The article offers a critical review of The Gift of Languages. Paradigm Shift in U.S. Foreign Language Education by Fabrice Jaumont & Kathleen Stein-Smith, published by TBR Books in 2019. The book, fitting in the general category of instruction manuals and motivational materials, has been written in support of the cause of the advocates of the paradigm shift in foreign language learning in the United States. Focusing on the need to expand the L2 skills among US elementary, high school, and college students by means of the systematic implementation of two-way Dual-Language Immersion programs in K-12 and secondary public education, the monograph contributes to the mission of the Center for the Advancement of Language, Education and Communities. The CALEC, a non-profit organization with international membership and worldwide reach, focuses on promoting multilingualism and cross-cultural understanding by supporting language communities in creating programs of education in languages and cultures. The present article offers a review of this important, albeit popular, publication as a document testifying to the transformations of the American culture in the Age of Globalization.

The Macuxi and Wapixana languages are the most well-known indigenous languages in the state of Roraima, among Taurepang, Yanomami, etc. They are co-official languages in the municipalities of Bonfim and Cantá. Despite this, both languages are considered in danger of extinction. This paper examines the particular case of these two Brazilian indigenous languages, taking as a starting point the actions already implemented that aim at revitalizing and maintaining them. Radio programs that were produced for spreading their use and learning of those languages are taken as a case study. These actions are considered while discussing points related to the possibility or not of a reverse language shift process which affects those two languages. Some reflections end the discussion with a non-exhaustive list of complementary actions that focus on the vitality of these languages more than the factors that put them in danger.

Opis:
The lasting traces of Czech immigration to Texas and the once prominent immigrant community lead to the cemeteries. The purpose of this study is to show how to read Czech cemetery data in Texas from the 1860s to the 1950s in order to understand the immigrants’ integration and contact with their German neighbors and the dominant Anglo-American society. To immigrants in the middle of the 19th century, Texas offered land and freedom of movement. But the reasons to return home outweighed those to stay for some of the earliest immigrants who were unable to align themselves with networks established by the German immigrants who preceded them. Those who followed the pioneers lived within interethnic social structures that they gradually abandoned in favor of the ethnocentric Czech community. Language choices, the interplay of Czech and English, and the endurance of the Czech language in tombstone inscriptions yield synchronic and diachronic data whose analysis and interpretation reveal sociolinguistic networks of immigrants, rules of social cohesion and ethnic identity.

Deconstructionism
Language shift. Overview
Political correctness

Opis:
Deconstructionism teaches us, that power lies within language, or rather that power decides, what language is supposed to mean. The old question asked in Alice in Wonderland: „Who decides, what words mean?“ builds up to the discrepancy in any language between the individual speaker’s intention and his or her position in the political power hierarchy. In recent decades calls for a more humane language have arisen, giving birth to movements of political correctness in the Western hemisphere, making it an issue of globalisation being fairly paired with left-wing ideology, making everyday conversation a subject of critique, calling for normative changes in language and ultimately facing the same question everywhere: Does it in fact help? This paper will shed light on the empirical linguistic knowledge we possess on the connection between form and content, going back to De Saussure and following the discourse of language and power in an historical manner, thus taking a hard look at the theoretical background of the dynamics of power and language, building a chronology of deconstructivist theorists like Derrida, Foucault, Bourdieu, and Barthes. These theories will be paralleled with the so-called linguistic turn from its beginning to the nowadays so popular Neo-Whorfian approach. Finally the deconstructivist method will be put in contrast to what we know about the connection between language on action following John Austin, circling back to the postmodern discursive approach known in everyday life: The language policing of everyday conversations by individual speakers, representing the deconstructivist movement, comparing it to the empirical data about language and culture, the named and the unnamed, empowerment and the mechanics of language shifting that were subject to studies already more than a hundred years ago, focusing on the shift of meaning and tabooing of vocabulary, dissecting what critics of political correctness call the „euphemism treadmill“, building up to the effects of political correctness we have come to experience so far. The goal is to finally answer the question, whether language policing and the growing public attention to the use of language do have an egalitarian effect on reality.

