Stefanowski był jednym z najważniejszych twórców / działaczy łemkowskiego odrodzenia po akcji „Wisła”. Ze względu na to, że jest to wydanie polskojęzyczne, kierowane także do czytelnika nie-Łemka, w recenzji skupiam się na tym, jak ważne dla podtrzymania łemkowskiej tożsamości były i są radykalne wybory i niezłomność działaczy. Recenzowaną książkę lokuję jako drogowskaz, mapę, z której Łemkowie mogą odtworzyć drogę do swojej tożsamości, a czytelnicy spoza łemkowskiej społeczności zrozumieć na czym polega wyjątkowość osób takich, jak Stefanowski dla społeczności, które nie mają swojego państwa i chroniących jej dziedzictwo kulturowe instytucji.
The text is a review of Paweł Stefanowski’s book 'Wiersze wybrane', published thanks to the efforts of the writer’s children in the year that would have been the 90th anniversary of his birth. Stefanowski was one of the most important writers/activists of the Lemko revival after the akcja „Wisła”. Since this is a Polish-language edition, directed also to a non-Lemko reader, in the review I focus on how important the radical choices and steadfastness of the activists were and are for the maintenance of Lemko identity. I locate the reviewed book as a signpost, a map from which Lemkos can retrace the path to their identity, and readers outside the Lemko community can understand what the uniqueness of people like Stefanowski is to a community that does not have its own state and institutions protecting its cultural heritage.

Współcześnie Łemkowie to jedna z czterech uznanych prawnie mniejszości etnicznych w Polsce, do okresu wysiedleń w ramach akcji „Wisła” zamieszkująca w zwartej grupie obszar Beskidu Niskiego oraz zachodnich krańców Bieszczadów i wschodnich Beskidu Sądeckiego. Motyw wsi w sztuce i kulturze łemkowskiej nie jest tematem wielu badań i opracowań naukowych. Po akcji „Wisła” łemkowskie wioski opustoszały. Obecnie Beskid Niski nazywany jest krainą turystów, dlatego że młodzi Łemkowie wyjeżdżają do większych aglomeracji, a starsze pokolenia odchodzą. Wraz z wysiedleniem Łemków postrzeganie wsi uległo zmianie – młodzi Łemkowie, przepracowując temat straty, za główny punkt do badań biorą opuszczone łemkowskie wioski i problematykę tożsamości. Dostrzegają pozostawioną przez przodków pustkę i stawiają wyraźne pytania o odpowiedzialność za akcję „Wisła”. Celem artykułu jest analiza problematyki zmian społeczno-kulturowych oraz motywu samotności, zmienności i trwania. Tekst powstał w oparciu o materiały wywołane, czyli wywiady, badania socjologiczne oraz wybrane przykłady sztuki współczesnej podejmującej temat Łemkowszczyzny. Analizie zostały poddane prace m.in. Katarzyny Szwedy i Michała Szymko.
Nowadays, the Lemkos are one of the four legally recognized ethnic minorities in Poland, until the period of displacement under the „Vistula” operation, living in a compact group in the area of the Low Beskids and the western part of the Bieszczady and the eastern Beskid Sądecki. The theme of the village in Lemko art and culture is not the subject of much research and scientific studies. After the „Vistula” operation, the Lemko villages were deserted. Currently, the Low Beskids is called the land of tourists, because young Lemkos go to larger agglomerations, and older generations leave. With the displacement of the Lemkos, the perception of the village has changed – young Lemkos, working on the topic of loss, take abandoned Lemko villages and the issue of identity as the main point of their research. They notice the void left by their ancestors and pose clear questions about the responsibility for the operation „Vistula”. The aim of the research papers is to analyse the issues of socio-cultural changes and the theme of loneliness, changeability and duration. The text is based on evoked materials, i. e. interviews, available literature and selected examples of contemporary art dealing with the subject of the Lemko region. The works of, among others, Katarzyna Szweda and Michał Szymko.

The aim of this paper is to briefl y present the situation of the Lemko language from the historical perspective covering one hundred years of its development. The creation of Lemkos’ linguistic awareness and identity before their displacements (1945–1947) has been clearly refl ected in literature. It provides the foundation for reconstructing the main emancipatory identity line developed based on “our language”, equivalent to the local speech, followed by the Lemko intelligentsia, while confronting the social and political considerations of their native area. A drastic effect of the considerations was displacements, destruction of culture, and lack of conditions for fostering language. The recovery of language rights after 1989 has initiated a range of internal revitalisation processes and strategies supported also institutionally. They are, however, not able to stop the mass destructive processes resulting in the Lemko language being currently among the endangered ones.

