    Based on three case studies, the text presents the analysis of the process of the reappropriation of three selected “left”/”abandoned”/”post-German” medieval artworks in the three important conservation projects from the first decade of the post-war reconstruction of Poland (1945–1955). The circumstances, course and consequences of mounting late gothic Silesian altarpieces in the presbyteries of the monastery church in Mogiła and in the rebuilt and restored cathedrals in Warsaw and Poznań will be traced. This will enhance the analysis of the process of post-war creation of three monuments of Polish medieval art, different in their architectural and artistic costume and history. They will be examined in the context of foreign artworks, which despite being “left”/”abandoned” remained the carriers of a complicated, multithreaded history, unknown to or ignored by decision-makers.

    Opis:
    A contribution to the consideration of the use of wigs in medieval sculpture in Silesia. The aim of the articles to present the issue of the use of natural hair (usually horsehair) in gothic Silesian sculpture and to highlight important problems and topics that should be taken up for better recognition of this issue. The wigs in medieval sculpture – most often appearing in Christ’s representations – were intended to strengthen realism, and thus to make the faithful deepen their contemplation and focus on the Passion of the Christ. Their use was a response to the then emotional piety and also to the needs of the faithful. Among the objects preserved in Silesia, a group with wigs or originally equipped with them can be indicated, which confirms this trend also in this region.

    Ołtarz z Łubowa pojawił się w ostatnich miesiącach II wojny światowej. W czasie cofania linii frontu niemiecki oficer zdeponował paczkę u rodziny ze Starowic. Po wojnie, gdy pakunek został rozpieczętowany, depozytariusze odkryli w niej późnośredniowieczny tryptyk. Został on umieszczony w kościele filialnym w Starowicach, a w 1975 roku w kościele parafialnym w Łubowie. Ołtarz został odrestaurowany w latach 1974–1975 oraz w latach 1994–1995 przez pracownie konserwatorskie w Gdańsku i Szczecinie. W centralnej części retabulum znajdują się figury Matki Bożej z Dzieciątkiem i dwóch świętych: Jakuba Starszego i Antoniego Opata. W dwóch skrzydłach znajdują się kwatery z postaciami świętych. Lewe skrzydło zawiera figury świętych Jana Chrzciciela, Piotra i Pawła powyżej oraz Barbary, Katarzyny i Dionizego poniżej. W prawym skrzydle występuje przedstawienie dwóch niezidentyfikowanych świętych oraz Jana Ewangelisty w górnej kwaterze, a w dolnej Małgorzaty, Doroty i Wawrzyńca. Ideą przewodnią obiektu jest historia Odkupienia reprezentowana przez Madonnę z Dzieciątkiem, które w rączkach ma owoc – jabłko, symbol grzechów i ich odkupienia. Grupy postaci reprezentują poszczególne kategorie świętych – apostołów, męczenników, dziewic i spowiedników. Ołtarz powstał w kontekście życia późnogotyckich społeczności miejskich Pomorza – miast, które zajmowały się handlem międzynarodowym – jako szczególne narzędzie komunikacji wizualnej głoszące orędzie zbawienia. Zofia Krzymuska-Fafius dostrzegła w nim analogie stylistyczne nawiązujące do niemieckich realizacji późnogotyckich w Osnabrück, Bordesholm i Würzburgu, a także powiązała go ze środowiskiem ołtarza pasyjnego ze Szczecina Dąbia. Jednak jednocześnie istnieje możliwość zestawienia go z najbliższymi ołtarzami ze Starego Ludzicka i Koszalina jako przykładami podobnych koncepcji późnogotyckich retabulów.
    The altarpiece of Lubowo (Łubowo) appeared in the time of the last months of Second World War. In fact, a German officer deposed the parcel by the Pomeranian family. After the war, when the parcel was unpacked, the depositors discovered the late medieval triptych on. It has been conceded to the filial catholic church in Starowice and in 1975 placed in the parish church in Lubowo (Łubowo). The altarpiece has been restored in the years 1974–1975 and in the years 1994–1995 by the renovation ateliers in Gdansk (Gdańsk) and Szczecin. The retable has a central part with the figures of Mother of God with Child and two saints – James the Older and Antony Abbot. The two wings contain the quarters with figures of saint. The left wing contains the figures of saints John the Baptiste, Peter and Paul above and Barbara, Catharina and Dion¬isius below. The right wing contains the representations of two unidentified saint and saint John the Evangelist above and Margaretha, Dorothy and Laurent below. The message of this composition of figures consist on the Redemption represented in the figure of Madonna with Child, because the little Jesus bears the apple, symbol of sins and its redemption. The groups of figures represents the particular categories of Saints – apostles matyrs, virgins, confessors. The altarpiece has been created in the context of life of urban communities of Pomerania – the cities who managed the international commerce. The citizens needed a particular tool of visual communication, who proclaimed the Christian realities, Zofia Krzymuska-Fafius recognized the stylistic analogies which connect our altarpiece with different other realizations in the German areas. She founded similarities in the late gothic works of sculpture from Szczecin Dabie (Dąbie), Osnabrück, Bordesholm and Würzburg. But it is possible to compare our retable with different example of Pomeranian altarpiece from Stary Ludzick and Koszalin.

