    The starting point of the article is locating Joanna Bator in the Polish literary field using Pierre Bourdieu’s methodology, and considering such elements as gender determinants, the author’s attitude towards the media and self-creation, and the time of the prose’s debut. The Nike Prize Bator was awarded in 2013, and not only did enable this author to maintain autonomy in her field, but also led to a change in poetics, i.e. a change in the dominant genre of her novel from magical realism to fairy tale. The article describes the conditions that influenced the transfer of the author by critics from the current of high and award-winning literature to the prose of the medium.

    Celem artykułu jest wstępne rozpoznanie tematu podróży w kobiecej twórczości eseistycznej poprzez analizę wybranych tekstów. Autorka koncentruje się na współczesnych niefikcjonalnych kobiecych relacjach z podróży i traktuje je jako indywidualny sposób realizacji wzorca narracji podróżniczej. W przypadku wybranych do analizy tekstów autorstwa Joanny Bator ich przynależność do eseistyki może budzić wątpliwości: bardziej pasuje do nich określenie „eseistyczne reportaże” czy „eseistyczne felietony”, co zresztą pozostaje w zgodzie z tezami o ekspansywności eseju i jego przenikaniu do innych gatunków. Utwory te sytuują się także na pograniczu literatury i antropologii: podróż jest okazją do obserwacji na tematy obyczajowe, kulturowe czy religijne.
    The aim of the article is to first recognize the theme of the journey in female essayistic work by analyzing selected texts. The author focuses on contemporary non-fictional women’s travel relations and treats them as an individual way of implementing a travel narrations pattern. In the case of texts selected by Joanna Bator for analysis in this article, their affiliation to essay writing may raise doubts: the term “essay reportages” or “essay articles” fits better, which is in line with the theses on expansivity an essay and its penetration into other species. These works are also located on the borderline of literature and anthropology: the journey is an opportunity to observe on moral, cultural or religious topics.

    Joanna Bator as a scholarship winner of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and the Japan Foundation visited Tokyo three times. Published in 2004 (reprint 2011), L’éventail japonais (ang. The Japanese Fan) is the result of Bators Asian travels. L’éventail japonais is a personal and subjective recording of the experience of cultural otherness that feels an European, Polish writer while working as a lecturer at the University of Tokyo. In this book, Joanna Bator use an original creative technique she calls: zuihitsu, ie “as the brush guides.” The book therefore constituted a sort of collection or set of travel pictures which emerge an image of Japan.The sentimental threads presents in the book serve as a pretext for further discussion concerning anthropological problems and constitute a record of experience of Ego Cogito in the foreign cultural system of signs.

    Autorka analizując w powieści Joanny Bator motywy gotyckie odnajduje niesamowite przedmioty jak klucz czy nóż. Jednak najbardziej przerażający wątek związany z „rozczłonkowaniem” ciała wałbrzyskiego proroka ze względu na ujęcie satyryczne pozbawiony został niesamowitości. Natomiast można się jej doszukać w motywach związanych z macierzyństwem.
    Analysing gothic motifs in Joanna Bator's novel, the author finds uncanny objects like a key or a knife. However, the most terrifying motif connected with the "dismemberment" of the body of the Wałbrzych prophet is deprived of the uncanny because of its satirical approach. However, it can be found in motifs related to motherhood.

    The myth of Polish Mother has a long tradition and it still influences the concept of motherhood in Poland. This paper is an attempt to show how two polish female writers analyse the problem of raped mothers and the further cir-culation of violence in the families and next generation. In her famous psycho-logical novel The Stranger Maria Kuncewiczowa shows a disturbet mother-daughter bound, Joanna Bator goes a few steps further an focuses on the second generation and other family members.

