„Prayer for the Fatherland” based on Piotr Skarga’s writings and rightfully associated with his name, is perhaps the most known prayer text within its genre in Poland. It is said in public, aired on the radio and quoted numerously on the Internet. It played a special role on Sunday, 29 March 1981 in the height of the social tension in Poland, minutes before the general strike called by the Solidarity. Cardinal Franciszek Macharski ordered the Prayer to be said in all the churches of the Archdiocese of Krakow and the strike was cancelled. The Prayer was well known to John Paul II who often drew from it in his sermons. Nevertheless, the dating of the Prayer is unclear and its editor remains unknown. The present article addresses the questions of the prayer’s dating and authorship. It points to Piotr Skarga’s Sermons Preached to the Diet (Kazania sejmowe) as the Prayer’s text source, analyzes its structure and content. The article also uncovers an early 1936 version of the Prayer.

Autorka analizuje treść książki Mileny Kindziuk (ur. 1970-), na temat Emilii Wojtyłowej (1884-1929), matki Karola Wojtyły – papieża Jana Pawła II. Książka przynależy do literatury faktu, jest to reportaż z miejsc jej pobytu oraz próba odtworzenia jej biografii, mimo niezachowania się wielu źródeł archiwalnych i skąpości przekazów pamiętnikarskich. Autorka analizuje osobowość Emilii Wojtyłowej na podstawie szczątków wypowiedzi i fotografii, opisując sylwetkę tej kobiety na tle jej najbliższego środowiska (Wadowice, Kraków).
The author analyses the content of the book by Milena Kindziuk (b. 1970), about Emilia Wojtylowa (1884-1929), the mother of Karol Wojtyla – John Paul II. It is a non-fiction book, a kind of reportage on the places where Emilia Wojtylowa lived. It is an attempt at reproducing her biography, in spite of the scarcity of archival sources and memoir materials. The author presents Emilia Wojtyla’s personality on the basis of very few incomplete statements, opinions, and photographs describing the figure of that woman in her closest milieu. (Wadowice, Cracow).

In the context of the canonization of John Paul II, the author reflects on his experience of the concentration camp at Auschwitz. It is a difficult experience, therefore it can more reveal the Pope as a man and a pastor, his way of thinking and perceiving reality. Through canonization this way is indicated to us as a pattern. John Paul came often to Auschwitz, where he saw the place of denial of God and man, but also a place of victory of man over contempt, hatred and death through faith in God, which generates love for Him and for man. The symbol of such a victory is St. Maximilian Maria Kolbe, martyr of love that as Christ gave his life for the fellow prisoner Francis Gajowniczek. In this heroic deed – in the opinion of the Pope – Christ himself was present, so the camp at Auschwitz is not only hell on earth, but also the Golgotha of our times, the cemetery of the martyrs, the sanctuary of the patron of difficult century. Pope John Paul II arrived there to pray and make a reflection on the contemporary man’s condition, who in Christ the Redeemer can still conquer evil with good and to build the peace based on respect for the rights of person and nations.
W kontekście kanonizacji Jana Pawła II autor podejmuje refleksję nad jego doświadczeniem obozu koncentracyjnego w Auschwitz. Jest to doświadczenie trudne, dlatego może bardziej odsłonić papieża jako człowieka i duszpasterza, jego sposób myślenia i odbierania rzeczywistości. Poprzez kanonizację sposób ten zostaje nam wskazany jako wzorzec. Jan Paweł II pielgrzymował często do obozu w Auschwitz, w którym widział miejsce negacji Boga i człowieka, ale także miejsce zwycięstwa człowieka nad pogardą, nienawiścią i śmiercią dzięki wierze w Boga, z której czerpał miłość do Niego i do człowieka. Symbolem takiego zwycięstwa jest św. Maksymilian Maria Kolbe, męczennik miłości, który jak Chrystus oddał życie za współwięźnia Franciszka Gajowniczka. W tym heroicznym geście – zdaniem Papieża – był obecny sam Chrystus, dlatego obóz w Auschwitz to nie tylko piekło na ziemi, ale również Golgota naszych czasów, cmentarz męczenników, sanktuarium patrona trudnego stulecia. Jan Paweł II przybywał tam, aby się modlić i podejmować refleksję nad kondycją współczesnego człowieka, który w Chrystusie Odkupicielu może wciąż zło dobrem zwyciężać i budować pokój oparty na poszanowaniu praw osoby i narodów.

