The paper presents a voice in the discussion on blaming the writer for orientalization of the USSR, i.e., purposeful presenting the Union in a pathologic, unbalanced way in order to enhance the status of the West, including Poland. This accusation, however, loses its strength when one juxtaposes the image of the USSR (as presented in The Empire) with the image of Poland in the 50s and 60s in the twentieth century which appears in the volume of domestic reportages entitled The Polish Bush. Kapuściński’s motherland is also presented as a country of fatalism, stagnation, superficiality of experience, lack of morality and sensitivity amongst the residents. If one finds it necessary to speak about „orientalization”, he/she should make a similar accusation against The Polish Bush or admit that the image described by the author shows only one aspect of the eastern empire. The aspect which is controlled by the ideology homo sovieticus. Closer analysis of Heban’s author’s text proves, however, that there is also the other, „different” Russia which has preserved in the USSR. It is the country when one can meet true Russians - open-minded, friendly, and ready to bear responsibility for Other, Different people.

Opis:
The power of language seems to come to the fore, especially in the media world in all its gradations. This paper discuses Polish-German headlines in press discourse concerning the scandalous biography Kapuœciñski non-fiction, with the aim to investigate the degree of explicitness in expressing criticism with the use of negative judgemental illocutions. The basis for the text-linguistic analysis is the illocution structural analysis method developed further by H. Lenk and adapted to analysing press headlines.  The article examines the usefullness of this method, pointing out its advantages and shortcomings, as well as other aspects, which can be meaningful while analysing theheadlines.

This article is about the reception of Kapuściński’s book Another Day of Life which was translated and published in Macedonia in 2017. This text explains the reasons of the delayed translation of Kapuściński’s book and the social environmentsurrounding its reception, as well as the reception of the reportage as a literary genre in Macedonia. Those are part of the reasons why this literary master has passed by almost unnoticed in this culture and his works are pushed aside from the main literary streams. The article also deals with translating problems concerning the alienation / otherness and the way foreign realities are transferred from Polish to Macedonian language.

The subject of this article is musicality in selected reportages and one poem by Ryszard Kapuściński. In the introduction there are few words about history of coexistence between music and literature. I stick to the point of view represented by Michał Głowiński, based on his article: „Literary music – musicality of literature”. Then I do a detailed analysis of selected works, where the musicality is clearly visible. The first of these reportages – Wymarsz piątej kolumny – treats about two German women looking for their home after war. Kapuściński presents them with accompaniment of unpleasant, war music, which is the main substance in his reportage. Lumumba is a text about the African leader Patrice Lumumba. He became famous, because he fought with the Belgian regime. In this reportage the musicality is visible in a description of a reconstruction of the recording, in which the politician gives a speech. I also describe a poem about Louis Armstrong trumpet. This poem tells about Kapuściński’s impressions after the Armstrong concert in Chartum in 1960. At the end of my article, I sum up my interpretations.

The paper aims to outline ways in which the category of sensitivity is perceived and valued in terms of a theory of modern reportage. Self-reflexive statements by such journalists as Ryszard Kapuściński, Wojciech Tochman and Jacek Hugo-Bader are analyzed, who throughout their professiographic reflections often return to this topic. The research reveals that the findings made by these journalists correspond to a significant extent with Susan Sontag’s conclusions in her book Regarding the Pain of Others. On the one hand, the reporters seem to treat sensitivity as a desirable attitude adopted by a journalist in his or her encounter with others, and on the other hand, as a quality that in some cases may stand in conflict with journalistic professionalism.

