Opis:
When looking at Eva Hoffman’s life story through Lost in Translation, it is evident that the word “translation” has two independent meanings. It is connected both with the emigration of her family to the New World, and with Hoffman’s identity and language change. The importance of learning a new language as a medium of translation to a new culture is strongly stressed by Hoffman. As being an immigrant was treated as just a brief interval in her life, she decided to translate herself entirely into English, even though different parts of her personality were still present, which was well visible when she asked herself the same questions in English and Polish and reached entirely different answers. The main goal for Hoffman appeared to be connected with obtaining a solid education in the New World, which she achieved by graduating from Harvard University. This was a confirmation of Eva Hoffman’s assimilationsuccess.
Patrząc na historię życia Ewy Hoffman poprzez pryzmat Lost in Translation, oczywiste jest, że słowo "tłumaczenie" ma dwa niezależne znaczenia. Związane jest to zarówno z emigracją jej rodziny do Nowego Świata, jak i z przemianą tożsamości i języka Hoffman. Doniosłość opanowania nowego języka jako medium przejścia w nową kulturę jest mocno podkreślana przez Hoffman. Jako że bycie imigrantem zostało potraktowane jako krótka przerwa w swoim życiu, zdecydowała się ona całkowicie przejść na angielski, mimo że wciąż obecne były w niej różne osobowości. Było to szczególnie dobrze widoczne, gdy zadawała sobie te same pytania po angielsku i po polsku i osiągała zupełnie inne odpowiedzi. Główny cel Hoffman wydawał się być związany z uzyskaniem solidnego wykształcenia w Nowym Świecie, które zdobyła dzięki ukończeniu Uniwersytetu Harvarda. Było to potwierdzenie sukcesu asymilacyjnego Ewy Hoffman.

In my paper I tackle the issue of the cultural self-image of the East European Jew. I provide a critical analysis of a number of texts, of different kinds and bents – confessional, literary, historical, political – to demonstrate the paradoxes and contradictions of Jewish identity. Noticing the bi-polar paths of Jewish self-interpretation (as exemplified, for instance, by Heschel and Szahak), neither free from the subjective and emotional trends, I argue for the truth closer to those views which acknowledge the religious specificity of the Jewish nation as the chosen people. Regardless of multiple contexts worth considering and at work, the essence of Jewishness dwells in the religious feeling.

Opis:
Formation of agricultural education in high schools was a milestone in the early 20th-century history of Zionist education, and in the Jewish society in Mandatory Palestine in general. Agricultural education was a means of changing the character of the Jewish people by imparting agricultural knowledge and training. Candidates came from agricultural settlements, but mainly – and this was its uniqueness – they also came from the towns. In addition, agricultural education provided a framework for absorbing immigrant youth. This educational framework was, among other things, ideological because those who joined it were usually motivated by a desire to change the character of the Jewish society, return to the land and work it. The cost of funding agricultural schools was high for the local Jewish community, and therefore these schools remained dependent on private initiative and philanthropy. In spite of the widespread ideological support, not many students actually took part in agricultural education due to the high cost of tuition on the one hand, and the need to help support their own families on the other. It can also be said that during this period, parents who had the means to provide their children with higher education, favoured the “Gymnasium” high school model, which could lead to them engaging in other professions.

Tottenham Hotspur football fans are victims of regular antisemitic abuse from opposition fans. They are commonly referred to as “Yids.” Interestingly, Tottenham supporters appropriated the Jewish image and embraced it as part of their fandom identity. They have been using symbols and content associated with Jewish identity, even if their club has never been a Jewish organization, and the vast majority of them are not Jewish. The objective of this paper is to describe and explain the main characteristics of the phenomenon of what I call the “Jewish identity” of the fans. The research presented in this paper was based on sociological and anthropological qualitative methods; above all—in-depth interviews with the fans and participant observation in the stadiums during Tottenham games. The analysis and interpretation of the material collected for the study allowed me to explore the questions of “how,” “why,” and “what” happens in the stadiums (and outside the stadiums) from the perspective of the fans in the context of their “Jewish identity.” I particularly focus on the mechanism Tottenham supporters use to manage and fight stigma and investigate how different groups of fans have created different narratives around Jewish identity to make it meaningful for them.

The article discusses the subject of conversion as a subject of poetry on the example of the work of Roman Brandstaetter. It focused on the post-war creativity of the author, who in 1946 officially abandoned Judaism, received baptism and became a Catholic. Focused on two aspects of conversion. First of all, these were the circumstances of life: the need to leave the country, problems related to the Polish-Jewish identity, death of parents, parting with the first wife. Secondly, these were issues related to the biblical experience of God, because reading the Bible had a great significance for the poet since the time of Polish studies. Confirmations of the issue are confirmed by quotes from works that are testimonies of changes taking place in the author’s life, making up a rich picture of his spiritual transformation.

Julian Tuwim belongs to the pantheon of the greatest Polish writes of the 20th century. His Polish-Jewish descent, his attitude towards the Polish language, towards Jews in Poland, his political activities as an emigrant as well as his controversial involvement with the communist Poland still fuel many critical discussions. Polish language and culture were for him much more important than the categories of nation or state. However, whereas for Polish nationalists and antisemites Tuwim remained “only” a Jew, Jewish nationalists considered him a traitor. It was in exile that his attitude towards his Jewish countrymen began to change, especially after he learnt about the horror of the Holocaust in occupied Poland. Thus, he began writing his famous, dramatic manifesto, We, the Polish Jews. After World War II, Tuwim came back to Poland, hoping to continue his prewar career as a celebrated poet. His manifold contributions to the development of the Polish language and literature, within the country and abroad, cannot be questioned, and the dilemmas concerning his cultural and ethnic identity only make him a more interesting writer. This paper tries to follow the traces of this “wedge” in Tuwim’s works: from poems supposedly having nothing to do with the “Jewish question”, to encrypted allusions to the great Yiddish writers, from his relentless questioning of all forms of intolerance and nationalist rhetoric, to his conviction that a new poetic language could “reform the world” and become a homeland for all readers regardless of their nationality.

