Opis:: Wśród najstarszych, nielicznych źródeł pisanych odnoszących się do początków organizacji państwowości na ziemiach polskich znajduje się znana relacja kupca arabskiego Ibrahima Ibn Jakuba datowana na lata 966-967, w której opisywał on Kraków jako drugi co do znaczenia ośrodek miejski w państwie Bolesława I Czeskiego. Dziś nie jest już podważana wiarygodność tego przekazu wobec wciąż nowych odkryć - zwłaszcza na Wawelu i badań historyków podejmujących reinterpretację źródeł pozwalającą na weryfikację dotychczasowych poglądów.
Among the oldest, the few written sources relating to the origins of the organization statehood on Polish territory is known relation of the Arab merchant Ibrahim ibn Jakub dating back to 966-967 years, which he described as the second Krakow on the importance of urban center in the country of Boleslaw I Czech.

Opis:: Thorough research into town houses was initiated during the first half of the twentieth century, the period of the first modern studies dealing with the urban development of old towns (the most extensive investigations were conducted in Lvov, Warsaw and Cracow). The investigations encompassed an analysis of particular town houses as well as their complexes perceived from the viewpoint of the history of architecture. Scientific investigations conducted at the time inspired the conservation of old town houses, which entailed reconstruction of wartime devastation, the recreation and rebuilding of transformed parts of buildings, and the conservation of historical townhouse complexes as well as a reform of the development of the lots. A number of town houses in Lvov, Cracow, Warsaw, Toruń, Vilno and several smaller centres was subjected to conservation. Greatest importance was attached to the façade and rendering its spatial configuration more legible, without, as a rule, due attention paid to the development of building lots. Conservation entailed the repair and conservation of elevations and, sometimes, of particular details (masonry or ceilings). Upon certain occasions, the conservation of interiors led to the removal of secondary divisions and rendering the historical outfitting of the interiors more legible. Upon other occasions, old town houses were arranged in a contemporary mode. Such reconstruction was carried out in a historical spirit (arbitrary compositions of neo-Renaissance, neo-Baroque, Neoclassical and modern elements). The town houses were also granted a contemporary modernist outfitting which referred to stylised historical forms. The work conducted at the time frequently exceeded the binding theory of the history and conservation of architecture, and the applied solutions were repeated after the second world war when they probably influenced the conception of reconstructing the townhouse development of historical cities. The article analyses research focused on old town houses, conducted in Poland up to 1939, and the trends of reconstruction after World War I. The author went on to consider the conservation of historical buildings, focusing on their range and applied methods, and presented the most important conservation undertakings of the period. The last discussed issue is the problem of modern architecture adjoining historical town houses, widely considered at the time.

Opis:: The following article shows the very first attempt to locate the places of living of Krakow’s councillors in the 14th century in scientic literature. 170 councillors were taken under consideration in this quest. Krakow City Books and other documents from the 14th century were the source for analysis. Unfortunately, the tax list of this century is missing. Nevertheless, information provided in the documents gives light to houses and living conditions, as well as to transactions performed by councillors. Thanks to the notes evidencing councillor’s and his family right to the property, the author was also able to nd some information about particular houses that a councillor lived in. Krakow City Books provided information about a house kept by a widow, or inherited by the oldest son, therefore it was possible to know which house belonged to a councillor. It was necessary to establish family ties, which could be presented only in limited perspective. The author also took under consideration buildings that were noted as landmark in transactions between other citizens. Based on these evidence it was ossible to conrm that 60% of councillors in the 14th century lived in Krakow’s Market Square. Another popular addresses were: Braci Mniejszych Street and Grodzka Street (ca. 8–9%), Św. Floriana Street, Wiślna Street, Św. Jana Street (3.7%), Św. Szczepana Street and Mały Rynek (2.2%). Some councillors also lived on Szewska Street, Żydowska Street and Braci Kaznodziejów Street (1.5–0.75%).

Opis:: The conservation of immobile monuments is perceived predominantly from the viewpoint of sciences about art and the technical sciences. Nonetheless, it possesses an organisational- legal dimension, which has been gaining increasing importance especially in the last decades; this holds true also for the Polish democratic state of the law as conceived by the Constitution of the Republic of Poland. The aspect in question was significant for many historical conservation undertakings, today regarded as classical and concerning historical monuments in Polish lands. This was the type of conservation which during the nineteenth century involved the Cracow Cloth Halls (Sukiennice), performed according to a project by T. Pryliñski and supervised by him. Heretofore literature has not analysed more extensively the legal–organisational aspects of the investment connected with the aforementioned project, which has been characterised only marginally. The presented article deals with an analysis of assorted legal and organisational aspects, with reference to the contemporary legal system. It is characteristic that the typical feature of the conservation-investment efforts of the period, despite the absence of regulations concerning public commissions which would have corresponded to the legal standards of the time, was the attention paid to a proper administration of public means. The extremely important principle of the openness of public activity and expenses was realised in practice. Apart from the fundamental literature on the subject the text is based also on archival documents, including the resolutions of the Cracow Town Council, numerous reports and other archival material, supplemented with archival photographs, of which three, showing the end stages of the conservation of the Cloth Halls, had never been published. The purpose of the article, apart from its historical– cognitive function, is to draw attention to legal and organisational aspects of conservation, frequently ignored and, at times, even recognised as a hindrance. The presented study demonstrates that this aspect preceded, by no means as of today, the conservation proper of the historical monument, carried out by architects, conservators, “manual” workers and representatives of other professions, whose participation is indispensable in the conservation process as a whole.
