    Kashubian rituals around the deceased acquire a magical character, where the sacred is ubiquitous and intertwines seamlessly with the profane. Kashubian culture represents primal magic, many activities around the deceased are symbolic; talking to the body while washing it, singing, observing the deceased, equipping them with various objects, is aimed at successfully transferring them to the world of the sacred. This displacement has always been associated with the tension and horror that characterize the ritual. The purpose of this article is to show the rites of passage and traditional symbolic activities aimed at a smooth transition of the body status of the deceased, from the profane to the sacred, and their ephemeral and ambivalent character. Moreover, the cases of ineffective or interrupted rituals will be pointed out. The above issue will be discussed in the context of symbolic actions over the body, which are to lead to the sphere of the sacred, an effective transition from the separation phase, through suspension, to the aggregation phase.

    The article presents folk etymologies in the work of Florian Ceynowa (1817–1881), who is the creator of the written version of the Kashubian language, entitled Rozmòwa Pòlôcha z Kaszëbą (1850). Rozmòwa...is maintained in a form of dialogue which preaches the most important information about Kashubians. 30 folk etymologies written by Ceynowa, 3 of which are about the war and 27 about the Bible, serve – thanks to creating a positive picture of the 19th century Kashubia and Kashubians – the construction of Kashubian identity and prestige of the whole Kashubian community.

    The article is based on a participatory observation and semi-structured interviews conducted in 2012 and 2013 with young (aged 16–25) Upper Sorbs and Kashubs. They were asked about their perception of the Upper Sorbian/Kashubian culture, its relation with the past, tradition and folklore, reception of the dominant image of their culture and the existence of a modern dimension of the Upper Sorbian/Kashubian culture. An analysis of the young peoples’ statements and anthropological research shows that a relation with tradition is still important for minority culture participants although it depends on the way this culture is lived. In the case of the Upper Sorbs some of the traditions, related to the Catholic culture, are alive and constitute an important part of community life. They are perceived as the ‘authentic’ ones. The Kashubian culture, however, has been strongly folklorized and young people do not identify with the folkloric representations and image of this culture, which is treated as an artificial phenomenon. Young people of both cultures want their culture to be modern yet, at the same time, have a connection with the past.

    The author focuses on the national emancipation strivings of part of the Kashubian elite in Poland. She proposes two interpretive views that could be helpful in understanding the ethnic processes presently occurring in the Kashubian community. The first derives from the category of nationalism, while the second refers to the concept of identity politics. The use of each makes it possible to perceive various aspects of the Kashubian national idea, although, as the author argues, the perspective of identity politics appears to be of more research interest and was the view primarily employed in analyzing the empirical material.

    W artykule zostały przeanalizowane zmiany stosunków ludnościowych (etnicznych) na terenie Pomorza Gdańskiego od wczesnego średniowiecza po współczesność. Analizę rozpoczęto od zakreślenia kontekstu historyczno-geograficznego, ponieważ granice terytorium określanego mianem Pomorze Gdańskie nieustannie ulegały zmianie, co wiązało się z przekształceniami politycznymi. Region bowiem był podporządkowany różnym centrom politycznym, z których każde prowadziło własną politykę osadniczą, migracyjną itd., skutkującą zmianami w strukturze etnicznej. Zwrócono uwagę na jej zmiany kolejno w czasach Zakonu Krzyżackiego, przynależności Pomorza do Rzeczypospolitej szlacheckiej, a szczególnie w okresie zaborów i w XX wieku. Podkreślono przy tym fenomen, jakim jest trwanie na tym terenie społeczności kaszubskiej. W końcowej części przeanalizowano skutki ludnościowe II wojny światowej, powojenne ruchy migracyjne, a wreszcie proces upodmiotowienia społeczności etnicznych na Pomorzu po 1989 roku.
    The article analyses changes of population/ethnic relations in Gdańsk Pomerania since early Middle Ages until modern times. The analysis starts with an outline of the historical and geographical framework, as the territory of what is nowadays called Gdańsk Pomerania was undergoing constant changes related to political transformations. The region was subject to various political centres, many of which pursued their own settlement, migration policies etc., what resulted in changes of the region’s ethnic structure. The author focuses on these developments in the consequent periods of the rule of the Teutonic Order, affi liation of Pomerania to the Commonwealth of Poland and Lithuania, and in particular the partitions of Poland and the 20th century. The key phenomenon in question is existence and duration of the Kashubian community in this area. The fi nal part discusses the consequences of the World War II for the population processes, including the post-war migrations, to conclude with the process of “subjectivisation” of ethnic communities in Pomerania after 1989.
