    The press belongs to one of the most important tools of propaganda influence on society. It was often used to conduct open wars aimed at promoting specific political views or reasons. For this reason, it can be concluded that the press release has also always had a significant impact on the security of the state. The purpose of this article is to illustrate Polish‑Ukrainian relations, presented in the pages of the most important Polish‑language newspapers of Lviv in the second half of 1930, during the sabotage of Ukrainian nationalists in Eastern Lesser Poland and the repressive action conducted by the Polish authorities in consequence. The most widely read Polish newspapers in Lviv were selected for the purposes of the article. In order to show the whole of the discussed issue, archival sources and publications were also used.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie „Gazety Literackiej. Najtańszego pisma w Galicji”, efemerydy lwowskiej ukazującej się w 1871 roku, w szerszym kontekście ruchu wydawniczego Lwowa okresu autonomii galicyjskiej oraz omówienie jego struktury tematycznej i rodzajowej. Zaprezentowane zostały również wyniki analizy szaty graficznej oraz ilustracji obecnych w „Gazecie Literackiej”. Materiałem badawczym było 9 kolejnych numerów czasopisma udostępnionych w formie zdigitalizowanej w Jagiellońskiej Bibliotece Cyfrowej. Opracowanie uzupełniają notki biograficzne osób publikujących w gazecie. „Gazeta Literacka” stanowi interesujące źródło do studiów nad historią prasy ukazującej się we Lwowie w XIX wieku, zwłaszcza z punktu widzenia wzajemnego oddziaływania i uzupełniania się treści polityczno-społecznych i kulturalno-literackich opublikowanych na łamach ogólnodostępnej prasy.
    The paper aims to present “Gazeta Literacka. Najtańsze pismo w Galicji” (Literary Gazette. The Cheapest Newspaper in Galicia), a Lviv ephemeral newspaper from 1871, in a broader context of the publishing movement of Lviv in the period of Galician autonomy and to discuss its thematic and genre structures. The layout and illustrations included in “Gazeta Literacka” are analyzed as well. The study bases on 9 consecutive issues made available in a digitalized form in the Jagiellonian Digital Library and is supplemented by biographical notes of authors who published in the newspaper. “Gazeta Literacka” constitutes a fascinating source for exploring the history of the Lviv press in the 19th century, particularly from the point of view of mutual influence and complementarity of its political, social, cultural, and literary content.

    The article reconstructs Polish information and propaganda campaigns in Western Europe in the run-up to the Great War. Those initiatives allowed the issues related to the Polish question, especially the persecution of Poles under the Prussian and Russian partitions, to be brought to public attention in the West. The authors trace the process of disseminating information to the intellectual communities of Paris, Rome and London based on participant accounts, reports, propaganda pamphlets, the press from the period and secondary literature. They conclude that propaganda campaigns reached a relatively narrow group of intellectuals, writers, members of the artistic community, journalists, and to a lesser extent, parliamentarians. Although the information campaign could not immediately alter the previously established stereotypes, its specific effects could be observed during the Great War and at the Paris Peace Conference.

    The paper discusses occurrences of Lviv themes in Polish opinion-forming newspapers in exile in the United States after World War II. The author followed various publications of the „New Diary” in the years 1971–1999 and its appendices: „Polish Week” (1971–1981) and „Polish Review” (1981–1999) issued in New York. Analysis of the newspapers’ contents revealed that a small and dispersed Lviv community, centred on the Lviv Circle, which emigrated to the United States, had regularly published their works in the pages of the „New Diary”. However, compared with the incidence of the same themes in the Polish émigré press in Western Europe, it was a marginal phenomenon. The main topic areas were the unmasking of Soviet authorities’ actions aimed at eliminating traces of Polish culture in Lviv, the devastation of the Lviv Eaglets Cemetery, pictures of the Poltava, poems devoted to the city and anniversary reminiscences of the Lviv defence in 1918. Lviv topics abroad were mostly the domain of those former citizens who had been forced to leave the city, without the possibility of return (owing to the provisions of the Yalta agreement) – journalists, academics, activists in exile regularly associated with the magazines from the British Isles: the „White Eagle”, „News”, „Polish Diary and Soldier’s Diary”, as well as „Culture” from Paris.
