The article is divided into four parts. In Part One the connection between the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist is dealt with. Part Two presents the Liturgy of the Hours as the source and crowning of pastoral work. In Part Three the other reasons inclining the priest to celebrate the Liturgy of the Hours are given. The last part — Part Four is an instruction concerning the salutary fruit resulting from a proper celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. When writing about the connection between the Liturgy of the Hours and the Eucharist the emphasis is put both on the role of the Liturgy of the Hours in preparing the priest to the celebration of the Eucharist, and on enriching the whole day with Eucharistic values. The value of the Liturgy of the Hours for pastoral activity first of all lies in its being the source of the whole of apostolic work. Apart from this, by celebrating the Liturgy of the Hours the priest consolidates his love for Christ and His Church. However, if he wants to gain from the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours, to which he is obliged every day, as much fruit as possible, he should celebrate it not only integrally, but also zealously.

Opis:
King Kazimierz Jagiellończyk and his wife Elizabeth founded a priest college in 1473. Its task was to spread the cult of Lord’s Passion. The college was attached to the Świętokrzyska Chapel at the Wawel Cathedral and his members were obliged to sing daily office of the Holy Cross, and to say a votive mass of the Holy Cross as well. The Chapter Archive of the Cathedral possesses the XVth century manuscript containing the Divine office prayer of the Holy Cross alone which then belonged to the college. In the text we quote the content of the office which was especially drew up for the college’s needs.
Król Kazimierz Jagiellończyk i jego żona Elżbieta założyli w 1773 roku kolegium dla księży. Jego zadaniem było szerzenie kultu Męki Pańskiej. Kolegium przylegało do kaplicy świętokrzyskiej w katedrze wawelskiej i jego członkowie byli zobowiązani do codziennego śpiewania oficjum o świętym krzyżu, jak również do odprawiania wotywnej mszy o świętym krzyżu. Archiwum kapitulne przy katedrze posiada XV-wieczny rękopis zawierający jedynie oficjum o świętym krzyżu, które było specjalnie ułożone na potrzeby tego kolegium i należało do niego. Artykuł podaje tekst tego oficjum.

Following the example of the Lord, who frequently sang hymns with his disciples, and encouraged to sing by St Paul, the early Christians praised God in music and song. The first Latin hymns were composed by Hilary of Poitiers. Their metrical complexity and content discouraged their liturgical use by the Church. Thus, St. Ambrose of Milan is considered the first „official” Latin hymnodist. He composed several hymns, still used in the Liturgy of the Hours, which were musicated by himself. These hymns come from the particular circumstances of the Arian controversy and derive, in the main, from the necessity of encouraging „orthodox” Christians in their defence of the Basilica Porziana in Milan. They were designed to guide their prayer at different times of the day. The Author’s text-critical analysis of two of these hymns – Aeterne rerum conditor, sung at dawn (in gallicinium) and Deus, creator omnium, sung at dusk as the lamps were lit (ad horam incensi) – well testifies to the literary and pastoral genius of the Bishop of Milan as he transforms the complex theological reflection of his time into poetry and music, while not only retaining the integrity of the depth of that reflection but also enhancing its aesthetic profile by drawing on a repertoire of images based on the parallelism of cosmic reality and human reality. St Ambrose’s corpus of hymns, together with his prose works, was admired both by his contemporaries and by successive generations. They promoted the flowering of a merciful Christocentricity which, according to the experts, is the most original and attractive feature of his poetry. As is clearly seen in the hymns received into the Divine Office, Ambrose’s singular ability effectively to stimulate the soul to prayer through a powerful and insuperable lyrical inspiration, is capable literally of transforming the daily hours into songs of praise, and explains Petrarch’s habit of rising during the night to sing hymns to the Lord.

