Opis:
The Akritic Hero in Byzantine and Macedonian Epic PoetryComparative analysis of the most prominent heroic characters of Byzantine (Armouris and Digenes) and Macedonian (King Marko) epic poetry uncovers numerous contact points that reveal the close relation between these two cultures over a longer period of time. By using the term “akritic hero” or border warrior in Byzantine and the term kraishnik in Macedonian epic poetry, the paper analyses the relation between these two representations of the same type of epic hero. Complex concordance is explored on several levels which illustrate several characteristic features of the Byzantine akritic heroes Digenes and King Marko in traditional Macedonian epic poetry. Both Digenes and Marko are lone horsemen roaming in restricted territory (Cappadocia andMacedonia), they fight as individuals with distinguished opponents and even with armies, and win the fights, slay the dragon in identical manner, there are occurrences of child-heroes in the songs and the institution of avunculate is particularly emphasised in the act of initiation etc. Unlike monolithic character of Homeric heroes, in Byzantine and Macedonian epic poetry both Digenes and Marko are significantly more complex and occasionally inconsistent characters which is due to their centuries-long shaping in territories where different cultural influences are interwoven. Bohater z pogranicza w bizantyjskiej i macedońskiej poezji epickiejAnaliza komparatystyczna najbardziej wyrazistych postaci w bizantyjskiej (Armuris i Digenis) i macedońskiej (Królewicz Marko) epice ujawnia szereg punktów wspólnych, co świadczy o bliskich kontaktach pomiędzy tymi dwiema kulturami w długim okresie czasu.

The article focuses on the phenomenon of modern mass culture, such as the netliterature; the specifics of functioning the Tsar-derivative series of nominations with the indecipherable appraisal component of the king is shown (Tsar Cannon, Tsar Bell, Tsar Fish, Tsar Maiden, Tsar Country, etc.). On the basis of the analysis of linguistic material, two thematic groups of tsar-derivatives are distinguished: “Nature and its components” and “Public political and cultural life”. It has been revealed that the king-derivatives are frequent in poetic texts; a precedent name is often used as a title. Creation of creolized texts within the framework of the netliterature has been noted.

Opis:
The paper presents the proposal of a method for an indirect evaluation of geomorphic activity on ice-free areas on King George Island (South Shetlands, West Antarctica) through analysis of climatic conditions affecting the mobility of mineral matter. It was assumed that weather conditions affected the movement of mineral matter, which in turn determined geomorphic activity on ice-free areas, which currently occupy over 25 km2 of Admiralty Bay. On the basis of encoded values of six variables: air temperature, wind speed, rainfall, sunshine, ground temperature, and thickness of snow cover, diurnal types of the efficiency of mineral matter circulation were determined which were then clustered using the k-means method. After the cumulation of results for 7-day periods, a total of 59 homogeneous periods were obtained characterised by diurnal types of geomorphic activity (1, 2 and 3) in the observation period from April 10, 1990 to January 13, 1994. The summer season is a period with a high efficiency of mineral matter circulation and geomorphic activity, while winter time is one with a low efficiency of mineral matter circulation and geomorphic activity. Periods with an average efficiency of mineral matter circulation and geomorphic activity correspond to ascending and descending transition times. It is possible to associate the descending period with the autumn season in the temperate zone, while the ascending period, with spring-time.

Lawrence Goślicki, later bishop of Poznańand Senator, at the end of their studies in Italy, issued in 1568 the work De optimo senatore. In it, he describes his thoughts on the state model, the duties of authorities and, above all, sketched an ideal profile of the position of Senator perfect. Senators must come from the citizens. The right, to choose one, belongs only to the ruler. In making such a decision, he has to have regard for the physical appearance, suitable birth and financial status, intellectual condition, disposition, education, good repute and experience in public service. The decisive factor, however, remains virtue. The Senator’s task is to advise the king, and to mediate between him and the citizens. The Senator is the most important official in the country, the senator is at its heart. His most important virtue is to be prudence. He should also be guided by moderation in both public and private life. It is a model for others, a teacher of virtue. On his shoulders rests largely the wellbeing of the state.

Opis:
A fishing rod of the king of the Ruthenians (Gallus Anonymus, Book I, chapt. 7)The purpose of the article is an attempt to solve the following question: why did Gallus Anonymus present the king of the Ruthenians fishing with a fishing rod at the very moment of Boleslaw Chrobry’s attack, which inflicted a catastrophic defeat upon Rus’? In the Chronicle the king of the Ruthenians is presented as an unwarlike and cowardly man, but this in itself does not explain, why the chronicler placed him in a boat, fishing. The matter is not made clear by the medieval adaptations of this anecdote by Wincenty Kadłubek and Jan Długosz. None of them understood the sense Gallus gave to the motif of fishing rod and both changed its meaning. Also the cases of fishing described in the Bible have a different character altogether. But a useful context is given by motif of fishing rod and fishing people in stories certainly unknown to Gallus Anonymus. The article presents a choice of texts where fishing refers to military matters and brings disgrace to the king or hero: Le roman de Perceval ou le conte du Graal by Chrétien de Troyes (the Fisher King), Plutarch’s Life of Antony, Waltharius, the story about Arnulf conquering Rome in the Antapodosis by Liudprand of Cremona. The comparison makes it possible to say that in the medieval literature the fishing rode quite often plays the role of anti-attribute that given to a king or warlike hero becomes a clear sign of the lacked or lost ability to command the army and fight war, or of the betrayal of the honour of a brave soldier. On the other hand, the association with fishing or with using a fishing rod is not disgraceful for people who do not aspire to military functions or actions, as illustrated by the examples of Wanda-Węda in the Chronica Poloniae maioris (Chronicle of Greater Poland), and of Saint Zeno of Verona in De Zenonis vita sermo Coronati Notarii.