Antisemitism has unfortunately persisted throughout history, and the COVID-19 pandemic has not been an exception to this troubling trend. The conditions created by the pandemic, such as fear, uncertainty, and anxiety, have fueled the emergence and spread of conspiracy theories targeting various groups, including Jewish communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a plethora of baseless beliefs and conspiracy theories about its causes, which have contributed to the rise of antisemitism during this time. Pandemics, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inherently create anxiety and uncertainty among populations. This change has affected many areas, both political and social. Conspiracy theories that base the cause of the emergence of COVID-19 on Jewish identity are an essential factor for this study. Tendencies toward antisemitism and scapegoating have supported these conspiracy theories. In this study, how antisemitism manifested itself in media and online discourse during COVID-19 and how Jewish identity is affected by the process.

This article focuses on Seweryn Pollak’s poetry, despite him being known first and foremost as an essayist and translator. Although meeting mixed and negative reviews (including his own), Pollak’s poetry is not only a space where personal and fascinating accounts, memories, conversations with the loved ones, and farewells collide, but also the precise genre which the author chooses to talk of his Jewish ancestry, which is left unmentioned in his narrative works, including those addressed to his family and friends. Among Pollak’s poems, there are texts devoted to the Shoah that actualise the sense of danger and alienation; these painful recollections, although dictated by fear, happen to be the poems where self-reflection becomes sharp and thorough, whilethe poetic persona – predominant. Searching for an insightful perspective on Pollak and his work, this article turns to his captivating handwritten texts with a special emphasis put on the collections of letters exchanged between him and his wife, Wanda Grodzieńska.  
Artykuł przybliża sylwetkę Seweryna Pollaka, znanego przede wszystkim jako tłumacz i eseista, oraz koncentruje się na jego twórczości poetyckiej. Liryka autora Wypraw za trzy morza, oceniana różnie, często krytycznie (również przez niego samego), jest miejscem niezwykłych, osobistych wyznań, wspomnień, rozmów z najbliższymi i pożegnań. To tu, w poezji, Pollak mówi także o swoim żydowskim pochodzeniu, o którym milczy w tekstach prozatorskich, nawet adresowanych do bliskich. Istotne miejsce w lirycznych tomach Pollaka zajmują wiersze zawracające ku Zagładzie, aktualizujące poczucie zagrożenia i obcości. W utworach rozdrapujących rany pamięci, dyktowanych przez lęk, rozpoznanie siebie jest przenikliwe i śmiałe, a poetyckie „ja” –  najwyraźniejsze. Poszukując możliwie szerokiej perspektywy dla przedstawienia Pollaka, autorka odwołuje się do interesujących materiałów rękopiśmiennych – zwłaszcza do tomów korespondencji poety z żoną Wandą Grodzieńską.

Artykuł przybliża sylwetkę Seweryna Pollaka, znanego przede wszystkim jako tłumacz i eseista, oraz koncentruje się na jego twórczości poetyckiej. Liryka autora Wypraw za trzy morza, oceniana różnie, często krytycznie (również przez niego samego), jest miejscem niezwykłych, osobistych wyznań, wspomnień, rozmów z najbliższymi i pożegnań. To tu, w poezji, Pollak mówi także o swoim żydowskim pochodzeniu, o którym milczy w tekstach prozatorskich, nawet adresowanych do bliskich. Istotne miejsce w lirycznych tomach Pollaka zajmują wiersze zawracające ku Zagładzie, aktualizujące poczucie zagrożenia i obcości. W utworach rozdrapujących rany pamięci, dyktowanych przez lęk, rozpoznanie siebie jest przenikliwe i śmiałe, a poetyckie „ja” –  najwyraźniejsze. Poszukując możliwie szerokiej perspektywy dla przedstawienia Pollaka, autorka odwołuje się do interesujących materiałów rękopiśmiennych – zwłaszcza do tomów korespondencji poety z żoną Wandą Grodzieńską.

One of the prerogatives of our time and place has been a protracted search to integrate Western artistic aspiration within a context of Jewish identification – a quest to find the indwelling spirit within contemporary and traditional compositional ethos and technique, content and form. Shared is an awareness of the tension between tradition and innovation, and the motivation to bring a timeless perspective to the fractured state of contemporary consciousness. This paper focuses on music as an art form and as an experiential educational medium in the renewal of an ingathered people who aspires to understand and walk in the ways of God, but isn't quite sure how this vision and ideal is to be realized as ancient sources of inspiration impose themselves upon against a backdrop of horror and despair.

The aim of the paper is to present the dramatic works of Sholem Asch with reference to the basic characteristics of the Young Poland period “interior drama”, further specified by Jerzy Waligóra as a manifestation of the processes of drama subjectivisation in the late 19th/early 20th century. Departing from the traditional perception of Asch’s dramatic works in the context of the literary heritage of the Polish-Jewish borderlands or the modernist symbolic drama makes it possible to interpret his works as identity drama, based on the need to choose between what was and what will be, between the past with its tradition on the one hand, and the present with the related modernity on the other hand.
