Opis:
The objective of this work was to compare the bioleaching with the acid leaching of uranium under similar process conditions within 65 days. The low-grade uranium ore used in the experiments was collected from Radoniow’s ‘small’ dump, Poland. Bioleaching and acid leaching studies were carried out in identical columns. The isolated bacterial consortium from the Radoniow’s mine was used for the bioleaching process. A solution of sulphuric acid and H2O2 as oxidizing agent was used for the acid leaching. The extraction of uranium under acid leaching conditions reached maximum of 64±13 % w/w after 31 days. The bioleaching of uranium achieved a maximum extraction of 75±15 % w/w after 55 days. In this study an attempt was made to demonstrate the relationship between the shrinking-core model and the experimental data by plotting the fractional conversion of uranium against time.

Opis:
Estimating groundwater vulnerability to pollution is based on the quantitative and qualitative assessment of the degree of exposure to the pollution. This article attempts to assess groundwater vulnerability to pollution in the area of a complex of landfill sites located in the supply area of one of the important groundwater reservoirs in southern Poland. Two dynamic leaching tests and two static tests were carried out on two different samples of slag from one of the metallurgical landfills during various periods of storage (15 year old waste and freshly deposited waste). Transport equations were based on the data from a column experiment. The advection-dispersion equation for column leaching was employed, which confirmed the simulation parameters through experimentation. The results of the leaching tests on chlorides showed that they are leached from the landfill over a period of ~60–90 years from the moment of depositing the waste. The seepage time for the Quaternary aquifer is 1–7 years and, for the Triassic aquifer, 5–40 years. The Backman’s contamination index (1998) values exceeded 25, while a high threat to groundwater is observed when the contamination index value equals 3. The use of all the aforementioned methods determined the most vulnerable area.

Opis:
A new method using non-salt roasting-alkaline leaching to treat vanadium slag was proposed in this study. The V(III) in vanadium slag is oxidized to V(V) by roasting and the latter can be effectively leached out as vanadate by alkaline leaching. This method possesses distinct advantage of being able to treat high-grade vanadium slag. For the South Africa high-grade vanadium slag, the maximum vanadium recovery of 98% was achieved when the reaction conditions were roasting temperature of 850 °C, roasting time of 2 h, alkali concentration of 30 wt.%, leaching temperature of 210 °C, and leaching time of 2 h. The roasting and leaching mechanisms have been well elucidated based on the XRD and SEM analysis results. The phases transitions of vanadium slag were clearly presented. This work has laid the foundation for the industrial application of non-salt roasting-alkaline leaching and provided new insights into effective extraction of high-grade vanadium slag.

A new method using sodium carbonate solution to treat a vanadium-bearing steel slag is proposed. The effects of the particle size, solid-to-liquid ratio, initial concentration of sodium carbonate solution, leaching temperature and stirring speed on the leaching rate of vanadium were investigated. The leaching kinetics of vanadium from the vanadium-bearing steel slag was studied, which indicated that the leaching rate was controlled by the step of diffusion through the solid layer around the unreacted core. The apparent activation energy for the process was 13.75 kJ/mol. By using this process, vanadium could be extracted effectively with the leaching rate of more than 80%.

Opis:
In classical models of the cavern leaching process, brine concentration is determined by calculating the increase (or decrease) of concentration in successive time-steps, based on the salt balance. In a quasi-stationary model it is assumed that changes in brine concentration are negligible in the balance. Consequently, a concentration needs to be found at which the leaching rate allows temporary concentration stability to be achieved. Here, both types of models are compared, using the simplest case possible, namely the beginning of initial cut leaching by the method of direct water and brine circulation with an isolated cavern roof. In the case of cylindrical shape of the cavern, both models are compatible. The quasi-stationary model does not take into account the leaching history, as it determines its variable asymptote rather than the brine concentration itself. In the case considered, the formula of the quasi-stationary model is so simple that calculations can be made using an MS Excel spreadsheet. However, in the general case, the algorithm of the quasi-stationary model is much more complicated than that of the classical model, especially if the cavern shape is complex and the method of reverse circulation is applied during the cavern leaching process.

The work deals with processes occurring on interaction of mine drainage waters with fine-grain dusty particles, and filtration of the water through sulphide rock mass. The studies have shown that the environmental hazard likely to be caused by the drainage waters of the Severny mining plant of the Kola MMC Ltd is lower than it might be expected owing to precipitating of the heavy metals by iron hydroxides and magnesium hydrosilicates. An assessment of the feasibility of hydrometallurgical processing of impregnated copper-nickel ores has been prepared.
Clay is widely used in a number of industries due to its special properties like fine particle size, brightness and whiteness, chemical inertness, platy structure, etc. In this study, the general characteristics of clays have been investigated by XRF, XRD, FT-IR, TG-DTA and SEM. The presence of iron as an impurity decreases its commercial value due to giving unwanted colors to clay mineral. Therefore, the dissolution capacity of clay ore was investigated by oxalic acid leaching. Under optimized leaching conditions (0.8 M oxalic acid concentration, 85°C reaction temperature, 1.75 ambient pH, 106+75 µm particle size, 15% w/v solids concentration and 150 min. leaching time) with 250 rpm stirring, 83.90% of $Fe_2O_3$ was removed. The amount of iron oxide, the main impurity in the clay, has been reduced from 2.70 to 0.40%. The iron dissolution kinetics was mainly controlled by internal diffusion control of shrinking core model and activation energy, $E_a$, of 26.29 kJ/mol was obtained for the process. The results also showed that the studied clays have adequate characteristics for ceramics industry, earthenware and porcelain production.

