Opis:
In this essay I want to focus on Jean-François Lyotard’s interpretation of Marcel Duchamp’s “The Large Glass” which I confront with Duchamp’s idea of pictorial nominalism. I invoke the main thesis from Lyotard’s important essay “Freud selon Cézanne,” to draw a line between Lyotard’s analysis of artistic experience of space in Cézanne’s work and the topological conceptuality traced by Lyotard in spatial relations within Duchamp’s “The Large Glass.” I want to show that the concept of “transformation” that is introduced in Lyotard’s interpretation of Duchamp’s works, operates within certain spatial analysis which lays the foundations for philosophical analysis in situ, or, as Lyotard writes, “topological politics.” For Lyotard this is the exact context to proceed the meditation of transformational potential hidden within the idea of presentation and representation of the space that becomes visible when one starts to notice incongruences as well as congruences.

Violence works at the same time as what we find in the world according to our best description of reality, and as what we fight and reject, hoping for a more peaceful world. It may also be what we recommend, as the only way to change things, or even what we celebrate, as the key resource of true art. Sometimes we even think that adequate theory arises from violence against given paradigms. How can it be so? Do we really understand what we refer to when we speak about violence?

Opis:
Postmodernism is, in many respects, a term that has lost most of its cultural and academic cachet. This does not, however, mean that the themes, context, and conditions to which it referred are no longer relevant. In this essay, I will briefly review the latest reports which show a decreasing interest in organized religion, and interpret these results as symptomatic of a larger change in the state of knowledge. To this end, I will examine Jean‑François Lyotard’s analysis of the loss of metanarratives as a way of understanding the implicit rules of the dialogue that occurs between the theist and the atheist or agnostic. Next, I will note the unique capacity of beauty to transcend the diverse language games played by both sides of the conversation. I will conclude by contending that this characteristic of beauty offers a kind of common ground which can be built upon, fostering further dialogue as well as an opportunity for evangelization.

When John Paul II in the Encyclical „Fides et Ratio” wrote that „the tho-ught streams that refer to postmodernism deserve attention’ (point 91), this bro-ught about a lot of confusion among many philosophers. The nineties of the last century were marked by an intense confrontation of the widely understood Chri-stian philosophy with postmodernism. In postmodernism the destructive nihilism was perceived, and in many polemics more o{en warned than encouraged to reflect on this philosophical stream. It has been some time since postmodernism was contentiously discussed and the term itself has ceased to evoke such strong emotions. The question worth arising is: whether philosophizing in the spirit of postmodernism must really ine-vitably lead to the rejection of religion as such?

Opis:
The author refers to an article by J.-F. Lyotard A few words to sing in which the philo-sopher tries to analyze Sequenza III by Luciano Berio, a piece performed by Cathy Berberian. A few words to sing is an example of Lyotard’s dealing with musical topics situated “on the bor-derline”. In this particular case, the author suggests that the analysis in question lies in perfect agreement with Lyotard’s categories of figure and giving voice to the victim disallowed to speak, as opposed to the (purely) aesthetic, thus enforcing the demand of “resisting the aesthetic”. Lyotard’s musical interests, although perhaps not so evident as his passion with the image, also indicate quite clearly his specific (anti-)aesthetics. While listening to Sequenza III, Lyotard discovers the decon-structed discourses that Berio planted in his musical work. Their interrelations, as well as our own expectations towards the piece — as Lyotard believed — all provide a significant context for the interpretation of Sequenza III, the interpretation which may still give rise to revolution, if only the total critical potential of the work is duly used.

Opis:
In liberal societies it seems to be important to provide orientation by philosophizing at school. We are used to doing this by discussing classic ethics with our students. Here, skills like rational argumentation can be trained. It is the universal rationality that can be applied to different ethical issues and, thus, provide orientation. When it comes to this learning objective phenomenology and postmodernism are mostly not expected to provide assistance. Phenomenology might be seen as just dealing with perception whereas postmodernism is under suspicion for contributing to indecision, arbitrariness and relativism. In this article I will try to outline the potentials of phenomenology and postmodernism in the field of orientation. In the tradition of Husserl’s ‘epoché’ we can let students discover the perspective of a first person and what it means to be a ‘self’. Heidegger and Merleau-Ponty have not only described a certain closeness to the world which can be described as ‘dwelling’ of a lived body. They have also delineated elements of a new ‘postmetaphysical’ and at the same time ‘prehermeneutical’ metaphysics. All this can help to open the depth of self, life, and world. Postmodern thinkers claim a plurality of truths. By this means, these theories can encourage self-empowerment. At the same time, authors like Lévinas (responsibility for the other), Lyotard (the sublime), and Rorty (solidarity) describe new ways of openness towards the world which are not founded by any primal truth and thus provide orientation.

