Among the various documents preserved in the community’s archives is a handwritten list containing the names, properties and professions of the Lutsk Karaites. Compiled in 1854, it provides data about various economic and social aspects of the community’s life in the mid-19th century. It is also a valuable source of information on anthroponomy and genealogy. In the article, the content of the manuscript is presented, as well as additional information obtained through a comparison with other sources.

These resources include Biblical manuscripts, works on Biblical exegesis and Halakhah (Jewish law), grammatical texts, letters on community affairs, wedding contracts and other important texts that shed much light upon Karaite religious observance, history, and culture. The aim of this paper is to present to the reader in a concise manner the facts regarding the development of the Karaite Jewish community in Israel in the 20th and 21st century. In addition, it endeavors to describe the relationship between the KaraiteJewish community and other communities, in particular the Rabbinate Jewish community in Israel and the USA.

After the Second World War Seraja Szapszała had intended to migrate to Poland but was prevented from doing so by the Soviet authorities and he continued to live in Soviet Lithuania instead. He worked for the Institute of History and Law in the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. He was also involved in preserving the Karaite past in Lithuanian lands. His efforts included opening an ethnographic museum in Trakai before WWII. Szapszał composed a letter to Stalin in which he hoped to protect his own life as well as Karaite ethnographic collections.

Przez stulecia udział karaimskiej kobiety w życiu społecznym był ograniczony. Dopiero w latach 20 XX w. powstała w Wilnie pierwsza karaimska organizacja kobieca. W 1932 r. Sabina Nowachowiczowa, nauczycielka, jedna z pierwszych Karaimek, które zdobyły formalne wykształcenie i pracowały zawodowo, założyła Koło Pań Karaimskich w Haliczu. Cele organizacji było podnoszenie poziomu świadomości członkiń, kształcenie ich w zakresie podstaw wiary, dziejów i języka Karaimów, a także zapewnianie im wiedzy ogólnej, tak by mogły przekazywać tradycyjne karaimskie wartości swoim dzieciom. Koło organizowało wycieczki, akademie upamiętniające ważne postaci z historii karaimów, prelekcje wygłaszane przez miejscowych działaczy i zapraszanych gości. Tematyka tych wystąpień była niezwykle szeroka i obejmowała różne zagadnienia, od zasad wiary i dzieł literatury karaimskiej po wykopaliska w Egipcie i zagadnienie niepodległości Krymu. W artykule zostają szczegółowo omówione różne aspekty działalności Koła na podstawie dokumentów z archiwum S. Nowachowiczowej.
For centuries women did not play an active role in the social life of Karaite communities in Poland and Lithuania. It was not until the 1920s that a Karaite women’s organisation was founded in Vilnius. Sabina Nowachowiczowa, a school teacher and one of the first Karaim women to receive a formal education, founded the Karaite Ladies’ Association in Halicz in 1932. The aim of the organisation was to raise the level of its members’ spiritual consciousness, educate them in the fields of faith and Karaim history and language, as well as provide them with general knowledge of the contemporary world in order to enable them to pass on traditional Karaite values to their children. The Association organised excursions, meetings to commemorate eminent Karaite figures, as well as lectures given by local scholars and invited guest speakers. The range of topics was very wide, encompassing everything from the principles of faith and notable works of Karaite literature to excavations in Egypt and the question of Crimean independence. In this paper I have analysed particular activities of the circle based on documents from Nowachowiczowa’s archive.

Pas Yeda’ and Massa’ ha-‘Am are two famous works by Avraham ben Yoshiyahu, mentioned in numerous publications, which were lost. The present article is devoted to these two works. It makes an attempt to explain the mystery of the “lost” Pas Yeda’ and it introduces an edition of the preserved passages of Massa’ ha-‘Am which have until recently been unrecognized. It also briefly depicts the preserved manuscripts and works of Avraham ben Yoshiyahu.

