatment resulted in the evolution of phase constitution of the alloy, where two crystalline phases were developed: the dominant paramagnetic La(Fe,Si)13 phase and a minor fraction of the ferromagnetic alfa-Fe for both bulk and ribbon samples.

Opis:
This paper reports the results of 57Fe Mössbauer study of stilpnomelane K0.6Fe6(Si8Al)(O,OH)27 .2H2O from Żółkiewka (Lower Silesia, Poland). Stilpnomelane in paragenesis with chlorite, tourmaline, claevelandite and zeolites has been found in granite pegmatites in quarries at Żółkiewka. The samples of naturally weathered stilpnomelane and chlorite from the same fragment of rock were also studied. The Mössbauer spectrum of an untreated sample could be fitted to two Fe2+ doublets and two Fe3+ doublets. The Fe2+ doublets have similar isomer shifts, but they distinctly differ in values of quadrupole splittings. Ferric iron, octahedrally coordinated occurs in three different environments represented by two doublets. The first of them, assigned to combined M1 + M2 positions and the second one assigned to M3 site with parameters IS = 0.36 mm/s and QS = 2.07 mm/s is visible in the spectra up to 880°C. This doublet is characteristic of stilpnomelane and can be regarded as a "fingerprint" of this mineral. After heating at 200°C, the relative content of Fe2+, ÓFe2+/ÓFe, decreases to 0.22 what means a 50% decrease in comparison to the initial value observed in the untreated sample. At about 1000°C, complete breakdown of the stilpnomelane structure takes place and the Mössbauer spectrum consists of two sextets and two ferric doublets. Abnormally high content of Fe2+ in naturally weathered stilpnomelane (0.70) comparing to the untreated sample of stilpnomelane (0.45) indicates that the sample had to be subjected to hydrothermal processes operating locally. Almost the same contents of divalent iron and hyperfine parameters of Fe2+ and Fe3+ doublets in weathered stilpnomelane and associated chlorite suggest that the process of chlorite transformation into stilpnomelane seems to be very probable.

A description of the Mossbauer spectrometer MsAa-4 is given. The spectrometer has a modular design and it could be used as the gamma-ray spectrometer as well. It has almost entirely digital design to assure stability and repeatability. It is powered via the rechargeable battery to make it immune to the power failures. All settings are performed remotely over the Ethernet link used also to transfer data and spectrometer functions. External CAN bus could be used to attach auxiliary equipment. The status of the external equipment could be used to control spectrometer functions. Internal digital oscilloscope monitors vital functions of the spectrometer over the Ethernet link. Driving software operates under Microsoft Windows registered trademark systems and it is fully compatible with the Mosgraf-2009 data processing suite.

Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements were performed before and after hydrogenation of YFe2 Laves phase in order to investigate the effect of hydrogen on their structural and magnetic properties. The experimental results show an instant change of both the lattice parameters and the hyperfine field. The results are interpreted due to the phase decomposition of the parent intermetallic in the aftermath of creation of stoichiometric hydrides YHc (c = 0.9; 2.5).

The Nd2Fe14B cylindrical magnets were treated with water solutions of alkali, acid, and salt. Mössbauer spectroscopy was applied to study the composition and properties of the surface material of the treated magnets. It is shown that the main phase of the permanent Nd2Fe14B magnet partly decomposes. The released α-Nd at the grain boundaries interacts with water and forms neodymium hydroxide matrix, and the released Fe diffuses into it. The presence of Fe-Nd(OH)3 is refl ected in the paramagnet doublet in the Mössbauer spectra of treated neodymium magnets.

Magnetic nanowires of Fe, Fe-Co, and Fe-Ni alloy and layered structure were prepared by electrochemical alternating current (AC) deposition method. The morphology of the nanowires in and without the matrix was studied by energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. The wires either show strong dependence on the combination of elements deposition (alloy or layered) or chemical composition (Co or Ni). The magnetic properties of the nanostructures were determined on the basis of Mössbauer spectroscopy (MS).

The goal of the paper is to identify characteristic features of the surfaces of rubbing bodies and friction products, which come into being when friction processes are realized under optimal conditions, regarding wear resistance. Mössbauer investigations carried out both in scattering and transmission arrangement have evidenced, between others, differences in oxides content and their phase composition, depending on the temperature of tribological system in the course of friction test. It has been found that the wear products obtained at the optimal temperature are composed of the much smaller particles than those produced at lower or at higher temperature.

This paper reports preliminary results of 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of metamict davidite samples (La,Ce,Ca,Th)(Y,U,Fe)(Ti,Fe,Mn)20(O,OH)38 after high temperature annealing in an argon atmosphere. The Mössbauer spectra show a gradual decrease of quadrupole splitting and line width values of an Fe3+ doublet with increasing annealing temperature. Rather unexpected feature of these spectra for an Fe2+ doublet is a considerable increase of the line width with progressive crystallinity and a simultaneous decrease of both quadrupole splitting and isomer shift values. Changes of the hyperfine parameters as a function of the annealing temperature appeared as sensitive indicators of the thermal recrystallization process of metamict davidite similar to metamict silicates.

The study investigates the physical and chemical properties of fly ash and bottom ash from a power plant ELCHO in Chorzów, Poland. Coal combustion products generated in the process of combustion in circulating fluidized beds (CFBs) are considerably different from fly and bottom ashes obtained from dust furnaces and multi-layer ones. The composition of the iron-bearing phase in the waste of circulating fluidized bed combustion was determined using Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) methods.

CeRhSn does not order magnetically down to 2 K while NdRhSn undergoes ferromagnetic transition at TC = 10.3 K and GdRhSn orders antiferromagnetically below TN = 16 K. Our CeRhSn and NdRhSn samples become superconductive below 6.5 K and 6.9 K, respectively.

This paper reports the results of 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and gamma-ray spectroscopy studies of partially metamict gadolinites from Szklarska Poręba and Zimnik (Lower Silesia, Poland), a fully metamict gadolinite sample from Ytterby (Sweden) and a crystalline sample obtained after annealing of a fragment of the sample from Ytterby at 1373 K in an argon atmosphere. Both fully metamict and crystalline gadolinite show divalent iron exclusively in octahedral coordination. Changes of the amplitudes ratio of high energy to low energy absorption peaks from Fe2+ quadrupole doublets are strictly correlated with calculated absorbed alpha-dose and the metamictization stages of the gadolinite specimens. In this respect, one of the samples is in conflict with the estimated radiation dose based on age and radionuclide concentrations. In this case, Mössbauer spectroscopy shows that the sample had to be naturally annealed over geologic time.

Non-destructive Mössbauer spectra (MS) of a series of nine Mexican iron meteorites belonging to the collection of the Instituto de Geología of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (IG-UNAM) were obtained by 90º γ-ray scattering. We divided the set of nine meteorites in two groups: The first group shows complex spectra of iron oxides mixed with a paramagnetic phase; their spectra and Mössbauer parameters have noticeable differences. The spectra of the second group are quite similar and characteristic of Fe-Ni alloys.
