Opis:
This review paper is an attempt of a general outline of the Czech history (for the whole Crown of Bohemia) from the perspective of Wroclaw, not of Prague, which is justified by the particular role of the Silesian city, which at that time rose to the role of the second to Prague capital of the state. The article is also an attempt to counter the axiology present in Czech historiography, which accentuates the Hussite period. Such “revolutionary” vision of the history of the state led to a peculiar anomaly – the royal power of Sigismund diminished almost entirely, like if the state of Bohemia ceased to be a monarchy. The present paper is also an attempt to bring back into the awareness of historians the Habsburg period in the Czech history (1438–1457), which was longer than the 13 years of the rule of king George of Podebrady (1458–1471), yet it disappears in the general view of the past. The result is the myth of Habsburg assumption of the throne of Bohemia in 1526, while it should be described as the return of the Austrian dynasty to this throne.

Opis:
The paper presents preliminary results of research on the crown chancery of Ladislaus IV Vasa based on 12 books of inscription of the Crown Metrica (Metrica Regni), which reflect one particular aspect of the chancery’s work, namely recording the acts issued by the Office of the King. The offices of chancellor and deputy chancellor were held consecutively by six persons, most prominently by J. Zadzik, P. Gembicki, and J. Ossoliński. The chanceries had retained their modus operandi since the reign of Sigismund III. Every new deputy chancellor took staff members over from the departing chancellor. With time, small groups of royal secretaries in the chanceries grew in importance, the volume of recorded documents decreased, and more documents were made in Polish (14%) as compared to the dominant Latin. Anyway, throughout the reign of Ladislaus IV the chancery created a total of 70000 documents, being most active during the Diet’s sessions

Opis:
Established under the Henrician Articles of 1573, the institution of Council of the Senate was supposed to be a standing advisory body to the rulers of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Over the first few decades of its existence, the monarchs did not respect the obligation to appoint resident senators as the Council’s members. This changed only in 1607, as a result of a conflict between the king and the estates and the Rebellion of Sandomierz – the events that mobilised the nobility to enforce the monarch to observe the law in this respect. Since the beginning of his reign, Ladislaus IV Vasa fairly readily convened meetings of the Council, at which its members expressed their opinions on the current problems. The deliberations were usually about the state’s foreign policy, the functioning and internal security of the state, the affairs of war and peace, the military and the treasury, the king’s or the royal family’s private affairs, the Commonwealth’s feoffs, and matters related to private affairs of members of the power elite. Resulting from the monarch’s actions that did not win popularity in the nobility-dominated society, the Chamber of Deputies started with time perceive the Council as an institution detrimental to the state’s interest. The Chamber consequently extort from the king and the senators the duty to read out the reports on the senatus consilia at the diet (sejm) forum. Consequently, the upper chamber’s position was weakened and the Council of the Senate politicised – a process that directly affected Poland-Lithuania’s political system, vastly contributing to its degeneration.

Opis:
The origin and the course of the criminal activity of Krzysztof Stanisław Janikowski, one of the most famous forgers of documents in the history of the Rzeczpospolita in the period prior to the partitions have not been fully examined yet. This article presents the background and family connections of the 17th century swindler, the circumstances which led him to crime, including a long-lasting economic conflict with the Town Council and the burghers of Gdansk, which eventually led his family to bankruptcy. A debt spiral, prevaricating in front of various judicial instances, forced marriages, robberies, beatings and assassinations constituted the resources frequently used by the relatives of the forger (including Stanislaw Janikowski, his father, and his eldest brother – Jan Stanislaw Janikowski). The latter even made a career as an official and politician – he became a town councillor of Tczew, a member of Parliament and a deputy to the Radom Tribunal. Living beyond his means led to his estate being taken over by a family of burghers from Gdansk – the Pusches. Fighting for the legacy of his father and other estates, Krzysztof Stanislaw Janikowski turned to forgery. He even falsified the documents from the royal chancery. It was the king and his officials who protected him against the severity of the law long before he revealed to the public his extensive forgery activity.

Opis:
The article deals with the fate of the relics of Saint Władysław donated in 1585 by the Polish queen Anna Jagiellonka to the Jesuit college in Pułtusk. They were handed over from the royal treasury as evidence of gratitude for the education of Andrzej Batory - nephew of King Stephen I. Later the members of the Waza dynasty: princess Anna Katarzyna (1634) and king Władysław IV Waza (1635), fond homage to these relics. At that time he also gave them a silver reliquary as a gift. After the suppression of the Jesuits, the fate of the relics was unknown. Artifacts connected associated with them were found in the church of Saint Peter and Paul in Pułtusk in 2016. Research was unable to confirm that 7 of the oldest parts of a skull came from Saint Władysław`s skull which is now kept in Györ (lack of the DNA in the parts from Pułusk). Later, it was confirmed that these artifacts venerated in Pułtusk were relics of Saint Władysław. On the basis of the source analysis and comparison of the size of herms and pillows the author fixed that this herm, which was kept in Diocesan Museum in Płock, known as herm Saint Maurycy`s herm is in fact the herm donated to the Pułtusk`s Jesuits by Władysław IV in 1635 on Saint Władysław`s relics.

Opis:
