Opis:
Black alder is an important forest−forming species in Poland. Its wood is decomposed by many species of fungi. Ganoderma lucidum (Curtis) P. Karst. is a species of Basidiomycetes which belongs to family Ganodermataceae, order Polyporales. This fungus causes white rot decay of wood in dead and sometimes living alder trees. G. lucidum has been under partial protection in Poland since 2014. It is also red−listed as a rare species (category R – taxa with small populations) on the ‘Red list of the macrofungi in Poland’. The fungus was cut out with a sizeable fragment of wood from the alder stump in Łuków Forest District (eastern Poland) and transported to the laboratory of the Department of Mycology and Forest Phytopathology, Warsaw University of Life Sciences−SGGW. Pure culture of G. lucidum mycelium was obtained from a fragment of fruitbody. The aim of this study was to investigate, through laboratory decay tests, the ability of G. lucidum to degrade alder wood. Sterilization of wood samples (30×20×20 mm) consisted of placing the material in an accelerator and irradiating it with high−energy electrons at a dose of 30 kGy at the Institute of Nuclear Chemistry and Technology in Warsaw. On the next day, wood samples were put into 200 ml flasks with mycelium of G. lucidum on agar−wort medium (2 samples per flask). The flasks were placed in a Heraeus BK 600 incubator for 180 days, with a constant temperature of 22°C and humidity of 80 ±5%. Every 30 days 10 flasks were randomly selected, i.e. 20 samples of alder wood from this experiment. After each incubation period the samples were removed from the flasks, cleaned to remove mycelia and dried at a temperature of 105°C until they reached constant weight. By comparing mass of the samples at the start and the end of experiment in an absolutely dry state, the relative wood mass loss was calculated. After exposure times 180 days, the relative weight loss of alder wood as a result of decay by G. lucidum mycelium was on average 10.88%. The rate of the decay was almost constant during the study period. On some alder wood samples structures resembling fruitbodies of G. lucidum were noticed.

Lignicolous fungi include many wood decay fungi. Studies on molds and decay fungi are necessary to enable us to control their growth on wood and wood products. A survey was undertaken during 2012-2013 to detect the various ligniclous fungi in Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada and Krishna District, Andhra Pradesh. In a recent study, lignicolous fungi were collected from living trees and fallen branches from Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada, India. On the basis of occurrence Coriolopsis aspera (Junghuhn) Teng. Fulvifomes nilgheriensis (Montagne) Bondartseva & S. Herrera, Ganoderma australe (Fr.) Pat., G. lucidum (Curtis) P. Karsten, Hexagonia apiaria (Pers.) Fr. Phellinus linteus (Berk. & Curt.) Teng. Trametes cingulata Berk. Hook., T. cotonea (Pat. & Har.) Ryv. T. gibbosa (Pers.) Fr. Schizophyllum commune Fr. were reported from Krishna district for the first time. F. nilgheriensis (Montagne) Bondartseva & S. Herrera is recorded for the first time from India. Even though being preliminary, our results point to the necessity of conservation and protection of recent fungal diversity but, in our opinion, not by making so-called “Red list of endangered species", which, due to the lack of information and very poor evidence on this group of organisms in the region under the consideration, are extremely unreliable and therefore disputable, but rather through the very short list of few not endangered species, conditionally called “White list of not endangered fungal species", if such species recently exist at all.

Lenzites sterioides
Lignicolous fungi
Volatile organic compound (VOC)
Opis:
This study aims to identify the lignicolous basidiomycetes species that synthetize volatile organic compounds with potential applications in food industry, cosmetics, perfumery and agriculture. We have collected fruiting bodies from different woody plants and the lignicolous basidiomyctes species were identified by their macroscopic and microscopic characteristics. From the context of the fresh fruiting bodies small fragments of dikaryotic mycelium were extracted and inoculated on PDA and MEA media for isolation and pure cultures are kept in dark at a temperature of 25°C. 11 species of lignicolous basidiomycetes, belonging to 6 families and 5 orders were isolated in pure culture. The isolates were analyzed in vitro and the main characteristics that were observed are: the general aspect of the surface and the reverse of the colonies, the changing in colour and the growth rate of the mycelium and also the specific odour which indicates the presence of the organic volatile compounds. for the first time lignicolous fungi like Flavodon flavus (Klotz.) Ryv., Ganoderma lucidum(Curtis) P. Karst, Hexagonia apiaria (Pers.) Fr., Lenzites betulina (L.) Fr. Lenzites eximia Berk. & M.A. Curtis, Lenzites sterioides (Fr.) Ryv., Navisporus floccosus (Bres.) Ryv., Phellinus gilvus (Schwein.) Pat., and Trametes pini (Thore) Britzelm. were producing characteristic smell that indicates presence of Volatile organic compounds. For the first time from Gujarat, India the Volatile organic compound producing fungi were identified and their culture characters also described.