This article presents the content of two handwritten documents. The first dates from 1813 and concerns the power of attorney granted by the Troki community to Joachim Łabanos, the son of the last voyt (shofet) of the Troki Karaim so that the latter may represent the community before the courts and the authorities. It may be regarded as an attempt to restore to a certain extent the position of the voyt who after the partition of Poland had been deprived of those prerogatives granted to him by the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and the Kings of Poland. However, three years later the power of attorney was revoked and the blank pages of this document were reused to draw up a lawsuit filed by Łabanos against Judith and Joseph Firkowicz, Abraham Kobiecki and Joseph Kobiecki. Łabanos demanded compensation for expenditure he had incurred on preparations for his son Elias’ aborted marriage to Abraham Kobiecki’s daughter, Judith who instead of marrying the young Łabanos had run away with Joseph Firkowicz. These documents shed some light on the position of the Łabanos family after it lost its leading role in the Troki Karaim community.

Very little is known about the Karaite seals used during time of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The development of the administration in the Russian Empire forced Karaites to use these seals. However the new reality that emerged following the introduction of a new law in the Republic of Poland in 1936 offered them a chance to change some aspects of official Karaite iconography.

In this article, the author describes the nature of the 1840/1841 Turkic Karaim translation of the Bible, published at Gözleve / Jevpatorija, and especially, the translation of Nehemia, the last book in this publication. The author tries to identify the translator / copyist of Nehemia, who was working on the MS in 1672 in Mangup,having been based himself on the colophon, and surmised that the rest of the Bible translation may come from a MS copied by the same copyist. The author further speculates why the publisher of the Gözleve edition chose this particular MS. In order to define the Turkic language of the translation, the author goes in details about the earlier Jewish – both Rabbanite and Karaite – population of Çufut-Qal‘eh in the Crimea; his conclusion is that the earlier population was mostly immigrants from the North (the Duchy of Lithuania) and their language could not be originally any sort of Crimean Turkic. In the article, the author publishes and republishes different Judeo-Turkic Karaite Biblical translations and tombstone inscriptions.

The Heb 8°3652 manuscript from the National Library of Israel is among a collection of rare manuscripts from 19th-century Lithuania containing unofficial Karaite literature. These manuscripts, including the Abkowicz 3 and JSul.I.05 manuscripts, contain a vast collection of texts relating to the practical cabbala. Some of them are typical of divination and magic literature, and many resemble parallel texts from the Cairo Geniza in their form and contents. Their presence in Karaite manuscripts is exceptional for theological reasons. The Karaite translations of these texts were presented by professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski in the inter-war period as representative evidence of Karaite folklore and folk literature. This article includes an introductory presentation of the Heb 8.3652 manuscript.

Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest porównaniu postrzegania kobiety w przysłowiach karaimskich, tureckich i polskich. Takie zestawienie podyktowane zostało tym, że przysłowia zamieszczone w pracy A. Mardkowicza Karaim. Jego życie i zwyczaje w przysłowiach ludowych w rozdziale „O kobiecie i dziecku” posiadają swoje znaczeniowe odpowiedniki w zbiorach przysłów tureckich i polskich. Takie zestawienie wzbogaca także językowy i kulturowy obraz kobiety. Opisywana jest ona bowiem w oparciu o takie same kryteria. Zgromadzony materiał został podzielony ze względu na tematykę, jaką poruszają poszczególne wyrażenia. Ponieważ zgromadzone przez Mardkowicza przysłowia dotyczą także dziecka, oddzielna grupa poświęcona zostanie dziecku. I. grupa obejmować będzie przysłowia dotyczące postrzegania kobiety i jej charakterystyki, II. odnosić się będzie do kobiety jako matki, III. kobiety jako żony, IV. poświęcona jest rodzinie, V. dotyczyć będzie dziecka.
The aim of this paper is to discuss the way women are presented in Karaim proverbs compared with perceptions of women in proverbs in Turkish and Polish. This analysis is inspired by the fact that proverbs listed in Mardkowicz’s work Karaim. Jego życie i zwyczaje w przysłowiach ludowych (A Karaite. His life and customs in folk proverbs) in the chapter “On woman and child” can be matched with equivalents in collections of Turkish and Polish proverbs. In addition, such a recapitulative juxtaposition enhances the linguistic and cultural image of women, as they are described according to the same criteria. The material gathered here has been divided according to topics covered by expressions. The division into thematic groups is not a forced one but stems from the meaning of particular proverbs. As the proverbs collected by Mardkowicz also concern children, a separate group is devoted to children. The 1st group comprises proverbs dealing with perceptions of women and their characteristics, the 2nd group concerns women as mothers, the 3rd – women as wives, the 4th – the family, the 5th – children.
Niniejsza praca poświęcona jest porównaniu postrzegania kobiety w przysłowiach karaimskich, tureckich i polskich. Takie zestawienie podyktowane zostało tym, że przysłowia zamieszczone w pracy A. Mardkowicza Karaim. Jego życie i zwyczaje w przysłowiach ludowych w rozdziale „O kobiecie i dziecku” posiadają swoje znaczeniowe odpowiedniki w zbiorach przysłów tureckich i polskich. Takie zestawienie wzbogaca także językowy i kulturowy obraz kobiety. Opisywana jest ona bowiem w oparciu o takie same kryteria. Zgromadzony materiał został podzielony ze względu na tematykę, jaką poruszają poszczególne wyrażenia. Ponieważ zgromadzone przez Mardkowicza przysłowia dotyczą także dziecka, oddzielna grupa poświęcona zostanie dziecku. The article is a contribution to studies of Karaite education in Eastern Europe. It presents an unknown resolution of the Taurida and Odessa Spiritual Consistory dated to 1898, which approved a new system of education in the Karaite communities of the Taurida and Odessa Spiritual Consistory. It was a formal act which approved the transformation of Karaite education, which was gradually taking place in the second half of the 19th century, and its permanent re-alignment in relation to the Russian education system of that time. This resolution is important as it contributed to a decline of the Hebrew language and Hebrew literature in the Karaite community.

