Opis:
Ionic liquids (IL) are defined as compounds consisting only of ions with a melting point below 100°C. [1,2,4]. The first obtained ionic liquid was ethylammonium nitrate synthesized in 1914 by Paul Walden as a result of the protonation of ethylamine with nitric acid [4]. New group of IL are amino acid ionic liquids. They are non-toxic and bio- renewable ionic liquids of natural origin. The amino acids contain at least two functional groups, an amino group and a carboxyl group, which makes them both cationic and anionic in the amino acid ionic liquid. Amino acid ionic liquids attract more and more attention in the field of catalysis, as solvents in chemical transformations and cellulose solvents due to low production costs and their biodegradable. Compounds based on imidazolium, phosphonium, ammonium and choline ionic liquids found a wide application in biological sciences, modern chemistry and materials science [10]. One of their biggest advantages is the ability to absorb CO2 (especially their amino acid derivatives), which increases the chance of eliminating carbon dioxide from the environment. Amino acid ionic liquids have also found application in the field of catalysis.

In this work the results of experimental research of the sonoluminescence of water and biological liquid (plasma of blood) at different temperatures are described. The studied blood plasma was taken from normal and pathological patients. Sonoluminescence of water was found to decrease with a decrease in temperature. Samples of normal blood plasma produce sonoluminescence with approximately constant intensity at cooling. In contrast, sonoluminescence of pathological blood plasma increases with decreasing temperature. These results can be useful for investigations of the nature of sonoluminescence as well as for medical diagnostics.

Ionic liquids (ILs) have gained a significant attention as alternative solvents in many chemical and biological reactions. ILs have evolved as a new type of non-aqueous solvents for biocatalysis, because they can stabilize and activate enzymes. Ionic liquids to be considered as so called “green solvents” should possess only very low or no toxicity to living organism and the environment. Currently, very little is known about the biotoxicity of ionic liquids. Within this paper a relative toxicity of two ionic liquids 1,3 dimethylimidazolium methyl sulfate [MMIM][MeSO4] and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride [HMIM][Cl]) on the growth of Escherichia coli (E.coli) was evaluated. In this study we focused on ionic liquids, which potentially could increase activity of β-galactosidase produced by selected strain of E. coli. The inhibition of cell growth in the presence of various ionic liquids was determined using both, solid and liquid cultures. Liquid culture was incubated in culture medium with different concentrations of ionic liquids (0.1, 1, 5, 10% (v/v)). Determination of the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC50) of ionic liquids was based on monitoring of E. coli growth by optical density measured at 600 nm using densitometer. In the second method the solid culture plate with addition of various amount of ILs has been used. The number of colonies formed on the solid culture plate was converted to colony forming units (CFUs). The obtained results have confirmed, that prescreening based on cytotoxicity tests is a key element in selection procedure of ILs for any biotechnological processes based on application of microorganisms.

The paper presents a mathematical model of three-component flow of the liquid-liquid vaporgas type including the mass exchange between the liquid and its vapor. The model is implemented in the Multi Flower 2D calculation package and used for computer simulations of flows with cavitation. An algorithm for model implementation, basic tests and an example of application are presented. The model's quality was assessed with a special test station equipped with a cavitation chamber allowing cavitation studies. The final section of the paper includes a qualitative comparison of observations made at the laboratory station with the results of numerical simulations, discusses the model's advanrages, dis-advantages and possible further development.

Chitin deacetylase is the only known enzyme which is able to deacetylate N-acetyl-D-glucosamine units in chitin or chitosan chains. As chitin can hardly be dissolved in organic/inorganic solvents, new solvents are still searched. Ionic liquids are promising for that application and for homophase enzymatic deacetylation. The aim of the work was to investigate the influence of selected ionic liquids on activity of chitin deacetylase. It has been shown that [Amim] ionic liquids increase the activity of chitin deacetylase. The highest activity was observed for [Amim][Cl]. Ionic liquids with shorter (ethyl (C2)) and longer side chain (buthyl (C4)) only insignificantly influenced the activity of the enzyme. All tested ionic liquids with [Br] anion increased the activity of chitin deacetylase while the [Emim] and [Bmim] cation in combination with [Cl] anion inhibited the activity of the enzyme.

