The article discusses the issue of Jewish secular identity. Drawing on the studies of Irena Hurwic-Nowakowska, Konstanty Gebert and Heleny Datner, as well as own research, the author demonstrates the specific identity of a number of Polish Jews, whose notion of Jewish identity is not founded on religion but rooted in the broadly understood Jewish heritage.

Holocaust teaching is a foundation for deepening Jewish identity. Despite the stated goals of the trips to Poland, studies involving participating youngsters indicate that Holocaust education per se does not significantly affect their sense of Jewish identity. Nonetheless, Holocaust teaching through the journey to Poland enhances participants’ self-concept as Israelis, possibly because their Israeliness is associated with emotions such as power, pride, and hope. In view of these findings, the aim of this study is to examine whether and to what degree faith plays a role in the Holocaust teaching that is part of public and public-religious schools’ efforts to reinforce Jewish identity.

Opis:
The aim of this paper is to contribute to the question of Jewish identity in the Second Temple Period through the perspective of the conversion of the royal dynasty from Adiabene. In this context, several conclusions are suggested. First, the main ancient account about the conversion of the Adiabenean royalty (“the Adiabene Narrative”: Ant. 20,17-96) perfectly fits the model of ethnicity (D. Boyarin, S. Mason). Although the model of dual (multiple/nested) ethnicity trips over the “breaking motif” of the Adiabene Narrative, it remains a very plausible option, especially in the light of other sources that show how the Adiabenean kings continued to properly function in the Parthian kingdom. Finally, the available sources do not contain direct evidence to support the model of conversion as a purely religious process.

Opis:
Twentieth-century events in Russia and Eastern Europe resulted in complex definitions of Jewish identity and communal relations. When the Soviet Union disbanded, foreign agencies pushed funds and resources to rebuild Jewish communities and institutions. One of the avenues for this funding is the creation and support of academic research centers responsible for training students and scholars. Organizations interested in Russia’s “unaffiliated Jews” and the research centers responsible for the revival of Jewish Studies form unique partnerships that bridge academic and public arenas. Reclaiming Jews who do not identify with Judaism or Jewish culture (unaffiliated Jews) in Russia is a significant goal of some Jewish funding agencies in the United States and Israel. An examination of mission statements by these philanthropic agencies reveals narrow definitions of “Jews” that ignore major contributions from Jewish Studies scholars focused on understanding a diverse population with disparate self-understandings.

Tottenham Hotspur football fans are victims of regular antisemitic abuse from opposition fans. They are commonly referred to as “Yids.” Interestingly, Tottenham supporters appropriated the Jewish image and embraced it as part of their fandom identity. They have been using symbols and content associated with Jewish identity, even if their club has never been a Jewish organization, and the vast majority of them are not Jewish. The objective of this paper is to describe and explain the main characteristics of the phenomenon of what I call the “Jewish identity” of the fans. The research presented in this paper was based on sociological and anthropological qualitative methods; above all—in-depth interviews with the fans and participant observation in the stadiums during Tottenham games. The analysis and interpretation of the material collected for the study allowed me to explore the questions of “how,” “why,” and “what” happens in the stadiums (and outside the stadiums) from the perspective of the fans in the context of their “Jewish identity.” I particularly focus on the mechanism Tottenham supporters use to manage and fight stigma and investigate how different groups of fans have created different narratives around Jewish identity to make it meaningful for them.

The article discusses the subject of conversion as a subject of poetry on the example of the work of Roman Brandstaetter. It focused on the post-war creativity of the author, who in 1946 officially abandoned Judaism, received baptism and became a Catholic. Focused on two aspects of conversion. First of all, these were the circumstances of life: the need to leave the country, problems related to the Polish-Jewish identity, death of parents, parting with the first wife. Secondly, these were issues related to the biblical experience of God, because reading the Bible had a great significance for the poet since the time of Polish studies. Confirmations of the issue are confirmed by quotes from works that are testimonies of changes taking place in the author’s life, making up a rich picture of his spiritual transformation.

