    W artykule przeprowadzono analizę ilościową zaangażowania aparatu Komitetu Warszawskiego PZPR w gospodarkę (ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem przemysłu) w latach 1950–1975. Po przedstawieniu materiału źródłowego i jego krytyki autor prezentuje zmiany poziomu aktywności KW określane poprzez liczbę spraw dyskutowanych podczas posiedzeń egzekutywy (rocznie), by następnie dokonać analogicznej analizy w odniesieniu do spraw gospodarczych i przemysłowych. W konkluzjach zostały wskazane podstawowe tendencje zaobserwowane w badanym okresie – ogólna tendencja spadkowa aktywności aparatu warszawskiego PZPR, momenty stanowiące punkty zwrotne w jego aktywności (przede wszystkim rok 1956) oraz gwałtowny wzrost zaangażowania KW w sprawy gospodarcze po dojściu do władzy Edwarda Gierka.
    The article focuses on quantitative analysis of the involvement of the Warsaw Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party in economic matters (with particular emphasis on industry) in the years 1950–1975. After introducing and commenting on source material, the author discusses changes in the Committee’s general level of activity estimated on the basis of the number of items discussed during executive meetings (annually) and uses the same method in evaluating the activity concerning economic and industrial matters. The conclusions indicate basic trends which could be observed in the period in question – the overall decrease in the level of activity of the Warsaw Committee’s apparatus, watershed moments in its operation (primarily the year 1956) and a sudden surge in its involvement in economic matters after Edward Gierek’s rise to power.

    Stefan Staszewski, born in 1906 in Warsaw as Gustaw Szuster, was an active member of the Young Communist League of Poland and the Communist Party of Poland, trained from 1926 to 1928 in the International Lenin School in Moscow. He was arrested three times in Poland for communist activity. In 1934, he fled to the USSR, where he was reprimanded for membership in M. Lampe’s group, and then expelled from the AUCP(b) and arrested by the NKVD. He was sentenced to 15 years in a Kolyma Gulag camp. He was released in 1945 thanks to Bolesław Bierut’s intervention, and after coming to Poland, he joined the Polish Workers’ Party (PPR) and changed his name to Stefan Staszewski. The Secretary of the PPR Central Committee dispatched him to Katowice to take the position of the secretary for industrial affairs. Soon, he became the editor-in-chief of Trybuna Robotnicza, which achieved considerable success under his management. In 1948, the party leadership gave him the very responsible post of the director of the Department of Press and Publications of the PUWP’s Central Committee. Staszewski changed radically the organizational system of the party press and of the publishing businesses’ activity, and contributed to the development of communist journalism. In 1954, he was dismissed from the post of the Department of Press and Publications’ head and moved to the Ministry of Agriculture. During the thaw, he became a critic of the former party leadership and began to actively aid supporters of reforms. As the First Secretary of the PUWP Warsaw Committee, in October 1956 he organized and supervised rallies at Warsaw universities and work places. During the Eighth Plenary Session of the PUWP Central Committee, he was attacked by activists belonging to the “Natolinian group”. His stance was violently criticised by Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev, which resulted in his dismissal from the post of secretary of the Warsaw party organization. Staszewski largely contributed to the success of the party reformers and to positive transformations initiated during the Eighth Plenary Session. Having left the PUWP Warsaw Committee, he worked for a short time in the Polish Press Agency. His relationship with new party authorities steadily became worse, which resulted in him being removed from the post of the assistant of the member of PUWP Central Committee. That is why he began to work for the State Scientific Publishers (PWN) in the editorial section of the Great Universal Encyclopaedia. In 1968, party propaganda presented him, together with Roman Zambrowski, as the most dangerous threat to the PRL’s constitutional order. In the 1970s, he maintained close relations with the Workers’ Defence Committee. Under martial law, his flat was searched by the Security Service.

    Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie zagadnień związanych z organizacją, przebiegiem i opracowaniem wyników pierwszego powszechnego spisu ludności w Królestwie Polskim, który przeprowadzono w 1897 r. Uwagę skupiono na ziemiach Królestwa Polskiego, znajdującego się pod panowaniem rosyjskim, niemniej jednak starano się przedstawić problematykę spisu w szerszym kontekście działalności władz centralnych w Petersburgu. W polskiej historiografii zagadnienia te podejmowali nieliczni autorzy i jedynie w ograniczonym zakresie, przede wszystkim dotyczącym oceny kompletności danych spisowych. Główną rolę w przygotowaniu i przeprowadzeniu spisu w Królestwie Polskim odegrały władze gubernialne oraz Warszawski Komitet Statystyczny. Należy jednak podkreślić, że największy wysiłek związany z gromadzeniem danych spoczywał na władzach samorządowych najniższego szczebla. Na etapie centralnego opracowywania wyników spisu wykorzystano nowoczesne technologie, tj. maszyny liczące Holleritha. Dane zebrane na formularzach (które zawierały 14 pytań) kodowano na specjalnych kartach perforowanych, co znacząco usprawniło obliczenia. Wyniki spisu i sposób jego przeprowadzenia należy ocenić stosunkowo dobrze. W przypadku Królestwa Polskiego największe zastrzeżenia do wiarygodności spisu dotyczą raportowania wieku ludności, struktury zawodowej, a także wyznania i języka ojczystego.
    The aim of the article is to present the issues relating to the organisation, conduct and processing of the results of the first population census in the Kingdom of Poland in 1897 in a concise way. Although the text focuses on the lands of the Kingdom of Poland which were under the Russian rule the aforementioned issues have been discussed in a broader context of the activity of the central institutions in St. Petersburg. Polish historiography addresses these matters only to a limited extent and very few authors have dealt primarily with the notion of the completeness of census data. The provincial authorities and the Warsaw Statistical Committee played a major role in the preparation and conduct of the census in the Kingdom of Poland. It should be emphasised, however, that the greatest effort related to data collection rested with the lowest-level local government. At the stage of the central preparation of the census results, modern technologies, i.e. Hollerith’s calculating machines, were used. The data that was collected on forms containing 14 questions were coded on special perforated cards, which significantly improved the performance of the relevant calculations. The level at which the census was carried out and its final outcome are assessed relatively high. On the other hand, there are certain reservations as to the credibility of the census results relating to the Kingdom of Poland, the most serious of which concern the reporting of the age, the professional structure, as well as the religion and mother tongue of the respondents.