Opis:
The article discusses Jean-François Lyotard’s conception of modernist-postmodernist shift and its dynamics in the light of Lyotard’s studies concerning the energetic, libidinal potential of art and artistic structure (or apparatus, dispositive). According to Lyotard, the postmodern would constitute a continuous “quasi-analytical” process of exploration of the elements “repressed” by the modernist project in a struggle to gain freedom from the mechanism of repetition. Only in such context will we be able to draw some serious artistic consequences from his analysis of the cultural and philosophical changes. The second part of the article focuses on Lyotard’s book The Assasination of Experience by Painting, Monory devoted to the French hyperrealist painter Jacques Monory with whom Lyotard collaborated in the late 1970s. The book was described by Lyotard as the ”contribution of the paintings of Jacques Monory to the understanding of the libidinal set-up, and vice versa”.
W artykule została przedstawiona koncepcja autorstwa Jean-Françoisa Lyotarda dotycząca przełomu modernistyczno-postmodernistycznego w kontekście studiów Lyotarda nad energetycznym, libidinalnym potencjałem sztuki i struktury artystycznej (bądź arystycznego urządzenia, dispositive). Lyotard w książce The Assasination of Experience by Painting, Monory opisał “wkład dzieł malarskich Jacques’a Monory w rozumienie urządzeń libidinalnych i vice versa”.

Opis:
The article expands and modifies the contexts in which literary onomastics currently operates. This strictly interdisciplinary field of research, primarily originating from linguistics, has sought out the contexts that triggered non-obvious meanings of names readable in the artistic work from the outset. The references were varied – stylistics, textology, philosophy, structural poetics. All of them significantly enriched onomastic nalyses, leaving some fundamental sense of insufficiency at the same time. That is the reason why we propose the project of the connection between literary onomastics and — now extremely extensive — theoretical thought. The article is not the end of this discussion, but rather an exploratory study and the beginning of scientific research. Consequently, there is no one ordering and chronological concept with a clear conclusion, but the main aim is to show the analysis of the claims relevant for further research. Therefore, several concepts of theoreticians interested in proper names in literature were discussed (far from a common phenomenon in this case). From the research projects analyzed, including among others: U. Eco, J.F. Lyo tard, P. de Man, there emerges a clear conviction of the need to end the search for a referential, texted name. In this place it refers, on the one hand, to itself, establishing its own unreal meaning (image-forming, phonic, intertextual); on the other, it concerns the author’s system of naming (and beyond), which is also an epistemological concept. The starting point of these diagnoses was the thoroughly interpreted self-analysis of artistic works made by Marcel Proust; for further analysis, the thesis of Walter Benn Michaels was also employed, which brings interest in proper names from literature to the domain of artistic experiences. The conducted analysis (designing future literary onomastic research) leads to the final conclusion that the proper name indicates the essence itself, the arche of our existence.

Opis:
The Italian artist Giovanni Anselmo (b. Borgofranco d’Ivrea, 1934) was a member of Arte Povera group, which was put together by Germano Celant back in 1967. Anselmo has addressed the invisible in art since the beginning of his activity, mainly with projections ofwords that play with the idea of the visible and the invisible, with the true (or multiple) meanings of language, and with the very nature of art. He refers to universal and eternal concepts and opposite pairs, such as the visible and the invisible, the finite and the infinite, the close and the open, the clear and the blurred, the being and the non-being. In the works discussed in the paper, the intangible element of the light beam is made visible only through the projection. It is always the projection of something immaterial on something material, an entity that participates in the dimension of non-being that is projected onto the world of being.