Antisemitism has unfortunately persisted throughout history, and the COVID-19 pandemic has not been an exception to this troubling trend. The conditions created by the pandemic, such as fear, uncertainty, and anxiety, have fueled the emergence and spread of conspiracy theories targeting various groups, including Jewish communities. The COVID-19 pandemic has triggered a plethora of baseless beliefs and conspiracy theories about its causes, which have contributed to the rise of antisemitism during this time. Pandemics, including the COVID-19 pandemic, inherently create anxiety and uncertainty among populations. This change has affected many areas, both political and social. Conspiracy theories that base the cause of the emergence of COVID-19 on Jewish identity are an essential factor for this study. Tendencies toward antisemitism and scapegoating have supported these conspiracy theories. In this study, how antisemitism manifested itself in media and online discourse during COVID-19 and how Jewish identity is affected by the process.

Tuwim’s approach to the “Jewish question” has already been analyzed by Polish and foreign scholars. The article is intended to consider some “survival strategies” of the Polish poet from a slightly different angle. In Poland, in the period between the wars Jewish writers were persuaded to accept total polonization and a rejection of their ethnic identity; yet, at the same time they often suffered a rejection from the circles of Polish artists. Any attempt of highlighting their Jewish identity or even a slight interest in Jewish culture incited brutal Jew-bashings. Tuwim considered his being a Polish Jew not only as a fact to be proud of, but also as an opportunity for engaging with self-criticism. He painfully felt the Jewish question as “a powerful wedge cleaving [his own] worldview”. However, like many other Polish- Jewish writers he masked its enduring presence in his own psyche, constructing his public persona through a process of self-fashioning. This paper tries to follow the traces of this “wedge” in Tuwim’s works: from poems supposedly having nothing to do with the “Jewish question”, to encrypted allusions to the great Yiddish writers, from his relentless questioning of all forms of intolerance and nationalist rhetoric, to his conviction that a new poetic language could “reform the world” and become a homeland for all readers regardless of their nationality.

The paper analyzes the images of the Jewish pohrom in the short stories written by a Polish writer Maria Konopnicka “Mendel Gdański” (1890) and by the Ukrainian writer Leonid Pakharevsky “The Father” (1906). The research is made within a framework of comparative analysis. Both authors depict pohroms with an image of an old Jewish man caring for his children or grandchildren. In the wake of anti-Jewish riots the protagonists are undergoing deep personal changes. Mendel loses his love for his city, while Leisor loses his passionary illusions and became involved in an armed struggle for freedom. Konopnicka focuses on the natural belonging of the Jewish population to Polish society and more broadly to the Eastern European multicultural space. Pakharevsky outlines the generation gap. While the older Jews accepts death without resistance, guided by faith in the promised biblical land, the younger Jews denies these illusions and defends their life resolutely. In addition, Konopnicka and Pakharevsky are looking for preconditions for the pohrom. According to them, the only reasons are social prejudices, stereotypes, as well as a criminal factor, to wit the role of criminals and lumpen in anti-Semitic actions. Both short stories use the technique of instilling a sense of danger, although Pakharevsky’s story begins with a scene of fire and a direct attack. Eventually, the pohroms indeed lead to a real escalation of hostility and a painful rift between the Jewish and non-Jewish worlds. In closing, these stories are not only about the genesis and the course of anti-Semitic pohroms, but also universal categories. Importantly, the process of self-determination of the Jewish people nowadays and the renewal of Jewish identity are intelligently represented here.

This article aims to sketch out the Jewish-Polish identity of a prominent Jewish actor and director, Zygmunt Turkow (1896–1970). A summary of the nature of Jewish identity is followed by a study of his memoirs Fragmentn fun mayn lebn [Fragments of My Life] (1951) from the period of 1896–1916. Drawing on Cultural Literacy (Segal 2014), the study focuses on the methods and thoughts of Roland Barthes ([1967] 1985) on urban space. The main section of this paper includes an overview of the places and institutions in Warsaw that Turkow mentioned in his memoirs. All the addresses are ascribed to four social categories (home and friends, religion, education, and freetime) and then discussed. The final section contains research conclusions on Turkow’s selfhood, his sense of Jewish and Polish identity, and his attachment to Jewish or Polish culture, as well as the defining characteristics of his Polish-Jewish/ Jewish-Polish self-identity. This article aims to explain the peculiar circumstances that contribute to the complexity of determining and investigating what can be considered as Jewish identity.

