Opis:
The bedrock opoka has been lately reported as an appropriate reactive media for onsite wastewater treatment systems due to its high phosphorus (P) sorption capacity. However, variations on its chemical composition may affect its reactivity with P, therefore leading to a variable P removal effi ciency. In this paper, the P-sorption capacity of three different types of opoka from the region of Miechów, Poland, is reported. According to the silica and carbonate content, opoka samples were classifi ed as light--weight and heavy-weight opoka. When heated over 900°C, opoka showed a very high P-sorption capacity that was well correlated to its Ca content. P-sorption isotherms from batch experiments with an artifi cial P solution were plotted and fi tted to the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. The Freundlich isotherm appeared to model better the P-sorption of light opoka and the Langmuir isotherm of heavy opoka, suggesting different dominating mechanisms of P-sorption by light and heavy opoka.

Opis:
Natural clay has been considered as a potential absorbent for removing pollutants from water and waste water. Nonetheless, the effective application of clay for water treatment is limited due to small surface area and presence of net negative surface charge, leading to it low adsorption capacity. The absorption capacity was boosted via intercalation of CaO derived from snail shell (SS). The methylene blue sorption potential, PZC, and the surface area of unmodified clay sample were substantially enhanced by the intercalation process. The process of sorption of MB from solution was analyzed using five different isotherm models (Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin, Harkins-Jura, and Halsey isotherm equations). The value of the Langmuir monolayer sorption capacity qm (mg/g) increased from 50.12 to 88.71, PZC values increased from 4.50 to 7.40, and the surface area (m2/g) value increased from 27 m2/g to 123 m2/g after the intercalation process. The experimental data were fitted into two kinetic models: Lagergren pseudo-first order and the chemisorptions pseudo-second order. It was observed that chemisorptions pseudo-second order kinetic model described the sorption process with high coefficients of determination (r2) better than pseudo first other kinetic models. The modification caused no change in the clay surficial microstructure but increased the lattice spacing of the clay framework.

Thermodynamics and adsorption studies were conducted with a dye of rhodamine-B on natural diatomite. Adsorption of the dye was investigated with an initial dye concentration at pH 8±0.2, 303, 313 and 323 K. The adsorption experiments were carried out isothermally at three different temperatures. The Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models were used to describe the equilibrium data and the results were discussed in details. The kinetic data agreed with the pseudo-first order model with rate constants (k2) in the range of 3.05–1.59.10–1 g/mg min. The thermodynamic parameters such as standard free energy, entropy change and enthalpy were calculated for natural diatomite. These values showed that adsorption of rhodamine-B on natural diatomite was a spontaneous and endothermic process.

This work involves synthesis of activated carbon from Iraqi date palm seeds as agricultural wastes using kehdrawy palm seeds. The preparation was conducted by chemical activation method using ZnCl2 as an activator. The synthesized activated carbon (AC) was characterized by different analytical and spectroscopic methods. This involves using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), flourier transformation infrared (FTIR), ash content, adsorption capacity, the percentage of humidity and the point zero charge (PZC). The activity of the prepared activated carbon was investigated by following the removal of reactive yellow 145 dye (RY 145) from the aqueous solutions. For a comparison a sample of non- activated carbon (NAC) was used in the same process. From the obtained results it was found that AC was more efficient in dye removal in comparison with NAC under the same conditions

Sorption properties of fine-grain mixtures of mineral waste proposed for construction of separation screens in landfill sites have been examined. The removal of heavy metals by the mixtures analysed was evaluated by the static batch method. It was found that they characterize by high ability to remove heavy metals at the level of over 99%, even with high contents of these elements. The sorption parameters have been determined based on the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms. The alkaline character of some components of mixtures provides stabilization of pH, preventing removal of heavy metals to the environment in response to contact a barrier with acid solutions.

Opis:
The study of sorption of dye Acid Yellow 36 on SAC (sludge-based activated carbon) was conducted. For this purpose, anaerobically digested and dewatered sewage sludge was dried at 105ºC to constant weight. Next this sludge was milled to a particle with a diameter of 0.5-1.0 mm and subjected to chemical activation by hydrogen peroxide. After oxidation process the sludge was subjected to thermal transformation in a muffle furnace at 600ºC. In this way obtained a powder activated carbon based on activated sludge (so-called SAC). Based on the results of the study the most favorable parameters of sorption process was achieved as follows: pH value equaled to 2.5 and reaction time equaled to 30 minutes. The linearized forms of Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms showed that the highest value of correlation factor was obtained in the case of Langmuir model. However, in this case, the negative value of constant isotherm was achieved. Therefore, it can be assumed that more accurately in this case is the Freundlich model or other model which was not examined during that studies.
SAC - czyli „sludge-based activated carbon”).

