    Tematem artykułu jest sytuacja kursów języka i literatury polskiej na uniwersytetach w Ameryce Połnocnej. Zmniejszająca się liczba studentów zainteresowanych zajęciami z kultury polskiej, będąca wynikiem wielu czynników, prowadzi do ograniczania kursów. Sytuacji nie pomaga łączenie wydziałów slawistycznych z germanistycznymi. W ostatnich latach wzrasta natomiast zainteresowanie tematyką polsko-żydowską, co może pomóc w rozwinięciu np. lektoratów językowych nie tylko jako kursów skierowanych do odbiorców poszukujących tożsamościowych wartości języka, ale także polszczyzny jako języka świadectw Zagłady Żydów.
    This article discusses the current situation of courses in Polish language and literature at North American universities. Diminishing interest in Polish culture, caused by a variety of factors, has resulted in limited offerings of courses on this subject. The common fusion of Slavic and German Departments in North America does not help to reverse this trend. In current years, however, there has been a growing interest in Polish-Jewish themes. This, in turn, might lead to a renewed interest in Polish courses; for instance, the Polish language can be taught not simply with heritage students in mind but also as an important language for reading Holocaust testimonies.

    Opis:
    The article concerns the traces of the Old Testament apocrypha IV Ezra in the Polish literature of the nineteenth century. It shows how the prose (novel Mirtala of Eliza Orzeszkowa) and Polish poetry (Ezra’s prayer of Maria Konopnicka and Ezra and Uriel of Stefan Witwicki) exploit issues evoked by the Biblical apocrypha and portray the figure of its author. The analyzed texts demonstrate that the Polish writers knew the Old Testament apocrypha and therefore it explains its presence in the Polish literary culture of the nineteenth century. An interesting issue is the question of how Polish culture absorbed the apocryphal book. Numerous textual and archival traces lead to French and German works, but an indication of specific sources is still a research task for biblical scholars and historians of literature.

    The article is an attempt of the semantic interpretation of the poem of Inna Lisnianska “Развалилось то, что долго длилось…”. It concerns the role of the Jewish Question in identity formation of the lyrical subject. I was preceded by a rough outline of the Jewish issue in Russian literature. The interpretation demonstrates that the drama of the tumble indicated in the title is opposed by the “elf” of the lyrical subject. That self was formed by the unity of blood, the unity of both cultures and both religions. It was formed by her cry — with all the blood (“всей своей кровью”), where Christian and Jewish elements merge.
    В статье представлена попытка семантической интерпретации стихотворения Инны Лиснянской «Развалилось то, что долго длилось…» с точки зрения еврейского вопроса в формировании личности лирической героини. Предшествует этому беглый обзор еврейской темы в русской литературе. В результате интерпретации доказано, что драме распада, заявленного в заглавии статьи, противостоит в данном произведении "я" героини, сформированное единством крови, единством двух культур, единством двух религий, и ее плачем — «всей своей кровью», в которой слились воедино еврейское и христианское начала.

    Opis:
    Yesterday Today: Memory of the War in Polish Contemporary Art after 1989 The purpose of this text is to attempt a synthetic portrayal of the issue of memory of the Second World War as a source of inspiration in Polish contemporary art since 1989. The year 1989, which marked the beginning of systemic transformation in Poland, was also the beginning of the process of transformation of the paradigm of collective memory of World War II. The appearance of issues omitted in the institutionalized discourse of the period of the Polish People’ s Republic contributed to an increase in artists’ interest in the mechanisms of constructing the collective image of the past. The particular ‘memory boom,’ which involved a sharp increase in the number of publications on so-called ‘white spots’ in the history of Poland, also manifested itself in the visual arts, among others, in the works of Mirosław Bałka, Zbigniew Libera, Wilhelm Sasnal, Piotr Uklański and Artur Żmijewski. Most of the works created in the 1990s and in the first decade of the 21st century concerned the memory of the Holocaust and Polish-Jewish relations during the German occupation. In many cases, the means of artistic expression employed by their creators evoked controversy and objections by those who found them inappropriate. The basic objections raised against artists referring to ‘war issues’ were: the instrumental references to the issue of the Holocaust, dictated by trends, and the lack of deep reflection on the attitudes of perpetrators, victims and witnesses of the events at that time. The fact that artists drew from collective images brought with it other effects also. Many works created in this period served the following functions: c a t h a r t i c – involving the purification through art of the recipient’ s feelings and emotions, h e u r i s t i c – resulting from treating creation and its outcomes as a research process whose important elements include the posing of hypotheses and their verification, m n e m o t e c h n i c a l – being an exercise in memory through the medium of art and, finally – c o m m e m o r at i v e, embedded – following Pierre Nora – in the era of commemoration and the call to remembrance. The manners of portraying themes of memory of the war in Polish contemporary art since 1989 seem to have confirmed the social aspect of artistic creation, involving – in the case being discussed – the exposing of, but also the formation of collective images of the past.