Artykuł zawiera rezultaty badań doświadczalnych oraz obliczenia numeryczne wyznaczenia wartości temperatury zapłonu (flash point) dla wybranych mieszanin cieczy palnych. Badania doświadczalne przeprowadzono w standardowym urządzeniu badawczym firmy Walter Herzog GmbH, typ HFP-339, działający w oparciu o metodę Pensky-Martens [5]. Badania numeryczne zrealizowano w opracowanym przez autorów kodzie numerycznym przy wykorzystaniu MS Excell i Visual Basic, z wykorzystaniem modeli dla mieszanin idealnych i nieidealnych. Wykonano również analizę porównawczą uzyskanych wyników.
This paper presents results on the experimental and numerical study on flash point for selected liquid fuel blends. The experimental part was done with the use of testing apparatus from Walter Herzog GmbH, type HFP-339 for Pensky-Martens methodology. The numerical study was conducted by our home-made software using MS Excell and Visual Basic scripts for ideal and non-ideal mixtures. As a conclusion the analysis of both experimental and numerical results was reported.

Ionic liquids have attracted considerable interest as excellent alternatives to organic solvents to be used in homogeneous and biphasic processes. Ionic liquids are non-volatile, non-flammable and their “green” character has usually been justified with their negligible vapour pressure. However, the marketing of any chemical substance requires the determination of their impact on all elements of nature. Determination of the potential ecotoxicity of new chemical compounds is associated with conducting research on the effects of those compounds on the growth and development of selected organism. The phytotoxic properties of chiral ionic salts with the alkylimidazolium cation and the tetrafluoroborate anion were assessed for selected weeds popular in Poland: gallant soldier (Galinsoga parviflora Cav.), white goosefoot (Chenopodium album L.) and common sorrel (Rumex acetosa L.). It was found that 3-alkyl-1-[(1R,2S,5R)-(–)-menthoxymethyl]imidazolium tetrafluoroborates – ([C8-Im-Men][BF4]) and ([C9-Im-Men][BF4]) were low toxic to plants. A higher toxicity to terrestrial plants was characterized by ([C11-Im-Men][BF4]). The toxicity effect of compounds depended non only on the length of the alkyl chain in the function group but also on the concentration of the used compound and the type of plant which was sprayed with the tested compound.

In this article there is discussed the influence of ionic liquids on natural environment on the basis of detailed analysis of the literature information and the results of the Authors' researches carried out within the framework of the development and research project no. PBR/15-249/2007/WAT-OR00002904 financed by Ministry of Science and Higher Education during 2007-2011. The literature information about toxic features of ionic liquids is very skimpy, but the detailed analysis of it and the results of our own researches allow us to say that not all ionic liquids should be treated as fully environmentally friendly substances. Among these substances, there are non-toxic and moderately toxic but there are very toxic liquids, too. Therefore, uncritical rating all ionic liquids among Green Chemistry is inappropriate. The test results of ionic liquids ecotoxicity were compared with the results obtained for standard oils used at lubrication technologies, particularly at motorization. All reference oils, according to EU classification, were non-toxic. The tests were carried out in accordance with OECD 202 European normative document, which recommends carrying out the tests for Daphnia Magna crustaceans. There were carried out: acute immobilization tests to Daphnia Magna, calculation of the effective concentrations EC50-t and evaluation of ionic and reference liquids toxicity with regard to used bioindicators

In this article there is discussed a possibility of forming the liquid crystal structure in ionic liquids and its influence on performance characteristics, especially tribological, of these liquids. Formation of such thermal phase might influence on, among other things, easier creation of the boundary lubricating film, which is characterized by high viscous anisotropy. The results of tribological tests showed better lubricity of selected ionic liquids than modern PFPE oils. Identification of mesophase in ionic liquids was necessary. This method is described in the paper. Biolar PL polarizing interference microscope with thermal stabilizing table, with birefraction system, and Brüker Discover 8 powder diffraction instrument with a Cu lamp and monochromator were used. There was being searched the state characterized simultaneously by optical anisotropy properties and liquid state of aggregation. For identification of phase transition temperature, the additional calorimetric tests were carried out during the cycle of heating and cooling. These researches were carried out within the framework of the development and research project no. PBR 15-249/2007/WAT-OR0002904, financed by Ministry of Science and Higher Education during 2007-2011.

