Opis:
The semantic loading of archaisms in Ukrainian translations of Danylo Bratkowskyi’s poems by Valerii Shewchuk is analyzed in the article. They are separated from another layer of outdated vocabulary – historicisms in modern language. Their belonging to different groups is indicated in terms of structure and content. Taking into account the structure of archaisms, we distinguish stylistic, morphological, word-formation, phonetic and lexical groups. Semantically we should consider that there are complete and superficial archaisms, so they perform different functions in the translated text and in the original text. In the publication attention is paid to the level of adequacy and equivalence of translated baroque poetry. The prospects of translation of the ancient text with the use of archaisms are determined. Among the words-realities in the Ukrainian versions of Bratkowskyi’s poems we identify historicisms and a small group of archaisms consonant with them, which either have synonymous equivalents in modern Ukrainian or had them not so long ago, in the 20th century. Very often this type of vocabulary refers to public positions, professions, household items, etc. In this case the technique of archaizing the text is fully justified, as it conveys the spirit of antiquity and reproduces the linguistic richness of the ancient kingdom of Poland, which consisted of several nations and which is no longer on the world map. The most common group are archaisms of the classical type, which are divided into subgroups by the nature of creation. In Ukrainian translations of Bratkowskyi we find their phonetic, morphological, word-forming and semantic variations. Regardless of the type of creation, all these obsolete words are used for a single purpose – imitation of the Baroque epoch, from which we are separated by three centuries. Word-forming and lexical archaisms predominate among them. Most of them perform the superficial function of archaizing the text without significantly changing its content. To the individual translation style we assign so-called pseudo-realities and pseudo-archaisms, which, thanks to the preserved transcription of words from the original transfer of Polish words to the Ukrainian lexical ground, gain an old-fashioned flavour. The number of such authorial interpretations is very significant, so they must be allocated to a separate group. Descriptive translation in this case would be most appropriate and equivalent to the original texts. It can be concluded, on the basis of the conducted research, that archaisms are one of the most numerous groups of vocabulary in Ukrainian translations of Danylo Bratkowskyi’s Polish language poetry. Phonetic and lexical (semantic) archaic groups predominate among them and are significantly widespread due to the translator’s creation of his own words that correspond to the Polish original definitions through transcription. We can define this individuality as a tendency for polonization of speech that is often characteristic of dialectal vocabulary.

The arlicle deals with the problem of determination of the associative and figurative structures of the poetic language with the extralingual factors. Based on the materiał of the functions of the names of kinship in the language of the Ukrainian poetry of the 20th century, the author analyzes two key models of the metaphorical use of these wordspoetisms with which the phenomena of ideologization of the poetic context are connected in generál and the new mythopoetics in particular. The use of the names of kinship in the structure of the poetisms-ideologemes is represented in eonnection with the processes of the development of the poetic and generál linguistic semantics of the names of kinship which render the meanings of “patriot”, “native”, “friendship”. The poetic functions of the genitive and comparative metaphors with the names of kinship háve been analyzed.

Badaniu poddano również system wartości w ukraińskiej przestrzeni poetyckiej. Szczególną uwagę zwrócono na językowe aspekty kreatywności artystów, które wyróżniają wizerunki kobiet wśród innych cennych wartości w społeczeństwie. Określono środki stylistyczne, za pomocą których wizerunek kobiety jest zróżnicowany w twórczości W. Bojki i innych mistrzów słowa artystycznego.
The article deals with the conceptualization of the moral values. They have been considered through the prism of the evolution of values from the times of an ancient Chinese philosophical thought to the heyday of modern Ukrainian philosophical ideas. The existence of the values in the Ukrainian poetic space has been also researched. The emphasis  has been placed on the linguistic aspects of creativity of artists, who distinguish the images of women among other valuable values in society. It has been determined, with the help of which language expressive means, a woman's image is differentiated in the works of V. Boyko and other masters of artistic word.

This study focuses on the translation of Vsevolod Nekrasov’s poetry into Czech. However, it also considers the more general question of whether it is possible to transpose poetry full of delicate humour, hidden allusions, codes and ciphers into another language in such a way that the reader would not be deprived of the aesthetic impression of the original. Nekrasov’s creative and playful poetry poses, at the same time, serious questions and contains hidden messages that should not be ignored by the translator either. The study also points out and demonstrates, using particular examples, that in the process of translation the translator must take the responsibility for the interpretation of the text and must “determine” it to certain extent. This subjective prism then becomes an indispensable part of the reception of translation in the target language area. Specifically, in case of Nekrasov’s poetry, the translator must, besides usual difficulties, face also other challenges, such as the translation of neologisms or uncommon realia, which form the basic elements of his verses.

Opis:
Bohdan Ihor Antonych was one of the most remarkable modernist Ukrainian poets of the twentieth century. He left an extraordinary lite rary legacy with just a handful of books of published poetry despite his premature death at the age of twenty-eight in 1937. He was a poet, literary critic, translator, and journalist. From the outset of his literary career, in the context of western Ukrainian literature, his poetry had a diff erent sound and texture to it. Antonych’s literary interests were unconventional for his milieu: he concerned himself with the metaphysical, philosophical, and metapoetic issues. The power of his accomplishment is that he restored the human need, suppressed by centuries of colonization, for metaphysical, non-political meditation on the meaning of life, eternity and art, rather than -- as it was in a previous Ukrainian literary canon -- in the name of national interests, where literature had to play a didactic role designed to amplify the patriotic feelings of a reader. Antonych mastered the poetic language of antithesis and paradoxes, and by using it he rises from the level of personal experience to that of a universal archetype.

