haskalá - Opis:
- In the second half of nineteenth century haskalá, an intellectual movement whose objective was to educate and westernize Easter European Jews extends to Sephardi communities in the Ottoman Empire. The activities comprise opening of La Alliance Israelite Universelle schools, but also lead to the emergence of secular publications, including newspapers in Ladino (or Judeo-Spanish). Such papers oft en featured literary texts that were translated or adapted Western novels. One of these text is a version of Jonathan Swift’s Gulliver’s Travels by Alexandr Ben Ghiat, a journalist, translator and novelist from Smyrna. Ben Ghiat’s original text, written in Hebrew characters, was transcribed into Latin alphabet by Olga V. Borovaia, who also authored its several analyses, within literary and Translation Studies frameworks. This article presents some amendments to the transcription and proposes adding yet another layer of interpretation of the text.
