The life of Enlightenment celebrities from the spheres of aristocracy, politics and science — which were swarming with original, eccentric and brilliant figures — almost provokes to be included in the framework of the fictional story. Also many literary works from this era, amazingly modern in form and content and well written, still tempts to literary „dialogue” with them. Contemporary authors readily use these „goods” searching new themes and artistic solutions. For these reasons Jan Potocki has earned the great interest of the creators. His astonishingly original and eccentric life has inspired both Polish (e.g. M. Choromański, J. Lechoń, T. Jurasz) and foreign authors (e.g. Rüdiger Kremer). His works have aroused equally strong interest, especially The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, a masterpiece of world literature, inspiring many important and talented writers, Polish and foreign ones (e.g. M. Gretkowska, K. Rudowski, L. Rosendorfer, J. Fowles). Undoubtedly, Potocki’s work and biography can provide a lot of creative satisfaction and they are a mine of literary ideas, starting from biographical facts, by borrowing motifs and ending with stylization „games”.

One of the last great novels of José Saramago, Death with Interruptions, begins with an epigraph taken from Ludwig Wittgenstein: “If, for example, you were to think more deeply about death, then it would be truly strange if, in so doing, you did not encounter new images, new linguistic fields”. The aim of my paper is to ponder on what kind of a new language game the Portuguese writer is offering us in his book and how to interpret his investigations from the angle of another contemporary literary and philosophical thanatological discourses.

The Champion Of The World is a book concluding scientific conferences dedicated to the person of Marcin Świetlicki. It does not bring any new to knowledge about his artistic creation but collects a variety of topics. The most important of them is the relation between Świetlicki’s writing and the Romantic tradition. Unfortunately, the speakers seem not to focus enough on popcultural themes and the metaphysical dimension of the writer’s poems and prose. The reader will find three controversial statements of young critics who suggest that Świetlicki is becoming less valued among poets and readers of the younger generation. However, their claims seem to be greatly exaggerated. One thing is certain that Marcin Świetlicki is still a great ironist who provokes differing opinions about himself.

Recenzja poświęcona jest napisanej we współpracy sześciu autorów pracy Comi-canalyse. Eine Einführung. Recenzent przedstawia rudymentarny zarys badań nad literaturą komiksową, charakteryzuje i ocenia treść pracy oraz wskazuje na jej istotność w rozwijaniu badań nad tym rodzajem literatury.
The review is devoted to the work Comicanalyse. Eine Einführung, written in collaboration of six authors. The reviewer presents a rudimentary outline of research on comic book literature, characterizes and evaluates the content of the work and points to its importance in developing research on this type of literature.

Głównym celem reportera / fotoreportera jest uchwycenie interesującego, szokującego materiału, który mógłby mieć wpływ na emocje czytelnika. To dlatego bieda, cierpienie i śmierć stają się najważniejszymi tematami, a reporter podąża ich ścieżką, bez względu na to, czy takie działania wydają się moralne, czy nie. Wówczas jednak pisarz może łatwo stracić z oczu swój główny cel, człowieka. Człowieka, który odsłania całą nagą prawdę, odsłania cierpienie, mając nadzieję na poprawę swojego losu istoty, by na koniec zostać porzuconym przez reportera i stać się po prostu jeszcze jedną dobrze sprzedaną historią. Celem mojego artykułu będzie przyjrzenie się amoralnej postawie reportera i relacji: reporter / fotoreporter – główny bohater tekstu. Analiza oparta będzie na najnowszej książce Wojciecha Tochmana – Eli, Eli. Aby bardziej uwypuklić główną tezę artykułu, współczesny reportaż skonfrontowany został z tym z okresu międzywojennego, reprezentowanym przez pionierów reportażu społecznego – Irenę Krzywicką i Wandę Melcer. Celem artykuły jest wskazanie ewolucji gatunku, jego transformacji i ich przyczyn.
The main goal of a reporter / photojournalist is to capture some interesting, shocking material, one that would affect the emotions of a reader. Therefore, poverty, suffering and death become the most important, and the reporter follows their path no matter whether such actions seem moral or not. The writer might then easily lose the main focus, a man. A man who reveals all the naked truth, uncovers the suffering, hoping to improve his or her being. At the end, such people are abandoned by the reporter and they become just a well-sold history. The purpose of my paper will be to look closer at the amoral attitude of a reporter and the relationship: reporter/ photojournalist – the main character of a text. My analysis will be based on Wojciech Tochman’s latest reporter’s book – Eli, Eli. To prove my thesis more distinctly, I will confront the contemporary reportage with the one from the Interwar period represented by the pioneers of social reportage – Irena Krzywicka and Wanda Melcer. My goal will be to indicate the evolution of the genre, its transformations and their causes.

