Opis:
In first part of the article, the authors discuss the problems with defining languages used for specific purposes as well as with defining the field that deals with researching and teaching these variations of language. The authors also present the current approaches to research and pedagogy which are being discussed in the literature of foreign language learning and teaching, among them, the rapprochement between the research on languages for specific purposes and discourse and interaction analysis, as well genre and intercultural studies. This broader study perspective should cause changes in foreign language teaching practice: teaching languages for specific purposes should be planned in a way that would enable language users to participate in the discourse community by developing, during language classes, effective discourse behaviours. In the second part of the article, the authors discuss the content of the 23rd volume of this periodical, entitled: Specialist variations of the language – 1. Research concepts and foreign language teaching practice.
W części I artykułu przedstawiono sposoby definiowania specjalistycznych odmian języków oraz dziedziny zajmującej się ich nauczaniem. Opisano również najnowsze kierunki badań i podejścia pedagogiczne, jakie zarysowały się w ostatnich latach w literaturze glottodydaktycznej. Do najważniejszych tendencji należy zbliżenie się refleksji nad kształceniem języków specjalistycznych do analizy dyskursu i interakcji oraz studiów genologicznych i interkulturowych. To znaczące poszerzenie perspektywy powinno wywołać również określone zmiany w praktyce pedagogicznej w kierunku kształcenia określonych zachowań dyskursywnych, które pozwolą użytkownikom języka właściwie funkcjonować w określonej wspólnocie dyskursywnej. W części II artykułu autorki omawiają treść 23. tomu niniejszego czasopisma zatytułowanego Specjalistyczne odmiany języka – 1. Koncepcje badawcze i praktyka glottodydaktyczna, zwracając uwagę na zawarte w publikowanych pracach kluczowe tezy i koncepcje.

Opis:
Not often do we encounter a specialized foreign language course at a university humanities department. However, why should foreign lan-guage students not be provided with practical knowledge which may be useful in future professional life? The article presents an experi-ment conducted with the participation of MA students of German studies at Warsaw University. The aim is to teach language skills, as well as convey professional knowledge in the CLIL formula, which is becoming more and more popular. It is consistent with requests of students themselves. Logistics is a useful introduction to various branches of the economy. Considering that the German language is becoming more and more important in business-related professions, the topics discussed in this course may be required in logistics, for-warding and other areas. In addition to traditional logistics topics, such as transport, storage and waste disposal, we also discuss topics such as business correspondence or negotiations and practice translations.

The university’s relations with the social and economic environment are becoming an increasingly important aspect of higher education, in addition to the university’s traditional missions. In addition to education and research, the so-called third mission of the university is developing, which includes relations with the business sector, the public sector and the non-governmental sector, i.e. the socio-economic environment. The goal of the University’s cooperation with employers is to share experiences and strengthen cooperation with entrepreneurs and employers. The latter can co-design teaching programs, conduct courses and workshops, organize internships or present their own solutions to various research problems. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to show the role and importance of foreign and specialized language teaching in the context of interdisciplinary studies oriented to the needs of the labour market. This is promoted by the study conducted within the framework of the project Language Barometer Łódź 2021.

Enseignement des langues de spécialité en Pologne et en France. Regards croisésL’article a pour objectif d’analyser les contextes d’enseignement des langues de spécialité en Pologne et en France. Nous examinerons les modalités de formation en langues de spécialité au niveau des écoles secondaires et supérieures en vue d’en extraire des traits spécifiques relatifs à chacun des milieux éducatifs en question. Nous mettrons ensuite en comparaison les résultats de l’analyse des contextes d’enseignement polonais et français afin d’identifier les éléments communs ou divergents des formations langagières à objectif professionnel qui sont proposées dans les deux pays en question.
Our presentation aims at analyzing Polish and French teaching contexts of trainings in languages for specific purposes. First, we will consider the modalities for trainings in languages for specific purposes at secondary school and high school levels in order to extract features specific for educational environment in each country.Then, we will compare the results of Polish and French teaching contexts analyses to identify common and divergent points of trainings in languages for professional (specific) purpose provided in Poland and France respectively.
Nauczanie języków specjalistycznych w Polsce i we Francji - perspektywa porównawczaCelem niniejszego tekstu jest analiza kontekstu nauczania języków specjalistycznych w Polsce i we Francji. W artykule omówione zostaną warunki kształcenia w zakresie języków specjalistycznych na poziomie szkół średnich i wyższych pod kątem specyficznych cech charakteryzujących obserwowane środowiska edukacyjne. Podjęta również zostanie próba porównania polskiego i francuskiego kontekstu nauczania tak, aby wyłonić podobieństwa i różnice istniejące w ofercie językowego kształcenia dla potrzeb zawodowych w obydwu wskazanych krajach.

