Opis:
This paper reviews objectivism and constructivism: the two educational ideologies which underlie different language teaching methods, applied in the classrooms for decades. It reflects on some marked differences among the existing language theories and practices within the two traditions and their impact on early language education. The authors emphasize the changes in the focus of the educational paradigms and the need of working methodologies and classroom practices that are in line with the contemporary requirements of modern education. A shift from learning that to learning how has been observed. Young students should be able to have new experiences in a new language by doing things as autonomous learners within a group that has established a positive learning environment. The focus of research should be on developing and applying effective, age-appropriate approaches which will facilitate the language learning of children and enhance their overall physical and psychological development.

According to the 2002 National Census of Population and Housing, 48 737 people declared Belarusian nationality. Most of the Byelorussian language users, which equals to 39 898 people, inhabit Podlasie. The national structure of Podlasie has undergone major changes. As a result of the assimilation processes over the years, the number of Belarusians in Podlasie has drastically declined. The official policy of the Polish government guarantees Polish citizens belonging to national and ethnic minorities the freedom to maintain and develop their own language. It also provides national and ethnic minorities the right to establish their own educational institutions. There are elementary schools, gymnasiums and high schools in Podlasie where Byelorussian language is taught as an additional subject. According to the data provided by the Bialystok Board of Education, in the school year 2008/2009 3225 students learned the Byelorussian language. Moreover, the Byelorussian language is being used in academic education. There are Belarusian Language Departments in three Polish universities: the University of Warsaw, the University in Bialystok and the University of M. Curie-Sklodowska in Lublin. Byelorussian language is also the language of mass media; there are newspapers being published in Podlasie in the Byelorussian language, as well as radio broadcasts are being aired from Bialystok and Warsaw. Unfortunately, the majority of the Byelorussian language users do not consider this language

The aim of the article is to outline the foundations of critical foreign language didactics, which refers to critical and post-Foucauldian discourse analysis as well as dispositive analysis. The first part of the paper forms a reconstruction of the enmeshment of vocational language education in a number of contexts (political, migrational, and integrative). Constituting a transformative variant of language didactics and examining vocational language education, critical foreign language didactics will be perceived as a research program pertaining to the reflection on education and pedagogical activity (under the framework of critical pedagogy), teaching and learning (from the standpoint of the critical trend in general didactics), and language education and its specificity within teaching and learning particular languages (in the context of foreign language didactics). The final part of the paper will present methodological implications by indicating potential directions for – and levels of – vocational language education analysis. It will also offer an attempt at their further clarification aimed at a critical analysis of subject formation and forms of subjectification that draws from the dispositive analysis.

Opis:
In Vision 2020, Malaysia aspires to become a fully developed country by the year 2020 (The Malaysian Dream: Vision 2020). Later, the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) was announced in August 1995 to spearhead a number of nationwide IT projects that are intended to transform major sectors of Malaysian society including education using IT. One of the IT projects that was implemented was the Smart School project. Among its objectives was to prepare Malaysian citizens for the information age through an innovative education delivery process. This study specifically investigates teachers’ use of computers in teaching English as a second language (ESL) in a public school in Malaysia. It examines teachers’ attitudes, the challenges that they faced in using computers in teaching English, and their suggestions in order to overcome these challenges. Feedback gathered from questionnaires show that they faced many challenges that demotivate them from using computers in the classroom. The results of the study suggest that there must be strong support of both the instructional and administrative aspects of IT in the school so that teachers will be able to embrace IT fully in teaching English in their classroom.

Opis:
Phonetic education is presented in this contribution as a pedagogical approach and didactic method for teaching and acquiring phonetic-phonological competence in the foreign language classroom at school. To develop such competence, we should overcome the school practice that still today does not seem to deviate from the listen-and-repeat method: the teaching of articulatory phonetics is proposed as a method and tool for learning based on self-consciousness. By discovering the sound dimension of language, and the bodily reality through which it is realised, the student undergoes an educational experience based on perception. The formative value of a phonetic education is framed in the perspective of body pedagogy, in line with an inclusive and democratic approach to language education.