Ryszard Kapuściński, a worldwide-known, prize-winning writer, is also regarded as a controversial author. After his death there are still many people who question the value of his reportages and his credibility as a reporter. In this paper I want to examine the nature of his work on the example of The Emperor: Downfall of an Autocrat. I wish to focus on the way he decided to present his observations from his stays in Ethiopia in the 70s of the 20th century, as well as to find the reasons why he chose a particular writing strategy. This paper seeks to explain the phenomenon of these controversies which tend to place the author either in the world of literature or journalism, as in the title. Furthermore, I will briefly focus on the image of Haile Selassie and his authority as presented in the book. Ryszard Kapuściński described the Ethiopian ruler who already had a big influence on people who surrounded him as he had been on the throne for over forty years. The author of The Emperor examined the relations between those who worked on the court at the time as well. It seems that he found the principles that were followed both there and in the People’s Republic of Poland. In my study, I also want to rely on some other sources such as A Reporter's Self Portrait and Travels with Herodotus by Ryszard Kapuściński and Kapuściński Non-fiction by Artur Domosławski.
Ryszard Kapuściński, autor znany na całym świecie i zdobywca wielu nagród, jest też postacią kontrowersyjną. Po jego śmierci wciąż wiele osób kwestionuje wartość jego reportaży i jego wiarygodność jako reportera. W tym artykule pragnę przyjrzeć się twórczości autora na przykładzie powieści „Cesarz”. Skupię się na sposobie, w jaki opisywał wydarzenia, których był świadkiem podczas swoich pobytów w Etiopii w latach 70. minionego wieku, a także na powodach, dla których mógł zdecydować się na stosowanie wybranej strategii reporterskiej. Jak zasygnalizowałam w tytule, zastanawiam się też nad istotą kontrowersji wokół twórczości Kapuścińskiego (literatura czy dziennikarstwo?). Przyjrzę się również ukazanej w książce postaci cesarza Haile Selassie, którego wpływ na państwo podczas przeszło czterdziestoletnich rządów był potężny. Czytając „Cesarza”, w tym relacje pracowników cesarskiego dworu, ma się wrażenie, że Ryszard Kapuściński widział pewne podobieństwa między tamtym realiami a tymi panującymi w Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej. W tekście powołuję się ponadto na inne utwory Kapuścińskiego („Autoportret reportera” i „Podróże z Herodotem”) oraz „Kapuściński Non-fiction” Artura Domosławskiego.

Autorka w artykule identyfikuje ukryte odniesienia obecne w książce Ryszard Kapuściński. Z daleka i z bliska Marka Kusiby do biografii autorstwa Artura Domosławskiego. Naturalną konsekwencją tego podejścia analitycznego będzie zestawienie dwóch sposobów uprawiania biografistyki. Obaj autorzy napisali książki o Ryszardzie Kapuścińskim, przy czym Kusiba, wybierając formę gatunku zmąconego (hybryda biografii, autobiografii i pamiętnika), napisał swoją w aluzyjnej kontrze w stosunku do Kapuściński non-fiction. Potwierdził on tym samym tezę Beaty Nowackiej i Zygmunta Ziątka głoszącą, że nie sposób już mówić o słynnym polskim reportażyście bez odwołania się do sporu wywołanego biografią autorstwa Domosławskiego. Przedstawione zostaną spojrzenie Kusiby na kwestię granic uprawiania biografistyki oraz cele, dla których autor wybrał hybrydowy gatunek, pisząc o życiu i twórczości Kapuścińskiego.
The article constitutes a comparison of two ways of writing a biography on the example of Arthur Domosławski and the Marek Kusiba works. Both authors wrote the book on Richard Kapuściński, whereby Kusiba, choosing the form of blurred genre (the hybrid of biography, autobiography, and diary), created his own in allusive opposition to the Kapuściński non-fiction biography. He thereby confirmed the thesis of Beata Nowacka and Zygmunt Ziątek which states that it is impossible to talk about the famous reporter without making reference to the dispute generated by the biography written by Domosławski. The Kusiba’s view on the limits of the writing biography will be presented and aims for which the author chose the hybrid genre while writing about the life and work of Kapuściński.

The reporter confronts the images of revolutionary chaos in Iran with Iranian culture and its distant history to show the similarities in human mentality. The work aims to show a peculiar perspective of looking at photographs taken on the eve of the broadly understood disaster, which is specified in a slightly different way in each of the literary texts (Stefan Chwin’s autobiographical novel Krótka historia pewnego żartu [The brief history of a certain joke], a poem by Ryszard Kapuściński Na wystawie „Fotografia chłopów polskich do 1944 r.” [At an exhibition “The Polish peasants in photographs to 1944”] and Wisława Szymborska’s Fotografia z 11 września [Photograph from September 11]) – as death in a concentration camp, a general concept of the First World War or a terrorist attack. Upcoming tragic events – of which the photographed people are not yet aware – become for the subsequent recipient an inseparable element of reality contained in the frame. For the later observers, privileged with time perspective, the characters captured in the photograph are already victims of the catastrophe, which in reality was not yet recorded by the camera. It is a work about coexistence of the past and future in the field of photography.