Opis:
The article presents the results of the newest research of the contemporary Polish language. Combined with the author’s own findings, it summarizes the changes in the newest Polish language. The author emphasizes the new emerging research fields: the functioning of the Polish language outside Poland, Polish as a foreign/second language, and teaching Polish as a foreign language. In her presentation of how the extralinguistic reality influences the language, she mainly focuses on the vocabulary changes. Among these changes there are the rapid increase in the number of neologisms and neosemantisms. These new lexical items often perform the expressive function which is when they become the source of language brutalization and vulgarization. This process is correlated with the simplification of social relations. The author points out to the reassesment of the vocabulary formerly associated only with the colloquial language, the sociolects or the dialects. In her opinion, the observed increase of the number of loanwords from English (especially American English) – although worrying – seems to be a temporary trend, which the Polish language will overcome as it did in the past. However, she notices the danger in the shifts in the stylistic system.

The Polish language keeps losing its position in comparison with other community languages. This is a result of new waves of immigrants arriving from China, Vietnam and Arabic countries. The article presents the current situation of Polish language in Australia referring first to the data gathered by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, then discussing factors that are crucial for language maintenance/shifting using the already existing models. The author divides the factors into ‘permanent’ and ‘dynamic,’ and then, in the second group he distinguishes between the factors that can or cannot be profiled. Such an approach reveals the areas where initiatives aimed at Polish language maintenance in Australia are most needed and can be the most effective.

One of the most influential decisions that immigrant parents must make for their children involves establishing a set of rules and norms governing what language(s) they will be raised with and how they will acquire proficiency in the dominant languages of the host society, a process known as family language policy. Such decisions can have long lasting effects for immigrant children into adulthood by influencing their integration into the host society and transition towards adult life. Using retrospective, in-depth interview data collected from young immigrant adults, this study explores the ways that parental decisions made throughout an immigrant child’s life course regarding language use and learning shape their multilingual identity and attitude towards the use of multiple languages in their everyday adult life. Findings suggest that the linguistic decisions parents make in the early years of an immigrant youths’ life have lasting impacts on them in terms of connecting to family members and culture in adulthood. We found that when parents created either a flexible or strict family language policy, such policies produced more positive experiences in the migration and early settlement process for immigrant youth compared to those whose parents did not form a family language policy.

Opis:
An appraisal of the expressive stability of the word „trawelebryta” The aim of this paper is to define the meanings as well as to establish the contexts in which one can find the relatively new lexeme trawelebryta ‘travelebrity’ in the Polish language. Its novelty manifests itself in the lack of the spelling unification, which additionally implies that the word is not well-ingrained in the language yet. On the other hand, the lexeme serves as a word-formation base for other lexemes, which in turn indicates that the word is already a part of the mental lexicon of native speakers of Polish. Although it was determined that the lexeme is relatively stable, we found five distinctive meanings, which are still undergoing certain semantic and formal modifications. The evolution of its meaning shows a tendency to shift towards negative connotations, from neutral to colloquial, and, in extreme cases, even to the offensive ones. It was evidenced by sets of synonyms and contexts to which the lexeme was assigned. The paper ultimately shows that the adaptation process of the lexeme in the Polish language is not over yet.

Punktem wyjścia artykułu jest ośmiostopniowa skala działań Joshuy A. Fishmana, które – jego zdaniem – powinny być podejmowane wobec mniejszości językowej i przez nią samą, aby język mniejszościowy miał szanse przetrwać (The Graded Intergenerational Dislocation Scale). Te działania służą również zachowaniu tożsamości kulturowej. W tekście przedstawiono i omówiono niektóre działania społeczności kaszubskiej w celu zachowania i rozwoju tożsamości językowej i kulturowej (w sferach takich jak transmisja międzypokoleniowa, edukacja, oficjalny status języka, życie publiczne i media masowe, instytucje i organizacje etniczne).
The starting point for the article is Joshua A. Fishman’s eight point scale of activities that should be taken towards linguistic minorities and by them in order for the minority languages to survive (The Graded Intergenerational Dislocation Scale). All activities related to a minority language also serve to maintain the cultural identity. Based on the Fishman’s schema, certain activities undertaken by the Kashubian community are described and discussed whose aim is to preserve and develop their linguistic and cultural identity (in fields such as intergenerational transmission of the language, education, offi cial status of the language, public life and mass media, ethnic institutions and organizations). As a comparative background selected activities carried out by two different European minorities are presented, namely those of – Bretons in France and Sorbs in Germany. The presentation of contemporary activities undertaken by minority groups leads to reflection on the present situation and condition of minority cultures and endangered languages.