For many years, Karaite exegesis was relatively unknown to numerous Biblical scholars. This situation has been changing with an increasing access to source materials. As a result, more and more Karaite exegetical treasures representing the trends of Karaite Judaism have come to the fore. Among them, there is the Commentary on the Book of Hosea by Yefet ben Eli, one of the most significant representatives of Karaism in the tenth century. Yefet ben Eli exhibits a remarkable knowledge of Hebrew etymology, which enables him to provide unique answers to the interpretative problems in the Masoretic Text. His apologetic concern for prospective Muslim readers of his commentary is also noteworthy. Although, in general, Karaism sought to concentrate on the literal sense of the Scripture, Yefet ben Eli does not shy away from recourses to rabbinic oral tradition. Nevertheless, his exegetical contribution remains unique, as clearly demonstrated by the selected examples from his Commentary.

The Karaite language has justifiedly attracted the attention of Turkologists though it should also be of interest to students of Jewish languages (= the languages of Rabbanite and Karaite Jews); and what students of Jewish languages have to say about it should interest Turkologists, just as what the latter have to say should interest the former. By looking at Karaite (as exemplified in Michał Németh’s Unknown Lutsk Karaim Letters in Hebrew Script (19th–20th Centuries): A Critical Edition)from the viewpoint of other Jewish languages, researchers can: Add new questions to the agenda of Karaite research. For example, the existence of an idiosyncratic type of periphrastic verb in at least Karaite, Judezmo, Yidish, and Ultra-Orthodox Ashkenazic English prompts the question of what the genetic relationships between the tokens of that type are. Reopens old questions. For example, the derivation proposed for Karaite כניסא '[Karaite (and/or Rabbanite?)] synagog', with phonological variants, according to which the word comes from Arabic. The author proposes a different etymology (possibly not original with him) , involving only Jewish languages (a more appropriate derivation for a Karaite word having that meaning), which takes the Karaite word back to Hebrew and/or to Jewish Aramaic.

This article deals with Professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski’s work on the folklore of the Polish-Lithuanian Karaites before the First World War. Ananiasz Zajączkowski authored several articles in which he edited and/or described manuscripts in the Karaite language. These manuscripts, which included works on fortune-telling, magic and herbalism, originated in late 19th-century Lithuania. The article describes the genesis of works on Karaite folklore and challenges Ananiasz Zajączkowski’s thesis regarding the origins of the Turkic peoples. It quotes a number of Hebrew manuscripts kept in Karaite collections and proves that most of the works have been translated into the Karaite language.