Opis:
In the recycling of WEEE, two approaches are common: a pyrometallurgical or hydrometallurgical treatment, preceded by a mechanical and/or physical separation. In this study, twostep processing of unmodified waste samples of LCD screen inverters was investigated: hightemperature processing followed by acidic leaching under fixed conditions (1M H2SO4, 90 ℃, 1 bar). The analysis carried out concerned a correlation between the type of HT treatment (pyrolysis, incineration, or gasification) and the dynamics of metals’ leaching from samples pretreated this way. It was found that HT method can act as “thermal disintegration”, since it affects, to a varying degree, the structure of the samples and cause elimination of organics and carbonaceous residue (incineration/gasification). The greatest mass loss (~18%) and the most loosened structure was observed for the gasified sample. Varying oxygen potential in HT-processes correlates well with the leachability of thermally treated inverters. The incineration was found to be the most favorable for copper extraction (>95%) by acidic leaching due to oxidized form of Cu, whereas Cu leaching from pyrolyzed and gasified samples needed oxygen and was controlled by the oxygen supply achieving only 36/43% after 6 h. The course of Pd leaching was similar to copper, although with lower efficiencies; 47% of palladium was extracted from the incinerated sample, and only 4 or 7% from gasified and pyrolyzed samples, respectively. Au was leached immediately but only to a slight extent. Contrary to Pb, leaching of Zn, Sn, Sb, and Ni was gradual, probably due to the formation of alloys with copper.

Opis:
Various types of waste materials containing zinc (e.g. dusts and sludges from gas dedusting process) are obtained in steel industry. The contents of Zn in these materials may vary considerably. Even a low concentration of zinc in recirculated products precludes their recycling in ferrous metallurgy aggregates. Long storage of this type of material can lead to contamination of soil and water by zinc compounds which can be leached out by acid rain, for example. This paper focuses on research involving alkaline leaching tests of low zinc content iron-bearing materials. These tests were preceded by the analysis of the elemental, phase and grain size composition, and analysis of the thermodynamic conditions of the leaching process. The main aim of research was to decrease the content of the zinc in the sludge to the level where it is suitable as an iron-bearing material for iron production (~1% Zn). Leaching at elevated temperatures (368 K, 60 min) has led to a decrease in the zinc content in the sludge of about 66%. The research revealed that long hour leaching (298 K, 100 hours) carried out at ambient temperatures caused a reduction in zinc content by 60% to the value of 1.15-1.2% Zn.

Stainless steel production generates solid wastes such as dust and sludge that are considered as harmful in most industrial countries. Today dusts are recycled in separate treatment plants as these dusts contain valuable metals such as alloying elements. A direct recycling of dust back to steel production is hindered due to the presence of elements, especially zinc, that cause operational difficulties in the stain-less steel making process. In this paper two different stainless steel converter argon oxygen decarboniza-tion dusts (AOD1 and AOD2), from Outokumpu Stainless (Tornio, Finland), were leached using NaOH solutions. The purpose was to selectively leach zinc out from the dusts and to find factors that affected most dissolution of zinc. The dust samples were leached under atmospheric pressure and the factors tested were temperature, sodium hydroxide concentration, liquid to solid ratio (L/S), stirring rate and oxygen or nitrogen gas bubbling. All the studied factors had statistically significant effect on the dissolution of zinc. The maximum zinc extraction was achieved at 95°C, with 8M NaOH solution, stirring rate of 400 rpm and L/S ratio of 30 and was around 80% for AOD1 dust and around 50% for AOD2 dust. Difference in maximum zinc extraction arose from the mineralogical differences of the dusts. Zinc was leached selec-tively. Among alloying elements only molybdenum was leached and practically no iron, chromium and nickel were dissolved.

In this paper two different stainless steel electric arc furnace dusts (EAF1 and EAF2) from Outokumpu Stainless (Tornio, Finland), were leached using NaOH solutions. The purpose was to selectively leach out zinc from the dusts and to find factors that affected most dissolution of zinc. From all leaching factors temperature, agitation speed and NaOH concentration were found to be statistically strongly significant, whereas a liquid-to-solid ratio and bubbling gas were only somehow significant. Two experiments from the test series gave clearly higher zinc extraction, that is around 60% for EAF1 and 30% for EAF2. For those experiments, a strong 8 M NaOH solution with the high temperature and agitation speed was used but bubbling gas and liquid-to-solid ratio changed. Zinc was leached selectively and practically no iron, chromium and nickel dissolved.

