The palynology of the Cambrian claystones and mudstones of the Góry Pieprzowe Shale Formation in the southern part of the Łysogóry region (Holy Cross Mts., Poland) are described. These deposits had been referred to the Middle Cambrian of the Paradoxides paradoxissimus and Paradoxides forchhammeri Superzones. Here, rocks from 10 shallow drillings and several exposures in the Opatów region have been examined. Scarce and poorly preserved acritarch assemblages contain several forms that are indicative for the Upper Cambrian, while the genera Acanthodiacrodium, Cymatiogalea, Stelliferidium, Trunculumarium, Nellia, Impluviculus, Calyxiella, and Veryhachium excludes the possibility of a Middle Cambrian age. Rather, these forms suggest the Upper Cambrian, most probably its middle and upper part. The occurrence of the rocks of this age to both north and south of the Łysogóry quartzite outcrops indicates tectonic repetition of the geological structure in the Main Range of the Holy Cross Mountains.The dark colours of palynoflora from the Pieprzowe Mountains in Sandomierz are identical with the colours of the Cambrian microflora from the Łysogóry region, and differ from the bright colours characterising organic matter in the Kielce region of the Holy Cross Mountains. This suggests a tectonic relation of the Pieprzowe Mountains with the Łysogóry region rather than with the Kielce region, as hitherto thought.

In the village of Pobroszyn near Opatów, a faulted section of Ordovician deposits represented by upper Tremadoc clayey-silty lithofacies, upper Arenig carbonate-phosphorite lithofacies and Upper Ordovician claystones with limestone interbeds, were identified. The upper Tremadoc is dated on basis of acritarch. This is the first time that upper Tremadoc deposits have been documented in the Łysogóry region. The late Arenig transgressive deposits were probably preceded by emergence in the latest Tremadoc and early Arenig. The Ordovician rocks from Pobroszyn are intensely tectonised. Two groups of faults, oblique and longitudinal, are distinguished. The first one strikes from 120-140°, and dip to NE at 40-45°, and the second one that strikes 15-25° and dips 65-80° to E.

The paper presents a new interpretation of the geological structure and stratigraphy of the Devonian in the Świętomarz–Śniadka section. The uppermost Śniadka Formation (equivalent to the Nieczulice Formation), was described previously from the northern part of the section between exposures of the sandstones and shales of the Świętomarz Formation. The present study revealed the presence in the mentioned area of Sitka Coral-Crinoid Limestone Member and the Sierżawy Member, referable to the Skały Formation. Black, thin-bedded limestones, occurring here, were assigned to the upper part of the Sierżawy Member. Conodont assemblages indicate that the Sitka Coral-Crinoid Limestone Member corresponds to the hemiansatus Zone, whereas most of the Sierżawy Member represents the timorensis – rhenanus/varcus zones. The presence of the North American species Icriodus janaea is documented for the first time in Poland. Clay shales and marls with Maenioceras terebratum are considered to be the uppermost part of the Sierżawy Member. These stratigraphic data are the basis for a new interpretation of the geological structure of the Bodzentyn Syncline.

Near Milejowice and Janowice in the eastern part of the Łysogóry Unit of the Holy Cross Mts., Poland, a SW-NE trending diabase has been identified intruding Lower Palaeozoic strata. This intrusion causes amagnetic anomaly, with delta T values of 48-112 gamma. It is orientated perpendicular to the regional strike. Boreholes encountered one to three component dykes 2.0 to more than 10.0 m thick inclined at 75-90 degrees Celsius, generally towards the east. They are hydrothermally altered and affected by surface weathering. The intrusion is located along two independent transverse faults, "skipping" from one to another irrespective of their strike. The intrusive zone is strongly tectonically disturbed, S-curved and disrupted by faults into segments and sub-segments. Most of the diabases are slicken-sided, and locally cataclased and mylonitized. The Milejowice-Janowice diabases probably formed in the Early Devonian, i.e. late Lochkovian-early Pragian, as post-tectonic igneous rocks belonging to within-plate, continental basalts according to Krzemiński (2004). Their origin may be referred tomagmatism triggered by the extension of the Baltica passivemargin during the final Late Silurian-Early Devonian phase of its collision with eastern Avalonia. A complex and at least two-phase development ofmagmatism in the Holy Cross Mts. is envisaged.

