Opis:
This paper presents a new method of recognizing handwritten signatures. Signature was treated as a collection of features of specific values. As features the values of x, y coordinates of signature points have been used. The method discussed in the paper is a modification of the method based on least squares contour alignment. This modification consists of dividing signatures into windows of the preset size and measuring the value of similarity between the windows according to their position in the signature. The effectiveness of the method was verified in practice. During the study, the influence of the parameters of the method on the obtained results was determined.

Opis:
A numerical simulation of an incompressible viscous flow using the finite element method is presented. In this study, the pressure stabilization technique is suggested for the treatment of the incompressibility constraint for both steady and unsteady flow cases. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, the pressure stabilization technique is used for steady flows only. The proposed technique allows for equal low-order interpolation polynomials to be used for all variables which circumvent the so-called LBB compatibility condition without pressure checker boarding and solution instabilities. Results are obtained for two benchmark problems, namely, lid-driven cavity flow and the vortex-shedding behind a circular cylinder. The results are compared with published numerical and experimental works with an apparent degree of success.

Opis:
The traditional approach relying on sight reduction tables, a non-programmatic location of the position fix and an inadequate allowance for observation errors is still widely pursued and advocated. In the late 1970s the programmatic Least Squares method (LSQ) was introduced which determines a random error fix (FixQ) for any multiple sights combination. B.D Yallop & C.Y Hohenkerk (1985) expanded LSQ to incorporate the computation of the random error margin of a fix. Several marketed PDA-based programs apply LSQ, but none have fully incorporated the random error margin as a guide for the navigator. All existing LSQ applications have two drawbacks. One is, all observation error is attributed to random sources, whereas the possibility of systematic error has in fact a long theoretical and practical background in celestial navigation. Systematic error represents a bias in statistical random error theory and can and should be allowed for. A major drawback is that existing LSQ program applications incorporate the running fix technique (RFT) traditionally applied in coastal navigation. It has no general validity in celestial navigation. The position circle of an earlier celestial sight can only be mathematically correctly transferred when its Geometric Position (GP) is transferred for the run data. A final aspect of reliability is the strategy adopted at the sight planning stage. At least during twilight observations, navigators should aim at getting three or four sights with a total azimuth angle >180o, with three successive subsights on each body. In such configurations FixQ and FixS will be relatively close together, generally obviating the need to process the sights for possible systematic error.

Opis:
The main aim of this work is to verify an influence of the response function type in direct symbolic derivation of the probabilistic moments and coefficients of the structural state variables of axisymmetric spherical steel dome structures. The second purpose is to compare four various types of domes (ribbed, Schwedler, geodesic as well as diamatic) in the context of time-independent reliability assessment in the presence of an uncertainty in the structural steel Young modulus. We have considered various analytical response functions to approximate fundamental eigenfrequencies, critical load multiplier, global extreme vertical and horizontal displacements as well as local deformations. Particular values of the reliability indices calculated here can be of further assistance in the reliability assessment by comparing the minimal one with its counterpart given in the Eurocode depending upon the durability class, reference period and the given limit state type.

Opis:
The main purpose of this work is to verify the influence of the weighting procedure in the Least Squares Method on the probabilistic moments resulting from the stability analysis of steel skeletal structures. We discuss this issue also in the context of the geometrical nonlinearity appearing in the Stochastic Finite Element Metod equations for the stability analysis and preservation of the Gaussian probability density function employed to model the Young modulus of a structural steel in this problem. The weighting procedure itself (with both triangular and Dirac-type) shows rather marginal influence on all probabilistic coefficients under consideration. This hybrid stochastic computational technique consisting of the FEM and computer algebra systems (ROBOT and MAPLE packages) may be used for analogous nonlinear analyses in structural reliability assessment.
