    Opis:
    Marek Hendrykowski’s study presents an analysis of a unique film made in 1979 by the young Polish director Michał Tarkowski during his studies in the Lodz Film School. The author argues that in several respects Tarkowski’s The Montgolfier Brothers’ Interrupted Breakfast is a perfect example illustrating the original use of art-cinema conventions and forms for what might be interpreted as the aesthetics of camp, but also as mediated “landscape of events” (based on a term invented by Paul Virilio).

    The aim of this essay is to compare how Darwinian references are used in the writings of two late 20th century American authors, Annie Dillard and Kurt Vonnegut who both choose the Galapagos archipelago as the focal setting of their symbolical narratives, as we see in Vonnegut’s novel Gala´pagos and in Dillard’s essay ‘‘Life on the Rock: the Gala´pagos.” As far as Dillard’s prose is concerned, she also depicts the archipelago in other short narratives from Teaching a Stone to Talk and Pilgrim at Tinker Creek. Although neither Dillard nor Vonnegut have a conspicuously political agenda, they both consider the theory of evolution a heavily ideological subject and both apply the Darwinian paradigm to describe nature and the human race within nature.

    Opis:
    In the wake of the growing recognition of Kurt Vonnegut's prose in Poland, the publishers decided to also make his essays available to the Polish audience. Sometimes the Polish versions were translated much later than the originals, but sometimes the Polish texts directly followed the publication of the American source texts. In his essays, Vonnegut repeatedly refers to numerous aspects of the American realia: history, literature and popular culture. The references are both direct and indirect. Vonnegut's essays are an example of a text where the role of a translator as a cultural mediator is paramount. Unfortunately, not all translators have succeeded in the task. The translated texts contain evident translation flaws caused by the translator's being unfamiliar with the cultural context of the original. The paper analyses these mistakes and presents examples of how translators descriptively handled certain cultural references. This strategy helped them save the comprehensibility of the text at the cost of its unintended simplification.