The sketch presents images of God emerging from J. Stryjkowski's works. The divine subject could be contained between the image of a domineering dwarf that is formed by man's fear and desires (such is the demonic Jahu in the drama Sodoma) and the picture of impersonal Law, a strict and ruthless Code (this, in turn, is JHWH in Odpowiedź «Reply»). The central vision is an image of a deity being an absolute plenitude, good and evil, but with emphasis on anxiety, darkness, silence and injustice. A search for a milder version of Judaism leads the writer to the vicinity of Christianity: e.g. Amos, the protagonist of the novel Juda Makabi is equipped with evangelical traits of personality. Ultimately, however, in Stryjkowski's works a denominational “fusion of horizons” is not effected (like e.g. in works by R. Brandstaetter), and the postulate (found as soon as at the beginning of his career) to remain faithful to the Jewish nation remains the writer's basic inner obligation.

Julian Tuwim belongs to the pantheon of the greatest Polish writes of the 20th century. His Polish-Jewish descent, his attitude towards the Polish language, towards Jews in Poland, his political activities as an emigrant as well as his controversial involvement with the communist Poland still fuel many critical discussions. Polish language and culture were for him much more important than the categories of nation or state. However, whereas for Polish nationalists and antisemites Tuwim remained “only” a Jew, Jewish nationalists considered him a traitor. It was in exile that his attitude towards his Jewish countrymen began to change, especially after he learnt about the horror of the Holocaust in occupied Poland. Thus, he began writing his famous, dramatic manifesto, We, the Polish Jews. After World War II, Tuwim came back to Poland, hoping to continue his prewar career as a celebrated poet. His manifold contributions to the development of the Polish language and literature, within the country and abroad, cannot be questioned, and the dilemmas concerning his cultural and ethnic identity only make him a more interesting writer.
The aim of this article is to remind the figure of the Polish-Jewish poet of the Warsaw Ghetto, Władysław Szlengel, and to show his complex identity. Considering the problem of the poet's marginal presence in the canon of Polish culture, I attempt to reread his poem The window to the Other Side, situating him within the context of romantic influences and other contemporary texts. The purpose of the reading is to better understand the identity of Szlengel as a representative of the Polish-Jewish intelligentsia, one of the generation of Jewish Kolumbowie, who suffered because of their marginalization and rejection in the culture they considered their own. I refer to this self-awareness, following Hanna Krall, as subtenant's identity.

Opis:
The work of Henryk Grynberg is an example of the nostalgia of individual experi-ence, which was determined by traumatic war experiences. The author, as an adult man, returns the same way back to his childhood. The past is what Grynberg is constantly struggling with. The writer recreates the past by restoring the image irretrievably lost. In Sielanka Siaj’s story, Grynberg recalls the world of childhood before the war, this is the only text of this author presenting a picture of joyful childhood. In this piece important fragments of stories about the announcement of the catastrophe, which was the holo-caust, are highlighted. The Holocaust, which is the background of the story, is expressed in subtext, and remains almost invisible. The fate of the main character will continue in the novel entitled The Jewish War, but still, in there, a small boy will experience dilemmas of identity. The whole novel deals with the fate of the Jewish family during the German occupation of Poland. The book was divided into two parts, which follow in chronological order according to the events. Why was the story of the fate of one Jewish family divided in such a way? It is because there were two different ways to save yourself from oppression at the time described. The differences in opinions were visible among people close to the narrator: husband and wife, father and mother. The Jewish War is a tragic story, because it shows the difficulty of the choices, the moral dilemmas that take place in the minds of the characters in the novel. The whole life of the characters portrayed was a lie, a mystification. Not only were their words untrue, the greatest fraud was their very existence at that time. The autobiographical text is portraying the paralyzing fear of the past. We have the right to interpret the texts of Grynberg at three possible levels: personal experiences, generalized form of the fate of the Jewish people and existential reflection, which seeks terms for man in general. Both novels belong to the second wave of postwar literature. In this context, the authors attempted to capture the realities of the war in the perspective of the passage of time. Those authors wrote the main topic as a record of the artistic process, not to describe their own experiences, but to formulate deep judgments based on polemic despair caused by the holocaust.

The article explores Rosa Luxemburg’s background, youth and family and their influence on her Polish and Jewish identities, as well as on her views on the Polish and JewishQuestions. It examines the views of Luxemburg’s father and grandfather, as well as other relatives, in order to understand the origins of her own ideas about Jewish assimilation, Polish nationalism and other subjects. Addressing the lack of scholarship on this subject by Luxemburg’s biographers, the article uses recent studies, newly available archival material and extensive interviews with members of theLuxemburg family to offer a new interpretation of the origins of Rosa Luxemburg’s Polish-Jewish identity.