    The article is an attempt at presenting Joanna Bator’s novel Ciemno, prawie noc as a book belonging to engaged literature and using the popular convention to criticise society. The first part contains examples and theoretical considerations about the changes in the convention of the horror novel, which consists of a gothic novel with various genres such as horror, thriller and detective story. The matter of their social dimension was touched on, for instance, with reference to Noël Caroll’s theory, Scandinavian detective story or the books by Alice Munro. The second part of article is composed of the review of conventional implements used by Bator that are typical of gothic novel, detective story, horror and fairytale. The use of specific implements, their accumulation and the disturbance of the convention are interpreted as a way of getting the readers to loose the well-known schema and drawing their attention to the relevant social problems. The convention of popular literature in Ciemno, prawie noc is designed for something more than only entertainment.
    Artykuł stanowi próbę przedstawienia powieści Joanny Bator Ciemno, prawie noc jako utworu należącego do literatury zaangażowanej i wykorzystującego popularną konwencję w celu dokonania krytyki społeczeństwa. W części pierwszej znajdują się głównie poparte przykładami teoretyczne rozważania na temat przeobrażeń konwencji powieści grozy. Zalicza się do niej powieść gotycką z jej dalszymi odmianami gatunkowymi, takimi jak horror, thriller i kryminał. Kwestia ich potencjalnego wymiaru społecznego zostaje poruszona w nawiązaniu między innymi do teorii Noëla Carolla, kryminałów skandynawskich czy utworów Alice Munro. Na część drugą tekstu składa się przegląd wykorzystanych przez Bator konwencjonalnych narzędzi przynależnych do powieści gotyckiej, kryminału, horroru i baśni. Użycie określonego instrumentarium, jego nagromadzenie i zaburzenie konwencji jest zinterpretowane jako sposób na wytrącenie odbiorcy ze znanego schematu i zwrócenie jego uwagi na istotne problemy społeczne. Konwencja literatury popularnej służy w Ciemno, prawie noc czemuś więcej niż tylko rozrywce.

    Celem artykułu jest zbadanie recepcji prozy Joanny Bator w Szwajcarii w latach 2011-2016, gdy pisarka zaznaczyła swoją obecność dzięki udanym tłumaczeniom na język niemiecki jej trzech wałbrzyskich powieści: Piaskowa Góra, Chmurdalia oraz Ciemno, prawie noc. Dowodem uznania dla niej są liczne komentarze w prasie oraz dwa znaczące wyróżnienia z 2014 roku: nagroda szwajcarskiej krytyki literackiej Leuk oraz nagroda imienia Friedricha Dürrenmatta przyznawana przez Uniwersytet w Bernie.Uwagę czytelników przykuwa fascynująca fabuła, napisana z feministycznej perspektywy ze scenerią Wałbrzycha i historią wypędzonych w tle. Na plan pierwszy wysuwano łamanie przez autorkę różnorakich socjokulturowych tabu, w tym przekraczanie barier płci i rasy. Wysoko oceniano postmodernistyczną płynność łączenia różnorakich gatunków i konwencji literackich, plastyczność języka oraz pokonywanie granic czasu i przestrzeni. Zbadane wypowiedzi, przede wszystkim prasa codzienna oraz audycje radiowe i telewizyjne w wersji online, pozwalają stwierdzić, że twórczość Bator spotkała się z zainteresowa-niem oraz życzliwym przyjęciem zarówno wśród szerokiej publiczności czytelniczej, jak i krytyki literackiej. Można przypuszczać, że tutejszy rynek czytelniczy otwarty będzie na kolejne teksty autorki.
    Between 2011 and 2016, translations of three Waldenburg novels, Piaskowa Góra, Chmurdalia, and Ciemno, prawie noc, appeared successfully on the Swiss book market; the article aims to examine Joanna Bator's reception in Switzerland during that time. In 2014, Bator was awarded the Literary Award Leuk and the Friedrich Dürrenmatt Award from the University of Bern, which along with the addition of many positive critical reviews, indicate an overall appreciation for her literary output.While the Waldenburg scenery and the vicissitudes of the expellees create a remarkable background for Bator's gripping plots, her novels - written from a feminist point of view - break taboos. She is acknowledged as a writer who crosses sociocultural borders, including those of sex and race. Bator has been praised for her postmodernist skill in combining hybrid genres and literary conventions. Also, she has been highly praised for her adeptness in handling vivid language along with a notable ability at switching through levels of time and space.The online media and its feedback that have been observed and analyzed in this article indicate that Bator's Waldenburg novels have garnered both enthusiastic literary critics as well as readers. Therefore, it is very likely that in Switzerland the reception of Joanna Bator's next novels will be equally well-received.
    Der Text gibt einen Überblick über die Rezeption der Werke Joanna Bators in der Schweiz in den Jahren 2011-2016. Die Schriftstellerin markierte ihre Präsenz in dieser Zeitspanne dank den gelungenen Übersetzungen ihrer drei Waldenburger Romane Sandberg, Wolkenfern und Dunkel, fast Nacht. Die Anerkennung belegen zahlreiche Kommentare in den Medien und zwei Auszeichnungen von 2014: der Literaturpreis Leuk und der Friedrich Dürrenmatt-Preis der Universität Bern.Die Schweizer Leserschaft war von den aus feministischer Perspektive dargestellten Romanen beeindruckt. Im Hintergrund liegen die Waldenburger Landschaft und die Geschichte der Vertriebenen. In den Rezensionen rückte man Bators Fähigkeit in den Vordergrund, Tabus zu brechen und soziokulturelle, darunter auch Geschlechts- und Rasse-Grenzen zu überschreiten. Man schätzte ihre postmodernistische Art hoch ein, verschiedene Genres und literarische Konventionen meisterhaft zu verbinden. Die Aufmerksamkeit der Kritiker fokussierte sowohl auf Bators bildreiche Sprache als auch auf die Leichtigkeit, mit der sie Zeit- und Raumbarrieren überwindet.Die online-Recherchen in den Medien, vor allem in der Alltagspresse, in Radio und Fernsehen erlauben die Feststellung, dass Bators Schaffen sowohl von den Literaturkritikern als auch vom breiten Lesepublikum mit Interesse begrüsst wurde. Man kann annehmen, dass der Buchmarkt in der Schweiz für künftige Texte von Bator offen steht.

