    The paper Cities of Lovecraft traverses a number H. P. Lovecraft’s works in order to outline the cityscape of the titanic and the monstruous—that is shown as an epitomy of Lovecraft’s depiction of the gothic city. Spaces forgotten, hidden, concealed and, thereby, treacherous and weird, compose a pivotal component of creating both the world and the atmosphere of gothic fiction—as they realise a bipartite model of the world divided into the known and the unknown. Lovecraftian worlds are claimed here to be contructed in this very way, featuring forgotten, titanic cities of architecture never seen and origin—unbeknownst to any of the protagonists. Alongside those titanic (sunken, undiscovered, otherworldy) or isolated (such as Innsmouth) metropolies those of human origin reside, no less, however, affected by the evil and unnatural phenomena instigating—both on topographical and psychological plane—deformations and abnormalities. Those liminal enclaves  of decay signify the entering of the forbidden frontier and stepping over the threshold of “normality”—which results in character’s wondering astray in the secret or degenerated urban mazes, overwhelmed by their grandeur.  Theis scenery becomes, therefore, a key element for (re)presenting a world tainted by the Ancient Evil—surving, in a way, as a fellow character in the narrative.

    In his tale entitled The Nameless City, Howard Phillips Lovecraft includes unspecified «paragraphs from the apocryphal nightmares of Damascius» among the «fragments» of the «cherished treasury of daemoniac lore» of the protagonist In the present essay, I suggest that there is a connection between this unusual reference and a note in the writer’s Commonplace Book, which refers to the notice by Photius (Bibl. cod. 130) on a lost work by Damascius that nowdays is generally referred to as Paradoxa and assumed to consist of a variegated collection of extraordinary stories and facts. I, therefore, delineate a general presentation of the testimony by the Byzantine Patriarch (very probably only indirectly known to Lovecraft), upon which I attempt to bring into focus the motivations that led the Providence to make the writer insert the name of Damascius in the fantastic plot of his story.

    The article is a comparative reading and analysis of selected works by two eminent authors of weird fiction, Stefan Grabiński and Howard Phillips Lovecraft, the goal of which is to trace two (independent) trajectories of development of ideas concerning “weird” story writing, as established, in pre-modern context, by Edgar Allan Poe. The two authors appear to suffer from a combination of tragically inherent inability to write “like” Poe, with a haunting desireto do so. Exhibiting understanding of the Poesque discourse, they are driven to invent strategies to cope with the resulting textual neuroses-a way out of the discursive “maze” of Poe’s craft, a way that is always already shut.Where Lovecraft’s “mechanistic materialism” finds its expression in an indifferent cosmos, populated by alien beings, whose influence seems to be inscribed in the fabric of his textual realities, Grabiński’s sense of “amazement” is deployed internally, with psychological constructs overshadowing the “objective” reality. Both discourses, however, spring from one tradition of horror, and from the unexorcised trace of Poe’s spectre. The two authors’ ambivalent relation with modern sensibilities results in a series of obsessive investigationsinto the ideological underpinnings of art, philosophy and science.

    The article analyzes Howard Phillips Lovecraft’s short story The Music of Erich Zann, with a view to presenting the conflict between modernity and nature in Lovecraft’s works. The text in question, along with supplementary texts, provides information that allows us to reformulate the perception of Lovecraft’s works, or more precisely, the category of “supernatural horror.”

    How does the contemporary Polish weird fiction scare us?The text concerns different strategies of constructing weird fiction by contemporary Polish writers. In two anthologies published in 2013, authors of weird novels reinterpret the classic paradigm of weird fiction (associated with Lovecraft) as well as try to refer it to the present reality. Polish writers, inspired mainly by Stefan Grabiński’s work, use his best known motives, such as weird trains and desolate stations. The second source of inspiration is Poe’s dead subject (from The Facts in the Case of M. Waldemar), who acts as a living one and generates the horror. These inspirations, however, do not help contemporary writers with creating a new paradigm of weird fiction but rather close them in the circle of constant inspirations and dependence on their predecessors.

    Artykuł dyskutuje o twórczości Hovarda P. Lovecrafta ujmowanej z punktu widzenia psychologii transpersonalnej Stanislava Grofa. Umiejscowienie dzieł literackich w tej perspektywie pozwala wskazać inspiracje leżące we wspomnieniach okołoporodowych i transpersonalnych sferach psychiki. Lovecraft, tworzący literaturę weird fiction, dawał w niej wyraz podświadomym doświadczeniom związanym z przeżyciami perinatalnymi, stanowiącymi źródło jego mrocznych fascynacji i inspiracji. Teoria Grofa rzuca światło na specyficzne elementy pisarstwa mistrza grozy, pozwalając rozpoznać w nich reminiscencje życia płodowego. Zjawiska towarzyszące poszczególnym etapom procesu narodzin wpłynęły na osobowość pisarza, nadając charakterystyczny rys prozie i poezji jego autorstwa.
    Article discusses the work of Hovard P. Lovecraft grasped from the point of view of Stanislav Grof ’s transpersonal psychology. The location of the literary works in this perspective lets us specify the inspiration lying in the perinatal memories and transpersonal realms of the psyche. Lovecraft, creating weird fiction literature, encapsulated in it an expression of subconscious experiences related to the perinatal experiences, constituting the source of his dark fascination and inspiration. Grof ’s theory sheds light on the specific elements of writing of a master of horror, allowing to recognize in it the reminiscences of fetal life. Phenomena accompanying the different stages of the birth process influenced the personality of the writer, giving a distinctive feature of his prose and poetry.

    Pośmiertna erupcja sławy H.P. Lovecrafta wywołała szereg procesów transformatywnych w jednolitej niegdyś wizji pisarza. Ów rozwój sytuacji doprowadził do fragmentacji wstępnego asortymentu koncepcji przedstawionych przez twórcę mitologii, ale stworzył także garstkę oryginalnych interpretacji klasycznego materiału. Niniejsza praca bada specyficzną naturę lovecraftiańskiego horroru (jak również naturę ogólnie rozumianego horroru w literaturze) oraz trudności powstające przy jej implementacji pomiędzy mediami. Analiza ta skupia się głównie na próbach z dziedziny kinematografii, zgłębiając niektóre z bardziej osobliwych adaptacji filmowych mitologii Cthulhu, rozpatrując ich wierność względem materiału źródłowego, potencjał wywoływania strachu oraz znaczące aspekty posthumanistyczne. Esej kończy się zastosowaniem powyższych informacji celem określenia obecnego stanu dziwnej fikcji.
    Lovecraft’s posthumous eruption of fame brought about a series of transformative processes in the writer’s once wholesome vision. Such a development essentially led to the fragmentation of the initial assortment of ideas provided by the creator of the mythos, but it also spawned a handful of original interpretations of the classic material. This paper examines the specific nature of Lovecraftian horror (as well as literary horror in general) and the difficulty of its cross-media implementation. The analysis focuses mainly on cinematographic attempts, dissecting some of the more peculiar film adaptations of the Cthulhu mythos and examining their faithfulness to the source material, fear-inducing potential, and prominent posthuman aspects. The essay concludes by utilizing the above information to determine the contemporary state of weird fiction and pondering upon the future prospects of the genre.