The article shows the work of the Holy Spirit in the lives of Christians and in the apostolic mission of the Church. It underlines the role of prayer to the Holy Spirit in Karol Wojtyła’s life as well as his apostolic commitment associated with receiving the sacrament of Confirmation. During his pastoral ministry as the Bishop of Krakow he gave special attention to explain the doctrine of this sacrament; putting out its significance for individuals and parish communities. Cardinal Wojtyła, as the head of Commission for the Lay Apostolate in the Polish Episcopate, proposed some specific reforms in the pastoral programs to increase the significance of Confirmation for the apostolic engagement of young people. He was convinced that different forms of renewal of Confirmation were needed in the pastoral life of the Church. During his visit in Poland in 1979 and 1991, John Paul II proposed a rite of renewal in the historical context, emphasizing the role of the Holy Spirit in contemporary history and the need to be open to his work in ours lives.
Artykuł ukazuje działanie Ducha Świętego w życiu chrześcijan i w apostolskiej misji Kościoła. Przypomina o roli modlitwy do Ducha Świętego w życiu Karola Wojtyły oraz jego zaangażowanie duszpasterskie związane z udzielaniem sakramentu bierzmowania. Pełniąc posługę biskupa krakowskiego, kładł on nacisk na wyjaśnienie teologii bierzmowania i jego znaczenia w życiu chrześcijanina i wspólnoty Kościoła. Jako przewodniczący Komisji Apostolstwa Świeckich, działającej w ramach Konferencji Episkopatu Polski, zaproponował przeprowadzenie zmian w programie pastoralnym, mających na celu większe podkreślenie znaczenia bierzmowania dla apostolstwa młodych. Podczas papieskich wizyt w Polsce w 1979 i 1991 roku Jan Paweł II dokonał odnowy sakramentu bierzmowania w wymiarze eklezjalnym, narodowym i historycznym, zwracając tym samym uwagę na działanie Ducha Świętego w sercach ludzi i w historii.

Autor článku se zabývá recepcí beletristického i dramatického díla Karola Wojtyły (papeže Jana Pavla II.) v České republice, zejména překlady jeho literárního díla do češtiny. Zejména v souvislosti s návštěvou papeže Jana Pavla II. v Československu a v České republice byly přeloženy a vydány výbory z tvorby Karola Wojtyły. Tyto překlady autor charakterizuje a zařazuje do žánrového kontextu. V závěru článku autor poukazuje na to, značná část literární tvorby Karola Wojtyły, papeže Jana Pavla II., dosud do češtiny přeložena nebyla. Českého čtenáře tak čeká ještě nejedna příležitost k hlubšímu poznání výjimečné osobnosti papeže Jana Pavla II.
Autor artykułu zajmuje recepcją beletrystyki i dramatów Karola Wojtyły (papieża Jana Pawła II) w Republice Czeskiej, w szczególności przekładami jego dzieła literackiego na czeski. Zwłaszcza w związku z wizytą papieża Jana Pawła II w Czechosłowacji i w Republice Czeskiej przełożno i wydano wybory twórczości Karola Wojtyły. Te przekłady autor charakteryzuje i umieszcza w kontekście gatunku. W konkluzji artykułu autor wskazuje na to, że znaczna część literackiej twórczości Karola Wojtyły, papieża Jana Pawła II, dotąd nie została przełożona na czeski. Czeskiego czytelnika więc czeka jeszcze niejedna sposobność do głębszego poznania wyjątkowej osobowości papieża Jana Pawła II.
The author deals with the reception of fictional and dramatic works by Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II.) in the Czech Republic, in particular with translations of his literary work into Czech. In connection with the visit of Pope John Paul II in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic selections from Karol Wojtyla’s works were translated and subsequently published.. In the present article these translations are described and placed in the genre context. In conclusion the author points out that many of the literary works of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II., have not yet been translated into Czech. So there will be still many opportunities for Czech readers to get a better knowledge and understanding of the exceptional mind and character of Pope John Paul II.

Karol Wojtyła jako kapłan, biskup i papież w swoim nauczaniu i przepowiadaniu poświęca wiele uwagi świętemu Janowi z Kęt. Widzi w nim wzór oddanego profesora, naukowca, a jednocześnie otwartego na potrzeby innych duszpasterza. Podkreślał takie cechy jego charakteru jak pracowitość, solidność, wrażliwość, zapał w zdobywaniu wiedzy. To wszystko, zdaniem Karola Wojtyły, czyniło ze świętego Jana Kantego postać wybitną i godną naśladowania.

The article aims at showing that the philosophical personalism of Pope John Paul II (Karol Wojtyla) stems from the common sense approach to reality. First, it presents Karol Wojtyla as a framer of the Lublin Philosophical School, to which he was affiliated for 24 years before being elected Pope John Paul II; it shows Wojtyla’s role in establishing this original philosophical School by his contribution to its endorsement of Thomism, its way of doing philosophy, and its classically understood personalism. Secondly, it identifies a purpose of Wojtyla’s use of the phenomenological method in his personalism and reconstructs Wojtyla’s possible answer to the question whether there is a link between moral sense and common sense in human experience.

The article discusses the issues of consumer lifestyle in the light of John Paul II personalism. Author describes circumstances of western culture and dangers which can result from the adoption of consumer mindset. The text shows the outline of concepts, ideas and pioneers of personalism, thus making the background to illustrate the main thoughts of Polish philosopher. The meeting point for both matters – consumerism and personalism – is reference to John Paul II words that light problems of limitless consumption. Subject of the article is as current as the important for a proper understanding of the human person in postmodern world.