Proclaiming God’s Word is one of the most important tasks of the Church. God’s Word is the gift to the whole Church. It is first of all the presbyters who take part in the forwarding of this Word. Proclamation of God’s Word is the duty and the right stemming from accepted by them sacrament of ordination. Magisterium of the Church, especially Apostolic exhortation Verbum Domini dealing with God’s Word in the life and mission of the Church, talks in several passages about issues connected with proclamation of this Word by presbyters. The papal document gives tips for the priests, relating to preaching sermons, praying with Liturgy of Hours, conducting services based on God’s Word and relating to the value of silence, celebratory proclamation of God’s Word in the church, biblical ministry, the place of God’s Word in religious instructions and priest’s life.
Przepowiadanie słowa Bożego jest jednym z najważniejszych zadań spoczywających na Kościele. Słowo Boże jest darem dla całego Kościoła. W jego przekazie uczestniczą przede wszystkim prezbiterzy. Głoszenie słowa Bożego jest obowiązkiem i uprawnieniem wynikającym z przyjętego przez nich sakramentu święceń. Magisterium Kościoła, a zwłaszcza adhort. apost. Verbum Domini w kilku miejscach podjęła zagadnienie związane z przepowiadaniem tego słowa przez prezbiterów. Papieski dokument przedstawia wskazówki dla kapłanów dotyczące głoszenia homilii, modlitwy Liturgią godzin, przeprowadzania nabożeństw słowa Bożego, odnoszące się do wartości milczenia, uroczystego głoszenia słowa Bożego w świątyni, duszpasterstwa biblijnego, miejsca słowa Bożego w katechezie oraz w życiu kapłana.

The selection of psalms for the Morning and Evening prayer of the Roman Liturgy of the Hours has been profoundly reconsidered on the basis of their clear literary, anthropological and theological criteria. Although both the Morning and the Evening prayers are based on the fundamental cosmic-anthropological symbolism: light and darkness, day and night, their genuine meaning is of theological and paschal nature. The psalms of the Morning prayer express the joy of Church on the threshold of a new day and the veneration of God for his creation of the world and salvation of people. The psalms of the Evening prayer are the song of Church which recognizes the announcement of the rising Jesus Christ in the sign of the declining sun. Thus the basic reference to the selection of the psalms for the Liturgy of the Hours is their full significance – paschal and christological.
Dobór psalmów do jutrzni i nieszporów odnowionej po Soborze Watykańskim II liturgii godzin został dogłębnie przemyślany w oparciu o bardzo jasne kryteria literackie, antropologiczne i teologiczne. Chociaż zarówno nieszpory, jak i jutrznia opierają się na podstawowej symbolice (napięciu) kosmiczno-antropologicznej: światło–ciemności i noc–dzień, to jednak prawdziwe ich znaczenie zawiera wymiar teologiczny i paschalny. Psalmy jutrzni wyrażają radość Kościoła u progu nowego dnia oraz uwielbienie Boga za Jego dzieło stworzenia świata i zbawienia człowieka. Psalmy nieszporów natomiast są pieśnią Kościoła rozpoznającego zapowiedź zmartwychwstania Jezusa Chrystusa w znaku zachodzącego słońca. Podstawowym więc odniesieniem w doborze psalmów do jutrzni i nieszporów jest ich sens pełny – paschalny i chrystologiczny.

