Lolium perenne
Opis:
This article reviews the selected problems concerning the taxonomy, karyology, origin, and distribution of the genus Lolium, and especially of L. perenne. The genus consists of eight diploid (2n = 14) species. Four are cross-pollinated (e.g. L. perenne, L. multiflorum), and four are self-pollinated (e.g. L. temulentum, L. remotum). From the taxonomical point of view the first group is often classified as the section Lolium and the second as the section Craepalia. They all originate from the Mediterranean region, most of them are widely distributed in Eurasia and introduced in Africa, Americas, and Australia. In Poland occur: L. perenne, L. multiflorum, L. temulentum, L. rigidum as well as L. remotum and L. subulatum, which occurrence seems to be doubtful. L. perenne is morphologically differentiated and sometimes it is divided (on the basis of inflorescence characters) into several infraspecific taxa, usually varieties. It cross easily with L. multiforum, L. rigidum, other species of the genus and even with some representatives of Festuca. This interfertility suggests that there is no barrier to free gene-exchange between them. The species originate probably from the Mediterranean region, however its natural geographical distribution is rather obscure (at present it is impossible to distinguish its natural and synanthropic localities). In Poland it occurs in the whole territory of the country. L. perenne belongs to the apophytes for which we did not succeed in showing the community of origin. Presently, it grows in ruderal, segetal and seminatural communities of the class Molinio-Arrhenatheretea. Undoubtedly, L. perenne together with other species of the genus constitute an important group of grasses of great interest to botanists as well as to plant breeders and agriculturists. For this reason further fundamental and complementary studies should be carried out.

Opis:
The effectiveness of perennial ryegrass plantations, and hence their profitability, depends, to a considerable extent, on the specificity of the reproduced cultivar. The most appropriate strategy for maintaining high seed yields of new grass cultivars, apart from the improvement of their fodder and lawn aspects, is to seek to obtain the highest seed yield calculated per one generative shoot. In order to increase the efficiency of perennial ryegrass seed plantation it is necessary, apart from the improvement of the seeding aspect of a given cultivar by way of breeding work, also to improve technology of their cultivation. This target can be reached by optimization of agrotechnical factors stimulating biological reproductive potentials of cultivars. Results of own studies indicate that there is an optimal state of nitrogen concentration of perennial ryegrass plants in successive growth stages, which guarantees obtaining the highest seed yields on plantations. In the case of ‘Maja’ cultivar, the content of nitrogen in leaf blades at the beginning of vegetation should amount to 47 g kg⁻¹ DM and at the car initiation - 51 g kg⁻¹ DM. in the case of ‘Anna’ the optimal concentration of nitrogen in leaf blades were 54 and 57 g kg⁻¹ DM, respectively. Another very important factor is the determination of the optimal time and method of harvest as they affect the level of losses of the produced seed yield. The optimal time of seed harvest on perennial ryegrass plantations is the drop of sugars in kernels to the level of 5% DM. The increase of yields from seed plantations of Lolium perenne is a strategic matter for Polish grass seed production, which constitutes an important segment of the domestic seed industry.

Opis:
From among different possibilities of Lolium perenne use in green areas, this species is most useful for transferable sod production which can by applied for interior decoration (pavilions, exhibitions) as well as for the decoration of hardened open space in towns (squares, pavements, terraces), also for arranging ornamental lawns in gardens, and for strengthening the surface of slopes and heaps in green areas and side space in road building. The basic species for transferable lawns preparing are: Lolium perenne with the cultivars ‘Gazon’, both creating a strong root system, which is a main condition of compactness indispensable for transportation the sod to the place of its destination.

Opis:
The aim of studies was to evaluate the performance value of domestic cultivars of Lolium perenne on a base of area sodding uniformity under conditions of different number of cuttings during vegetation period. Studies were performed in 1996-2000. Experiments were set on light mineral soil by means of randomized block in four replications. The soil was characterized with neutral reaction (pHKCI 6.9). Contents of available phosphorus, potassium and magnesium forms were: 82, 166 and 52 mg kg⁻¹, respectively. Following cultivars of L. perenne were subjected to studies: ‘Gazon’, ‘Nira’, ‘Niga’, ‘Inka’ and ‘Stadion’. Two variants of cutting frequency were applied in experiments. In the first variant A (intensive), number of cuts depending on study year was 23-26 and mineral fertilization was applied at rates: N - 240, P - 39.2, K - 121.2 kg ha⁻¹. In variant B (extensive), there were 6-10 cuts and mineral fertilization was applied at rates: N - 60, P - 17.5, K - 40 kg ha⁻¹. During vegetation in years of full performance, sodding assessment was done according to 1-9 grade COBORU scale. Study results revealed that sodding of L. perenne cultivars was variable both in years and in particular terms of observation during vegetation period.

Opis:
The research on the content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soil and grass (Lolium perenne L.) was carried out on samples collected in the city of Białystok, in north-eastern Poland. The test samples came from green belts in the vicinity of communication routes, differentiated in terms of the surrounding buildings and infrastructure and characterized by a different car traffic intensity. The highest total concentration of all sixteen PAHs in soil and grass samples was found near a large intersection at Nicholas Copernicus Street, one of the most important communication routes connecting two parts of the city. In the aboveground parts of the studied grass samples, benzo[a]pyrene was the most abundant, its content ranging from 53.8 µg/kg DM up to 91.7 µg/kg DM. On the other hand, in soil samples, much higher benzo[a]pyrene content was found, and the dominance of this compound was observed in almost every measurement location. Based on the obtained results, it was found that car traffic is a significant source of PAH emissions to the urban soil environment and urban greenery. The squares and green belts located along communication routes and intersections are the most exposed to pollution.