Opis:
Adsorption of orange II, methyl orange and methylene blue from aqueous solutions on three carbon materials was studied. The first material for studies was the microporous activated carbon obtained from sulfonated styrene- divinylbenzene resin (AC-SDVB), the second – ordered mesoporous carbon obtained from phenol-formaldehyde resin (OMC-PF) and the third – commercial micro-mesoporous activated carbon from Chemviron Carbon (AC-F400). Adsorption isotherms of the above-mentioned dyes on the carbon materials were studied under laboratory conditions at 25 C. The experimental data was described using the well-known Langmuir, Freundlich and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherm equations. On the basis of the correlation coefficient (R2) value, it was demonstrated that the Langmuir equation best described this data. The maximum adsorbed amounts for the three dyes were determined. The highest value was obtained for AC-SDVB: 625 mg/g for orange II and about 500 mg/g for methyl orange and methylene blue. These values were approximately five times higher than the maximum adsorption values for individual dyes on OMC-PF and AC-F400 (maximum adsorption values were about 100 mg/g). The difference in the effectiveness of dye adsorption on the carbon materials tested was the result of a much more developed porous structure of carbon AC-SDVB, compared to other two carbons. The specific surface area of AC-SDVB was 2 480 m2/g, 660 m2/g – for OMC-PF and 1 260 m2/g – for AC-F400. In addition, the values of standard characteristic numbers for activated carbons, methylene number and iodine number, were also evaluated. The highest value of both the methylene number, equal to 30 cm3, and the iodine number of 1 900 mg/g were obtained for AC-SDVB. In conclusion, some of the porous carbon materials obtained from polymers, characterized by excellent structural parameters, are particularly efficient in adsorption of dyes from aqueous solutions.
Badano adsorpcję trzech wybranych barwników organicznych (oranż II, oranż metylowy i błękit metylenowy) z roztworów wodnych na trzech materiałach węglowych. Pierwszym był mikroporowaty węgiel aktywny otrzymany z żywicy styrenowo-dwuwinylobenzenowej (AC-SDVB), drugim – uporządkowany węgiel mezoporowaty otrzymany z żywicy fenolowo-formaldehydowej (OMC-PF), a trzecim – handlowy mikro-mezoporowaty węgiel aktywnym firmy Chemviron Carbon (AC-F400). Powierzchnia właściwa węgla AC-SDVB wynosiła 2480 m2/g, węgla OMC-PF – 660 m2/g, a węgla AC-F400 – 1260 m2/g. Ponadto wyznaczono wartości standardowych liczb charakteryzujących węgle aktywne – liczbę metylenową i liczbę jodową.

Agricultural waste products including sunflower seed hulls, pumpkin seed shells, walnut shells and peanut shells were used as low-cost adsorbents for the removal of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol (TCP) from aqueous solutions. The effects of adsorbent dosage, pH and ionic strength on the adsorption of TCP were investigated. The results showed that the adsorption of TCP was pH dependent and increased upon increasing the ionic strength of the solution. The adsorption kinetics was found to follow a pseudo-second order kinetics. The equilibrium adsorption data were fitted to the Langmuir, Freundlich and Sips isotherms and the best results were achieved with the Freundlich model. The desorption of TCP using deionized water, water/methanol mixture or 5% sodium hydroxide was also studied. The results suggest that the tested materials may be used as an effective adsorbents without any treatment or any other modification for removal of TCP from the aqueous medium.

Secondly, attained nanoparticles were characterized by the Fourier transform infrared, X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller, vibrating sample magnetometer, and zeta-sizer devices/methods. Finally, detailed adsorption experiments were performed to remove hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) from aqueous media by synthesized nanoparticles. Mean size and specific surface area of synthesized nanoparticles were about 15 nm and 89.5 m²/g, respectively. The highest adsorption capacity among used adsorbents (Fe₃O₄, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂, Fe₃O₄@SiO₂@L) was attained by Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles and it was determined that adsorption capacity of the other two adsorbents was too low when compared to the Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles. Optimum conditions for Cr(VI) adsorption by Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles were: pH, 3; temperature, 55°C; contact time, 90 min; adsorbent concentration, 0.5 g/l and initial Cr(VI) concentration 10 mg/l. Under these conditions, adsorption capacity and removal percentage of Cr(VI) were found to be 33.45 mg/g and 88%, respectively.