Punktem wyjścia dla migracyjnej/diasporyjnej tożsamości Łemków były totalne dwuetapowe wysiedlenia tej społeczności w latach 1945–1946 i 1947. Wraz z tym faktem osiadła, rdzenna wspólnota, która ukonstytuowała swą tożsamość na wyznaczniku terytorialnym, stała się społecznością rozproszoną na kilku obszarach diasporyjnych. Musiała zatem dokonać się istotna reinwencja tożsamościowa konstruowana na wyznaczniku migracyjnym. Celem artykułu jest uchwycenie istoty mitu reinwencyjnego mającego wymiar rytualny – powtarzane cyklicznie rytuały podróżowania pomiędzy ziemiami wygnania i karpacką ojczyzną, oraz wymiar tekstualny – nadający sens i symboliczną wartość tym wędrówkom. Bazę empiryczną do badań stanowią teksty kulturowe, głównie piśmiennictwo łemkowskie z ostatnich dziesięcioleci oraz dane z obserwacji uczestniczącej i badań terenowych przeprowadzonych przez autorkę w 2017 roku na trzech znacznie oddalonych od siebie obszarach aktualnie zamieszkiwanych przez Łemków.
The total, two-stage resettlement of the Lemkos in 1945–46 and 1947 was the point of departure for their migration/diaspora identity. Consequently, the settled, native community that had established its identity upon a territorial determinant became a community dispersed over several diaspora territories. Therefore, a crucial identity reinvention had to take place, constructed upon the migration determinant. The purpose of this paper is to capture the essence of the reinventive myth of a ritual dimension—the cyclic rituals of traveling between the lands of expulsion and the Carpathian motherland, and the textual dimension—providing meaning and symbolic value to these treks. The empirical, material basis for the research is provided by cultural texts, mainly Lemko writings from recent decades, as well as data from participant observation and field studies carried out by the author in 2017 in three areas currently inhabited by the Lemkos and considerably distant from one another.

This article describes the main tendencies in the development of the Lemkian morphology, namely, in the inflection of the anaphoric pronouns in the speech of Lemkos. The focus is on determining similarities and differences between the inventory of grammatical forms, as described in the codified norm, and the pronominal forms, the use of which is typical for the actual spoken Lemkian (presented here as a corpus of Lemkian oral speech, consisting of conversations recorded within a family circle). The present comparative analysis shows that the paradigm of anaphoric pronouns in the Grammar of Lemkian language is no longer an adequate reflections of the linguistic reality.

The fact that the Lemko language is placed in the ethnolinguistic Western Slav-ic area next to the Polish language, which is dominant from the sociolinguistic point of view, has had and continues to have a significant impact on its development. Consequently, the Lemko language, similarly to other (Slavic) micro- languages, should be considered susceptible to changes resulting from the im-pact of exogenous factors, which can be observed even on a morphological level, which is generally perceived as particularly resistant to external influ-ences. However, research conducted on the basis of material from the spoken corpus of the Lemko language shows that not all linguistic changes currently taking place in that language have been caused by the impact of Polish.

This paper reports on the recent revival of the Lemko Association (Lemko Soyuz) in North America, under the auspices of the Carpathian Institute, a US federal and Connecticut state recognized tax-exempt, non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian educational corporation. The Lemko Association, founded in 1929, had become essentially defunct by the end of 2009. Beginning in 2010, however, in a new location and new legal status it has been revived, publishing a quarterly, “Karpatska Rus’”, books, pamphlets and flags and arranging for lectures.

