The author analyses Andrzej Dobrowolski’s exquisite edition of letters of the editor of Kultura Jerzy Giedroyc and Teodor Parnicki written between 1946 and 1968. This volume of their prolific correspondence reveals a lot of previously unknown facts from the biography of the author of Słowo i ciało and the life of immigrants at the time of the Polish People’s Republic, and shows problems Parnicki had publishing his novels in the Instytut Wydawniczy PAX.
L’auteur analyse l’édition des lettres de Jerzy Giedroyc, rédacteur de « Kultura », et de Teodor Parnicki parfaitement élaborée par Andrzej Dobrowolski. Il s’agit des lettres qui ont été écrites dans les années 1946–1968. Ce riche recueil de correspondances apporte beaucoup d’informations qui n’étaient pas connues auparavant et qui concernent la biographie de l’auteur de Słowo i ciało, l’émigration à l’époque de la République populaire de Pologne, ainsi que les problèmes de Parnicki liés à la publication de ses romans chez Instytut Wydawniczy PAX.

Opis:
Russian intervention in Donbas and annexation of Crimea have triggered a fundamental revision of the EU policy towards Easter neighbourhood and Russia. The main goal of this paper is to develop discussion about the EU strategy towards Russia by presenting political concept named “The Giedroyc doctrine”, created by Polish intellectuals on exile, when Poland was under Soviet domination. Although created a few decades ago, some elements of this doctrine are still surprisingly relevant today and may contribute to contemporary European debate. In particular, we argue that strengthening the prosperity, stability and security in Eastern Europe is possible only when Russia transforms itself into a prosperous and democratic state. Autocratic and neo-imperial Russia undermines any major pro-Western political changes in the region. Therefore, successful transformation of Russia into stable, prosperous and democratic state should be included into the long-term vision of European politicians who intend to keep Europe secure. All political activities in the Eastern neighbourhood should be subordinated to this. It means that economic support for Ukraine and strengthening cooperation with this country should not be a goal itself. Westernization of Ukraine ought to be perceived only as a beginning of political transformation of the whole region.

Jej efekt stanowią liczne publikacje A.M. Cienciały na łamach wydawnictw Instytutu Literackiego, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem książki Polska polityka zagraniczna w latach 1926–1939. Na podstawie tekstów ministra Józefa Becka (1990). Podstawą źródłową są zbiory Archiwum Instytutu Literackiego (korespondencja między obiema postaciami). The purpose of the article is to present and analyse many years of cooperation Anna M. Cienciała, one of the leading Polish historians in exile after 1945, with Jerzy Giedroyc. It resulted in A.M. Cienciała’s numerous publications by the publisher of the Literary Institute, with special attention paid to a book Polska polityka zagraniczna w latach 1926–1939. Na podstawie tekstów ministra Józefa Becka (Polish Foreign Policy in 1926–1939, edited by Anna M. Cienciała on the Basis of Minister Józef Beck’s Texts, 1990). The study was written based on materials from the Archives of Literary Institute, where letters exchanged between Cienciała and Giedroyc are kept.

The purpose of the article is to describe the model and method of management of the Literary Institute and “Kultura” by Jerzy Giedroyc using the categories of circles, networks, and relations, verifying in this way the editor’s legend. The analysis covered the entire period of the Institute’s operation (1946-2000), comparing the internal periodization of the activity with the changes of the authors in the “Kultura” circle, which made it possible to distinguish between the friendly and home circle and three authors’ circles. The diaries, biographies, and letters provided the grounds to emphasize the significance of the network for building the position of “Kultura” as an opinion-forming magazine and a place of help for emigrant writers. Managing “Kultura” is presented, which is focused on creating relations and being objective. Synthesis, content analysis, and comparative methods have been used. This problem has not been discussed so far in the extensive literature on the subject.

From the beginning of the 1830s, mass emigration from Poland, not occurring on such a scale before, was noted, mainly for political reasons (especially after the defeats of the November and January uprisings). The emigration trend continued throughout practically the entire 20th century. It entered the history of Poles, especially the war and post-war period. The coming to power of the communists generated many problems. For political reasons, many dissidents sought freedom outside enslaved Poland. Many of them voluntarily and also under the compulsion of the then “people’s” government. There were two main centers of the political and cultural life of the Polish diaspora – in London and Paris. The Literary Institute, with its founder Jerzy Giedroyc and collaborator Gustaw Herling-Grudziński, played a significant role in the post-war period. Both, despite having different experiences and visions of a free and independent Poland, unanimously saw emigration as a specific form of struggle against the communist regime in Poland. They saw help and weapons in this struggle in the spoken and written word, through which they influenced both the Polish diaspora in many countries and their compatriots in Poland, which was subjugated by communists. They noticed the entire complexity of the problems faced by Polish emigrants, especially those arriving abroad at the beginning of the 1980s. Their accurate diagnoses and advice were not always accepted by the Polish diaspora. The interviews with them in a retrospective form reflect the atmosphere and spirit of the difficult and complex reality of that time.

A significant aspect of the study of political thought is the recognition of its creativity, expressed in the ability to evaluate the past critically and to formulate groundbreaking ideas at moments of radical social and political changes. Undoubtedly, Adolf Bocheński’s political thought in the texts published during World War II had this attribute. The ideas that Bocheński produced were a vital source of inspiration for the program of the magazine called Parisian “Kultura”, which was the most influential center of Polish political emigration after 1945. The forerunning political thought of Bocheński inspired the critical approach of Jerzy Giedroyc’s magazine to the social system of the Second Republic and a willingness to support transformations aimed at making social groups hitherto excluded from active participation in the life of the national community more aware of their rights as citizens. Bocheński’s neo-federalist concepts were even more inspiring. He was undoubtedly a precursor of the concepts of eastern policy of Parisian “Kultura”. When designing the post-war policy of Polish emigration, he postulated linking the Polish cause with the fight for national independence of nations subjugated by the Soviet Union, in particular with the idea of Ukraine’s independence.
Ważnym aspektem badania myśli politycznej jest rozpoznawanie jej kreatywności, wyrażającej się w zdolności do krytycznej oceny przeszłości oraz formułowania prekursorskich idei w momentach radykalnych zmian społecznych i politycznych. Niewątpliwie ten przymiot miała myśl polityczna Adolfa Bocheńskiego obecna w tekstach opublikowanych w czasie II wojny światowej. Idee sformułowane przez Bocheńskiego stanowiły ważne źródło inspiracji dla programu paryskiej „Kultury”, będącej najbardziej wpływowym ośrodkiem polskiej emigracji politycznej po 1945 r. Prekursorska myśl polityczna Bocheńskiego inspirowała krytyczne podejście pisma Jerzego Giedroycia do układu społecznego Drugiej Rzeczypospolitej i wolę wsparcia przemian na rzecz uobywatelnienia grup społecznych wykluczonych dotąd z aktywnego udziału w życiu wspólnoty narodowej. Jeszcze większe znaczenie inspirujące miały koncepcje neofederalistyczne Bocheńskiego. Był on bez wątpienia prekursorem koncepcji polityki wschodniej paryskiej „Kultury”. Projektując powojenną politykę polskiej emigracji, postulował związanie sprawy polskiej z walką o niepodległość państwową narodów ujarzmionych przez Związek Radziecki, w sposób szczególny zaś z ideą niepodległości Ukrainy.
