Opis:
Pope John Paul II is definitely the greatest authority of modern times. As Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, he taught and educated the faithful. He issued a lot of magnificent Church documents: encyclicals, adhortations, apostolic letters that put the issues connected with religion in order and made one realize the need of proper opening to the world, man and God. With his personal behavior he gave a model of Christian life. The Holy Father was considered to be amaster and a „prophet” of our times. He always had the courage of unambiguously preaching Jesus Christ's message to the world. He conducted diverse and intensive apostolic activities. Analysis of John Paul II's statements and behavior shows that when carrying out the mission of evangelizing the world he had a very well thought out and consistent conception of education. Hence talking about John Paul II's own peculiar pedagogy is fully justified. The personalist-theological perspective is the basic element of this pedagogy. The chief thesis in the Pope's attitude towards education was accepting such an anthropology that considers both the positive elements of the human being (because he is a God's child), and his weaknesses, shortcomings, lack of order, which result from the original sin. In the process of education and self-education the human being is obliged by God Himself to realize in his life certain values, and especially: faith, hope and love. The basic aim of education is to develop the human being's subjectivity and to transmit the proper canon of values to him, including moral and religious values. First of all, the Pope wanted to direct man towards Christ, and to do this, besides his personal influence he used various external means, which he appreciated both in his teachings and in practice. Today it can be said that the fruit of John Paul II's pedagogical actions can be seen in many people's attitudes. The fact that many young people pronounce themselves in favor of the values accepted by John Paul II and that his attitude is meaningful is expressed in the movement defined as The John Paul II Generation.

Opis:
John Paul II in his magisterial writings and papal teaching many times referred to the human being, whom he presented in a personal category. At the same time insisted that the major problem of modern civilization is a the wrong anthropology, which denies the spiritual dimension of human being. This wrong approach brings in consequences an instrumental treatment and disgraced human dignity. The human being as a person has the special value that should be affirmed for his own sake, not for any other reason. The human as a being made in the image and likeness of God has a dignity of the person. John Paul II insists that a capacity for relationship with God is of the very essence of human being. God’s invitation to a shared life is a gratuitous, unmerited gift to man who from the beginning was made capax Dei. In these reflections, John Paul II offers many insights about the nature of human identity and dignity. The relationship between human being and God is a guarantee of his dignity. For this reason, anthropology cannot keep only on what is immanent in human being, but applies also to the transcendence. Anthropology disconnected from the transcendent becomes something deeply inhuman. Depriving humanity of its most important dimension also deprives it from its full personal dynamism. Therefore, it appears appropriate to take in this article the issue of transcendence of the person, which is the foundation of anthropology and pedagogy presented by Pope John Paul II. Firstly, the need for portraying the human person as physical and spiritual being will be argued for presented. Then the paper will study the genealogy of humans in communion with the family. In the last part, the marriage as a community of man and woman will be discussed.

Opis:
Cel. Materiały i metoda. Tekst ma charakter teoretyczny, przy czym jego konceptualizacja prowadzi do opracowania teorii pedagogiki i nawiązuje do fenomenologii oraz idei praktyki w działaniu. Wnioski. Katolicka nauka społeczna posiada ważny wymiar interdyscyplinarny. Dotyczy to szczególnie odniesienia i otwartości na wymiar pedagogiczny i edukacyjny. Skuteczność teoretyczna i praktyczna pedagogiki zakłada dialog i jej otwartość wobec innych nauk społecznych.
Aim. The article aims to carry out an in-depth analysis of educational contexts concerning Catholic Social Science by John Paul II, especially in some interpretive ways (comprehension), which have been created in recent years (in reference to pedagogy). Materials and methods. The study is purely theoretical. However, ideas presented in the article will lead to the development of a theory of pedagogy in relation to phenomenology and theory of practical action. Conclusion. The important aspect of Catholic Social Science is its interdisciplinary character. In particular, it concerns both reference and openness to educational and pedagogical aspects. The theoretical and practical efficacy of pedagogy provides a setting for a dialogue and openness toward other social sciences. John Paul II made Catholic Social Science part of moral theology by showing its normative foundations. Catholic Social Science has its impacts on social and educational processes when it is connected with individuals living in society and communal life. John Paul’s credits Catholic Social Science that he was able to bind together autonomy and interdisciplinary by pointing its personal orientation.