The unpredictable world was closed in a quite predictable and tamed form. Yet, the present review focuses not only on the issues raised by the poems included in the volume, but also on the analysis of the poetic mechanisms employed by the author, the examination of the dialogue which Siwczyk establishes with other contemporary writers. Moreover, the reviewer attempts to situate the latest collection of the Silesian writer on the map of his previous poetic works.

The paper raises the question of the extent to which Wittgenstein’s philosophy can be read as a philosophy of culture. The answer aims at grasping the conceptual bonds between three aspects of Wittgenstein’s thought: first, his taking both language and thinking to be expressions of a ‘form of life’ (or culture); second, his taking philosophical theories to result from some disorders that occur in ‘language games’; and third, his critique and rejection of the scientific and technical civilization. The paper advances the thesis that the task of bringing words back from their metaphysical to their everyday use – recommended by Wittgenstein – can be understood as a critique of scientism and culture dominated by scientific and technical rationality.

This article compares the nonsense works of Lewis Carroll to the poetry of the canonical Hebrew poet Yona Wallach. Both writers present literary works which are not based on the logic of 'ordinary' reality, but rather on systems of unfamiliar, surreal and 'dreamlike' logic. However, Carroll's logical nonsense is famously comical and playful in nature. Unlike him, Yona Wallach's poetry is mostly regarded as 'serious', even tragic, with a 'doom-like' atmosphere hovering over it. Nonetheless, and precisely because of their considerable dissimilarity, the comparison between Yona Wallach and Lewis Carroll discloses their surprising similarity. In this artiel will examine two mechanisms in which they both play with the conventional meanings of words and use them incongruously, non-commonsensically.Throughout this article, Carroll reveals his serious and gloomy face whereas Wallach reveals her (hardly spoken of) logical and amused face. Thus, the contrasts between the comically playful accuracy of Carroll's work and Wallach's ambiguous and mostly "dark" poetry, sheds light on their respective mechanisms of signification and humor-making, in a manner indiscernible when each is treated in isolation.

Cognitive, therapeutic and educational values (and learning outcomes) presented in A Songbook for Children [Śpiewnik dla dzieci] by Maria Konopnicka multiply educational and therapeutic benefits, which is usually achieved by a set of repeated language and articulation exercises. It should be emphasized that the poet uses a beautiful poetic language that is tailored to the developmental needs of the child. What is more, even in the 21st century Konopnicka’s style of writing should be appreciated as it is so simple that makes a child repeat her songs easily and with pleasure. This is why, frequently repeated sequences of words may contribute to correct pronunciation.

The outline discusses Stanisław Barańczak’s fascination with Witold Wirpsza’s works. Its clearest symptom was his infection with Wirpsza’s ‘stylistic tissue’, which is something Barańczak himself admitted. This infection is clearly visible in the first three collections: Facial Corrections (Korekta twarzy), Without Stopping for Breath (Jednym tchem) and Morning Journal (Dziennik poranny). The key sources of references and inspirations for these collections were Wirpsza’s poems from the collection Superstitions (Przesądy) and the digressional poem Faeton. The article demonstrates how Stanisław Barańczak presents the readers with a specific ‘key to Wirpsza’ in his works of literary criticism. According to the author of The Diffident and the Proud (Nieufni i zadufani), literary criticism was unable to cope with Wirpsza. What pushed the young poet from Poznan to remodel the reading of Wirpsza’s poetry and to make significant changes to contemporary poetic tendencies was the collection Superstitions (Przesądy) published byWirpsza in 1966, one year after his essay collection Game of Meaning (Gra znaczeń). Barańczak assigned Wirpsza to the language poetry movement. In his later accounts of reading, Barańczak the critic suggested that there was a ‘deep gap’ between Wirpsza’s achievements from various periods of his work. He claimed that Wirpsza was first a political poet, and he wanted to perceive the later stages of the life of the ‘poet-idol’, generally, as undergoing ‘rapid and dramatic changes’: one of the socialist realist poets, experimenter, a difficult poet, original theoretician accused of creating ‘art for art’s sake’ and ‘excessive hermeticism’ and finally an ‘emigrant’ who turned out to be a political writer, only to become, finally and unexpectedly, a religious poet.

Remarks on language and poetry in the poems of Mirosław Dzień Miroslaw Dzień is perceived as a metaphysical poet. The subject matter of his poems frequently oscillates around existential problems and touches on various religious issues (including eschatological ones). An ambivalent view of language emerges from Dzien’s poems. The language used there serves to capture different aspects of reality and preserve various phenomena. On the other hand, however, it does not allow the poet to address the most important issues and articulate his innermost thoughts. In this context, it is the poetry that is the higher form of communication, though it also has great limitations. This is because everything that matters most is contained in silence.