The well-known fossiliferous and lithologically variable clay-carbonate series in the Łysogóry Region (northern part of the Holy Cross Mts, central Poland), enclosed between the Middle Devonian Amphipora dolomites and limestones (Kowala Formation) and siliciclastics (Świętomarz Beds), is defined formally as the Shaly-Calcareous Skały Formation. This Upper Eifelian to Middle Givetian, ca. 250–280 m thick unit, consists of marly and clay shales, interbedded many times with various limestone types (including encrinite and biohermal varieties), as well as with marls and siltstones. Its diagnostic feature is the presence of variable skeletal accumulations, formed by exceptionally numerous, well-preserved and diverse macrofauna (including brachiopods, corals, crinoids, bryozoans), described since the 19th century. The stratotype is located in the eastern slope of the Dobruchna stream near the Skały village and belongs to the Silurian to Upper Devonian Grzegorzowice-Skały section. Compared to the previously used term, Skały Beds sensu Pajchlowa (1957), the lower boundary is redefined, owing to a new exposure in the active Skała Quarry, and placed higher, at the base of the famous brachiopod shales (set XIV of Pajchlowa), instead of the formerly accepted lower boundary at the base of set XIII. Set XIV is formally distinguished as the Dobruchna Brachiopod Shale Member. The higher part of the Skały Fm (sets XV–XXVA) is not subdivided further, as the poorly exposed succession, including in particular the type area, precludes a more accurate recognition of lithological variability. The upper boundary of the Skały Fm is placed at the top of set XXV sensu Pajchlowa (1957), corresponding to the boundary between subsets XXVA and XXVB sensu Malec and Turnau (1997). A hypostratotype of the upper boundary is selected in the outcrop M0 at Miłoszów, 2.5 km westwards from the type section, allowing recognition of the diachroneity of lithological change defining the transition from the Skały Fm to Świętomarz Beds. A borehole situated in a key location would be an obvious next step in the further elucidation of the stratigraphic sequence of the Łysogóry Region.

The Pepper Mts. Shale Formation, consisting of: clayey shales, mudstones and sandstones, as one of the oldest unit of the Holy Cross Mts., was subjected to mineralogical and petrographical studies. In order to reconstruct the geological history of the succession, mineral assemblages were characterized from the genetic point of view. Pyrite and goethite taking a form of bacterial-cell pseudomorphoses, crystallized during sedimentation and/or diagenesis, while quartz, kaolinite, goethite and chlorite prove subsequent alteration due to the hydrothermal fluid circulation. Secondary sulphates occurring on the pyrite-bearing rock outcrops mark the way of weathering processes. According to the presented results, Cambrian sediments were affected by hot fluids, which caused mineral recomposition and maturing of organic matter. Under the hypergenic conditions sulphate crust precipitate with pickeringite [MgAl 2 (SO 4 ) 4 ∙ 22H 2 O], as a dominant phase accompanied by alunogen [A l 2 (SO 4 ) 3 ∙ 17H 2 O] and small amount of epsomite [MgSO 4 ∙ 7H 2 O].

Opis:
The Holy Cross Mountains Fold Belt, the Odrzywół–Ćmielów Graben, the Radom-Kraoenik Horst and the Mazovia-Lublin Graben are located in the contact zone between the Paleozoic Platform and the East European Craton, eastwards of the Variscan foreland basin. The Holy Cross Mountains Fold Belt consists of the Kielce and the Łysogóry Fold Zones. The boundary between the Kielce and Łysogóry Fold Zones is formed by the Holy Cross Fault. Southwestern border of the Kielce Fold Zone is probably consistent with the extent of the folds in the Małopolska Block. The Łysogóry Fold Zone is probably bordered from northeast by the Skrzynno Fault, which is also a boundary of the Radom-Kraoenik Horst from the southwest. The Radom-Kraoenik and the Mazovia-Lublin Graben are separated by the Kazimierz-Ursynów Fault. Northeastern border of the graben is the Kock Fault.

The study was conducted in the year 2010 in the Łysogóry Mts. in Świętokrzyski National Park. Spring water samples were collected in three rounds. The first round was carried out after the period of snowmelt (March/ April 2010), the second – after intensive rainfall (May 2010) and the third – when water levels were low (July 2010). The data set attained concerned conductivity, water pH, and also concentrations of the foremost anions (Cl-, NO3 -, SO4 2-) and cations (NH4 +, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Mg2+). Spring water quality was assessed in line with Polish policy on groundwater (Regulation of the Minister of Environment of 23 July 2008, The results confirmed that spring water quality strongly depended on wet acid deposition and the geological structure. Tree species (fir and beech), exposition and soil types within the alimentation area did not influence water chemistry. Spring water were found in low quality classes according to Polish standards due to low water pH as well as high NO3 - and NH4 + concentration.