The goal of the paper is to explore the life-long specificity of the educational process, with special attention devoted to a vast collection of the psycholinguistic and ecolinguistic variables which orchestrate one's education. The dynamics and complexity of the foreign language education, in the context of the Polish university, ask for the twofold psycholinguistic treatment, that is, for the intraorganism strategic competence and behaviour; and for the interpersonal intervention, in the form of the educational offer and individually designed classroom work. The study proposes a redefinition of the learning process, which may constitute the starting point of a revised methodological framework in the context of the university foreign language education.

Even though distance learning intensified the tools, unfortunately, school practice shows that it is used as an analogue of analog instruments. The student is still not the creator, but only recreates the content learned in the lesson. There is not enough space in the classroom – stationary and remote office – to recover digital tools. The introduction of this type of activity is not easy – it is introduced with the need to fully use the area of application, methods, it also gives student and teachers development. The paper deals with one of the methods that enable creative and creative thinking – a project and how to implement it in Polish lessons. In the first part, the author presented a theoretical approach (research to date, strength) along with a methodical commentary and the purposefulness of using the method of working in the lessons. The details of the experience of the project and the benefits of its implementation were detailed. The author, as a working practitioner, shows in her observations on the specifics of the subject, corrections, possible modifications and supplements to existing studies. The second part is practical – it shows how to effectively implement a project at school, as well as examples of student work with an overview. The emphasis is on the appropriate sparring tools and what to consider in the planning plan. It shows where to look for inspiration and good practices, which can be expected for young teachers. The paper is not a compendium of knowledge about Polish studies projects. The most important issues, questions, questions that arise in connection with remote education and presents examples of – often proven – solutions. Non-standard observations are the added value of the text, look at the theory from the point of view of the everyday teacher at school.

The article’s theme concerns challenges encountered in the 21st century in the course of language communicative education within the scope of Polish as a native language. The author expresses conviction that socialisation process does not substitute for education, and therefore one of the paramount purposes/aims of language education within the scope of native language is to cater to the language-communicative needs of students stemming from cultural transformation taking place in the contemporary world. New tasks that a Polish language teacher needs to face are developing the so-called new communicative competency which facilitates communicative acts in media-dominated world of today, including digital media. The said tasks also involve counteracting the lowering of verbal communication standards, particularly the cases of verbal aggression and primitive vocabulary.

This article proposes criteria for testing university students’ strategic competency in speaking. The roots of the derivation of the four criteria and their indicators is the demands for the future specialists – university students, the essence and distinctive peculiarities of strategic competence, the specificity of speaking as a skill and as an activity, the modern tendencies in evaluation processes. Hence, such criteria with the corresponding indicators for evaluation were established: cognitive, communicative, goal-seeking, educational-compensatory. Studying specific tasks for assessment and developing tools of evaluating strategic competence in writing and interaction activities open new prospects for further educational research.

Is a text for the modern young man a communication anachronism? In this era of communication practices based on fast, informative or ludic transmission, competencies related to the necessity to create coherent, effective and correct texts are disappearing. This article presents a diagnosis of high school students’ communication skills in this area with reference to the educational documents (Core Curriculum) and selected writings – from student work and external examinations. After analyzing the results there are a number of conclusions that can be drawn about the school educational practices. Firstly, centrally proposed programs do indeed raise the awareness of the need for certain text exponents in different genres, but analytical operations associated with the analysis of fragments of texts do not contribute to student’s thinking about the text as a coherent whole. Secondly, the emphasis on recreating a particular structure of the text in the genre (which is most likely to appear during an exam), contributes to a certain mechanical behavior in that regard.

This study attempts to explore the relationships between personality traits, loneliness, and university students’ EFL (English as a foreign language) achievement. A sample consisting of 137 freshman students from two universities participated in this study. Statistical results showed that conscientiousness was positively related to EFL achievement, while neuroticism was negatively related to EFL achievement. Statistical results also revealed that students who achieved poorer EFL results tended to consider themselves to be lonelier. In addition, loneliness was also found to have significant negative relationships with three personality traits including extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Taken together, this study would help to contribute to the understanding of personality, loneliness, and EFL achievement in university students.