Opis:
The oldest civilized societies already knew that the national system of safety required places of isolation for those who committed acts which violated legal order. However, none of the first legal orders considered religion to have educational impact. The most important task of every priest offering their ministry in the isolation of prison is the conversion of those deprived of freedom. The reality in which they have to work may be compared to the Tower of Babel which brings together perpetrators of various offences. A man has always been brave, heroic and courageous but also weak “errare humanum est”. Sometimes a man breaks the law in such a way that they deprive themselves of the most precious thing, i.e. freedom. Every society is subject to political and economic considerations. The teaching of the Church also includes the image and understanding of a man. John Paul II very strongly supported this idea. For him, a man was the most important fundament of social life. According to him, the democratic order could not be based solely on the compliance with the law but it also had to take into account the concept of a man, their welfare and possibilities. Despite their downfall, prisoners do not lose their inborn dignity and they remain human. Their dignity needs to be respected, although it does not mean that their humanity is disrupted. Rehabilitation should make a man rediscover themselves and experience their dignity despite the fact that they had hurt somebody. In many cases the committed crime is irreversible, as no one is able to bring a man back to life or cure somebody who has been badly hurt. However, it does not mean that the improvement and conversion of an individual, a man, is impossible. In his teaching, John Paul II often pointed to the importance of a fundamental goodness which is present in every man. Despite a sin and an internal conflict a man cannot destroy it and, thanks to it, they are capable to differentiate between the good and the bad. The words of John Paul II, said to the convicted in the prison in Plock in 1991 during his 4th Pilgrimage to Poland, were of significant importance: “Each one of you may become a saint with the help of God’s grace”.

Opis:
The inquiry aims at indicating that the interpretation of Polish experience of multiculturalism performed by John Paul II may become an inspiration for intercultural education and comparative pedagogy of religion. This can occur mainly because the issue of particularity and universality, which is considered significant for research into intercultural education, is present in the interpretation of Polish experience of multiculturalism carried out by John Paul II. He combined Polish experience of multiculturalism with his own personal experience which shaped his identity as well as with moral experience and experiencing the Christian faith. For those who share axiological convictions promoted by John Paul II, his interpretation of Polish experience of multiculturalism has become crucial. They can see significant merits of the papal interpretation of the Polish ethos. If this interpretation is granted rightness, it acquires the qualities of an intellectually and morally important point of reference for the axiological and educational sense of Polish experience of multiculturalism. The issues of intercultural education and comparative pedagogy of religion were frequently undertaken by John Paul II. In his book Pamięć i tożsamość. Rozmowy na przełomie tysiącleci /Memory and Identity: Conversations at the Dawn of a Millennium/, in which John Paul II recapitulates his philosophical and theological considerations on culture, his convictions concerning Polish experience of multiculturalisms are also expressed: ‘Polishness is in fact multitude and pluralism, not narrowness and confinement. It seems, however, that this »Jagiellonian« dimension of Polishness [...] ceased to be, unfortunately, something obvious in our times’74. What is essential for intercultural education is the recognition that Polishness is marked by ‘multitude and pluralism, not narrowness and confinement’, because in this way axiological principles of shaping beliefs and attitudes in interpersonal relations are created in the complex situation of multiculturalism.