The present article justifies the truth that the Liturgy of the Hours is one of the most important Church’s celebrations. This is the prayer of Christ and His people; it is the God’s Son from whom, expressed in human words, the God’s grace follows. Thus, the sanctification of man and the time experienced by him takes place. For the faithful it is also a source of piety and the way to rouse the personal prayer. Those who pray with the words contained in the breviary, continue the redeeming dialogue of the God’s Son with the Heavenly Father and, by unifying with Christ the Mediator – have access to the Father who is in Heaven. This conducted in every period of the day dialogue helps the creatures to trustingly open to the Creator; by remembering that the whole time belongs to Him, they notice His constant presence and they live through every moment of life in such a way – to perfect their own holiness. The topic of the value of the Liturgy of the Hours in the life of the Church is the more necessary to the contemporary Christians, the truer the opinion of the crisis concerning the breviary becomes in their everyday life. More and more often the statements are repeated about the misunderstanding of the prayer’s content, its too difficult a form and un-adaptation to the contemporary style of living. The Church, worried about man’s salvation, devotes much space to the Officium Divinum in its teachings, so that the faithful could develop their spiritual life, see the sense and implement the aim of their lives, enjoy the greater and greater union with God. Thus, they will effectively oppose to the prevailing secularisation.
Artykuł uzasadnia prawdę, że Liturgia Godzin należy do najważniejszych celebracji Kościoła. Jest to modlitwa Chrystusa i Jego ludu; od Syna Bożego płynie bowiem, wyrażona ludzkimi słowami, chwała Boża. W ten sposób dokonuje się uświęcenie człowieka oraz przeżywanego przez niego czasu. Dla wiernych jest to także źródło pobożności i droga ożywiania modlitwy osobistej. Ci, którzy modlą się zawartymi w brewiarzu słowami, kontynuują zbawczy dialog Syna Bożego z Ojcem Niebieskim i, przez jednoczenie się Chrystusem – Pośrednikiem, mają dostęp do Ojca, który jest w niebie. Ten prowadzony we wszystkich porach dnia dialog pomaga stworzeniom ufnie otwierać się na Stwórcę; przypominając sobie o tym, że do Niego należy wszelki czas – dostrzegają Jego nieustanną obecność i tak przeżywają każdą chwilę życia, by doskonalić się w świętości. Temat wartości Liturgii Godzin w życiu Kościoła jest tym bardziej potrzebny współcześnie żyjącym chrześcijanom, im bardziej prawdziwa w ich codziennym życiu staje się opinia o kryzysie, jaki dotyka brewiarz. Coraz częściej powtarzane są zdania o nierozumieniu treści tej modlitwy, jej zbyt trudnej formie czy niedostosowaniu do obecnego stylu życia. Kościół, zatroskany o zbawienie człowieka, w swoim nauczaniu wiele miejsca poświęca Officium Divinum, aby wierni rozwijali swoje życie duchowe, widzieli sens i realizowali cel swojego życia, cieszyli się coraz większym zjednoczeniem z Bogiem. W ten sposób skutecznie przeciwstawiać się będą panującej sekularyzacji.

In 2013, the feast of Jesus Christ the Eternal High Priest was introduced into the liturgical calendar of the Church in Poland. In studying the history and liturgical texts for the new feast, the authors undertook the first attempt of a comprehensive liturgical analysis of its liturgy, presenting its historical background and theology. Starting from describing the circumstances of its introduction, and ending on the presentation of its summary in the „Martyrologium”, the authors paid a special attention to the form of the Mass and, also, tried to take the theological lecture of Mass readings. Then, also the theological conclusions of analytical reading of texts of the Liturgy of the Hours have been presented. The study is the first Polish comprehensive presentation of euchology for the new feast, sometimes it only opens threads for further discussion. However, it clearly shows the fundamental traces of the new feast’s theology. Its central theme is the priesthood of Christ as superior to the priesthood of the Old Testament. The only true priesthood of Christ involves especially, in sacramental way, the ordained ministers. The ministerial priesthood, in fact, becomes the second subject of the feast, as the prayer for priests was the main motivation for introduction of this feast into liturgical calendars of local Churches.
W 2013 r. do kalendarza diecezji polskich zostało wprowadzone święto Jezusa Chrystusa, Najwyższego i Wiecznego Kapłana. W omówieniu historii i tekstów liturgicznych na święto Jezusa Chrystusa, Najwyższego i Wiecznego Kapłana, autorzy podjęli się obszernej analizy liturgicznej, przedstawiając tło historyczne i kontekst teologiczny tekstów liturgicznych nowego święta. Wychodząc od ukazania zarysu historii i okoliczności wprowadzenia święta, a dochodząc do prezentacji Martyrologium, przedstawiają analizę tekstów formularza Mszy świętej, podejmują się pierwszej próby teologicznej lektury czytań mszalnych. Ukazują teologiczne wnioski analitycznej lektury tekstów Liturgii Godzin. Prowadzonym analizom towarzyszą krótkie próby syntezy teologicznej i liturgicznej. Opracowanie jest pierwszą kompletną prezentacją treści euchologicznych nowego święta, niekiedy zatem zaledwie otwiera wątki dyskusyjne, jednakże w sposób jednoznaczny ukazuje podstawowe prawdy teologiczne święta. Centralnym tematem jest kapłaństwo Chrystusa przewyższające kapłaństwo Starego Testamentu. Kapłaństwo Chrystusa jest jedynym prawdziwym kapłaństwem, w którym z kolei na sposób sakramentalny szczególnie uczestniczą szafarze wyświęceni. Kapłaństwo urzędowe się równorzędnym tematem święta, bo właśnie modlitwa za kapłanów stanowi główną motywację wprowadzenia święta do kalendarzy Kościołów lokalnych.

