Opis:
The geography of char (the sandy land areas found within the river or lining at the bank) and their fertile lands create a suitable environment for livestock rearing, significantly contributing to livelihood, income, and nutritional intact for the char dwellers. The study investigates how livestock rearing and losses due to diseases and disasters are related to the livelihood and economy of the char-residing people, with a particular concentration on the Mishing char dwellers of Assam. The study considers two districts of Assam having char areas populated by the Mishing population. Both quantitative and qualitative tools are used to achieve the desired goals. Table and box plot figures are used to present the results. It is found that the loss of livestock is a serious threat to the economy of char dwellers. It contributes the most significant portion of their economic loss. It is also found that the severity is higher in case of disease loss of livestock than disaster loss. The study further suggests possible adaptation strategies for reducing livestock loss in the study area.

Opis:
Accurate prediction of power loss distribution within an electrical device is highly desirable as it allows thermal behavior to be evaluated at the early design stage. Three-dimensional (3-D) and two-dimensional (2-D) finite element analysis (FEA) is applied to calculate dc and ac copper losses in the armature winding at high-frequency sinusoidal currents. The main goal of this paper is showing the end-winding effect on copper losses. Copper losses at high frequency are dominated by the skin and proximity effects. A time-varying current has a tendency to concentrate near the surfaces of conductors, and if the frequency is very high, the current is restricted to a very thin layer near the conductor surface. This phenomenon of nonuniform distribution of time-varying currents in conductors is known as the skin effect. The term proximity effect refers to the influence of alternating current in one conductor on the current distribution in another, nearby conductor. To evaluate the ac copper loss within the analyzed machine a simplified approach is adopted using one segment of stator core. To demonstrate an enhanced copper loss due to ac operation, the dc and ac resistances are calculated. The resistances ratio ac to dc is strongly dependent on frequency, temperature, shape of slot and size of slot opening.

Opis:
The goal of the study was to evaluate the effect of a tillage system and plant cover on the intensity of P and K losses due to surface runoff in a six-year research period, taking into account tillage stages and development of the plant cover. A two-factor field experiment was carried out during the six-year research period. The investigated factors included no-tillage system (NT) and conventional tillage system (CT) as well as the cultivated plant: horse bean, spring wheat and winter oilseed rape. The results demonstrated that the content of P and K in the soil was 9.5% higher in the NT system than in the CT system. The NT system showed better soil-protection effectiveness preventing P and K losses from soil. Significant differences between the NT and CT systems were observed in the period without plant cover when soil in the CT system was subjected to tillage treatments, as well as in the period from sowing to 50% cover of soil by plants. It was observed that differences in P losses between the systems were lower in the initial period of the research than in the years that followed, namely the difference in 2008 was 11.6%, in 2009 57.3%, and from 59.5 to 65.4% in the years 2010-2013. Similar results were obtained for K, as the differences between the systems in in K losses were: 25.6% in 2008, 64.1% in 2009, and from 66.0 to 70.9% in the years 2010-2013. The investigated plants can be ranked according to soil-protection properties in the following order, starting from the most effective one: winter rape>spring wheat>horse bean.

In this investigation, we consider Bayesian and Non-Bayesian estimation problems of unknown scale parameter of Gamma distribution assuming the shape parameter as known and derive Bayes and Classical (Non-Bayes) estimators of the scale parameter. Bayes estimators are obtained under symmetric (squared error) and asymmetric (linex and precautionary) loss functions using a non-informative prior. The risk efficiency of Bayes estimators is also obtained under these loss functions. Finally, the simulation study is done to compare the performance of these estimators using MATLAB software.

The article aims at defining and analysing the energy loss coefficients in design solutions of rotating displacement machines, with a piston machine as an example. The energy losses observed in these machines include mechanical loss, volumetric loss, and pressure loss. The scale and relations between these losses in different machines depend on machine design and manufacturing quality, and on operating parameters. The operating parameters, in turn, which affect directly or indirectly the above losses depend on whether the machine works in pump or hydraulic motor regime. The article is also a contribution to the development of a library of ki coefficients which define the losses in displacement machines, as the knowledge about these coefficients makes it possible to assess fast and easily the energy efficiency of a machine or drive system at each point of its working area.