Opis:
The paper deals with biographical, ideological and artistic links between Julian Tuwim, Alfred Döblin and Kurt Tucholsky. On the one hand, the basis of comparison are biographical similarities, the Jewish origin of those three writers, their family dramas, the experience of politically opressive school, the trauma of revolution or war, and the exile to name just a few. On the other hand, the article demonstrates the ways the modernity has influenced the attitudes and texts of Döblin, Tucholsky and Tuwim. While talking about modernity, the author focuses on such phenomena as secularisation and urbanisation processes, mass political movements, and new cultural challenges.Tuwim, Döblin and Tucholsky were born into assimilated Jewish families. Their perspective on the stereotypical Jews (the orthodox Jews as well as Jewish bankers or manufacturers) is marked with antipathy, or even contempt. The writers’ ambivalence towards the diapora and towards their own origin illustrate “Jewish self-hatred”; however, all three authors change their opinion on Jewry in the face of the growing anti-Semitic and Nazi danger, and especially the Holocaust. Döblin is proud of being Jewish after his visit to Poland in 1924, Tucholsky warns German Jews against the consequences of their passivitivy, and Tuwim publishes in 1944 his agitating manifesto We, Polish Jews. Last but not least, the three authors go into exile because of their Jewish ancestry and sociocultural activities. Therefore, it is no coincidence thatone cannot help having associations with Heinrich Heine: his biography can be interpreted as a prefiguration of a Jewish artist’s biography.Furthermore, Tuwim, Döblin and Tucholsky are notably sensitive to social questions, and their sensitivity to such issues results to some extent from their difficult childhood and youth. Especially significant seem in that respect family conflicts and the moving from city to city, since such experiences increase the feeling of loneliness and the vulnerability to depression. Nevertheless, Döblin, Tucholsky and Tuwim come with impetus into the cultural life of Germany and Poland and work in the areas of literature, cabaret (satire) as well as journalism. They share sympathy for the political left and fears of the orthodox communism. They are simultaneously advocates and ardent critics of great cities. They pay attention to new phenomena (the popularity of cars, the role of the press, the new morality) and react to them. Their aim is creating a culture which appeals to the masses and educates them in a non-intrusive way. However, the awareness of their own intellectual superiority imposes distance towards lower social groups. The distance stems, firstly, from the universal ambivalence artists feel towards the masses, and secondly, from the ideological moderation characteristic of petit bourgoisie and of the political centre. In general, Döblin, Tucholsky and Tuwim are idealists who hope for a humanitarian world which is impossible in the era of extrem political violence leading to the Holocaust.

Opis:
The springboard for this article is the resolution adopted by the lower house of the Polish parliament (Sejm) that established the year 2020 as Leopold Tyrmand’s anniversary year which is a crucial time landmark in his posthumous legacy. Based on four biographical texts on Tyrmand’s life, which are the subject matter of this article, one can easily notice Tyrmand’s duality that manifests through his legend in the period of PRL (Polish People’s Republic) and his American experience that confirmed his consistency in anticommunist attitude. In all four cases the key issue is the biographical time mark that sets apart the years spent in Poland and the period of Tyrmand’s emigration. Wojciech Skalmowski draws attention to the fact that the author of Zły [The Evil One] had to start his new life over and over again. According to Mariusz Urbanek (Zły Tyrmand) [The Evil Tyrmand], leaving Poland breaks Tyrmand’s biography into two separate stages and the authors of the book Amerykański brzeg Leopolda Tyrmanda [The American Shore of Leopold Tyrmand] claim that it was the emigration that clearly disclosed Tyrmand’s dominant worldview incorporated in his literary works. On the other hand, Marcel Woźniak shifts the focus to identity matters which originated from the novelist’s Jewish background. From this perspective Tyrmand’s biography proves to be one of many examples of migration biographies coming into being between the old and the new world.

Opis:
In my paper I tackle the issue of the cultural self-image of the East European Jew. I provide a critical analysis of a number of texts, of different kinds and bents – confessional, literary, historical, political – to demonstrate the paradoxes and contradictions of Jewish identity. Noticing the bi-polar paths of Jewish self-interpretation (as exemplified, for instance, by Heschel and Szahak), neither free from the subjective and emotional trends, I argue for the truth closer to those views which acknowledge the religious specificity of the Jewish nation as the chosen people. Regardless of multiple contexts worth considering and at work, the essence of Jewishness dwells in the religious feeling.