 W przedsoborowym Breviarium Romanum, kantyki, czyli śpiewy, hymny zaczerpnięte ze Starego Testamentu, występowały wyłącznie w jutrzni (laudes). Psalmodia tejże godziny kanonicznej obejmowała cztery psalmy plus kantyk. Kantyk znajdował się zawsze na czwartym miejscu, czyli po trzech kolejnych psalmach następował kantyk, a potem na piątym miejscu ostatni z czterech psalmów. Psalmodia zaś była w układzie jednego tygodnia, natomiast laudes na każdy dzień były podwójne (I laudes oraz II laudes). Artykuł prezentuje problematykę rewizji kantyków Breviarium Romanum, która należała do kompetencji Grupy Studyjnej (Consilium) nr III De psalmis distribuendis.
The former Roman Breviary contained only canticles of the Old Testament (with the excep-tion of the Gospel Canticles), which occurred in a one week in laudes I and laudes II. This article describes several years of editorial work of the Study Group III Consilium, that led to its inclusion in the new book of the Liturgy of the Hours enlarged the amount of canticles of laudes and espe-cially, for the first time, in vespers and some feasts (canticles of the New Testament).

The article presents the editorial work on the role and place of invitarorium and Te Deum in reformed Liturgy of the Hours in the post-conciliar period. It describes discussions and proposed solutions. It indicates different types of argumentation and ways of understanding the meaning of these prayers in the breviary. It allows you to trace the organization of the team responsible for the editorial staff and consultors. It presents the final results of the editing process and justifying of the decisions taken.

Article’s thesis represents a perspective of developments over the centuries in Liturgy of the hours (Liturgia Horarum) in the Nativity of The Blessed Virgin Mary Feast (Festum Nativitatis BVM). The analysis has shown the contemporary secular office in the context of the monastic and tridentine offices and medieval manuscripts (including Hartker Antiphonary). The comparison of the present chanting repertory with the compositions from particular books for Divine office facilitated highlighting relations between the office’s stages as well as determining included authentic gregorian chant.

