Opis:
The objective of this work is to analyze the impact of seasonality on the socio-economic development of rural areas of the southern part of Karelia. This study is based on the field data obtained via semi-structured indepth interviews with experts from the local community. The results show that the influence of seasonality is rather indirect, being a constituent of other factors: economic, infrastructural, institutional, social, etc. Although seasonality is most often perceived as a negative phenomenon regarding socio-economic development, modern types of economic activity characterized by a peak of activity in different seasons of the year mitigate the effect of seasonality and even benefit from being seasonal. Based on the materials collected, a typology of rural settlements of the southern part of Karelia based on the nature of the effect of seasonality has been developed (with a predominantly positive and predominantly negative effect).

The article shows the meanders of Bolshevik policy towards Karelia, a region on the Soviet-Finnish border: from the Karelian Worker’s Commune, through the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic to the Karelian Soviet Socialist Republic. This process was shown against the background of the then Soviet Center's policy towards small nations in northwestern Russia. Moscow's actions resulted in the Russification of the local Finno-Ugric people, and to the economic devastation of the Republic.

Krajobraz kulturowy Karelii jest nie tylko ważnym polem badawczym, ale także podstawowym elementem turystyki i przedmiotem ochrony środowiska naturalnego. Szansę wydobycia się z ekonomicznej zapaści władze Karelii widzą dziś w intensyfikacji ruchu turystycznego: nie tylko z Rosji, ale i z zagranicy – głównie z Finlandii. Niewątpliwą atrakcją jest tu nieskażona wpływem cywilizacji przyroda oraz zabytki architektury. Najcenniejszym i najpiękniejszym zabytkiem jest z pewnością zespół drewnianych cerkwi, kaplic i domów mieszkalnych na wyspie Kiży (na jeziorze Onega). Wyspa Kiży to ważny element krajobrazu, kultury i historii Karelii. Zespół cerkiewny Kiży został w 1990 roku wyróżniony wpisem na Listę Światowego Dziedzictwa UNESCO – m.in. za architekturę harmonijnie wpisaną w otaczający krajobraz.
The cultural landscape of Karelia is not only an important research field, but also the basic element of tourism and protection of natural environment. The authorities in Karelia see the chance for the region in intensification of tourism: from Russia, but also from abroad, mainly from Finland. The unquestionable attraction of Karelia is unspoilt natural landscape and historical architecture. The most valuable and beautiful monuments is the complex of wooden buildings: orthodox churches, chapels and houses on the Kizhy Island (on Lake Onega). This island is an important element of the cultural landscape and the history of Kare-lia. The complex of orthodox churches of Kizhy was added in 1990 to the UNESCO World Heritage List. One of the reason was that this historical architecture fits in the surrounding landscape.

Opis:
This article examines the development of tourism and recreation in the Finnish-Russian borderland as a new promising area of regional growth. The unique natural, historical, and cultural resources, and a favourable economic and geographical position are basic prerequisites for the development of tourism in the region. Historically, the barriers of state borders hampered the development of tourism; and tourism was seen as an activity bringing no economic benefits to regions since most Soviet citizens travelled as beneficiaries of social programs. As a result of the socioeconomic transformations in the Russian Federation, the openness of border regions under the influence of integration process taking place in the world community facilitates tourist mobility between neighbouring countries. The article describes an approach that considers the border regions of Northwest Russia as attractive destinations for tourists from neighboring countries. The author presents an approach that interprets cross-border tourist routes as an instrument for the conservation, reproduction, and promotion of natural, cultural, and historical heritage and as a means to boost business activities in border regions. The author analyses statistical and analytical data and does the content analysis of regional strategies for tourism and socioeconomic development. The article explores the practices of tourism and recreation development in a historical perspective and examines the effect of barrier and contact functions of state borders on tourism. The article identifies factors hindering tourism development and suggests measures to stimulate tourism as a regional economic activity.

The data on parasite fauna of brown trout Salmo trutta, whitefish Coregonus lavaretus, and grayling Thymallus thymallus from lake-river system Paanajarvi-Olanga (White Sea basin) are presented. As lake-river systems on this area remain in natural conditions, without any anthropogenic pressure, the parasite fauna of Salmonidae in these water bodies had not been changed and has an archetypal status.