    This article presents a new interpretation of the ideological message of Blatná Castle after its expansion by Benedikt Ried, commissioned by Zdeňek Lev of Rožmitál around 1520–1530. The key to deciphering the biblical code of the residence of this powerful magnate is found in two columns standing in front of the castle façade, which have not been included in previous research. Their dilapidated state, as well as residually legible profile forms and ornaments, un equivocally point to their dating back to the time of Ried’s expansion. In the history of art, they are a well- known imitation of the bronze pillars of Jachin and Boaz, placed in front of the Old Testament Temple of Solomon. The expressive oriels of the part of the castle erected by Ried may be a reference to a diagram similar to a pentagram, often appearing on the pages of codices called the clavicula Salomonis. In the beginning, they contained the instructions of the great biblical king to his son Roboam. This is reflected in the family situation of the builder, as it is generally agreed that Blatná Castle was built by Zdeněk Lev in connection with the marriage of his son Adam. References to Solomon were quite common at the time, both at Prague Castle and at the residences of several Silesian dukes. They should not be surprising in the case of someone who, for more than 20 years (1507–1530), was the most important person in the state after the ruler (the highest burgrave of Prague Castle). Zdeněk Lev was a very active and influential politician with a Catholic orientation and nationalist, Bohemian disposition, who liked to moralize and judge and use biblical examples or episodes from Bohemian history.

    The review concerns an extensive, collective monograph on the altar of St. Anne from 1519—1524, made by a Bavarian sculptor known as Monogramist IP. The relief was commissioned by the Bohemian lord, Zdenek Lev of Rožmitál, who was a leading figure in the political life of the Crown of the Kingdom of Bohemia in the first thirty years of the 16th century. The review proposed a different motive for commissioning the work. Its content related to family and motherhood suggests that it was created as a gift from a father to his son Adam and his wife, a Silesian noblewoman, Anna Haugwitz of Biskupice, in 1518. The review emphasized the extraordinary values of the publication, both scientific and editorial.