Opis:
Black alder Alnus glutinosa (L.) Gaertn. is an important forest−forming species in Poland, with more than 5% participation in the species structure. It is a typical lowland species, especially in the river valleys, on the banks of the lakes and in the land depressions. It is one of the main species in the following habitats: boggy mixed broadleaved forest, alder and alder−ash forest, riparian forest and moist broadleaved forest. As a valuable admixture alder is introduced in the habitat of boggy coniferous forest and boggy broadleaved forest. Until recently black alder was considered in Poland as a species with a very low level of danger from the pests and diseases. The situation changed at the turn of the centuries, when the deterioration of the health status of the alder stands began, which led locally to the mass dieback of the trees, mainly in the stands which are over 20 years old. In the following years, the phenomenon was intensified. The largest number of such stands was recorded in 2006. The strongest deterioration of health condition of the trees was observed in five regional directorates of the State Forests: Białystok, Lublin, Torun, Wrocław and Olsztyn. The study gives information on lignicolous fungi found on black alder in 62 alder stands, which exhibited the most severe signs of the dieback. The research was conducted in 14 forest districts and in Poleski National Park (fig.). The surveys revealed the presence of 49 taxa of the lignicolous fungi (44 Basidiomycota and 5 Ascomycota). The most common species were Xanthoporia radiata, Stereum hirsutum, Daedaleopsis confragosa, Armillaria spp. as well as S. subtomentosum (tab. 2). The disease contributing to the local dieback of black alder in the stands (mainly in the Lublin Regional Directorate of the State Forests) is the root rot caused by Armillaria species. Many species of lignicolous fungi (e.g. Fomes fomentarius, Fomitopsis pinicola, Ganoderma applanatum) penetrate into previously weakened trees, causing decay of wood, which can accelerate the dying of single trees.

Opis:
Wood degrading capacity of lignicolous fungi was studied by decay test. In which two methods were followed, i) wood chips method ii) wood block method. Eight timbers infected by six fungi were selected for studying percentage of decay and biochemical test was done to know delignification. After 12 months, 90 % of wood block of T. arjuna was decayed by L. stereoides. In teak wood 16.82 % of decay was due to H. apiaria in 3 months. As the percentage of moisture was less, percentage of weight loss was also less; this indicated that decay capacity of fungi will depends on % moisture content in wood. The percentage loss in hot water soluble substrates was more in case of T. crenulata due to L. stereoides for 5 months, whereas lowest in case of teak wood decayed by H. apiaria for 5 months. The percentage loss in ethanol benzene soluble substrate was more in case of Adina wood decayed by C. versicolor for 5 months, whereas lowest in case of teak wood infected with L. stereoides for 3 months. As the incubation period increases, percentage loss in acid soluble lignin was more in case of infected woods. L. stereoides, C. versicolor, and H. apiaria showed selective delignification in all infected woods, whereas T. pini showed simultaneous degradation of lignin in all woods tested. The valuable timber like teak wood was not resistant to wood decay because they loss 50% of lignin. The in vitro wood decay test can‟t be taken as absolute evidence for wood decay behavior of lignin-degrading fungi, so we should conform decay of wood by consider biochemical test. For rapid evaluation of wood decay the wood chip method was best suitable. For the first time the wood decay and biochemical test of 8 wood samples infected by white rot fungi like S. commune, L. stereoides, H. apiaria, C. versicolor, T. pini and soft rot fungi like T. viride was studied.