The Lemko churches preserved to present times are one of the most characteristic elements of the cultural landscape of the northern Carpathians. They are also clear, visual evidence of the multinational and multi-confessional history of the Beskidy mountains. Both – dramatic and complicated history and contemporary situation of the Lemko minority, perfectly presents direct impact of political events on the history of the Lemkos and their spiritual and material culture. The main purpose of the article is to show, on the example of the Lemko region, the overriding influence of political conditions on the denominational structure. Transformations and political decisions made without the participation of the most interested, in this case the Lemkos, effectively determined the private sphere of life like a religious faith. It took place both in the twentieth century and also few hundred years earlier. It also takes place today.
Zachowane do dziś łemkowskie cerkwie są jednymi z najbardziej charakterystycznych elementów krajobrazu kulturowego północnych Karpat oraz dowodem na wielonarodową i wielowyznaniową przeszłość Beskidów. Dramatyczna i skomplikowana historia oraz współczesna sytuacja tego regionu pokazuje bezpośredni wpływ wydarzeń politycznych na dzieje Łemków, ich kulturę duchową i materialną. Głównym celem artykułu jest pokazanie na przykładzie Łemkowszczyzny nadrzędnego wpływu uwarunkowań politycznych na strukturę wyznaniową. Przekształcenia i decyzje polityczne, zapadające bez udziału najbardziej zainteresowanych (w tym przypadku Łemków), skutecznie determinowały tak bardzo prywatną sferę życia jak wiara religijna. Miało to miejsce zarówno w XX w., jak i kilkaset lat wcześniej, jest tak również współcześnie.

In 1947, as the result of the Vistula Operation, Lemkos were resettled to the Western and Northern Territories of Poland, this making them abandon their material possessions which remained at their former domicile prone to devastation. Certain Lemkos resented those developments to the extent that following 1956 some returned to their native land, determined to save their tangible and intangible culture. Amateur artistic projects were revived, and it was decided that traces of Lemko tangible heritage were to be taken care of. This led to the concept of creating an ethnographic Lemko museum. In 1968, using Teodor Gocz’s farmstead at Zyndranowa, a memento hall was created; it later assumed the name of the Museum of Lemko Culture. The institution continuously faced challenges: it lacked financing and factual supervision for its operation. Despite this, the Museum collection continued growing, and new buildings were safeguarded for the purpose. The Museum’s creators aimed not only at preserving and displaying traces of Lemko tangible heritage, but also at maintaining bonds of the displaced Lemkos with their former homeland. With time, the Museum also began playing an important role in preserving the Lemko ethnic identity.

The First World War imposed a severe stigma on the Lemko people, the Ruthenian mountaineers residing on the northern mountainside of the Carpathians. Military operations, political repressions, malnutrition, and epidemics of contagious diseases caused severe damages and losses in the population and materials. In the late 1914 and early 1915, the front-line was set through the Lemko Land. The area’s eastern part was occupied for several months by the Russians. The occupational authorities planned to annex the area after the war, as they recognised the Lemkos as part of the Russian nation. On the other hand, the Lemko people were generally treated by the Austro-Hungarian authorities with suspicion, as allegedly favouring Russia. They were accused of sabotage and collaboration with the occupiers. Many a Lemko was executed, often without any proof of guilt whatsoever. Some 2,000 were sent to an internment camp in Thalerhof, not far from Graz. The war facilitated the split among the Lemkos into those who considered themselves members of a Ukrainian nation and those who recognised themselves as a separate ethnic group.

Paweł Stefanowski: poeta, autor pieśni, etnograf i działacz społeczny. Stworzył podwaliny odrodzenia ruchu kulturalno-oświatowego na Łemkowszczyźnie po wysiedleniu Łemków (tzw. akcja „Wisła”). Z powołania był poetą. Wiersze zaczął pisać po łemkowsku w latach 50. XX wieku. Do wielu z nich skomponował muzykę. Pisał po łemkowsku, po ukraińsku i po polsku. Wydał kilka zbiorów poetyckich. Od 1964 roku prowadził w Bielance muzeum, gdzie eksponował własne zbiory, w tym największą ilość łemkowskich strojów ludowych w Polsce. Zajmował się również fotografią i już w latach 60. wykonał setki zdjęć m.in. materialnej kultury Łemków (cerkwie, kapliczki, zabudowania), z czego wiele obiektów już nie istnieje. Nakręcił wiele filmów dokumentalnych, m.in. film z pogrzebu Nikifora w 1968 roku.
Paweł Stefanowski: Lemko poet, song writer, ethnographer, and cultural activist. He laid the foundations for the revival of the cultural and educational movement in the Lemko region after the deportation of the Lemkos from their homeland (so called „Vistula action”). He was a poet by vocation. Poetry began to write in the 50s and composed music for many of them. He wrote in Lemko, Ukrainian and Polish and published several poetry collections. From 1964, he ran a museum in Bielanka, where he exhibited his own collections, including the largest number of Lemko folk costumes in Poland. He also dealt with photography and already in the 1960s he took hundreds of photos, e.g. material culture of the Lemkos (churches, chapels, buildings), many of which no longer exist. He has made many documentaries, including a film from Nikifor's funeral in 1968.