Opis:
The author begins with a question: who was John Paul II? First he makes a review of various terms used to describe the Pope-Pole. They are found in his many biographies, studies, albums, learned journals, press publications, radio and television broadcasts, and characterisation delivered at learned symposiums in Poland. The author closes this review with a statement that the personality and activity of John Paul II transcends the unambiguous terms used by contemporary journalists, politicians, biographers, and historians. He cannot be enclosed in one field of meaning, or even reduced to several terms. John Paul II spoke on the formation of teachers and educators, the necessity to prepare them for their job from many points of view and to equip them with educational and didactic skills. He spoke about the serious and subtle question of their vocation and even their apostleship, the necessity to fulfil essential tasks and the need to co-operate with their pupils' parents. These sentences, often quoted in the press, suffice to define the Pope as a good pedagogue, educator, and teacher both in theory and practice. Starting from the personalistic vision of man, supplemented by the axiological, normative, social and cultural, and religious approaches, John Paul II arrives the overall vision of Christian pedagogy. According to him, education is a continual process that encompasses the formation of personality and serves to build the civilisation of life, truth, and love. That process leads to a full mental development and to engagement in everyday matters. It takes places in various milieus: in the family, social groups, the nation, the state, and the Church. The figure of John Paul II can be seen here as: a teacher, theorist of education, visionary who shows the Church's stance on education, a pedagogue well-aware of the didactic methods and means by which to reach the listener, an author of the educational programme for a definite group of people, for families, and the whole nations. In his addresses, John Paul II presented many accurate social and pedagogical diagnoses. This his figure appears to be a foreseeing pedagogue, caring educator, lover of people, the one who sees their errors and weaknesses, but at the same time encourages them to positive actions, to demand of themselves, and to reach the long-term goals. The exceptional character of his life consists not only in the diverse form of his teaching. He also set on apostolic journeys and was an exemplary figure when he showed us how to suffer illnesses, and how he coped with the assault on his life. Journalists and biographers admired him for his words about God, man, societies, history, and the contemporary times. He regularly met with the suffering and the sick, talked with them, consoled brought, and administered the Holy Communion to them. Following the Pope's order, a “Gift of Mary” hostel for the poor was built in the Vatican. The Pope showed pedagogical and educational values. His addresses on pedagogical and social issues often encouraged people to action and released creative opportunities. He did not only appeal, instruct, and summon, but also provided funds for those societies who had suffered disasters, for the poor in Latin America, for the countries in Sahara struggling against drought. The teaching of John Paul II was the key element of his pontificate and an important chain in governing the Church. While responding to the questions whether John Paul II's teaching was accepted, the author points to various manifestations of how people approved of his pedagogy. These are, among other things, letters written to him, gratitude for counsels and guidelines, many books and albums with dedications, precious arts of work, artistic and useful products, liturgical garments and vessels, medals and numismatists. A large part of them is stored in Rome, in the Centre of the Documentation of John Paul II's Pontificate at via Cassia 1200, in the Vatican Museum and Library, and in other museum collections. All these gifts may be treated as a token of social approval and acceptance of his teaching, recognition of his views, attitude, or addresses. They were also given to show gratitude that he had visited a particular place in his Homeland, or hosted a delegation during the audiences. John Paul II influenced the masses of people and small groups, families, and the lonely. He encouraged them to creativity, to various activities, to show mutual help, and to kindness. Thereby he encouraged people to seek a more satisfactory model of life, in which activity, creativity, and solidarity would be basic elements.

Opis:
The historical development and theoretical specificity of pedagogy as it is practiced at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin is the subject of the article. The author describes the process of historical formation and development of the Institute of Pedagogy of the CUL that has been going on since Poland regained its independence, against the background of social changes. The author synthetically characterizes: the traditions of Polish pedagogy of the period of Partitions (1795-1918), the specific character of pedagogy in the period of the Second Polish Republic (1918-1939) and the achievements of Polish pedagogy after the Second World War. In an analytical way the process of development of pedagogy at the CUL is shown in the perspective of the formation of pedagogy as a science, both in the administrative and theoretical aspects. In the administrative aspect the achievements of the Institute of Pedagogy in the fields of research as well as of didactics have been presented. In the theoretical aspect a list has been compiled of the main research orientations (theoretical models) of modem pedagogy in Poland. Against this background an analysis has been made of the main categories of personalistic pedagogy characteristic of the CUL.
Przedmiotem artykułu jest rozwój historyczny i specyfika teoretyczna pedagogiki uprawianej w Katolickim Uniwersytecie Lubelskim Jana Pawła II.