Adsorption studies were conducted to assess the feasibility of ferric hydroxide-based material for treatment of highly arsenic-contaminated effluents. The experiments were performed in a batch adsorption regime using a synthetic aqueous solution. The contact time between arsenic ions and the adsorbent, initial concentration of arsenic in treated solution, temperature of solution and adsorbent dose had a significant effect on the adsorption performance in the system. Both the mechanism of the process involved and the rate of As(III) and As(V) adsorption were analyzed based on pseudo-firstand pseudo-second order kinetic models. The adsorption data at constant temperature were described by the Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm equation, and the theoretical adsorption capacity of ferric hydroxide was determined to be 43.75 mg/g and 44.04 mg/g for arsenic(III) and (V), respectively. The estimated thermodynamic parameters, including changes in free energy, enthalpy and entropy, revealed that the adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic under applied experimental conditions.

A series of activated bio-carbons has been obtained by physical activation of residues after supercritical extraction of blackberries, raspberries and blackcurrants. The effects of different temperatures of activation and different starting materials on the physicochemical and sorption properties of the bio-carbon samples obtained were evaluated. The physicochemical properties of the activated bio-carbons were characterized by elementary analysis, low-temperature nitrogen sorption and Boehm titration. All materials were tested as adsorbents of pollutants from gas (nitrogen dioxide) and liquid (iodine, methylene blue) phase. The sorption properties of the activated bio-carbons were tested at 23°C. The materials obtained were activated bio-carbons of surface area ranging between 303 and 442 m2/g and showing basic character of the surface. The content of elemental carbon in the obtained samples was in the range of 73.4-82.1 wt. %. The maximum adsorption capacities of the materials towards nitrogen dioxide were 65 mg/g, methylene blue -207 mg/g, and iodine 1001 mg/g. According to the adsorption tests towards nitrogen dioxide, the sorption capacities of the adsorbents studied were increased if a mixture of nitrogen dioxide and air had a humidity of 70 %. The mechanism of methylene blue adsorption involved the formation of adsorptive multilayer. The most effective adsorbent of organic and inorganic pollutants proved to be the activated bio-carbon obtained from the residues after supercritical extraction of blackcurrants.

Opis:
The potential of rice husks powder (RHP), for the removal of Congo red dye from aqueous solution was investigated. Batch adsorption studies were conducted and various parameters such as contact time, adsorbent dosage, initial dye concentration, pH and temperature were studied to observe their effects in the dye adsorption process. The optimum conditions for the adsorption of CR onto the adsorbent (RHP) was found to be: contact time (100 min) pH (10.0) and temperature (303 K) for an initial dye concentration of 50 mg/l and adsorbent dose of 1.0 g respectively. The experimental equilibrium adsorption data fitted best and well to the Freundlich Isotherm model for both dyes adsorption. The maximum adsorption capacity was found to be 33.88 mg/g for the adsorption of CR dye. The kinetic data conformed to the pseudo second order kinetic model. Thermodynamic quantities such as Gibbs free energy (ΔGº), enthalpy (ΔHº) and entropy (ΔSº) were evaluated and the negative values of ΔGº, ΔHº and ΔSº obtained indicate the spontaneous and exothermic nature of the adsorption process.

Opis:
The possibilities of using a natural sorbent – peat for the wastewater treatment of ammonium ions and phosphates discharged from runoff into natural reservoirs at high concentrations were investigated. The peat of from the Vereshchytsya-Yanovske deposit of Ukraine of two depths: lowland and upland, was studied. It was established that the lowland samples of peat have higher sorption properties to the investigated pollutants from the aquatic environment than the upland ones. A greater moisture loss in the lowland peat species was observed, as well as the major part of the plant fibers in its structure, which explains its sorption properties. Due to the high content of humic substances, the extraction of cations from the water by peat can occur due to the ion exchange. The adsorption isotherms of both ammonium and phosphate ions on the top and lowland peat species of the Vereshchytsya-Yanovske deposit were constructed and presented. The adsorption isotherm obtained in the experimental studies was used to mathematically establish the isotherm equation, using the Langmuir and Freundlich models to describe the equilibrium of the sorption processes under study. The degree of appropriation of linear equations to the experimental data was evaluated on the basis of the deterministic coefficient, which enabled to determine that in each case the Langmuir equations describe the adsorption isotherms more adequately.