The article shows the results of the analysis of literary “trauma without trauma” concept by Daniele Giglioli, observed in prose pieces of Italian writer, Aldo Nove. The Autor of the paper explains the theory of the Italian literary scholar and searches for its reflection and its way of presenting in the newest Italian literature on the example of Nove’s stories: Ruanda and Vermicino from the collection Superwoobinda (1998) and Il giorno più bello della mia vita from Anteprima mondiale (2016). The aim of the examination is to respond to the question, what, according to the writer, is the trauma of the contemporary society and in which way is it presented in the contemporary literature.

The article contains considerations regarding memory of the Holocaust in Polish contemporary prose and analyses the arguments for and against fictitious representations of theShoah. The author discusses the changes in treating fiction which narrates the history of Jewish people during the Second World War – from works of fiction published after the war (e.g. Wielki Tydzień by Jerzy Andrzejewski) to popular thrillers written in the 21st century. The main part of this article is devoted to a novel Tworki written by Marek Bieńczyk in 1999, telling a story of young people – Poles and Jews – employed in a mental hospital during German occupation. The novel was at the centre stage of discussion about relationship between fiction and the Shoah theme, yet the author of the article argues that it may serve as an important stepping stone in exemplifying history. This literary vision of the Holocaust (defined as “pastoral thriller”) shows educational possibilities of fiction.

Przedmiotem artykułu jest praca Agnieszki Nęckiej Emigracje intymne. O współczesnych polskich narracjach autobiograficznych. W tekście wskazano różne modele doświadczenia emigracyjnego scharakteryzowane w publikacji przez autorkę, która badając twórczość Zygmunta Haupta, Zbigniewa Kruszyńskiego, Manueli Gretkowskiej, Artura Leczyckiego, Mikołaja Łozińskiego, Tomasza Piątka, Michała Witkowskiego i Magdaleny Tulli, kategoryzuje emigrację jako realną, literacką oraz biograficzną. Zauważono również, że autobiograficzne mierzenie się autorów, wymienionych przez Agnieszkę Nęcką, z obcością i poczuciem odrzucenia oraz budowaniem własnej tożsamości na wygnaniu, pełni funkcję autoterapeutyczną. Publikację uznano za ważną pozycję w badaniach nad współczesną polską literaturą emigracyjną.
The subject of the text is a publication by Agnes Nęcka Intimate emigrations. On Polish contemporary autobiographic narratives. Various models of emigration experience were indicated in the text. All were characterised in the publications by the author who has studied the works by Zygmunt Haupt, Zbigniew Kruszyński, Manuela Gretkowska, Artur Leczycki, Mikołaj Łoziński, Tomasz Piątek, Michał Witkowski and Magdalena Tulli and on this basis has categorised the emigration as real, literary and biographical. It has also been noticed that autobiographical attempts made by the authors, listed by Agnieszka Nęcka, characterized by strangeness, feeling of rejection and building a separate identity on the exile, perform auto therapeutic functions. The publication was recognized valid in the research on contemporary Polish emigration literature.