The purity of a quartz ore is relatively low at a $SiO_2$ content of 97.18%, and the main impurity in the ore is $Fe$, $Al$, and $Ca$ bearing minerals. The main component in an industrial waste bacteria (WJ) is polysaccharides, which may be used as depressors for inhibiting iron minerals in quartz flotation. Moreover, WJ belongs to microbial inhibitors because it is mainly composed of bacteria. As a result of this study, a concentrate grade of 99.88% at recovery over 80% was obtained under the condition of 2000 g/Mg WJ dosage, a grinding fineness of 70% -0.074 mm, pH 11.7, 400 g/Mg $CaCl_2$, and 800 g/Mg $NaOL$ in the flotation experiments for the quartz ore. Moreover, a $SiO_2$ grade of 99.97% at a recovery of 68.85% was obtained at an acid dosage of 40 kg/Mg by using mixed acid of $H_2SO_4$, $HCl$, $HNO_3$, and $HF$ in mass ratios of 20%, 30%, 20%, and 30%, respectively, in subsequent acid leaching of the quartz flotation concentrate. Zeta potential analysis before and after the interaction of quartz and hematite with WJ showed that WJ increased the zeta potential of hematite significantly but had little impact on the zeta potential of quartz, indicating stronger adsorption of WJ on hematite than on quartz. FTIR analysis showed that there exist not only –$COOH$, –$CH_2$–, and –$CH_3$, which are the functional groups of starch but also $NH_2$ and –$C=O-NH$– in WJ. The $NH_2$ and –$C=O-NH$– in WJ are the important groups for adsorption, so the depressing effect on hematite was better for WJ than starch.

Zinc leaching residue is a good source of zinc and has a great potential to be utilized. However, it is very difficult to recover lead, zinc and silver from the residue by traditional technologies. In this study, a new technology based on conversions of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 in the residue to their respective sulfides by reduction roasting with coal powder followed by a flotation treatment was developed. The effects of roasting temperature, coal dosage, reaction time and pyrite dosage were investigated at a laboratory scale. The results showed that the conversion extent of PbSO4 and ZnSO4 under the optimal experimental conditions was 71.89 and 69.76%, respectively. A flotation concentrate containing 39.13% Zn, 6.93% Pb and 973.54 g/Mg Ag was obtained from the treated material, and the recovery of Zn, Pb and Ag was 48.38, 68.23 and 77.41%, respectively. The tailing containing ZnFe2O4 or Fe3O4 could be either stockpiled or further disposed.

Opis:
Production of mining waste is inherent to the mining and enrichment of raw materials, including hard coal. Hard coal production over the years has left a number of objects in the form of variable, in terms of structure and age, mining waste storage facilities (heaps, dumps). These objects are characterized by varying composition and particle size distribution of the material and the conditions prevailing in the solid change over time as a result of physical and chemical weathering processes. In recent years, the economic importance of gangue accompanying coal production has changed and now more and more often it is treated not as waste but as a source of mineral resources for economic use. The paper presents an analysis of the available literature data on the quality of mining waste, both those intended for economic use and accumulated in dumps and heaps. Identification of the quality of mining waste was conducted in the profile of the dump, which remained after the closed Siersza hard coal mine in Trzebinia. the age of stored waste in this location is over 15 years. A majority of the dump’s surface is already reclaimed, and in addition the area has partly already managed to integrate into the landscape through natural reclamation. The material intended for the analyses was collected at the near-surface section of the heap’s profile, from two depth intervals: from 0.2 to 0.3 m below ground level and from 0.4 to 0.7 m below ground level. The material was analyzed in relation to the parameters and limits set for mining waste classified as inert waste. therefore, the samples were examined for the presence of sulfur and arsenic, cadmium, cobalt, chromium, copper, mercury, molybdenum, nickel, lead, vanadium, and zinc. The contents of the components in the total and leachable form was analyzed. The testing of elements leaching from each sample was determined using the static method with the basic 1:10 test. Based on the conducted analyses, it is concluded that the tested waste from the near-surface layer of the mining dump has a strongly variable total content of individual elements, depending on the sampling sites location. The total sulfur content in the waste deposited in the dump more than a dozen years ago reaches a wide range of values, with an average at 1.67% and 4.35%, depending on the depth of the collection. In general, a lower sulfur content is observed in the samples closer to the surface than in the samples collected somewhat deeper in dump. The total arsenic content in the waste deposited in the heap is at an average level of 6.39 mg/kg, cadmium 1.90 mg/kg, cobalt 7.18 mg/kg, chromium 116.19 mg/kg, copper 41.6 mg/kg, mercury 0.15 mg/kg, molybdenum 1.02 mg/kg, nickel 30.9 mg/kg, lead 138.9 mg/kg, vanadium 86.9 mg/kg and zinc 477.4 mg/kg. Based on the conducted studies, one cannot make conclusions about the accuracy of the coexistence of sulfur and other elements in the tested material. The obtained results do not allow for the inclusion of the tested waste into the category of inert mining waste, mainly due to the exceedance of sulfur, lead and zinc content in the material and (in relation to the leaching) also cadmium, chromium, copper, mercury and nickel.