The research reported in the article investigates sociolinguistic factors of ethnic identity change and identity strengthening, as exemplified on the processes of ethnic revival in the regions of Upper Silesia and Cashuby. The article compares selected aspects of synchronic and diachronic situation of the two ethnolects in Poland: Cashubian and Silesian. The analysis singles out some focal points around which ethnic identity tends to concentrate, for example identity bonds, official inscriptions, language of instruction. The identity strengthening strategies in the respective ethnolects are then compared and discussed. The framework is based on sociological and anthropological theories, e.g.rational choice theory, functionalism as well as on the semiotic rich-get-richer principle, the paradigm of visual anthropology and the technique of visual essay.

Almost 500 years of constant contact with the Spanish language have influenced Mexican indigenous languages and their speakers in many different ways, and Nahuatl language makes here no exception. Apart from code-switching and massive borrowings (that include, for instance, core vocabulary and function morphemes), the convergence processes can be clearly found in many modern varieties of Nahuatl language as a step that can be observed next to a process of language shift. The present contribution investigates and examines the convergence process in Nahuatl language within the 4-M model (described in detail in Myers-Scotton & Jake 2000) in order to test the claim that this model can be applied to different kinds of contact language phenomena other than code-switching. This model distinguishes four morpheme types which do not participate equally in language contact phenomena. Some of them, for example, show retention, while others easily undergo an external change. The investigation discussed in the article was carried out in the city of San Sebastian Zinacatepec which is situated in southeastern Puebla in Mexico.

The language shift among middle and upper-middle-class families in Kapampangan-speaking communities was the focus of this study. The tool consists of the following: (a) an interview guide containing items related to the languages they used at home, with friends, and content about their parents’ race; (b) a wordlist containing specific words from Kapampangan liturgical prayers to determine whether there is an evolution of words in the Kapampangan language; and (c) data were interpreted using Fishman’s Expanded Graded Intergenerational Disruption Scale (EGIDS). The data of the study were taken from the 63 Catholic Kapampangan informants, regardless of sex, must be native of the city or town in the province of Pampanga, and nearby Kapampangan-speaking provinces, with an age bracket of 18-21 years old. Findings reveal that some Kapampangan words are in great danger. Unknowingly, little by little, Kapampangan people are shifting their language to a mixture of Tagalog and English. The attitude of using and choosing English and Tagalog as the languages at home instead of the Kapampangan significantly contributed to the language shift. The established Kapampangan language clashed with westernized trends and modern society. It was also pushed out slowly by intermarriage, technology, globalization, modernization, mass movements, and politics, which added up to losing Kapampangans’ unique identity. Finally, some words used in Catholic liturgical prayers should be updated since some words are not familiar anymore to the younger generation.

Opis:
Language pedagogy primarily casts light on cultural trajectories of language use in certain communities. By examining these of the Gopali community in the Chitlang Valley, located 28 miles southwest of Kathmandu, this preliminary study delves into various applied aspects of language use in the area. Preliminary observations indicate that the Gopali, a subset of the Newar ethnic group, have a distinctive linguistic and cultural identity in Nepal. However, they have yet to be recognized as a separate ethnic community despite their unique language, marital exchange, origin stories, and cultural practices. Currently subsumed under the Newar subset, the Gopali language is on the brink of extinction primarily because of an increasing level of influence exerted by Nepali, Tamang and Kathmandu-based Newar accents on Gopali speakers. As the misrecognition of language and culture was historically linked with the political-economic access of the community, we observed the impact of the political economy on the Gopali of Chitlang. This paper has been developed on the basis of data elicited from various narratives, key informant interviews (KII), life histories, language surveys, and observations conducted in October, 2021. Thus, the interpretation has been made in relation to various political, social and economic relations of language use and cultural changes. In consideration of multilingualism as a norm of language education, this study has also explored the impact of multilingualism among the younger generation in the Chitlang Valley. The study can help policymakers introduce mother tongue-based multilingual education (MTB-MLE) to children in the Gopali community.
Niniejszy artykuł został opracowany na podstawie danych uzyskanych w wywiadach narracyjnych, wywiadach z kluczowymi informatorami, life stories (historii życia), badań językowych i obserwacji przeprowadzonych w październiku 2021 roku.
