    Opis:
    Hospital management is an interdisciplinary issue, combining economic, technical, legal and IT aspects. The situation requires the application of complex management methods, which also include the concept of Lean Management (LM). The Lean Management concept applied in healthcare facilities is known as Lean Healthcare (LH) whereas in hospitals – Lean Hospitals. The aim of the article is to present the possibilities of using selected LM tools in improving the functioning of hospitals in the context of their sustainable development. The article focuses mainly on describing the advantages resulting from the application of the 5S method in hospitals, which contributes to saving hospital resources and to eliminating waste. This work is based mainly on secondary sources of information. The applied research methods such as Desk Research and non-participant observation confirmed the validity of using LM to improve the functioning of hospitals.
    Zarządzanie szpitalem jest zagadnieniem interdyscyplinarnym, łączącym w sobie aspekty ekonomiczne, techniczne, prawne i informatyczne, przez co wymaga stosowania złożonych metod zarządzania, do których zaliczyć można Lean Management (LM). Koncepcja LM zastosowana w placówkach ochrony zdrowia nosi nazwę Lean Healthcare, natomiast w szpitalach – Lean Hospitals. Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie możliwości stosowania wybranych narzędzi LM w usprawnianiu funkcjonowania szpitali w kontekście ich zrównoważonego rozwoju. W artykule skoncentrowano się głównie na identyfikacji korzyści wynikających z zastosowania metody 5S w celu maksymalizacji oszczędności zasobów szpitali oraz eliminacji wszelkich form marnotrawstwa. W pracy wykorzystano głównie wtórne źródła informacji oraz zastosowano takie metody badawcze, jak: Desk Research oraz obserwacja nieuczestnicząca, które potwierdziły zasadność stosowania koncepcji LM w celu usprawnienia funkcjonowania szpitali.

    The purpose of this article is to present the results from a survey concerning first-line managers’ assuredness about the effects of Lean after two years of Lean application in a Swedish healthcare organization. The purpose is also to reflect about assuredness as a driving force for sustainable change. Questionnaires were sent to all first-line managers in a healthcare organization in order to investigate how these managers consider their role, ability and conditions to create change according to Lean. One of the questions included 17 statements about how assured these managers were about the effects of Lean. The results from this question will be presented in this paper. The study showed that the majority of the first-line managers in this particular healthcare organization were assured that developmental work supported by Lean contributes to a higher patient focus, supports first-line managers with useful tools and methods, contributes to the development of an improvement culture and that the Lean concept in general is a support in improvement work. The question can either be used separately or as a part of an entire questionnaire in healthcare organizations. Asking first-line managers about their assuredness about the effects of Lean on a regular basis is one way to follow the Lean process from their perspective. The survey question might encourage discussions about the process of Lean and hopefully contribute to a greater understanding about the importance of assuredness and about the desired effects when applying Lean.

    Purpose: The purpose of the study was to identify waste in the selected health care facility, the types and sources of events that trigger it, and to indicate possibilities to shorten time in which patients wait for help. Material and Methods: The case study was an Emergency Department located in the Province of Silesia. The Issue is many hour queues at the Emergency Departments. Results: Time to receive medical treatment is too long. Not only are high-risk patients being taken care of, but also patients who did not manage to visit their family doctor (General Practitioner - GP). Conclusions: The authoresses formulated a thesis that there are possibilities to shorten the waiting time for medical services at the Emergency Department.

    Opis:
    Purpose: The paper presents an application of the Theory of Constraints (TOC) aimed at defining and maximising the potential of hyperbaric chamber as a key resource in a specialist hospital. Design/methodology/approach: The authors developed their own TOC based method of process improvement, supported by tools of Lean Management. Various constraints including an external one were taken into consideration. As a follow-up a project using the method was carried out in a hospital’s Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy laboratory. Findings: The developed and implemented practical solution has improved patients’ access to the service at about 40% per day, shortened patients’ waiting time at about 90% and helped to overcome the threat of financial underperformance. Moreover, in combination with strict safety rules, the solution has proven its high resistance against difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Research limitations/implications: A hyperbaric therapy is a narrow branch of medicine, therefore application of the method in other healthcare domains will require an appropriate adaptation. Practical implications: Despite the narrow subject of the study, the described approach is universal and can be used to maximise the capacity utilisation of various critical resources in hospitals and other healthcare providers. Originality/value: This is the first known to the authors application of a TOC/Lean based systematic hybrid approach to improve performance of a healthcare provider, which is taking into account several constraints including an external one. Additionally, this is the first paper on TOC in healthcare published in Poland.

    Modern technologies and technics nowadays play a very important role in optimizing many processes. Healthcare sector is a vital system of every country and it requires great investment and constant improvement, which makes integration with modern technologies and technics inevitable. Efficiency, speed and time savings are thus crucial for achievement of this integration. Lean RFID approach is completely new way of modeling and optimizing healthcare systems. The objective of this paper is to identify, describe and analyze recent trends in merging healthcare (Emergency Department) and Lean and RFID principles into a unique system. Obtained results indicate that the application of certain segments of Lean "thinking" significantly increases the efficiency of focused processes in healthcare. The main idea of the integration of medicine and Lean RFID approach is to constantly create and improve new values and reject all the activities that are categorized as "waste" in order to provide time savings, which are extremely important in this branch.

    Celem artykułu jest identyfikacja możliwości usprawnienia procesu leczenia udaru mózgu z wykorzystaniem metod zarządzania i działań doskonalących na przykładzie procesu leczenia pacjentów z niedokrwiennym udarem mózgu. Opisano w nim również zależności między społecznymi i środowiskowymi aspektami funkcjonowania placówek ochrony zdrowia. Szczególną uwagę poświęcono metodom złożonym uwzględniającym sprzężenie zwrotne przez oddziaływanie otoczenia zewnętrznego na proces leczenia uwarunkowany czynnikami demograficznymi i środowiskowymi. W pracy wykorzystano wnioskowanie indukcyjne z zastosowaniem metody desk research oraz wywiadów i obserwacji nieuczestniczącej. Jako paradygmat dominujący przyjęto założenie o dążeniu do spełniania celów dla gospodarek państw rozwijających się uwzględniające spójność społeczną, ekonomiczną oraz ekologiczną.
    The aim of the paper is to identify the possibilities of improving the stroke treatment process using management methods and taking the appropriate actions for improvement on the example of the treatment process of patients with ischemic stroke. It also describes the relationship between social and environmental aspects of the functioning of healthcare facilities. Particular attention was paid to complex methods which take into account feedback, such as the influence of the external environment on the treatment process, as conditioned by demographic and environmental factors. Inductive reasoning using the desk research method as well as non-participant interviews and observations were used in the work. As the dominant paradigm, the assumption was made to strive to meet goals for the economies of developing countries that consider social, economic and ecological cohesion.