    Opis:
    The theory of conceptual integration / blending is a methodology that enables decoding of complex semantic structures. It not only allows to correctly read hidden meanings of polysemantic concepts, but also to analyse how these structures were created. The concept of blending is useful not only for researchers (especially in the interpretation of numerous cultural texts), but also for authors at the stage of creating their works. An appropriate process of blending guarantees the creation of new, original qualities resulting from a combination of several conceptual structures into one and it also enables the expression of ideas difficult to articulate. The examples of such multidimensional concepts can be found in the novels of Joanna Bator (the laureate of Nike Award in 2013), who (being a cultural expert and anthropologist) tackles in her works various philosophical or sociological issues. She presents her critical observations as specific - metaphorical, metonymic, symbolic and blended - images. This article provides several such examples in order to present how creating and reading blends is connected with “watching” and creative writing as well as sensual and rational exploration of things/meanings in culture.

    W artykule Recepcja twórczości Jenny Erpenbeck w Polsce i krajach niemieckojęzycznych przedstawiona została twórczość niemieckiej pisarki Jenny Erpenbeck z perspektywy literaturoznawczej i krytyki literackiej. Omówione zostały następujące aspekty utworów Erpenbeck: rozrachunek z przeszłością nazistowską (obecny zarówno w niemieckiej, jak i polskiej recepcji), rozliczenie z dyktaturą reżimu komunistycznego w NRD oraz problematyka współczesna (podejmowane głównie w recepcji niemieckiej). W artykule przedstawiono rozbieżności i podobieństwa w polskich i niemieckich przyczynkach literaturoznawczych i krytycznoliterackich poświęconych powieści Klucz do ogrodu (Heimsuchung). Uwzględnione zostały również analogie w przedstawianiu elementów świata powieściowego (rzeczy i ich funkcja w literaturze) u Erpenbeck i w utworach polskich pisarek Olgi Tokarczuk i Joanny Bator.
    The article entitled The Reception of works by Jenny Erpenbeck in Poland and in the German-speaking countries presents the artistic work of the German writer Jenna Erpenbeck from both the Polish and the German perspective. In particular, the article highlights those aspects of Erpenbeck’s works that could be of interest to Polish readers, such as coming to terms with the Nazi past, but also with the dictatorship of the communist regime and the contemporary problems. The Polish and German reception of Erpenbeck’s works focuses mainly on memoirs, the article presents similarities and differences in the Polish and German reception of, primarily, the novel Visitation (Germ. Heimsuchung), as well as the analogies in presenting the elements of the fictive world by Erpenbeck with those found in the works of Polish writers Olga Tokarczuk and Joanna Bator.
    Im Artikel „Rezeption der Werke Jenny Erpenbecks in Polen und den deutschsprachigen Ländern“ wurde das Schaffen der deutschen Schriftstellerin Jenny Erpenbeck aus der literaturwissenschaftlichen und literaturkritischen Perspektive dargestellt. Besprochen wurden folgende Aspekte der Romane Erpenbecks: die Abrechnung mit der Nazivergangenheit (präsent sowohl in der polnischen als auch in der deutschen Rezeption), die Bewältigung der kommunistischen Vergangenheit in der DDR und die aktuelle Problematik ihrer Werke (angesprochen vor allem in der deutschen Rezeption). Im folgenden Beitrag wurden Diskrepanzen und Ähnlichkeiten in den polnischen und deutschen literaturwissenschaftlichen und literaturkritischen Besprechungen dargestellt, die sich auf den Roman Heimsuchung beziehen. Berücksichtigt wurden auch Gemeinsamkeiten in der Darstellung der Romanwelt (Dinge und ihre Funktion in der Literatur) bei Erpenbeck und in den Werken der polnischen Schriftstellerinnen Olga Tokarczuk und Joanna Bator.
