    The article presents the relationship between one of the main representatives of Italian humanism – Pietro Bembo – with Poles. The most important aspect was his friendship with Klemens Janicki who studied in Padua in 1538–1540. His works are a testimony of contacts he had established when in Italy. Bembo was mentioned in Janicki’s works (Variae Elegiae IX,Epigrammata LII). Another element connecting the Italian with Poles were congratulatory letters on his cardinal appointment. The newly-appointed cardinal was congratulated by king Sigismund the Old via enigmatic figures of Jan Wincenty Dulcis de Lasco and Piotr Kmita.A trace of Bembo’s contact with Poles is also the formal correspondence of his while being the secretary of Pope Leo X.

    Klemens Janicki (1516-1543), bodaj największy poeta łaciński w Polsce, dla ludzi naszych czasów jest postacią mało znaną. Wielkopolanin, urodził się w Januszkowie pod Żninem. W każdym gatunku jego twórczości, czy to będzie elegia, czy epigram, czy skarga i satyra, czy pieśń weselna, nie mówiąc o parafrazie psalmu Dawidowego, znajdziemy mniejsze lub większe nawiązania do religii. Co w nich autor przekazał? Przepiękne obrazy wiary w Boga Ojca i Syna Bożego, w człowieczeństwo Chrystusa, w potężne wstawiennictwo Najświętszej Bogarodzicy Dziewicy, namalował wzory świętych polskich męczenników, Wojciecha i Stanisława, nakreślił swój stosunek do historycznych i aktualnych przedstawicieli Kościoła. Obrazy te zdecydowanie świadczą o katolickim profilu wyznawanej wiary. Pojawiające się w nich niekiedy słowa krytyczne nie dotyczą samych prawd wiary, lecz przestrzegania ich w praktyce codziennego życia, i wskazują raczej na intelektualną i emocjonalną sympatię dla nich oraz na troskę poety o jednoznaczność ludzkich postaw niezależnie od społecznego statusu. Luterańskie wpływy na niego były niewielkie, chociaż widoczne w niektórych wypowiedziach. Z całą mocą natomiast występował przeciw islamowi szerzącemu się w Europie przez zbrojne najazdy. Znając na wylot filozofię i ducha starożytnego świata, nie identyfikował się z nim w kwestiach wiary i moralności. Wiara Janickiego bowiem – jak to wynika z przedstawionych wątków – była dojrzałą katolicką wiarą renesansowego intelektualisty, a nie cichego i pokornego syna chłopa z Januszkowa pod Żninem.
    Klemens Janicki (1516-1543), arguably the greatest Latin poet in Poland, is little known to the people of our times. He was a citizen of Greater Poland, born in Januszkowo near Żnin. In each of the genres practiced by him, be it elegy or epigram, complaint or satire, or wedding song, not to speak of the paraphrase of the psalms of David, we fi nd minor or major references to religion. What did the author convey in them? Beautiful images of faith in God the Father, the humanity of Christ, the powerful intercession of the Most Blessed Virgin Mary; depictions of the holy Polish martyrs, Adalbert and Stanislaus; the author’s own attitude to historical and his contemporary representatives of the Church. These images give preeminent evidence of the Catholic profi le of the faith professed by Janicki. The occasional critical words do not pertain to the truths of faith as such but to inadequate obedience of them in everyday life, so the criticism indicates the poet’s intellectual and emotional support of those truths and his concern for an explicitness of people’s attitudes irrespective of their social status. Lutheran infl uences are scarce in his works, though noticeable in some utterances. He was strongly opposed to Islam which was then spreading through armed invasion. Being versatile in the philosophy and spirit of the ancient world he did not identify with it in questions of faith and morality. Janicki’s faith – as can be gathered from the presented themes – was the mature Catholic faith of a renaissance intellectual and not that of a meek and humble son of a peasant from Januszkowo near Żnin.

    Opis:
    The article is analysing literary portraits of Polish kings, which Jan Bielski took from the „Vitae Regum Polonorum” by Klemens Janicki. The Jesuit placed those short poems in his book „Widok Królestwa Polskiego” — a kind of history and geography textbook. Bielski’s paraphrases supple- mented most chapters of the book, constituted the poetic summary and at the same time enable to formulate the evaluation of kings. Bielski’s poems are most often a faithful paraphrase, preserving the plot of the original. The Jesuit made only a few changes. Most of them reveal on the stylistic plain, rarely on the content plain.

    The author of this article made a synthetic presentation of the results of the research of Polish and Italian historiography (based on the surveys into the primary sources) regarding the sojourn and study of Klemens Janicki at the University of Padua. Preserved doctoral diploma and poetic laurels bestowed upon the poet at the same time allowed the reconstruction of the course of this ceremony and identification of its participants. Academic atmosphere of Padua was presented in the article, including its prominent representatives: lawyers, philosophers and physicians, as well as the group of Polish students from the first half of the sixteenth century.

    L’articolo tratta di elegie ed epigrammi scelti composti da Klemens Janicki, i quali contengono descrizioni di Padova, dell’Italia e di persone legate alla città di Antenore e a Venezia: Lazzaro Bonamico, Giovanni Battista Da Monte, Francesco Cassano, Pietro Bembo, Ludovico Dolce, Daniele Barbaro. L’Autrice sostiene che Janicki sia riuscito a creare un’immagine dell’Italia ed in particolare di Padova, una seconda patria, dove il poeta potè svilupparsi, studiare ed essere curato. Le poesie legate all’Italia e Padova contribuiscono inoltre ad arricchire la biografia letteraria di Janicki, un cittadino del mondo, un poeta laurato, uno studente allegro, un paziente felice, un amico e un collega delle persone legate alla Repubblica di Venezia nella prima metà del XVI secolo.
    This article discusses selected elegies and epigrams by Klemens Janicki which contain descriptions of Padua, Italy and people associated with the city of Antenor and Venice: Lazzaro Bonamico, Giovanni Battista Da Monte, Francesco Cassano, Pietro Bemba, Ludovico Dolce, Daniele Barbaro. The author argues that Janicki succeeded in creating an image of Italy and, above all, Padua – a second homeland where the poet could develop, study, and be cured. The poems associated with Italy and Padua also help to enrich the literary biography of Janicius – a citizen of the world, a laureate poet, a cheerful student, a happy patient, a friend, and colleague of the people associated with the Republic of Venice in the first half of the 16th century.

    Analiza elegii Budae a Turcis occupatae querela ze zbioru Tristiów Klemensa Janickiego (The analysis of the elegy Budae a Turcis occupatae querela of Klemens Janicki’s Tristia).This article contains the analysis of the so far little researched elegy from the book of Tristia by an Early Modern Polish poet Klemens Janicki (Clemens Ianicius) written after the Turks conquered Buda in the summer of 1541. The analysis focuses on the composition of Janicki’s elegy, the method and means used by the poet to get the recipients to take action against Turkey imperiling Europe.