Opis:
A certificate proving the holder’s proficiency in a foreign language for specific purposes (LSP) should guarantee that the person submitting such a document is able to perform specific professional tasks using the particular foreign language. Therefore, an examination measuring such competencies should meet certain requirements and have certain characteristics. What are the differences between testing languages for general and for specific purposes? Are these differences visible in existing certificate examinations? Do the language certificates issued on the basis of LSP examinations give employers a guarantee that the employee can handle professional tasks which demand the use of the foreign language in question? In an attempt to answer these queries, the article will outline the theoretical principles behind testing languages for specific purposes and try to compare the theory and practice through an analysis of several LSP exams available on the market. Reflecting on the observations, it will also try to determine why the reality is often so distant from the theoretical foundations.

The modern working world is characterized by increasingly complex external and internal pluri- and multilingualism, which poses growing challenges for professional communication. In order to be able to systematically capture this increasing complexity, a separate model is required. In this model, on the one hand, the individual languages and their linguistic varieties of external and internal multilingualism and, on the other hand, the first-, second- and foreign-language competencies of individual persons are entered in a matrix. In this way, multilingual settings of professions or workplaces as well as multilingual profiles of individual persons can be described in a differentiate manner and corresponding political and didactic measures can be taken.

Die berufliche Kommunikation im deutschen Sprachraum ist in dreifacher Hinsicht durch Vielfalt geprägt: Zum einen besteht in diesem Bereich eine innere Mehrsprachigkeit hinsichtlich verschiedener Fachsprachen, die innerhalb einzelner Berufe verwendet werden. Zum anderen ist hier zunehmend eine äußere Mehrsprachigkeit zu beobachten, da viele Berufstätige das Deutsche nicht als erste, sondern als zweite bzw. fremde Sprache gebrauchen und darüber hinaus das Englische als internationale Lingua franca Verwendung findet. Und nicht zuletzt zeigt die berufliche Kommunikation in deutscher Sprache mit Differenzierung, Dezentralisierung und Dynamisierung drei wichtige Entwicklungstendenzen, die zu einem Ausbau der fachsprachlichen Vielfalt in vielen beruflichen Bereichen beitragen. Der vorliegende Beitrag greift innere und äußere Mehrsprachigkeit sowie das Triple-D fachsprachlicher Vielfalt im Gegenwartsdeutschen auf und weist auf sprachpolitische und -didaktische Konsequenzen hin, die sich hieraus ergeben.
In the German speaking countries professional Communication shows diversity from three points of view: 1. internal multilingualism in relation to some languages for special purposes; 2. external multilingualism in relation to German and/or English as a foreign language; 3. tendency of differentiation, decentralization, and dynamization. The article shows their connections as well as their political and didactic implications.

The study outlines current migration situation which has contributed to the establishment of rapid border teams in EU member states. In the theoretical part, the author identifies key migration terms along with ESP (English for Specific Purposes) for the needs of newly created police unit. The practical part analyses Regulation of the Ministry of Interior of the Slovak Republic on Foreign Police Unit No. 37/2017 and a new Regulation (EU) 2016/1624 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 14 September 2016 on the European Border and Coast Guard. On the basis of an international research carried out at the Academy of the Police Force in Bratislava “Language Modules for Selected Police Services” (No. 165) the author identifies the language content syllabus for specific language training of rapid border teams to be deployed in Frontex joint operations.

This paper addresses the question of the specificity of professional (specialist) communication among graduates of the German Studies working in business services in Poland. The research results presented are based on the global results of the project “The Language Barometer of Lódz 2021. Employees in the Modern Business Services Sector.” The target group are employees of companies in the Polish business services sector and, at the same time, graduates of the Master’s degree programme in German at the University of Lódz. The research questions of the survey are primarily directed at the required foreign language skills of the target group, areas of application of foreign languages, the knowledge and specialist areas to be mastered, language training in the company and multilingualism in professional communication.