    Malarstwo w Krośnie w pierwszej połowie XVI wieku – addenda W roku 2007 ukazała się książka Piotra Łopatkiewicza Malarstwo w Krośnie w pierwszej połowie XVI wieku, stanowiąca dysertację doktorską autora przygotowaną w 2003 roku, w Instytucie Historii Sztuki UJ. W pracy tej przedstawiono kilkadziesiąt dzieł malarstwa tablicowego i monumentalnego oraz podjęto próbę powiązania ich z krośnieńskim środowiskiem artystycznym. Analiza i charakterystyka materiału zabytkowego, uwzględniająca tematykę dzieł, pozwoliła na rekonstrukcję rozproszonych nastaw ołtarzowych, omówienie ich genezy artystycznej i pierwotnego miejsca przeznaczenia, w końcu zaś – wyodrębnienie kilku grup dzieł malarstwa, łączących się z konkretnymi warsztatami. Co ważne w kilku przypadkach – po raz pierwszy – możliwe okazało się powiązanie dzieł z imionami czynnych w Krośnie malarzy. Ujawnienie na przestrzeni ostatnich 20 lat, kilku ważnych zabytków malarstwa tablicowego (Krosno, Kombornia, Warzyce) i monumentalnego (Krosno, Domaradz), skłoniły autora do zaprezentowania zarówno wyników prac badawczych prowadzonych w ostatnim czasie, jak i podjęcia próby powiązania ujawnionych dzieł malarstwa z wyodrębnionymi wcześniej grupami warsztatowymi. Przedstawione wyniki badań dowodzą, iż w dziedzinie malarstwa średniowiecznego tego regionu czas odkryć wciąż jeszcze się nie zakończył, a każde nowe odkrycie, poszerzając zasób znanych dzieł malarskich, skutkować będzie w przyszłości koniecznością dopisywania kolejnych addend.
    Painting in Krosno in the First Half of the 16th Century – Addenda Piotr Łopatkiewicz’s book Malarstwo w Krośnie w pierwszej połowie XVI wieku (Painting in Krosno in the First Half of the Sixteenth Century), which is the author’s doctoral dissertation prepared in 2003 at the Art History Institute of the Jagiellonian University, was published in 2007. This work presents dozens of works of panel and monumental painting and attempts to link them to the Krosno art community. The analysis and characterization of the monumental material, taking into account the subject matter of the works, made it possible to reconstruct the scattered altar retables, discuss their artistic origins and original destination, and finally distinguish several groups of painting works, linking them to specific workshops. Importantly, in several cases – for the first time – it proved possible to link the works to the names of painters active in Krosno. The discovery over the past 20 years, of several important monuments of panel painting (Krosno, Humniska, Warzyce) and monumental painting (Krosno, Domaradz), prompted the author to present both the results of research work carried out recently and to attempt to link the revealed works of painting to the workshop groups identified earlier. The presented research results prove that in the field of medieval painting of the region, the time of discovery is still not over, and each new discovery, expanding the stock of known paintings, will result in the need for more addenda in the future.

    Artykuł opisuje i analizuje zespół sześciu herbów wygrawerowanych na stopie gotyckiego krzyża relikwiarzowego z XIV-XV wieku (obiekt nie jest jednorodny), znajdującego się w muzeum w Sandomierzu. Krzyż właściwy z emaliowanymi plakietami został wykonany w XIV wieku, a w wieku XV dodano mu puszkę relikwiarzową i podstawę, na której umieszczono herby. Analiza programu heraldycznego wskazuje, że zespół herbów należy datować na 1440 rok i łączyć z osobą króla Władysława III (Warneńczyka). Tym samym, przyjęte dotąd w literaturze przedmiotu datowanie puszki relikwiarzowej i podstawy krzyża na drugą połowę XV wieku należy skorygować na lata 1439-1440, a dorobione wówczas elementy krzyża uznać – wbrew starszym poglądom – za królewską fundację Władysław III.
    The paper describes and analyses a group of six coats-of-arms engraved on the foot of a Gothic reliquary cross from the 14th-15th centuries (the object is not uniform) in the collection of the Museum in Sandomierz. The cross proper with enamelled plates was made in the 14th century, while in the 15th a reliquary box was added with a foot, on which the coats-of-arms were placed. The analysis of the heraldic programme indicates that the armorial group should be dated to 1440 and linked to the person of King Władysław III (of Varna). Therefore, the dating of the reliquary box and the foot of the cross, accepted so far by the literature as the second half of the 15th century, should be corrected to the years 1439-1440, while the added elements should be recognised – contrary to earlier opinions – as a foundation of King Władysław III.