Extensive efforts have been made for many years by the power generating industry to replace conventional solid and liquid insulation with synthetic materials. Those measures are aimed at increasing the load capacity, improved fire safety and extending transformer life during exploitation. Modern insulating materials include aramid fibre-based paper and insulating fluids made of synthetic and natural esters. The paper presents research results of the electrostatic charging tendency (ECT) of mixtures of fresh and aged mineral oil Trafo En with synthetic ester Midel 7131 and natural ester Midel 1204. The measurements were taken in a flow-through system using the pipes made of metal, cellulose and aramid paper. The influence of the liquid flow velocity, the type of material of the measuring pipe and the mixture content on the level of the streaming electrification current generation was determined.

W artykule tym dokonano przeglądu metod oraz stanowisk badawczych służących do określania granic wybuchowości cieczy palnych. Zaprezentowano tu stanowiska i metody zalecane przez międzynarodowe standardy, takie jak PN-EN, czy ASTM. Opisano również prowadzone dotychczas wybrane prace naukowe w zakresie badań eksperymentalnych granic wybuchowości cieczy palnych. Artykuł ten stanowi przegląd dostępnych metod badawczych oraz aparatury do prowadzenia pomiarów granic wybuchowości cieczy palnych na potrzeby bezpieczeństwa w przemyśle.
This paper presents a state of the art on testing methods and experimental facilities for determination explosion limits of vapors from combustible liquids. The paper presents facilities and testing methods recommended by international standardization authorities, e.g. PN-EN and ASTM standards. Also a survey of experimental research works on explosion limits of flammable liquids is given. The paper summarizes the available testing methodologies and facilities which can be necessary for proper determination of vapors flammability in the process industries.

The reactions of Br2 '- anion radicals with thiocyanate anions in the ionic liquid methyltributylammonium bis[(trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl]imide (R4NNTf2) were studied by pulse radiolysis. Reaction of solvated electrons with BrCH2CH2Br (DBE), k = (1 2)×108 L.mol 1.s 1, leads to the production of Br2'- anion radicals. The intermediate absorption spectra following pulse radiolysis of DBE/SCN-/Br-/ solutions in R4NNTf2 correspond to Br2 '-, BrSCNo- and (SCN)2'- anion radicals. The participation of these radicals in the spectra changes with progressing reactions and depends on the concentration Br- and SCN- in the solution.

The paper presents results of experimental research and numerical simulations of the sloshing phenomenon. The research was focused on computation of the heeling moment affecting stability of a vessel. The proposed linearisation enables application of the results to the asses- sment of the ship’s stability. The dependence of the heeling moment upon localisation of a tank in the ship’s hull is analysed. The heeling moment obtained in the course of the research was compared to the moment computed in accordance with the Intact Stability Code requirements. The study may be a contribution to the more sophisticated estimation of the ship’s stability than it is achieved nowadays.
Artykuł prezentuje wyniki badań eksperymentalnych i symulacji numerycznych ruchu cieczy w niepełnych zbiornikach statku. Istostą badań było wyznaczenie momentu przechylającego statek wskutek ruchu cieczy w zbiornikach, co wpływa na stateczność poprzeczną statku. Zaproponowana metoda linearyzacji momentu umożliwia implementację wyników badań przedmiotowego zjawiska do praktyki oceny stateczności poprzecznej statku. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na zależność pomiędzy momentem przechylającym statek a lokalizacją niepełnego zbiornika względem osi kołysań bocznych. Zarazem wyznaczany moment przechylający został porównany do quasi-statycznego momentu wyliczonego zgodnie z zaleceniami Kodeksu ISC. Przeprowadzone badania mogą stanowić element poprawy wiarygodności oceny stateczności statku dokonywanej ru- tynowo przez oficerów ładunkowych.

The process of destabilisation of an axi-symmetric, core-annular flow (CAF) of two Newtonian fully miscible liquids widely differing in viscosity is investigated. Formation of periodic structures is observed in experiments, predicted by the linear stability theory and simulated numerically using the volume of fluid method (VOF). Possible influence of this phenomenon on mixing on the molecular scale is discussed.