Opis:
The paper is motivated by the widely held view that LSP pedagogy should aim to develop students' dual competence, encompassing − on the one hand − their linguistic knowledge and skills, and − on the other − their professional competence including (elements of) specialist content knowledge and the skills necessary to effectively communicate in specific purpose settings. Consequently, assessment in LSP pedagogy should take into account not only students' linguistic competence, but also measure their ability to effectively and professionally perform communicative tasks typical of the target settings. The study examines how pre-experience undergraduate students at the University of Economics in Katowice perceive assessment of their professional communicative competence, including elements of specific purpose knowledge, by a Business English teacher. The findings suggest that the degree of acceptance for the assessment of dual competence in a university Business English course is very high; importantly, it increases with students' growing business awareness and content knowledge.

Opis:
Training teachers of languages for specific purposes is not an easy task, given the complexity of the process, distinctiveness of LSP vs. general language instruction, scarce time available in modern philology curricula and lack of provisions for practicum. However, with increasing popularity of LSP not only in the corporate sector with adults, but also at secondary level in vocational education, the demand for well-trained LSP teachers is going to soar. The present paper shows the specific nature of LSP teacher training and the important place that is occupied in the process by task-based methodology leading to teacher autonomy. The two cases of LSP teacher training implemented at Romance philology of Catholic University of Lublin and Applied Linguistics of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin exemplify how to develop teacher autonomy through integration of in-class instruction and fieldwork.

Opis:
Coraz więcej zagranicznych firm inwestuje w Polsce, co przyczynia się do rozpowszechnienia nauczania języka polskiego jako obcego w biznesie. Artykuł opisuje specyfikę kursów biznesowych na podstawie modelu glottodydaktycznego P. Gębala. Na tymże modelu została również przeprowadzona analiza błędów popełnianych przez nauczycieli w nauczaniu biznesowym. Niestety, wiele kursów biznesowych odbywa się bez uwzględnienia szczególnych potrzeb uczącego się, czyli dorosłego pracującego w Polsce. Bardzo często zdarza się również, że nauczyciele nie posiadają przygotowania teoretycznego do nauczania języków specjalistycznych, co skutkuje licznymi błędami popełnianymi w czasie prowadzenia zajęć biznesowych. Tezy artykułu oparte są na badaniach ankietowych, wywiadach oraz obserwacjach uczestniczących, a także na własnym doświadczeniu autorki jako lektora JPJO.
In the past years, the economic growth has encouraged many foreign companies to move their businesses to Poland which resulted in an increasing number of foreigners living and working in our country. Some of them not only decide to work here, but also to learn Polish language and culture, which leads to an increased demand for business Polish language courses. The article presents the characteristic of business Polish language courses according to the model of glottodidactics by P. Gębal. This model was also the base for the analysis of the mistakes the teachers make during such courses. Unfortunately, many business courses are taught with disregard to the special needs of the learner, who is an adult working in Poland. It also happens very often that the teachers do not have the theoretical preparation for teaching languages for specific purposes. The article is based on surveys, interviews, and observations. Also, the author herself is a teacher of Polish for business purposes.

Once a demand of the student movement of the 1960s, the call for more practical relevance in higher education is being expressed again in student surveys. This has gained importance across Europe, not least as a consequence of the implementation of the Bologna Reform. Alongside employability and competence orientation, practical orientation has become one of the central issues in the debate about the curricular focus of university programmes. This paper seeks to briefly outline the concepts behind the keywords employability, competence orientation and practice orientation and discuss how they relate to the traditional (self-)understanding of universities. On the basis of examples it will then consider what concrete contributions Applied Linguistics as an academic discipline (along with its sub-disciplines) can make to the practical orientation of degrees in languages.

Opis:
The article contributes to current discourses on the opportunities, challenges and limits for foreign and specialised language didactics in the context of the closer cooperations between Universities and the wider economic and social environment. It presents and discusses the background, origins, results and perspectives of the research project “The Language Barometer of Lodz 2021. Employees of the modern business services sector”. The research questions of the survey are primarily directed at the required foreign language skills of the target group, areas of application of foreign languages, the knowledge and specialist areas to be mastered, language training in the company, as well as the aspect of multilingualism in the context of professional communication. The paper will present and discuss the global results of the survey, and also provide a full package of anonymous raw data collected during the survey for possible further analysis and study. The data obtained in the survey can be used for projects and research initiatives on various aspects of specialised communication in an intercultural work environment, but may also find application in, among other things, the development or modification of curricula at different levels of learning, the creation of specialisation modules, language courses, workshops or educational materials.