We wnioskach podkreśliłam konieczność podjęcia prac nad edycjami wszystkich drukowanych diariuszy stanisławowskich.
In the article, I present an analysis of the content of the printed diary of the 1776 Sejm compared with four preserved handwritten diaries and with contemporary printed Sejm speeches. On this basis, I have indicated the elements undermining the credibility of the 1776 Sejm diary prepared by order of King Stanislaus Augustus by Adam Cieciszowski, secretary of the 1776 Sejm and an employee of the Royal Cabinet. I also present the reasons – with the king’s knowledge – he modified the text that changed the overtone of the Sejm events. In conclusion, I stress the need to study all the editions of printed Sejm diaries of King Stanislaus Augustus period.

Największą szerokość klatki piersiowej w całym okresie badań miały gołębie rasy king, a długość mostka – gołębie rasy strasser.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the body weight gain and the two related parameters in pigeons from the 7th day post hatching to the 24th month of life. The experiment was carried on meat-type breeds (King, Strasser, Wrocławski meat) and on Homing pigeon. A total of 200 birds (50 individuals per breed) were examined. The birds were weighed and measured at day 7, 14, 28 and 3, 6, 12, and 24 months of life. The obtained results showed that during the analyzed period the King breed was characterized by the highest body weight, while the Homing pigeon by the lowest one, what can result from different breeding goals. The biggest thorax width was stated in King breed and the longest crest of the bridge was found in Strasser pigeons.

The Chronicles of Narnia has an established position in the canon of children’s literature. However, what on the surface is a fairy tale involving adventures and magic; with children, kings, talking beasts, and wood spirits as main protagonists; is, in fact, a set of stories deeply rooted in Christian and chivalric traditions, containing elements of beast fable and morality tale. The story, according to Madeline L’Engle, depending on the reader's cultural knowledge and experience, may be understood on various levels, from the literal one of an adventure story for children, through the moral and allegorical levels, eventually reaching the anagogical level. While reading The Chronicles, one is able to notice various references to other written works, interwoven into the text, with the Bible, chivalric romances and beast fables being the most prominent sources of intertextual allusions. In The Last Battle Lewis attempts to answer John Donne’s question, “What if this present were the world’s last night?" (Holy Sonnet XIII) and presents a comprehensive image of Narnian apocalypse and life after death in Aslan’s country. The following paper will present the most noteworthy intertextual references in the final volume of The Narniad.

Opis:
In 1999 hydrometeorological observations were carried out at H. Arctowski Station. Ice phenomena in the Admiralty Bay and in the visible neighbouring area of the Bransfield Strait were, among others, the subject of these observations. The Admiralty Bay is a typical fjord and is the biggest bay in the Southern Shetlands archipelago, covering 122.08 km2. Winter ice cover formation of this area varies in different years. Once every 4-5 years the waters of the Bay do not freeze and the ice observed there originates from the Bransfield Strait. During the whole year glacial ice (brash ice, growlers, bergy bits and icebergs) originating from local sources and from other sea areas can be observed in the Admiralty Bay. In 1999 the process of the ice cover formation was characterised by variability both in time and space. During the observational period floating ice formed ice fields of different shapes and concentration. Brash ice and growlers often covered the weatter shore during high tidal waters. The icebergs in the said period are mainly observed at the entrance of the Bay (in the region of the Syrezol Rocks) less frequently inside the Bay. They usually drifted in the axial part of the Bay hardly ever reaching its central part. The autochthonous sea ice formed only near the shore and during the whole year it was the inflowing ice which was predominant. First forms of new ice in the waters of the Admiralty Bay occurred in the second decade of June. These forms were initial stage forms (frazil ice and grease ice) which never changed into more advanced form of sea ice. At the end of June the process of ice inflow from the Bransfield Strait started. The allochthonous ice reached mainly the axial and central parts of the Bay, however there were few cases noted in which the ice reached the auxiliary bays. The observations showed that the character of the main features of the winter sea ice cover of the Admiralty Bay was predominantly influenced by wind and ice conditions of the Bransfield Strait. In 1999 the Admiralty Bay was not covered by consolidated ice but by drifting ice which changed its position and edge very quickly. The course of ice phenomena in winter season 1999 had a mild character and according to Kruszewski's categories (1999) defining the ice conditions in the Admiralty Bay may be classed as number one.

Polish Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculate belonged initially to the religious  provinces of their Congregation in Germany and Canada. Since the end of the 19th century they were involved greatly with the ministry to the Polish immigrants. After 1918 they pursued a project of   founding a separate Polish province. Their first most important communities in Poland were organized with the support of the archbishops of Poznań and Gniezno and of civil authorities in Poznań. The reasons for choosing this area included its traditional patriotism and closeness to Silesia, which was the source of many early Oblate Polish vocations.
