Opis:
In March 1962, Paweł Jasienica, known chiefly for his books on the history of Poland, published an article entitled ‘Polska anarchia’ (‘Polish anarchy’). The article, which appeared in the weekly Przegląd Kulturalny, sparked off a heated debate on the sources of the anarchy into which the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth began to descend in the latter half of the seventeenth century. Among those who contributed to the debate were some of the leading historians of the day. Encouraged by the response to his article, Jasienica decided to expand it into a full-length book (completed in the spring of 1963). The author first presents the views expounded in the article from Przegląd Kulturalny, and then he reconstructs the debate and examines how Jasienica referred to it in his work on the anarchy. Since Jasienica’s account of the anarchy covers the period with which he was also concerned in Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów (published in English as The Commonwealth of Both Nations) - the third part of his series on the history of Poland for which he is most acclaimed - the author also attempts to compare the interpretations advanced in one work with those advanced in the other. As regards the anarchy, Jasienica traced its origin back to the reign of the last two kings of the Jagiellonian dynasty . In compliance with their commitment to securing the support of the great magnates on whom they chose to base their power, Sigismund I the Old (1467-1548) and Sigismund II Augustus (1520-1572) refused to endorse political arrangements advocated by the representatives of the Lower House of Parliament. The failure to reform the country along the lines suggested by the latter group led, in the long term, to political chaos. Unlike Jasienica, according to whom the Commonwealth degenerated into anarchy because of the errors committed almost exclusively by the rulers, the academic historians, whose views were inspired by Marxism, linked the state’s political impotence with the policy pursued by the whole nobility as a class. However, as the author shows, in Rzeczpospolita Obojga Narodów Jasienica radically changed his views. In his later work, all responsibility for the future anarchy was shifted onto Sigismund III Vasa (1566-1632) and his Catholic fanaticism. In revising his interpretation of what is known as the nobles’ anarchy, Jasienica drew, at least to some extent, on works by Jarema Maciszewski and Władysław Czapliński, historians who also represented the official historiography of the Polish People’s Republic.

Opis:
The life and work of J. Lyaskovskyi (1826–1889) remained out of the attention of Belarusian literary historians for a long time. By the way, this native of the Belarusian region was active as a poet, novelist and publicist for more than thirty years (1855–1887). The present article attempts to reconstruct the writer's creative biography on the basis of his own correspondence to Warsaw publiccations („Gazeta Polska", "Gazeta Warszawska", "Gazeta Rolnicza", "Gazeta Świąteczna", etc.), archival materials and posthumous memories of friends and acquaintances. and also to reveal the points of contact of his texts with Belarusian topics. The poem W cudzej stronie, where folk memory was postulated as a heroization of the past of the region, which was extremely relevant in the conditions of the Russian occupation, is especially valuable in the context of the writer’s works. Also important is the article Słówko o pieśni, in which the publicist passionately defended the identity of the Belarusian language and its right to exist.

This article discusses those moments of Jonas Basanavičius’s biography that while being closely connected, in one way or another, with the cultural field of Central Europe also inspired directly Basanavičius’s life and work. When considering the role of Central Europe, one should take into account a very important moment of Basanavičius’ biography, i.e. the time when he lived in Bulgaria for twenty-five years, first in Lom Palanka and Elena, later in Varna. Although physically living in Bulgaria, he was culturally determined by and adopted historical existential experience of Central Europe, considered as a geopolitical zone of Habsburg imperial influence. This experience was clearly reflected in two spheres of Basanavičius’s life: in the national cultural work (historical cultural aspect) and in the medical practice (medical anthropological aspect). Visually speaking, he became a doctor by carefully dissecting Lithuanian history. He became a historian by insistently trying to awake the national memory and language. But if Basanavičius understood medical practice as the field of rational decisions and the application of empirical knowledge, the ancient history became for him the ground of unhindered philological improvisation.

This article concerns a collection of Ignacy Krasicki’s essays written in his last years, entitled Uwagi. Despite the great variety of subjects in all the essays, the author has discovered a surprisingly coherent vision of people, society and the country. This vision can be interpreted as a program for the preservation of Polish identity during the Partitions of Poland and the rebuilding of social bonds.

In the 17th century, the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth became a country that French people liked to visit. Many of them left descriptions of the country which was different to their own in certain aspects. One of these aspects was Polish people’s religiousness and their attitude to nonCatholic religions. They were surprised at tolerance for people of another faith among the nobility and at the royal court, the co-existence of churches of different denominations and the lack of mutual aggression. On the other hand, they could see Polish people’s attachment to tradition and their original rites, at the same time pointing out their excessive demonstration of religious feelings, sometimes even bordering sanctimoniousness.

Opis:
The present analysis of military operations carried out by Tatar Hordes in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries has shown that these operations were basically shaped by asymmetric actions. Their main characteristics were secrecy of action up to the moment of attack, use of information-and-intelligence warfare struggle instruments, a total character of operations taken against civilians, their material resources and economic infrastructure, with use of terrorist tactics and means of psychological impact that aimed at intimidating the community under attack. The actions of Tatar Hordes were primarily focused on non-military aspects and took advantage not only of classic military tools but also a combination of political measures and instruments as well as those typical of economy, these including a variety of economic and demographic pressures. Pursuing asymmetric action was in the hands of the Giray (Gerey) dynasty one of the most important tools enabling them to efficiently achieve their political goals in the international arena and to support the economic development of the Crimean Khanate through permanent transfers of slaves and tangible property of various sorts.

Opis:
According to the analyzed examples the artistic image of Kostyushko has been widely used as a concept by Belarusian poets and translators since the 19th century. They broke with this tradition in Soviet times. The image of the hero functions as a symbol in the cultural and historic discourse of Belarusian poets. The patriotic feelings are of Lithuanian-Belarusian nature without the division into Lithuanian or Belarusian type. The presence of various historical periods on the territory of modern Belarus has been emphasized.
