Opis:
The Internet of Things is changing the approach to data transmission, protocol design and network services. The challenge faced by designers of IoT solutions is to determine the scalability of a given technology, with a particular emphasis placed on unlicensed frequency bandwidth (ISM) transmission in highly urbanized areas. Because the design and implementation of a wireless network for the Internet of Things, relying on each of the presented technologies, is expensive and time consuming, it must be preceded by a performance assessment based on computer simulations. The literature contains various approaches to modeling the mechanisms of the MAC layer of LoRa technology and to its implementation in LoRaWAN networks. The article provides an overview of major LoRa MAC network simulators. It presents and comments on the most important research results obtained by the authors of the aforementioned software.

Opis:
A key role in the development of smart Internet of Things (IoT) solutions is played by wireless communication technologies, especially LPWAN (Low-Power Wide-Area Network), which are becoming increasingly popular due to their advantages: long range, low power consumption and the ability to connect multiple edge devices. However, in addition to the advantages of communication and low power consumption, the security of transmitted data is also important. End devices very often have a small amount of memory, which makes it impossible to implement advanced cryptographic algorithms on them. The article analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of solutions based on LPWAN communication and reviews platforms for IoT device communication in the LoRaWAN (LoRa Wide Area Network) standard in terms of configuration complexity. It describes how to configure an experimental LPWAN system being built at the Department of Computer Science and Telecommunications at Poznan University of Technology for research related to smart buildings.

Opis:
Internet of Things devices that send small amounts of data do not need high bit rates as it is the range that is more crucial for them. The use of popular, unlicensed 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands is fairly legally enforced (transmission power above power limits cannot be increased). In addition, waves of this length are very difficult to propagate under field conditions ( e.g. in urban areas). The market response to these needs are the LPWAN (Low Power WAN) type networks, whose main features are far-reaching wireless coverage and low power measurement end-nodes that can be battery powered for months. One of the promising LPWAN technologies is the LoRa WAN, which uses a publicly available 868 MHz band (in Europe) and has a range of up to 20 km. This article presents how the LoRa WAN network works and describes the installation of the research and measurement infrastructure in this technology which was built in the Gdańsk area using the Academic Computer Center TASK network infrastructure. The methodology and results of the qualitative and performance studies of the constructed network with the use of unmanned aircraft equipped with measuring devices for remote collection of environmental data are also presented. The LoRaWAN TASK has been designed to support the development of other research projects as an access infrastructure for a variety of devices. Registered users can attach their own devices that send specific metrics that are then collected in a cloud-based database, analyzed and visualized.