Przedmiotem uwagi w artykule jest twórczość wybranych pisarzy, którzy w tekstach poetyckich manifestują związki z określonym miejscem – Częstochową i jej okolicami, gdzie spędzili wczesne lata życia lub osiedlili się tu w wieku dojrzałym. Na przykładzie utworów poetyckich wybranych twórców prześledzono, w jaki sposób miejsce ważne dla twórcy kształtuje jego światopogląd, sferę wartości, wyobraźnię. Użyta w tytule szkicu formuła obejmuje tu dokonania, które wykraczają poza wąsko rozumiany regionalizm; utrwalają ślady miejsc, a jednocześnie nadają im głębsze znaczenia.
The article is dedicated to the works of selected writers who manifest their relations with a particular place – Częstochowa and its environs in their poetic texts This are the places where they spent the early years of their lives or settled down in as adults. Selected poetic works show how a place important for an author shapes his or her view on life, the sphere of values and imagination. The wording used in the title encompasses the achievements that go beyond the narrowly understood regionalism; they preserve the traces of places and at the same time give them deeper meanings.

В данной статье повесть Владимира Кантора Крокодил рассматривается как произведение о современном русском интеллигенте. Сопоставление деклараций героя с его поступками и действиями позволяет увидеть в нем нерешительного и бессильного интеллигента, близкого чеховскому. А сравнение этого протагониста с героинями Людмилы Петрушевской позволяет прийти к заключению, что мужчины, так же как и женщины, в анализируемых произведениях оказываются в одинаковой степени эмоционально инфантильными.

W artykule dokonano przeglądu odwołań do literatury współczesnej w pracach naukowych Mariana Maciejewskiego. Wskazano dwa rodzaje nawiązań. W publikacjach dotyczących romantyzmu zauważono wiele wskazań na kontynuację tej tradycji w literaturze współczesnej, zwłaszcza liryki lozańskiej (m.in. Cz. Miłosz, T. Różewicz, E. Bryll) i gawędy szlacheckiej (M. Wańkowicz, K. Brandys, A. Kijowski, M. Białoszewski i in.). Natomiast w pracach poświęconych zaproponowanej przez Maciejewskiego „interpretacji kerygmatycznej” zwrócono uwagę na większą frekwencję tekstów współczesnych, szczególnie poetyckich. Więcej miejsca poświęcono jedynemu opublikowanemu przez Badacza artykułowi, w całości dotyczącemu literatury XX wieku, tj. Kerygmatycznej interpretacji przesłania Pana Cogito.
In the article a review is done of references to modern literature in academic works by Marian Maciejewski. Two kinds of references are indicated. In publications concerning Romanticism many indications have been noticed to a continuation of this tradition in modern literature, especially of the Lausanne lyric (among others, works by Cz. Miłosz, T. Różewicz, E. Bryll) and of the gentleman's tale (M. Wańkowicz, K. Brandys, A. Kijowski, M. Białoszewski and others). On the other hand, in works devoted to the “kerygmatic interpretation” proposed by Maciejewski the reader's attention is drawn to a greater frequency of modern texts, especially poetical ones. More space is devoted to the only article published by the researcher, that is solely concerned with literature of the 20th century, namely, “Kerygmatic interpretation of Mr Cogito's Message”.

The aim of the article Different faces of old age as perceived by the students of Polish studies is to present how old teachers perceive old age. The exemplification material consists of three texts: Winter tale. An essay on the old age of Ryszard Przybylski, “The Old Man’s Route”. An attempt at old age politics by Tadeusz Sławek and Lala Jacek Dehnel. Hermeneutical reading allowed for the creation of several images of autumn of life: a painful, marked by suffering attempts to overcome and suffering in a creative act; old age as a possibility of a deeper look at the spiritual dimension of human existence and old age reconciled with the laws of transiting the events immersed in the act of memorization.
Celem artykułu Różne oblicza starości w refleksji studentów polonistyki jest przedstawienie sposobu postrzegania starości przez przyszłych nauczycieli. Materiał egzemplifikacyjny stanowią trzy teksty: Baśń zimowa. Esej o starości Ryszarda Przybylskiego, „Trakt starego człowieka”. Próba polityki starości Tadeusza Sławka oraz Lala Jacka Dehnela. Hermeneutyczne czytanie pozwoliło na stworzenie kilku obrazów jesieni życia: bolesnej, naznaczonej cierpieniem próby przezwyciężenia i cierpienia w akcie twórczym; starości jako możliwości pogłębionego spojrzenia na duchowy wymiar ludzkiej egzystencji oraz starości pogodzonej z prawami przemijania zanurzonej w akcie memoracji danych wydarzeń.