Rodzina jest miejscem, w którym człowiek odnajduje własną godność i uczy się miłości. Rodzina to także szkoła solidarności. Ochrona osoby ludzkiej i na nowo odkrycie jej przeznaczenia do transcendencji jest – według Karola Wojtyły – najważniejszym zagadnieniem współczesnej kultury. Papież podkreśla, że miłość małżeńska w communio personarum oznacza najwyższą formę miłości. Duchowy aspekt w rozwoju człowieka, a także doświadczenie miłości między ludźmi są bardzo ważnymi wymiarami w filozofii K. Wojtyły. W dzisiejszym świecie, w którym istnieje wiele zagrożeń dla integralności rodziny, Jan Paweł II ukazuje najbardziej pesymistyczny wymiar samoalienacji współczesnego człowieka, który sprowadza się do „kultury śmierci”. Z drugiej jednak strony – jak podkreśla Papież – tylko w rodzinie człowiek uczy się solidarności i może się w niej rozwijać kultura życia.
The family is a place where man discovers his own dignity, where he learns the meaning of love. Family is a school of solidarity. The defense and rediscovery of the human person and his/hers determination to transcendence is, according to Karol Wojtyla, the most important question of our culture. Conjugal love in the image of communio personarum, is presented as the most perfect form of love. Wojtyla tries to describe this shortened spiritualistic view in a human-friendly and family-friendly way. In Pope's philosophy, the experience of me-and-you love plays an extraordinary role. In today's threat to the integrity of the family John Paul II realizes the most fateful dimension of self-alienation of modern man and brings it to the formula „culture of death”. On the other hand, the family is „the place where the culture of life – a school of solidarity – is represented”.

The Author of the article describes the three years of his ministry in the years 1957–1960 as a parochial vicar in the parish of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Wadowice. He does this after almost 60 years, to leave testimony about the place of the birth and school years of St. John Paul II, the pope.The Author notes, first, that during his ministry the Wadowice parish has been enlarged beyond the city limits, including such villages as: Jaroszowice, Hobot, Zawadka and Tomice. Today, there are three new parishes, from which one is worthy of mention: it is the parish of St. Peter, the Apostle.A big part of the article Author devotes to the religious life of the parish, stressing that it was shaped by the Tridentine liturgy, before the Second Vatican Council. He lists the names of the priests, which in the period of Karol Wojtyla shaped his religious life. In 1958, Rev. Karol Wojtyla became auxiliary bishop in the Archdiocese of Krakow. The text describes the celebration of his first episcopal Mass and then his pastoral visit, which took place in Sept. 1959.
Autor artykułu opisuje trzyletni okres swojej pracy duszpasterskiej w latach 1957–1960 w charakterze wikariusza w parafii Ofiarowania Najświętszej Maryi Panny w Wadowicach. Czyni to po prawie 60 latach, by zostawić świadectwo o miejscu urodzenia i lat szkolnych św. Jana Pawła II, papieża. W tekście swoim ogranicza się wyłącznie do wspomnianych lat, nie pisząc o Wadowicach sprzed 1957 roku i po roku 1960.Autor zauważa najpierw, że w okresie jego pracy duszpasterskiej parafia Wadowice sięgała poza granice miasta, obejmując wioski: Jaroszowice, Hobot, Zawadkę i Tomice. Dzisiaj na terenie tejże parafii powstały trzy nowe parafie, z których na imienną wzmiankę zasługuje kościół i parafia pod wezwaniem św. Piotra Apostoła.Większość artykułu Autor poświęca religijnemu życiu parafii, podkreślając, że kształtowała je liturgia trydencka sprzed Drugiego Soboru Watykańskiego. Imiennie wymienia grono kapłańskie, które w latach pobytu Karola Wojtyły kształtowało jego życie religijne. W 1958 roku ks. Karol Wojtyła został biskupem pomocniczym w archidiecezji krakowskiej. W tekście są opisane jego prymicje biskupie i wizytacja duszpasterska, która miała miejsce we wrześniu 1959 roku.

The article aims at demonstrating that, by his teaching on human person and his action, St. John Paul II (also known as Karol Wojtyła) implicitly contributed to a resolution of the most serious problem of contemporary philosophy, which consists in separating wisdom from love and substituting wisdom with understanding or knowledge. The author concludes that John Paul II makes a persuasive contribution to recover philosophy as the love of wisdom by (1) identifying truth in the area of freedom, self-fulfillment and conscience, and (2) appealing to man’s honesty and happiness.

Opis:
The author’s aim in this article is to offer her own typology of biographies of Karol Wojtyła/Pope John Paul II and to conduct a bibliological evaluation of selected books published in Poland in the period between the Pope’s death and his canonization. The article registers and characterises publications both in the context of bibliology, by presenting such phenomena as the chronology and geography of publications, the most prominent publishers and authors, any subsequent editions, the publishing and formal features, artwork and layout of books; and also in terms of literary criticism, pointing to the comprehensiveness of the presentation of John Paul II’s life in Polish and foreign biographies. The purpose of the overview of these book publications was not only to compare and evaluate, but also to isolate those works which are worth recommending to educated readers and students. The study is another part in the series devoted to pope-related and papal literature.