Z powodu braku kapłanów w wielu diecezjach wierni nie mogą świętować niedziel i świąt kościelnych przez uczestniczenie w te dni w liturgii Mszy św. we własnej wspólnocie. Ze względu na znaczenie niedzieli i Eucharystii dla chrześcijańskiego życia wiernych Stolica Apostolska wydała Directorium de celebrationibus dominicalibus absente presbytero (Dyrektorium o świętowaniu niedzieli bez kapłana). Następnie na jego podstawie liczne Konferencje Biskupów, uwzględniając miejscowe warunki, opracowały nie tylko odpowiednie normy, ale także księgi liturgiczne zawierające celebracje niedzielnej liturgii, którym mogą przewodniczyć diakoni i ustanowieni przez biskupa świeccy liderzy. Konferencja Biskupów USA wydała w języku angielskim i hiszpańskich księgę (Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest. Celebraciones dominicales en ausencia de presbítero), którą posługują się diakoni i świeccy liderzy w czasie niedzielnych i świątecznych celebracji liturgii wtedy, gdy nie ma kapłana. Autor artykułu prezentuje zarówno ogólne wskazania i normy prawne biskupów w tym względzie, uprawnienia proboszcza, diakonów i świeckich oraz formy celebracji liturgicznych bez udziału kapłana. Biskupi USA zlecają w niedziele przede wszystkim celebracje liturgii słowa Bożego oraz części Liturgii Godzin – Jutrznię i Nieszpory, które można łączyć z udzielaniem Komunii św.
For lack of priests the faithful of many dioceses are unable to celebrate Sundays and Church holidays by attending the liturgy of Holy Mass in their own communities on those days. In recognition of the meaning of Sunday and the Eucharist for the Christian faithful, the Apostolic See issued Directorium de celebrationibus dominicalibus absente presbytero (Directory on the celebration of Sunday in the absence of a priest). As a result, numerous episcopal conferences —in consideration of local circumstances—developed not only separate standards but also liturgical books featuring the celebration of the Sunday liturgy in which the leadership of deacons and lay leaders who have been appointed by the bishop is described. The American Episcopal Conference has issued a book entitled Sunday Celebrations in the Absence of a Priest in English and Spanish (Celebraciones dominicales en ausencia de presbitero), used by deacons and lay leaders during Sunday and holiday celebrations of liturgy in the absence of a priest. The article presents both general indications and legal norms of bishops in this respect, the rights of parish priests, deacons and the laity, as well as the form of liturgical celebrations without a priest. American bishops recommend mainly the celebration of the liturgy of the Divine Word and a fragment of the Liturgy of the Hours: Mattins and Vespers, which can involve the administration of the Holy Communion.

The Liturgy of the Hours, in accord with the teaching of the Church, is the prayer of all of the People of God. Everybody participates in accordance with their position in the Church: presbyters as well as all the lay faithful, to the extent they are able. This liturgical prayer of the Church can become the beginning of personal prayer if first the pastors are convinced of the significance of the Liturgy of the Hours in the life of the Church, the parish and in the internal life of the individual lay persons. There is a necessity for the formation of laity in this regard. There is also a need for adequate formation in seminaries as it relates to this matter. It is of great importance to celebrate the patrons of archdioceses, dioceses and parishes together with the Liturgy of the Hours with participation of laity. It is necessary to properly conduct biblical-liturgical catechesis for the lay people. It is of importance to underline the Liturgy of the Hours in the community, the family, the individual, groups and organizations.
Liturgia Godzin według nauczania Kościoła jest modlitwą całego Ludu Bożego. Każdy bierze w niej udział, zgodnie z miejscem w Kościele: prezbiterzy, jak i wszyscy wierni świeccy – według możliwości. Modlitwa liturgiczna Kościoła może stać się zaczynem modlitwy osobistej, jeśli najpierw sami duszpasterze będą przekonani o jej doniosłości w życiu Kościoła, parafii i w życiu wewnętrznym poszczególnych świeckich. Konieczna jest odpowiednia formacja katolików świeckich w tym względzie. Również formacja seminaryjna w tym zakresie powinna kształcić wśród przyszłych kapłanów właściwe postawy. Bardzo ważne są obchody ku czci patronów metropolii, diecezji, parafii z połączeniem celebracji Liturgii Godzin (z włączeniem w nią ludzi świeckich). Rolę kluczową w recepcji tej modlitwy wśród świeckich odgrywa permanentna katecheza biblijno-liturgiczna. Jedną z dróg rozpowszechniania Ducha Liturgii Godzin jest przeżywanie tej formy modlitwy, jak i dojrzewanie do niej w małych grupach i stowarzyszeniach, które swoją praktyką „popularyzują” modlitwy psalmami.