    Prace konserwatorskie przy nastawie z Góry (niem. Guhrau), prowadzone w latach 1938–1943 we Wrocławiu pod nadzorem Güntera Grundmanna, ukazują złożony proces bardzo solidnej i fachowej konserwacji, będącej zarazem kreacją średniowiecznego dzieła w duchu doktryny „twórczej ochrony zabytków” (Schöpferische Denkmalpflege). Nieczęsto jednak zdarza się, by motywacje ideologiczne nie pozostawiały większego uszczerbku na rzetelności podejmowanych działań. Rekonstrukcja wypadków poprzedzających rozpoczęcie prac, jak również analiza zapisów w prowadzonej dokumentacji, doniesień prasowych oraz przebiegu innych tego typu realizacji na terenie Śląska pozwalają nakreślić historię poliptyku oraz okoliczności sprzyjające wzrostowi zainteresowania nim badaczy. Ujęcie tego zjawiska w kontekście śląskim, z zasygnalizowaniem procesów zachodzących w Republice Weimarskiej i III Rzeszy, umożliwia naświetlenie problemu wtłoczenia zabytku przyzwoitej klasy w tryby muzealno-konserwatorskiej machiny pracującej na rzecz ochrony zabytków regionu, a zarazem wspierającej politykę kulturalną III Rzeszy.
    The conservation work on the retable from Góra, now the main altarpiece of the cathedral in Poznań, carried out between 1938 and 1943 in Wrocław under the supervision of Günter Grundmann reveals a complex process of very solid and professional conservation which concurrently was a process of creating a medieval work in the spirit of the doctrine of “creative conservation of monuments” (Schöpferische Denkmalpflege). It is not often that ideological motivations do not leave much impact on the integrity of the actions taken. The reconstruction of the events preceding the commencement of conservation works, as well as the analysis of their documentation, related press reports and the course of other ventures of this type undertaken in Silesia, make it possible to outline the history of the polyptych and the circumstances conducive to the growing scholarly interest in it. Locating this phenomenon in the Silesian context and highlighting the processes taking place in the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich makes it possible to address the issue of how a monument of decent quality was forced into the cogs of a museum-conservationist machine working to protect the region’s monuments while supporting the cultural policy of the Third Reich.

    Opis:
    The former Cistercian monastery in Lad on the Warta, today: the seat of the seminary of the Salesian Society, features a Late Gothic carved triptych with the figures of the Virgin Mary and Child and the following saints: Barbara, Catherine, Nicholas and Stanislaw. It has been established that in 1969 the triptych was transferred to Lad from an unidentified locality in the land of Lubusz. The monument was in a highly unsatisfactory condition, with the side wings detached from the main chest, and a missing fragment in the wing with St. Nicholas, while the figures showed traces of mechanical damage and repainting; in addition, they were assembled in an altered order. In 1979 it was decided to subject the monument to conservation, carried out by the Lodz-based conservator Jan Potz; the work lasted from May 1979 to October 1981. The conservation programme was subjected to the sacral purpose of the triptych and its functions. Apart from normal conservation, consultation with conservators and an art historian led to a decision to reconstruct the gilding, the silver plating, the missing wood, etc. The reconstruction of the polychrome was conducted with spots and dots in attempt to render them invisible from a greater distance. All the reconstruction and pointing are reversible. The Triptych from Lad is an altar with a main chest 97 x 94 x 16 cm large, a right wing 98 x 47,5 x 16 cm large, and a left wing 97,5 x 47 x 15,5 cm large. The formal features, especially the cut of the costume worn by St. Barbara, make it possible to place the origin in the first quarter of the sixteenth century.