Opis:
Performing social roles, including family-related ones, by people with visual impairment is associated with experiencing various types of difficulties It is basically a consequence of the socially established negative image of these people who areperceived as not fully competent and requiring assistance. Previous few studies devoted to the motherhood of blind and partially sighted women indicate relatively frequent reactions of their social environment expressing the belief that a visually impaired woman is not able to perform her role as a wife and mother in a proper way. The psychosocial situation of fathers with visual impairment is rarely analysed in research activities, and knowledge of the relationship between gradual loss of vision and experience of fatherhood is relatively poor. The aim of the article is to present the results of a qualitative study focused on learning the subjective experience of performing the role of a parent by a man with progressive vision loss. In the biographical study of an individual case, the narrative interview technique was used, and the analysis of the collected material was referred to such spheres of experiencing fatherhood as: the concept of role, sources of satisfaction and positive experience related to the role, perceived relationships between the way of performing the role and progressive impairment.

Opis:
High distribution system power-losses are predominantly due to lack of investments in R&D for improving the efficiency of the system and improper planning during installation. Outcomes of this are un-designed extensions of the distributing power lines, the burden on the system components like transformers and overhead (OH) lines/conductors and deficient reactive power supply leading to drop in a system voltage. Distributed generation affects the line power flow and voltage levels on the system equipment. These impacts of distributed generation (DG) may be to improve system efficiency or reduce it depending on the operating environment/conditions of the distribution system and allocation of capacitors. For this purpose, allocating of distributed generation optimally for a given radial distribution system can be useful for the system outlining and improve efficiency. In this paper, a new method is used for optimally allocating the DG units in the radial distribution system to curtail distribution system losses and improve voltage profile. Also, the variation in active power load in the system is considered for effective utilization of DG units. To evidence the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, computer simulations are carried out in MATLAB software on the IEEE-33 bus system and Vastare practical 116 bus system.

Opis:
Induction motors (IMs) experience power losses when a portion of the input power is converted to heat instead of driving the load. The combined effect of copper losses, core losses, and mechanical losses results in IM power losses. Unfortunately, the core losses in the motor, which have a considerable impact on its energy efficiency, are not taken into account by the generally employed dynamic model in the majority of the studies. Due to this, the motor rating often corresponds to the worst-case load in applications, but the motor frequently operates below rated conditions. A hybridized model reference adaptive system (MRAS) with sliding mode control (SMC) is used in this study for sensorless speed control of an induction motor with core loss, allowing the motor to operate under a variety of load conditions. As a result, the machine can run at maximum efficiency while carrying its rated load. By adjusting the -axis current in the reference frame in vector-controlled drives, the system’s performance is enhanced by running the motor at its optimum flux. Regarding the torque and speed of both induction motors with and without core loss, the Adaptive Observer Sliding Mode Control (AOSMC) has been constructed and simulated in this case. The AOSMC with core loss produced good performance when the proposed controller was tested.

The aim of the article is to present the subjective perspective of a person with congenital low vision who experienced gradual vision deterioration up to total loss. The case study method was used, in which the narrative biographic interview was the main technique of collecting data. In the analysed narratives, certain milestones were identified in the process of coping with the consequences of progressive impairment. Those were the situations when the subject was no longer able to perform a specific task, which she had earlier performed under visual control. They made the subject realise the progressive nature of the disease and inevitably confronted her with the acquisition of permanent severe impairment. Those situations caused temporary disruption of her psychological balance and increased her demand for emotional support. With time, however, they also motivated the subject to use previously rejected rehabilitation devices and techniques. Lack of knowledge of functional implications of eye conditions (including reduced acuity and contrast sensitivity, field defects, light/dark adaptation problems, etc.) among family members and other people hindered the process of providing optimal instrumental support to the subject.

Analysis of genetic relatedness and inbreeding in Polish population of the Newfoundland dog breed. The aim of the study was to analyse the fi ve-generation pedigrees of Newfoundland dogs, registered in the Polish Kennel Club and shown in 2015 in Poland. Pedigrees come from the Polish Newfoundland Club website and their analysis was possible with the use of the international pedigree database (https:// www.newfoundlanddog-database.net/). Inbreeding coeffi cient (COI) and ancestor loss coeffi cient (AVK) were calculated and pedigrees were analysed for the presence of common ancestor. Results indicate low mean COI values, with individual values ranging from 0.78% to 7.03%. The mean kinship was 3.14. Five-generation pedigree analysis did not show high inbreeding in the population studied and AVK exceeded the suggested value of 85% only in one case. It can be thus concluded that the population of Polish Newfoundlands, at least its part, presented at shows in 2015 and most likely intended for breeding, is not to be considered inbred.
