Opis:
Steamboats transformed rivers in 19th-century United States, providing what many people considered a kind of mastery over nature. In literature from the period, while most writers marveled at or exulted in that perceived mastery, some questioned the origins of the reputed conquest. Did it result from human ingenuity? divine inspiration? a deal with the devil? Amid all the fog, smoke, and various other vapors associated with the steamboat, vivid stories, compelling dramas, and comic searches for meaning took shape, and no literary work captured the tension informing, uncertainty surrounding, and ramifications emerging from this instance of technological innovation as powerfully as The Confidence-Man: His Masquerade (1857). Herman Melville’s last novel, The Confidence-Man explores the author’s notion that “Books of fiction” can perhaps give readers more truth, “more reality, than real life can show.” Literature, for Melville, was an opportunity to reconsider the nature of things and our means of understanding that nature. In The Confidence-Man, he presented readers with a different view of the Mississippi River and the curious vessels working its waters. The novel imagined The Devil himself to be on board the steamboat, imperiling the soul of America.

Kateřina Váňová argues that reading narrative literature both contributes to the development of competencies in school-age readers and has a positive influence on a child’s personality in general. In the article’s analytical-interpretative part, she examines the potential of using artistic texts in the process of building emotional maturity in children. She draws attention to the method’s practical application in the process of socialization and of building self-knowledge.

Opis:
The topic of the article is an analysis of the positions of today’s interpretations of the old Polish literature. Firstly, the position of the interpreter was examinated in the context of the methodological map of medieval, Renaisssance and Baroque studies in Poland. Secondly, it is about the chronological location of the interpreter, generally beyond the horizon of medieval and early modern authors’ expectations toward future readers, that was limited by the eschatological perspective (near the end of the world). The issues of empathic references and affective reactions have also been raised, which are considered here as a stimulating experience of “recognizing continuity” between the ancient and present epochs. At last, the article presents the justification for the interpretative practice that could be called “the poetology of insight” – in reference to the remarks by Roland Barthes and Hans Ulrich Gumbrecht.

Opis:
The author analyzes and interprets the style, structure, and narration in the novel that marked the transition in Nałkowska’s fiction from the Young Poland phase to the inter-war phase. The author shows the place of the novel in Nałkowska’s work, presenting the links with the work of other women writers of the 19th century, especially Orzeszkowa and Zapolska. The author attempts to demonstrate that Narcyza’s features elements of novelistic, feminine polyphony and irony (thanks to the use of the work of literary mothers); such elements were rare in the novelists earlier texts. The second part of the article is devoted to the analysis of the main heroine; the author demonstrates that Nałkowska wants to make the character a problematic and ideological heroine in the Bakhtinian sense. The author analyses the novelist’s techniques of “advancing” Narcyza, and the attempts to extricate the heroine, who is a marriageable maid, from the romance-like situation and to turn her into a serious character in the sense that used to be exclusively possible for male characters.

Opis:
Being a result from the 2008/9 research into interpretation of Aboriginal literature within Polish readerships, the article explores ways in which Indigenous characters are imagined and understood by Polish readers. Also, given that literatures and their characters are usually looked throughout the readers’ schemata and memory scans, it shows the dominant ways in which the Polish readers interpret and communicate with some of those characters.
